WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 26_2024
Moderate levels of seismic activity have occurred in the last 24 hours. A strong M6.1 earthquake hit Guatemala at 23:52 local time. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 108 km, so it is estimated that 227,000 people felt moderate shaking and 22,008,000 felt mild shaking.
The USGS issued a Green alert (low) for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage. Guatemala’s emergency services agency CONRED reported that parts of a church’s facade in San Pablo Jocopilas fell, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

According to analyst Jesús Ramos, a similar magnitude response is expected in Mexico (M6+) and up to one and a half magnitudes higher in Colombia, Venezuela and the Caribbean region (M7+).
Another region to watch is Papua New Guinea. In the last 24 hours M5.5 and M5.1 earthquakes have been recorded. Here there is a concentration of energy that may lead to the next seismic sequence in Southeast Asia.
Southwest Turkey was hit by an M5.1 quake and this is another sign of the westward movement of energy from the M7.0 quake in the Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang region which recorded an M5.0 aftershock in the last 24 hours.
The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours has decreased to 872 which is within normal activity. According to
Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Brennisteinsfjöll (30 quakes between mag 0.2-3.)
Clear Lake (53 quakes between mag 0.4-2.2),
Kilauea (18 quakes between mag 1.8-3.0)
Strongest volcanic earthquake occurred at
Merapi Volcano with a magnitude of 4.4 located 32 km southeast of Bukittinggi, Sumatra Barat, Indonesia, on Saturday, Jan 27, 2024, at 11:50 pm local time.
The most intense volcanic explosion of 2024 was recorded by the Mount Merapi Volcano in Central Java, #Indonesia , a few days ago. (January 21, 2024)
Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. A concentration of seismic activity can be observed in the western Pacific Ocean. Of particular interest is the activity being recorded in Papua New Guinea region.
