What are you listening to?

I love the Putumayo series of records.

Just discovered this one. Very nice to listen to when eating a meal, entertaining...

... lovely, romantic, soothing... timeless...

Happy holiday weekend, those of you in the states...

I've been reading a book by T. C. Lethbridge on the ESP - all tied together within the subject of phenomenon. What does this have to do with this thread, in one part he is discussing sound, and how certain sounds seem to enter the subconscious mind and evoke feelings that have no relationship to time and space.

Quickly, an example would be (for some) the sound of the war-pipes, and from the first note there is a lump that hits your throat - it stops you, seemingly transcending time to feelings of some type of collective memory that is not of the brain, but of the mind. Certain voices, notes and other natural sounds do the same thing; different for each, and yet there is some commonalities between people. Some sounds do nothing for the individual, and some can bring many to tears.

Will try and make a point of posting about this elsewhere, as Lethbridge had much to say on the subject of phenomenon, that had more insight than I had read before from him, even correcting some of his earlier thoughts.

Anyway, take what the C's said of the group Pink Floyd:

July 18, 1998
Q: (L) Now, frivolous question number one: Do you guys like Pink Floyd?
A: "Like" is a bit off base.
Q: (L) What would be more 'on base?'
A: Absorb.
Q: (L) Do you absorb Pink Floyd?
A: We are Pink Floyd, and all other facets of your higher consciousness.

In the song THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY, the female vocalist had been Clare Torry, and remember feeling that lump when listening to her sing, and there have been many others in time singing other songs (many in this thread) that either would or wouldn't create the same feelings. So, Lethbridge made me think about this, and I don't know why, other than like the Scottish pipes, some things produce feelings that are not day to day experiences. They hit you almost instantaneously (not unlike (for me) an amazing violin, a concerto by the masters or singing by monks) and evoke some type of memory of something beyond oneself. Lethbridge reminds that this is the same with natural sounds (variable to the person), such as a roaring sea, or as he adds, the solemnness of the Spotted Woodpecker tapping - you stop and listen or behold. Many examples.

For the purposes of Pink Floyd, here is Clair Torry's version:

More recently, the same song brought a new singer in. The singer is from Montreal, Eva Avila, and her background can be read here. I think she does a good job singing he same song:

Lastly, here is an example of a violin that is pretty outstanding:

Talking Heads - Road to Nowhere

Lyrics -

Well, we know where we're goin'
But we don't know where we've been
And we know what we're knowin'
But we can't say what we've seen
And we're not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out
We're on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride
I'm feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know
We're on a road to paradise
Here we go, here we go
We're on a ride to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride
Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there, take you there
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it's all right, baby it's all right
And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby it's all right
Would you like to come along?
And you could help me sing this song
And it's all right, baby it's all right
They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby it's all right
There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And it's all right, baby it's all right
And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby it's all right
Would you like to come along?
You could help me sing this song
And it's all right, baby it's all right
They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby it's all right
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere

Moana & The Tribe (featuring Megan Henderson) - "Maiea"

Megan Henderson of Breabach joins forces with Moana and the Tribe for their latest single ‘Maiea’, which features lyrics in both Māori and Scottish Gaelic. The beautiful accompanying video, which features Moana’s daughter, was filmed in New Zealand and Scotland.

"Maiea" (pronounced My-ear-ah) is a call for peace; an incantation in archaic Māori language to ancient deities and gods to soothe and calm a troubled mind. Megan Henderson’s voice is a scene-stealer. Her hauntingly beautiful lyrics complement the incantation delivered by Scotty Morrison as they both draw on the ancestors to placate and calm.
