WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 06_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. An M5.6 earthquake occurred at Carlsberg Ridge in southern India. It is possible that this earthquake occurred in response to the M7.5 earthquake in Noto, Japan, although it was expected to occur inland and in the Hindu Kush region.
The energy of the M7.5 earthquake may move towards the region of China and the Hindu Kush (Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran) and provoke an M5+ and even a low M6 earthquake, being M6.5 the worst scenario in the next seven days. It should be recalled that an earthquake of this magnitude would be devastating for the region.
chrome_screenshot_1 ene. 2024 18_40_53 GMT-06_00.png
Energy from the Noto earthquake is also spreading towards South America and the East Pacific ridge off the coast of Peru recorded an M5.1 earthquake.

At this time we are still waiting for a significant M6+ event in the Americas or Centrall/East Asia.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 868 which is within the normal range of activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with shallow (less than 50 km) earthquakes (>10 eq) within 20 km radius during the past 24 hours were:
Clear Lake (19 quakes between mag 0.2-1.5),
Fagradalsfjall (21 quakes between mag 0.3-1.1), Krísuvík (11 quakes between mag 0.1-1.4), Reykjanes (14 quakes between mag 0.1-2.4)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 07_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Most of the moderate to strong seismic activity was concentrated in the western Pacific Ocean with two M5.5 and M5.7 earthquakes being the strongest and occurred south of Australia in the Balleny Islands.

In the Americas, Panama, Brazil and Bolivia were shaken by light to moderate earthquakes. Bolivia was hit by an M5.2 earthquake at an intermediate depth of 140 km. On the other hand, the area located between Guyana and Venezuela, in Pacaraima region of Brazil, recorded an atypical M4.7 earthquake.

Earthquake of magnitude 4.7 felt by residents of Pacaraima

Residents of Pacaraima reported an earthquake on Saturday night (jan 06). According to them, the seismic tremor was felt at around 8:50 p.m. local time (00:45 UTC Jan 07 according to Volcanodiscovery) and lasted for one minute. (Wow! )

According to the videos, the tremor happened before a general power failure in the municipality. The situation would have caused panic since the tremor was considered by residents to be strong.

Other reports also indicate that the tremor was felt in the municipality of Normandia. In addition, cracks appeared in homes.

According to the Venezuelan Seismological Research Foundation (Funvisis), the 4.7 magnitude earthquake had its epicenter in Surumu Village at around 8:45pm. The quake was 15 km deep and reached a radius of 100 km.

The risk of Brazil suffering large-scale earthquakes is very low. Tremors on Brazilian territory occur mainly in the Northeast and have never caused major damage, just shaking furniture, knocking over small objects and causing a feeling of imbalance for a few seconds.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 843 which is within the normal range of activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with shallow (less than 50 km) earthquakes (>10 eq) within 20 km radius during the past 24 hours were:
Clear Lake (20 quakes between mag 0.2-1.9), Fagradalsfjall (20 quakes between mag 0.1-1.5) Reykjanes (20 quakes between mag 0.2-1.3)
quakes-at-volcanoes-07012024.jpg

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. In the Americas we see the three earthquakes that occurred in Panama (offshore) Bolivia and Brazil. It is possible that the energy is concentrating here because of the lack of response to the M7.5 earthquake in the Noto Peninsula Japan. Ecuador or Peru could register a significant earthquake in the next few days. Let's wait and see

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 09_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A M5.9 hit northeast of the Noto peninsula in Japan. This quake was likely an aftershock of the 7.5 earthquake on January 1st.
chrome_screenshot_9 ene. 2024 17_18_58 GMT-06_00.png
Since then, 1,219 aftershocks have followed the main shock. National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience of Japan issue a preliminary magnitude 6.2

The energy of this M7.5 earthquake is beginning to manifest in the Americas. Chile (M5.4) Peru (M4.9) Argentina (M4.9) and several M4+ in southeastern Mexico have occurred in the past 24 hours.

Taking into consideration the M6.7 earthquake in the Philippines, according to
Jesus Ramos analysis, another M6+ and in the worst case M8+ impact could be expected in the central or southern regions of Japan, Sumatra, Indonesia, Tonga, Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu. In fact, these last regions have recorded M5+ earthquakes.

Jesus Ramos believes that there was a link between the millions of fish that washed up on the beach of Tinoto,Mindanao Philippines, on the morning of January 7 and the M6.7 earthquake southeast of the event.
The majority of reports came from Davao a city of 1.2 million people in 254 km (158 mi) distance north of the epicenter. This region was shaken by an M7.6 earthquake on December 2nd.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has increased to 987 which is above the normal range of activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with shallow (less than 50 km) earthquakes (>10 eq) within 20 km radius during the past 24 hours were:

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 10_2024

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. Almost 24 hours passed without an M5+ earthquake and the first one occurred in the Mariana Islands region at 22:44 UTC with a magnitude 5.0 and a second earthquake in central Peru at 23:54 UTC also with a magnitude 5.0. Two regions in which a significant event is expected to occur
chrome_screenshot_1 ene. 2024 18_54_44 GMT-06_00.png

A first sign that energy is moving toward the Cocos Plate and the Nazca Plate would be the increased volcanic activity in Hawaii. In such a case for southeastern Mexico and Central America a M5+ and in the worst case M6+ low earthquake could be expected in the next ten days. While for the regions of Peru and Ecuador a low M6 and in the worst case scenario M7.2 earthquake could be expected.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has increased to 894 which is slightly within the normal range of activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with shallow (less than 50 km) earthquakes (>10 eq) within 20 km radius during the past 24 hours were:
Clear Lake (18 quakes between mag 0.2-1.7), Fagradalsfjall (10 quakes between mag 0.2-1.3)

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. Seismic activity scattered around the world with the exception of the two M5+ earthquakes, the remaining 18 earthquakes were low M4+.

Signs that something strong was coming were given with the seismic silence of almost 24 hours without an M5+ earthquake on January 10th coupled with the movement of energy from the powerful M7 5 earthquake off the Noto Peninsula in Japan.
We have almost 18 hours of seismic silence for M5+ earthquakes.

Almost 24 hours passed without an M5+ earthquake and the first one occurred in the Mariana Islands region at 22:44

According to Volcanodiscovery data the estimated energy release was equivalent to 60036 tons of TNT or 3.8 atomic bombs.

Fortunately the closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Taloqan, a town with 64,300 inhabitants in Takhar, Afghanistan , in 98 km (61 mi) distance west of the epicenter. People likely experienced light shaking shaking there.

The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

From October 07 to 15, 2023, four M6.3 earthquakes struck western Afghanistan, killing an estimated 1,500 people.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 11_2023

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24h. A magnitude 6.4 hit Afghanistan this morning (see previous post) So far, one aftershock M4.1 has been recorded. It hit 12 hours after the mainshock in 3.8 km (2.4 mi) distance. The scarcity of aftershocks indicates that an M5+ event is about to occur in the next few hours or in the worst case another M6+ earthquake.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has increased to 927 which is above the normal range of activity. This was mainly due to increased seismic activity in volcanoes, especially in Iceland.

A strong magnitude 4.5 earthquake hit 142 km (88 mi) away from Akureyri, Northeast, Iceland, in the early morning of Thursday, Jan11, 2024 at 6.53 am local time. The nearest volcano is Grímsvötn located at 4km from epicenter.

According to Volcano earthquake report the volcanoes with shallow (less than 50 km) earthquakes (>10 eq) within 20 km radius during the past 24 hours were:
Clear Lake (30 quakes between mag 0.2-2.0), Fagradalsfjall (11 quakes between mag 0.1-1.4), Grímsvötn (9 quakes between mag 0.7-4.5) Reykjanes (17 quakes between mag 0.3-1.2)

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We see that the west coast of South America is currently registering light seismic activity with M4+ earthquakes and 1 M5.0 in Peru yesterday. The same situation occurs in the west of the Pacific Ocean. If it were not for the M6.4 earthquake in Afghanistan, another day of low activity would be recorded.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 12_2023

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A strong M5.9 earthquake North Pacific Ocean, 80 km south of Sitka and 73 km W of Port Alexander, Alaska, USA. According to USGS, the quake might have been felt by over 21,200 people in a light way. The risk of fatalities from this quake is considered low and classified as green level. INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) recorded the earthquake as M6.0. This earthquake was expected to occur due to the movement of energy from M7.5 earthquake in Noto Japan.
Likewise, the energy could move towards the Kamchatka region and Alaska and produce an M6+ earthquake and in the worst case scenario an M7+.

4.2 quake Oklahoma City Area, Oklahoma, Jan 12, 2024 09:46 pm (GMT -6)

A very shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the evening near Edmond, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, USA.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday, January 12th, 2024, at 9:46 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.

In Arcadia (pop. 260) located 4 miles from the epicenter, and Edmond (pop. 90,100) 5 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Midwest City (pop. 57,200) located 15 miles from the epicenter, Oklahoma City (pop. 631,300) 15 miles away, Del City (pop. 22,000) 16 miles away, Bethany (pop. 19,600) 17 miles away, Moore (pop. 60,500) 23 miles away, Yukon (pop. 25,900) 23 miles away, and Mustang (pop. 20,200) 27 miles away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Norman (pop. 120,300) located 31 miles from the epicenter.

In America, two light earthquakes M4.1 and M4.3 shook Oklahoma

Multiple earthquakes hit Oklahoma City metro area, including 2 of 4.4 magnitude

A series of earthquakes struck Oklahoma Friday evening into Saturday morning, including at least two of 4.4 magnitude.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS) released a statement Saturday reporting "strong shaking in the immediate area and across Oklahoma City" as a result of the earthquakes.

"Whereas most aftershocks are smaller than the mainshock, a very small fraction of aftershocks result in a larger earthquake than the main event," the OGS said in its statement. "The seismic hazard remains high in the area. Citizens should secure valuables that might shake during possible strong aftershocks and practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On in the event of damaging events."

The earthquakes did not match the most powerful recorded in the state's history, which was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred Sept. 3, 2016, near Pawnee, located in northern Oklahoma.

In March 2017, Pawnee Nation filed a lawsuit suing some Oklahoma oil companies in tribal court, alleging that the companies had injected wastewater underground, which led to the earthquake.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has increased to 800 which is within the normal range of activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report earthquake swarm occurred in
Clear Lake (25 quakes between mag 0.4-1.7)
Fagradalsfjall (38 quakes between mag 0.1-1.0) Krísuvík (10 quakes between mag 0.1-1.9) Reykjanes (34 quakes between mag 0.2-1.7)
The strongest volcano earthquake occurred in Gagak (3 quakes between mag 2.9-3.5), Kabupaten Sukabumi, 30 km SW of Ciampea, West Java, Indonesia with a M3.5
