Earthquakes around the world

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 28_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A strong magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit 447 km away from Attu Station, Alaska. The quake had a moderate depth of 119 km and was not felt. No significant damage or impact is expected from this quake and no particular alert was issued.

The same happened with the M5.4 earthquake in the Macquarie Islands 496 km from Australia. The quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so).

The total number of earthquakes recorded worldwide in the last 24 hours has increased to 1002 which is above normal range of activity. Seismic activity of volcanoes in Iceland has increased.

Magma accumulating again beneath volcanic hotspot in Iceland; Scientists warn another eruption

The town of Grindavik, evacuated during the last few months and whose residents have just returned, is once again under the threat of an eruption, said IMO. The office fears that magma would appear in a sudden, localised and intense micro-seismic activity.

According to Volcano earthquake report, volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT FEBRUARY 29_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. The seismic activity of the past 24 hours started with two moderate M5+ earthquakes that shook the Aras-asan Philippines region. These M5.3 and M5.4 earthquakes were likely aftershocks of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake in the Philippine Sea, 38 km north of Bislig City, Philippines, on December 2, 2023.
chrome_screenshot_3 dic. 2023 14_11_13 GMT-06_00.png

The energy of these earthquakes moved along the eastern boundary of the Philippine Plate towards the central part of the island of Honshu Japan where M5.1 and M5.2 earthquakes were recorded. All of these earthquakes occurred at depths that are considered shallow, between 10km and 50km.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT MARCH 03_2024

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A very strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 occurred offshore 462 km off Australia. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth (10 km) and there were no reports of casualties due to the inhospitable nature of the region. Well in fact the island is the habitat of royal penguins.

The earthquake had a estimated energy release equivalent to 10.6 atomic bombs and it is possible that this energy will move towards the region of the Kermadec Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands as well as to the east of the Ocean Pacific.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT MARCH 04_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Earthquakes M5.3 and M5.0 shook the Kyrgyzstan region very close to Lake Issyk-Kul and where earlier this year an M7.0 earthquake occurred.

The closest larger town where the M5.3 quake might have been felt is Talghar, a town with 42,000 inhabitants in Kazakhstan, in 49 km distance northeast of the epicenter. People likely experienced light shaking there. Several smaller towns and villages are located closer to the epicenter and might have experienced stronger shaking. In the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, 194 km away from the epicenter, the earthquake was probably felt as weak shaking. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. The strongest-ever recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 7.7. It had occurred 113 years ago .

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT MARCH 06_2024

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. The energy of the M6.1 and M6.7 earthquakes in the Macquarie Islands region continues to move northward. Solomon Islands (M5.0) Tual, Indonesia (M5.1) Hihifo, Tonga (M5.1) & Kinablangan, Philippines (M5.1 & M5.1) have recorded moderate activity. Possibly the region of greatest interest is Kinablangan Philippines because further north in the Davao region of the Philippine Sea an M7.6 earthquake was recorded last December 2, 2023 and the strongest-ever recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 8.0. It had occurred 51 years ago on Saturday, Dec 2, 1972,
