What's your work...

formerly a nurse (that was my soul crusher), a mom, and currently working on my artistic side as a portrait artist.

Tried to make a living from music and having all kinds of jobs in the meantime until my mid twenties. Gave up on the music and went to med school, and am now a g.p. I still play in bands and make music but am happy with my day job.

I am a database and business intelligence developer (MS SQL Server-based). I left the corporate world several years ago and I now work for a non-profit healthcare association (CPCA--cpca.org).

Fun to read through the posts, that first lawyer post had me laughing. I accepted a position as a computer programmer about 30 years ago. I've been with a half dozen different companies in that time and as a job it's been good for paying the bills. Now, with the bulk of family responsibility behind me, it might be a good time to decide on a career.

I am an irrigator at a golf course in the desert, currently. I dig ditches, fix pipes, water grass, etc. I was promoted to this position a year ago. I enjoy doing work activities that would normally cause me to feel insecure or uncomfortable because of lack of experience or self confidence. Gurdjieff says we should like what the machine doesnt like, so I play to my weaknesses whenever I can. Thats how weaknesses become strengths, no?

Unfortunately I know all too well about retail sales in the beauty industry Mabar. About 9 years ago I worked for one of the worlds largest cosmetic companies. It took a old lady giving me her bus money for a jar of face cream to get me to realise that sales was not for me.

I now run my own mobile business specialising in wedding hair and makeup. I also work two days a week in admin and accounts at a local bowling club (lawn bowls not ten pin). It helps pay the rent and keeps the other side of the brain working.

My most important (and demanding) job of all is raising my two children ages six and seven. No Bridezilla could ever compete with the demands and tantrums of my two......but I love them dearly.

Fortunately I don't have kids!!... I think worker mothers should be payed tripled at home and at work... I am in this work because I decided that way, I choose to be here, ...now I think that it is more a commitment, if I am able to changes things for the better of the employees, and I am doing it or trying, I think it is the right place, It is not for the money either, even when it is a family business, of curse there are some times that I get frustrated inside the job and outside, November and this December I need to not wear out myself in non value issues?? ... it is quite chaotic this months, working at down town center of Mexico city is understandable. That is why it is called Down Town Histeric Center of Mexico City :D

PS added this PS: about the money, just to clarify, it is not that I have money to burn, on the contrary its been quite difficult addapting mysef to precarious budget?... due to other circumnstances I cannot gain much.

Hello I am from Mexico too.
What I am doing is writing stories base in some inspiration, and based from the cassiopaean Material, and about some experiences and well everything that inspires me. That is for me my work, because I write my thoughts and feelings and I like to write more that going to school, I don't take the school so seriously, I just go because you don't know where or when you are going to learn something lol.

I will like to study something about writing but maybe I don't need it, just practice.

I think it would be a great idea to study creative writing, if that's where your passions lay.

Practice without knowledge only affects what you already have. Surely there are skills to the craft that you have not yet learned.

I was a journalist before I went to journalism school. Although I felt proud of my writing before college, I can now look back and see so many ways that it was immature and unskilled.

Writing is a craft and should, in my opinion, be approached like a craft. One doesn't just decide to be a master painter, musician, sculptor, etc., one studies the art and learns technique. Although some masters were self taught, they represent the minority. Most masters studied long and hard and practiced everything they learned.

There's a big difference between writing well and making words sing. Like many old people would say to me growing up, anything worth doing is worth doing well. To do your best requires going beyond your abilities, which is quite difficult without a mentor or trainer.

You might be able to find what we in Canada call writing circles. These are groups of people who want to improve their craft and have a wide array of skill level and experience. They often meet regularly in cafes or bars and show their work to each other for critique. This might be a good way to find out how your current skill measures up, learning more about your strengths and weaknesses before choosing an academic path.

I wish you all the best in your writing.

Very good advice Gonzo :) :) :)

Cubbex, I would also suggest you to study, specially if you live in Mexico, Universities there are really good on letter fields! I had in school a teacher that studied Language in Mexico City and she was by far one of the most intelligent and sensitive teachers I have ever had, and she always talk wonderfully about her experience in Mexico and how her mind and writing skills developed and improved in school. Good luck!!!

Ok thanks to the comments, I thought it was kind of simple. But it is true, it's not the same make the word sing and be a good writer.
And I know what do you mean Gonzo, I see that the way I write before when I was 14 or 15 is so different than now.

I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
In other words,I perform laboratory tests at the hospital where I work.

There are quite a few techies when reading through this thread so I'll throw my work into the fray. I'm a programmer/have a computer science degree. I recently graduated so I'm still pretty green but my company decided to give me a 'promotion'. By promotion I mean I do more work and get paid the same. I now lead an out sourced team so I'm balancing politics with management while always being available for questions from team members. I enjoy programming but all I seem to do now is read and write documentation. I'd like to think it is a great opportunity but I get the feeling I'm being used. Why pay someone who has been in the field for 5-10+ years when you could pay a college grad a lot less? Or maybe I should realize that 20%+ of this country is out of work and just be thankful I have a well paying job. Hmmm. :/
