There are quite a few techies when reading through this thread so I'll throw my work into the fray. I'm a programmer/have a computer science degree. I recently graduated so I'm still pretty green but my company decided to give me a 'promotion'. By promotion I mean I do more work and get paid the same. I now lead an out sourced team so I'm balancing politics with management while always being available for questions from team members. I enjoy programming but all I seem to do now is read and write documentation. I'd like to think it is a great opportunity but I get the feeling I'm being used. Why pay someone who has been in the field for 5-10+ years when you could pay a college grad a lot less? Or maybe I should realize that 20%+ of this country is out of work and just be thankful I have a well paying job. Hmmm. :/

That's a really good redefinition of the word 'promotion', I bet it happens a lot more often than real promotions, especially in the current climate.

I'm a postgraduate student, electrical engineering. Decided to do it right after getting my bachelor's degree because I got slightly frustrated hunting for a job, and I wasn't very keen or courageous enough (or you could just say lazy) to start working. The interest is barely there, I'd rather be reading esoterica than doing my assignments, much procrastination issues. But I guess it's good to make "disinterested efforts" if my understanding of The Work is correct :).

I'm a professional illustrator. Anyone who might be curious check it out at [link removed by request] I'm NOT promoting for any work here, but for an artist it's definitely a look/see thing.

I work in the entertainment "industry"- sheesh what a word- playing music for an audience or in studio, My favorite time "at work" is when we find ourselves in a good ol' little tavern somewhere on the outskirts of sometown and allow the true jam session to comeout and the few who happened to listen, simply get up and dance, without reservations or care how they appear.

Someone please be so kind as to tell me if it is a mistake to post a URL link as I have done above. I feel somewhat awkward having done that without considering. If it is wrong, would it be possible to delete it? Sorry, I may be a newbie here, but I've been on forums before, but I seem to be stepping on my own tongue. LOL

No, it's not a problem. We disable active links to known disinformation sites, or even sites that are suspect - just to minimize google traffic to sources of information that should have their traffic limited! Your site isn't an issue. Thanks for asking, though.

Thank you for the response Anart. The link is merely a design site - behance.net - but I made the mistake of giving too much information and I'm requesting that a Moderator remove it for me since I'm unable to.Thanks again.

Done.

I work/manage at our family restaurant and during the summers run a scooter rental-sales shop that a couple friends and I started.

At the restaurant (southwestern food) I run the bar and manage the 'front of the house', making sure the servers have what they need for a night to go smooth, and deal with any problems that may arise. I oversee the kitchen manager, yet stay out unless I'm needed. I also play the music, which can really help with folks' moods. To translate into Star Trek speak, I work the bridge, assist the crew, and keep in touch with engineering.

For the scooter shop, it's a seasonal thing that those of us involved in take turns operating. This year we are expanding to include some rocks and crystals, hand-made jewelry/wraps from myself and a few friends, and maybe some books.
Meeting folks and going for rides is always fun, one never knows what is to be seen :scooter:

Hmmmn, at present I am an artist of functional art. Make decorative glasses, shell bowls and more. In the past I have done many types of jobs. From sales to cleaning bathrooms. Was an environmental interpreter (park ranger), worked in recording studios, waited tables and bartended, basic office jobs, cashier, walked around delivering fliers and probably more I can not recall now. I would say that my career is an artist for that is where my heart is.

Hi all, I am a Pilates practitioner. I love to share my evolving knowledge of this work. Every session and every client is a lesson learned. So many people are in pain and discomfort, and that becomes their reality, their norm. And many people are disconnected to their own bodies and have to relearn movement, become more aware of themselves in space. I love love love my job and look forward to going to work every day. blah blah blah.. did I mention I teach Pilates ;D

Good for you and your students! I personally think pilates is one of the most effective workouts out there, combined with swimming, you can get a rocking body in no time.
