WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 14_2024
Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Two strong M6.0 earthquakes occurred and M5+ earthquakes concentrated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The first of the M6.0 earthquakes occurred off the northern coast of Chile. The epicenter was located 83.8 km WSW of Vallenar (population 44 895), and 113.2 km NNW of La Serena (population 154 521), Coquimbo Region.
3 000 people are estimated to have felt strong shaking, another 3 000 moderate and 558 000 light. The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.
The second M6.0 hit the State of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia. The epicenter was located about 172.2 km NNE of Colonia, Micronesia. 2 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking and 8 000 weak. The USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.
The energy from the Micronesia earthquake immediately moved across the fault system into nearby regions: Japan (M5.2), Philippines (M5.0), Vanuatu (M5.8), Kermadec Islands (M5.1) recorded moderate to strong seismic activity. On the other hand, energy from Chile moved toward the South Sandwich Islands (M5.7 & M5.2) and Pacific-Antarctic Ridge (M5.1)
The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has decreased to 879 which is within normal activity. This was due in part to decreased seismic activity in Iceland's volcanoes.
According to
Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
