Earthquakes around the world

Last week saw 3 M6 earthquakes and one M7, a M7.0 in China.
In the usual area, there were 3 out of 126 earthquakes equal to or greater than 4.5 and 1752 out of 2178 quakes of all sizes.
Percentage: 80.9%
Last did not see any earthquakes which reaches M6.0.
In the usual area, there were 3 out of 84 earthquakes equal to or greater than 4.5 and 1623 out of 3212 quakes of all sizes.
Percentage: 50.5%.
This is the lowest percentage by far for the last 4 years and I am not sure if USGS suddenly has started to count a lot of the smaller earthquakes around the world which they otherwise happily ignore. Perhaps they have changed to a different set of filters for which earthquakes to add to their database and which ones not.
What is clear and has been for many years is, that USGS don't by far count all earthquakes.

Yes, the last few days we saw low to moderate levels of seismic activity, only one M5.7 aftershock occurred in the Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang region and the following earthquakes did not exceed M5.5, it was as if the Earth concentrated its energy in the seismic swarm of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The USGS reports were flooded by earthquakes in Hawaii of magnitude between M2 and M3 if I remember correctly the largest earthquake was M3.5 with moderate activity in the rest of the world mainly in the western Pacific Ocean and light to moderate activity in Central and South America.

It appears that once Kilauea released its pressure, M5 earthquakes began to occur again in the Ring of Fire.

Up to this moment Kilauea has registered 52 earthquakes between magnitude 1.7-2.8 when last February 1st it registered 397 earthquakes in 24 hours, including M3.5.

Curious

The USGS reports were flooded by earthquakes in Hawaii of magnitude between M2 and M3
You are right. Out of 3200 about 1300+ came from Hawaii, which would explain the huge jump in the USGS recording. So it isn't likely to be due to different filtering of quakes, just that Hawaii has many and of course the USGS would tally those since it is part of the US.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 04_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has decreased to 929 which is above normal activity. This is mainly due to the decrease in seismic activity at the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. According to USGS
"Earthquake counts continues to decrease from 5–10 events per hour to 1–7 earthquakes; dispersed widely from the summit to the southwest. Depths remain consistent, 1–4 km (less than a mile–2.5 mi) below the surface and magnitudes range a maximum of 3+ to less than 1. In total, less than 150 earthquakes, down from ~300, have been recorded across this region over the past 24 hours, reflecting the continued decrease in seismicity."

According to Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Brennisteinsfjöll (7 quakes between mag 0.3-2.3), Campi Flegrei (6 quakes between mag 0.2-3.0), Clear Lake (23 quakes between mag 0.7-2.2), Eldey (31 quakes between mag 0.1-2.9), Fagradalsfjall (23 quakes between mag 0.1-2.2), Kilauea (45 quakes between mag 1.7-2.8), Krísuvík (10 quakes between mag 0.5-1.1)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 05_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Seismic activity at the Kilauea Hawaii volcano has returned to what can be considered normal levels and now it appears to be the turn (again) for the volcanoes on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Three moderate M5+ seismic events have been recorded so far on the Reykjanes Ridge, with an M5.4 earthquake being the largest.

A light earthquake magnitude 4.0 shook southeastern Romania. The shallow quake was felt mainly in Bucharest 75 km west of the epicenter and with a population of 1,900,000 inhabitants. No damage or injuries were reported.

The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has increased to 1002 which is above normal activity. Seismic activity in Iceland is picking up due to volcanic activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Brennisteinsfjöll (7 quakes between mag 0.1-1.6), Campi Flegrei (17 quakes between mag 0.1-3.0), Clear Lake (10 quakes between mag 0.4-2.4), Eldey (45 quakes between mag 0.1-2.4) Kilauea (28 quakes between mag 1.7-2.5), Krísuvík (13 quakes between mag 0.1-2.0), Reykjanes (41 quakes between mag 0.1-1.9)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 06_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. An earthquake shook El Salvador this morning, with a magnitude of 5.7 according to data from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) which was later adjusted to M5.5 and a depth of 55 km. The location of the epicenter was off the coast of El Salvador and was caused by the dynamics of the subduction process of the Cocos Plate under the Caribbean Plate.
CocosPlate.png
There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. According to USGS the quake might have been felt by over 16.5 million people across 4 countries: Guatemala (8.8 million), El Salvador (6.3 million), Honduras (1.5 million), and Nicaragua (9,780). Weak shaking might have been felt in La Libertad (pop. 16,900) located 55 km from the epicenter. No aftershocks have been recorded so far.

A seismic swarm has been recorded in the Gulf of California with M4+ earthquakes with a 4.8 being the highest magnitude. It is possible that this is related to the recent earthquakes in Central America.
20240206_173420.png

The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has decreased to 910 which is above normal activity. However, seismic activity in Iceland's volcanoes, mainly, has returned to normal levels.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 08_2024

No M5+ earthquakes have occurred in the west of the Ring of Fire, which is significant. We should keep an eye on what happens in the next few hours. There has also been no significant earthquake in South America after the two deep M6+ earthquakes in the Brazilian Amazon, however, we have seen M5+ & M6+ earthquakes in Central America (El Salvador and Guatemala) and in the last 24 hours an M5.1 earthquake in the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Light M4+ earthquakes continue in the Gulf of California, in the past 24 hours three M4+ earthquakes have occurred, 4.7 being the largest magnitude.

The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has increased to 1161 which is above normal activity. This was mainly due to seismic activity produced by volcanoes in Iceland. Fagradalsfjall is the volcano with the highest seismic activity with 183 events between 0.1-3.1.

According to Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Clear Lake (22 quakes between mag 0.3-1.7), Edgecumbe (11 quakes between mag 0.1-1.1), Fagradalsfjall (183 quakes between mag 0.1-3.1), Hrómundartindur (8 quakes between mag 0.1-2.4), Kilauea (6 quakes between mag 1.7-2.6), Krísuvík (11 quakes between mag 0.1-1.4), Reykjanes (33 quakes between mag 0.1-2.1)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 09_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Seismic silence for M5+ earthquakes in the western Ring of Fire was broken at 09:18 UTC by an M5.3 earthquake northeast of Levuka, Fiji, then at 10:57 UTC a strong M6.1 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands northeast of Auckland Island, New Zealand. No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued. No aftershocks have been recorded so far.

The seismic swarm in the Gulf of California continues with M4+ earthquakes, 4.7 being the highest magnitude recorded. At 20:41 UTC an M5.1 earthquake was recorded in Puerto Vallarta on the west coast of Mexico (southeast of Gulf of California seismic swarm). This earthquake could be related to the seismic swarm in Hawaii which recorded today an M5.7 earthquake at 20:06 UTC and it can be expected that more energy will move towards Mexico in such case there could be a M6+ event in the worst case.

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake, followed by a series of small aftershocks, all epicentered near Malibu, rattled Southern California. After the 4.6 magnitude quake hit at 1:47 p.m local time, there were nine aftershocks recorded by 2:05 p.m. The largest was 3.0 and the smallest 1.6, according to the Southern California Seismic Network. Today marks the 52nd anniversary of the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake, a 6.6 magnitude tremor that killed 64 people and caused extensive damage throughout the city of Los Angeles.

The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has decreased to 1094 which is above normal activity. This was mainly due to seismic activity produced by volcanoes in Iceland. Fagradalsfjall continues to be the volcano with the highest seismic activity with 44 events between 0.1-1.0

According to Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Brennisteinsfjöll (17 quakes between mag 0.1-1.0), Clear Lake (27 quakes between mag 0.2-1.8), Fagradalsfjall (44 quakes between mag 0.1-1.0),, Kilauea (10 quakes between mag 1.2-2.3)

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 10_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. An M5.8 earthquake and an M5.4 aftershock shook the Philippines, 7 aftershocks of minor magnitude have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 2.7 quake. The M5.8 earthquake occurred 10 weeks after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake had hit on Saturday, Dec 2, 2023,
chrome_screenshot_3 dic. 2023 14_11_13 GMT-06_00.png
This M5.8 was also the strongest quake in this area in at least 10 years. The strongest-ever recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 8.0. It had occurred 51 years ago earlier, on Saturday, Dec 2, 1972.

The seismic swarm in Loreto Baja California Sur Mexico continues and today 14 more M4+ earthquakes were recorded with a 4.5 being the highest magnitude. This energy is moving towards Southern California, USA, which has registered a M4.6 earthquake so far. According to Analyst Jesús Ramos, the energy from the M5.7 earthquake in Hawaii will move towards the west coast of Mexico and Southern California.
chrome_screenshot_10 feb. 2024 18_47_45 GMT-06_00.png
The M5.7 earthquake in Hawaii occurred on the Pacific Plate, which in turn impacts the Cocos Plate and the North American Plate. It is possible that in the region of Jalisco Mexico an M5.5 earthquake and in the worst case a M6.5 earthquake could occur in the next 5 days while for the central zone of Mexico (Michoacan and Oaxaca) an M5+ earthquake could be expected and in the worst case M6.0 which would have repercussions for Mexico City.

For Southern California an M5.0 and worst case M5.8 earthquake could be expected while for the Texas and New Mexico area an M4+ earthquake with a worst case scenario of M5.0 could be expected. In fact, today an M4.1 earthquake was recorded northeast of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico.

The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has decreased to 949 which is above normal activity. Clear lake volcano not only registered the largest number of earthquakes in the past 24 hours, but also had the largest volcanic earthquake.

According to Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Brennisteinsfjöll (15 quakes between mag 0.1-1.5), Clear Lake (32 quakes between mag 0.2-3.0), Fagradalsfjall (19 quakes between mag 0.2-1.0) Kilauea (13 quakes between mag 1.8-2.4), Krísuvík (23 quakes between mag 0.1-1.4)
