Iceland volcano - latest: ‘Black day’ for Grindavik as houses torched and farm animals at risk from lava

It has been a “black day” for the town of Grindavik, Iceland’s prime minister has said after lava from a volcanic eruption hit the small fishing town and torched multiple houses.

Katrín Jakobsdóttir called for calm and urged residents to stick together and look out for one another.

She said: “Today is a black day for Grindavík and today is a black day for all of Iceland, but the sun will rise again.

“Together we will deal with this shock and whatever may come. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”

Multiple houses have been set on fire from the lava. Residents have been evacuated and there were reports of injury or death, although some farm animals were not able to be moved.

The strongest volcano earthquake occurred in Akita-Yake-yama located in the Honshu Island, Japan with a magnitude 3.8

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 18_2024

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A M6.4 earthquake shook the Tonga region in the southwest Pacific Ocean. An event of such magnitude was to be expected due to the M5+ seismic clustering that occurred in previous days. There is a relationship between seismic clustering and significant M6+ events.
A seismic cluster of 4 earthquakes M5+ occurred in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, between the islands of Vanuatu and northeastern New Zealand. These earthquakes could be a significant event in the region.
chrome_screenshot_15 ene. 2024 16_40_07 GMT-06_00.png
The epicenter was located about 126 km (78 miles) NW of Fangale’ounga, and 126 km (78 miles) WSW of Neiafu, Tonga. 21 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking. The USGS issued a Green alert (low) for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. The M6.4 earthquake was preceded by an M5.0 and an M5.8 earthquake.

M5.3 and M5.7 earthquakes shook the South Sandwich Islands. This seismic activity takes pressure off Chile, which so far has recorded light M4+ and M5+ activity.

On the morning of January 18, Mexican authorities recorded an M5.0 earthquake with epicenter 21 km southeast of Crucecita, Oaxaca, at 08:40 hours local time. Fortunately, the earthquake did not cause any damage.

An M4.7 earthquake struck at the top of the world. According to information from Volcanodiscovery: "The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of Russia in over 6 years. Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 4.8 earthquake on Tuesday, Jul 17, 2018"

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has decreased to 838 which is within the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:

Campi Flegrei (Phlegrean Fields) (11 quakes between mag 0.1-1.3), Clear Lake (33 quakes between mag 0.2-1.7), Etna (8 quakes between mag 1.1-2.4), Krísuvík (20 quakes between mag 0.1-1.6), Reykjanes (22 quakes between mag 0.1-2.1)

This earthquake was expected because of the energy distribution of the M7.5 earthquake in Noto, Japan earlier this year and the M6.7 earthquake in Sarangani Philippines on January 8. Signs of this appeared with the activity that occurred previously in Panama, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina.
After yesterday's earthquakes in Panama, Bolivia and Brazil, it was the turn of Ecuador and Argentina. According to analyst Jesús Ramos, a M5+ earthquake could be expected in the region of Panama, Colombia, the coasts of Ecuador and northern Peru, and in the worst case, M6 low

Update 20:40
In the evening it trembled again: Magnitude 3.3 registered the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics around 8:30 p.m., thus as strong as the earthquake on Thursday morning. The vibrations were once again felt around the epicentre and also on the German side of the border.

Original message from 6:16 am

An earthquake series is built up in Tyrol. After two stronger earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 and 3.3 as well as several smaller ones in the last days, the next stronger earthquake followed in the night of Friday. According to ZAMG, this was again a little stronger with magnitude 3.4 and once again many people between Kitzbühel and Pillersee might have torn out of sleep. Similar to the earthquake on Thursday, almost exactly 24 hours before, the Schütter area also extended beyond the German border and included in addition to places close to the border such as Reit im Winkl, the southern shore of the Chiemse as well as Ruhpolding and parts of the Inn Valley, but only with very weak vibrations, which were probably only felt by individuals.

At the epicenter, the intensity was significantly higher than in the previous quee. In addition to the small difference in magnitude, the lower depth also contributed to the fact that intensities over IV have now been achieved. Minor damage to plaster (Haarrisse) can no longer be ruled out, since very locally higher intensities are also possible, depending on the exact location. Other earthquakes have to be expected. In addition to the usual aftersettings in the size range up to magnitude 2.5, further stronger earthquakes cannot be ruled out.

In Tyrol and the neighbouring Bavarian Alps there are always slight earthquakes. Due to the continuous growth of the Alps, there are some active disturbances along which shifts within the mountains. Most of these are small earthquakes. In historical times, however, there were also major earthquakes or partly via magnitude 6.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 19_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. South America had moderate to strong seismic activity. An M5.6 earthquake shook Colombia leaving numerous damages while further to the northeast an M5.3 earthquake struck Venezuela and another M5.1 Argentina. So far Peru has registered light activity, the highest magnitude quake reached 4.8

The Vanuatu region was shaken by two earthquakes, one magnitude 5.5 and the other magnitude 5.0 in response to the M6.4 earthquake in Tonga yesterday. This energy will continue to impact South America in the coming days possibly with M5+ or in the worst case M6+ low.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has increased to 840 which is within the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Clear Lake (28 quakes between mag 0.2-2.1) Tjörnes Fracture Zone (9 quakes between mag 1.1-2.4)
The strongest volcano earthquake occurred Escanaba Segment volcano with a Mag. 3.3 Earthquake 265 Km W of Ferndale, California

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 20_2023

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Three powerful earthquakes occurred in the last hours: Brazil (M6.5) Southwest Indian Ridge (M6.3) and Pagan region, northern Mariana Islands (M6.1).

The earthquake in Brazil occurred 134 km from Cruzeiro do Sul in the Brazilian Amazon jungle at a considerable depth of 629 km, which is why the quake was felt only slightly in nearby towns. According to USGS the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter mainly in Tarauaca (pop. 16,500) located 122 km from the epicenter.

chrome_screenshot_20 ene. 2024 17_48_22 GMT-06_00.png

This earthquake in Brazil almost at the border with Peru may mark the end of the sequence that started with the M7.5 earthquake in Noto Japan and continued with the M6.7 in the Philippines, the M6.4 in Tonga region, the M6.1 in the Mariana Islands and the M6.3 in the southwestern Indian Ocean. If this is the case, let's wait for the next significant event. (Although M5+ events in Peru and Chile cannot be ruled out yet) Possibly a report from SSGEOS can give us an idea of when we could expect such an event given the planetary geometries, however so far their page has not been updated.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 has increased to 952 which is above the normal range of activity. According to Volcano earthquake report volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Clear Lake (21 quakes between mag 0.5-1.8), Fagradalsfjall (6 quakes between mag 0.2-1.3) Krísuvík (6 quakes between mag 0.4-1.4), Reykjanes (13 quakes between mag 0.1-1.1)
The strongest volcano earthquake occurred in Tenorio Volcano with Mag. 2.8. at 35 km SE of San José, provincia de Alajuela Costa Rica.

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. There is a light to moderate concentration of energy in the western Pacific Ocean. The Vanuatu-Tonga-Kermadec region is still active and is targeted to be a candidate for a significant M7+ event.
