The Living Force
Rise said:There are quite a few techies when reading through this thread so I'll throw my work into the fray. I'm a programmer/have a computer science degree. I recently graduated so I'm still pretty green but my company decided to give me a 'promotion'. By promotion I mean I do more work and get paid the same. I now lead an out sourced team so I'm balancing politics with management while always being available for questions from team members. I enjoy programming but all I seem to do now is read and write documentation. I'd like to think it is a great opportunity but I get the feeling I'm being used. Why pay someone who has been in the field for 5-10+ years when you could pay a college grad a lot less? Or maybe I should realize that 20%+ of this country is out of work and just be thankful I have a well paying job. Hmmm. :/
That's a really good redefinition of the word 'promotion', I bet it happens a lot more often than real promotions, especially in the current climate.
I'm a postgraduate student, electrical engineering. Decided to do it right after getting my bachelor's degree because I got slightly frustrated hunting for a job, and I wasn't very keen or courageous enough (or you could just say lazy) to start working. The interest is barely there, I'd rather be reading esoterica than doing my assignments, much procrastination issues. But I guess it's good to make "disinterested efforts" if my understanding of The Work is correct :).
