Noto Peninsula Earthquake: Rain in affected area; heavy snow expected from 23rd onwards; be careful
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20240121/k10014328871000.html #nhk_news
In the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, which had a maximum seismic intensity of 7, it has been raining intermittently, and in some places the ground has become loose due to the earthquake and previous rain.

From the 23rd onwards, the coldest air of this winter will flow in, strengthening the winter-like pressure pattern, and heavy snow is expected to occur mainly on the Sea of Japan side of eastern and western Japan, and the Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be careful about the impact on traffic.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, rain is falling mainly in northern Japan due to the influence of a low pressure system with a front moving over the sea east of the Kanto region.

Even in the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, it has been raining intermittently, and in some areas the ground has become loose due to the earthquake and previous rain, so we need to continue to be careful about landslides.

In addition, from the 23rd onwards, the coldest air of this winter with a temperature of -42 degrees or below will flow in around 5,500 meters above the ground, intensifying the winter-like pressure pattern, resulting in heavy snowfall from the 23rd to around the 25th of this month, mainly on the Sea of Japan side of eastern and western Japan. It is expected that.

The amount of snow that fell in the 24 hours up to the evening of the 23rd was 20 to 40 centimeters along the mountains of Niigata Prefecture and Hokuriku,10 to 20 centimeters in flat areas of Niigata Prefecture, and 5 centimeters in flat areas of Hokuriku such as Ishikawa Prefecture. It is expected to be 10 cm.

In addition, in the 24 hours up to the evening of the 24th of this month, ▽70 to 100 centimeters along the mountains in Niigata Prefecture,▽30 to 50 centimeters in flat areas in Niigata and Toyama prefectures, and ▽20 centimeters in flat areas in Ishikawa and Fukui prefectures. It is expected to be 40 centimeters.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be careful about the effects of snow accumulation and frozen roads on traffic, as well as to be careful of avalanches and snow accumulation.

Buildings damaged in the Noto Peninsula earthquake may collapse under the weight of snow, so caution is required.

In addition, in the disaster-stricken areas, many people are falling ill due to prolonged evacuation, and some people have been confirmed to have died from suspected ``disaster-related deaths.''

Please check with your family members or those around you to see if they are feeling unwell.

Seismic activity continues to be active

On the other hand, although the number of earthquakes with epicenters in and around the Noto region is gradually decreasing, seismic activity remains high.

As of 4 p.m. on the 21st, there had been 1,484 earthquakes with a seismic intensity of 1 or higher.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is warning people to be careful about shaking with a maximum seismic intensity of 5 or higher for the next two to three weeks.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 21_2024

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. The M6.5 earthquake in Brazil on January 20 was upgraded to M6.6. Moderate seismic activity continues in South America. San Antonio de los Cobres Argentina was shaken by an M5.4 earthquake at a considerable depth of 206 km, the central coast of Chile with M5.1 and Colombia recorded an M5.2 earthquake at an intermediate depth of 156 km. These earthquakes occurred in response to the M6.6 earthquake in the Brazilian Amazon very close to the border with Peru.
chrome_screenshot_20 ene. 2024 17_48_22 GMT-06_00 (1).png
According to the analyst Jesús Ramos, the energy of the M6.6 earthquake will move towards the central zone of Chile, Peru, Bolivia or Argentina and could cause a M6+ earthquake. It is not common for deep earthquakes to occur in this region of Brazil, so according to Dutchsinse's rule: "for every 100 km of depth a magnitude 0.2 is added to the magnitude of the original earthquake" (0.2 × 6= 1.2 + 6.6= 7.8) So, we could expect a an earthquake around M7.8 in the worst case scenario. If this happens, this will be the beginning of another sequence that will affect North and South America first and then Southeast Asia.

Other regions that could register an M6+ earthquake are the Caribbean region due to the connection of the South American plate and the Caribbean plate and in a worst case scenario a low M7+. The best that could happen is that this energy from the M6.6 earthquake will be released at the Atlantic Ocean Ridge.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 22_2024

Very high levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. As expected, the M6.6 earthquake in Brazil was the termination of the sequence that began earlier this year with the M7.5 earthquake in Noto Japan, however, the energy of the deep earthquake in the Brazilian Amazon will continue to be distributed in the South American region and even Central America and the Caribbean, in fact, Guatemala, Colombia and Chile recorded light seismic activity between M4+ and M5.3.

Thus, the M7.0 earthquake at the Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang border initiates another sequence, which will possibly promote strong to significant seismic activity in the Mediterranean region (Greece, Italy, Albania, Turkey, Bulgaria) and central Asia (Hindu Kush, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran) and Japan region on the Japan region.

According with USGS data 39,000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking, 363 000 strong, and 2 117 000 moderate. The USGS issued a Yellow alert for shaking-related fatalities (some casualties are possible) and an Orange alert for economic losses. Significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 23_2024

High levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A strong M6.3 earthquake shook the Port Vila region in southern Vanuatu. This event is related to the M6.4 earthquake that occurred in Tonga last January 18.
chrome_screenshot_15 ene. 2024 16_40_07 GMT-06_00.png
USGS estimated that 83 000 people felt moderate shaking and 84 000 light. The agency also issued a green alert (low) for fatalities and economic losses.

The energy of Tonga's earthquake is also the origin of the earthquakes that have occurred between the Nazca plate and the South American plate off the coast of Chile, which today recorded an M5.4 earthquake southeast of the Easter Islands.

The aftershocks of the M7.0 earthquake continue in the border between Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang, China. On the Kyrgyzstan side there were seven aftershocks of magnitude 4+ being an earthquake of M4.9 the strongest one, on the other hand, on the Chinese side there were two earthquakes of M5.2 and three of M4+

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 24_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. Two new aftershocks with magnitudes 5.5 and 5.2 shook the Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang region. It should be clarified that this region is located in a mountainous area of difficult access and the little information that is released reveals that so far three people have died and five people have been injured, two of them seriously.

An M5.4 earthquake shook northern Chile within the South American plate so it could be a response to the M6.6 earthquake in the Brazilian Amazon. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 118 km.

Moderate activity was recorded southwest of the Pacific Ocean in response to the M6.3 earthquake in Port-Vila and M6.4 in Tonga. Thus, Tonga recorded an M5.1 earthquake, the Kermadec Islands with magnitude 5.1 and finally New Zealand with M5.1.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours has increased to 1030 which is above the normal range of activity. This was mainly due to the seismic activity of the volcanoes in Iceland. According to Volcano earthquake report volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Campi Flegrei (10 quakes between mag 0.2-2.0), Clear Lake (25 quakes between mag 0.2-1.5) Fagradalsfjall (6 quakes between mag 0.9-1.3), Krísuvík (12 quakes between mag 0.3-1.8), Reykjanes (17 quakes between mag 0.3-1.7)

● Seismic activity in the Gulf of California and California. No tsunami threat.

● According to USGS "the quake had a very shallow depth of 15.5 km (10 mi) and was felt widely in the area. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would"

● According to Volcanodiscovery on July 5, 2019 a M7.1 hit the epicenter of this M4.2 earthquake.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 25_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. New aftershock with magnitudes 5.3 shook the Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang region. The main impact with M7.0 is having repercussions to the west of the epicenter as expected, thus an M5.0 earthquake was recorded in Turkey and an M5.4 earthquake in Djibouti in the horn of Africa and on the border with Somalia. There are no reports of damage or casualties so far in both cases.

Also, as expected, the energy from the M6.6 earthquake in the Brazilian Amazon is moving towards the northern part of Chile and the Caribbean plate, this same energy is also moving towards the Atlantic Ocean.

In the past 24 hours, Chile recorded an M5.0 earthquake at an intermediate depth of 116 km. The energy from Brazil's earthquake also moved towards the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge where two M4.8 earthquakes were recorded and from here to the north of the Ascension Islands where an M5.4 earthquake occurred. This outflow in the Atlantic Ocean is good news for the countries located east of the Caribbean plate. On the other hand, to the west of the same plate, El Salvador and Costa Rica registered light earthquakes M4.7 and M4.5 respectively.

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours has increased to 1005 which is above the normal range of activity. This was mainly due to the seismic activity of the volcanoes. According to Volcano earthquake report volcano earthquake swarm occurred in:
Phlegrean Fields) (9 quakes between mag 0.1-1.3), Clear Lake (35 quakes between mag 0.2-1.4), Coso (7 quakes between mag 0.2-1.9), Hrómundartindur (14 quakes between mag 0.1-1.4), Reykjanes (8 quakes between mag 0.3-1.0)
The strongest volcano earthquake occurred in Ebulobo Volcano with a magnitude 3.4 located 47 km west of Ende, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, on Thursday, Jan 25, 2024
quakes-at-volcanoes-25012024.jpg

Recent quakes worldwide map shows the distribution of the last 20 large earthquakes. We observe the dynamics that are occurring after the last two powerful earthquakes in China and Brazil. From Asia we can observe the earthquakes occurring around the M7.0 epicenter and whose energy has reached Turkey and the Horn of Africa. The same happens in South America with the M6.6 earthquake in Brazil whose energy has reached the Ascension Islands in the west of the African continent.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 26_2024

Low levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. The frequency and magnitude of the aftershocks of the M7.0 earthquake in the Kyrgyzstan - Xinjiang region has decreased, only M4+ earthquakes have been recorded in the last 24 hours, as the energy reaches the southwest of Cittadella del Capo, Italy, which recorded an M4.4 earthquake at a considerable depth of 273 km.

Papua New Guinea has recorded M5+ earthquakes in the last three days. The latest with M5.1 there is a concentration of energy that could be released with a significant event in the region.
chrome_screenshot_26 ene. 2024 19_00_58 GMT-06_00.png

The total number of earthquakes recorded in the last 24 hours has increased to 1041, which is above normal activity. This is due to the seismic activity of volcanoes, mainly in Iceland and California where the Clear Lake volcano has significantly increased its activity. So far an M4.2 has shaken the south of that volcano.

Magnitude 4.2 earthquake reported near The Geysers

The earthquake was centered in Lake County Friday afternoon. There were no immediate reports of damage.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake was centered just south of Clear Lake Friday afternoon.

It occurred at 1:28 p.m. about 1 1/4 miles north of Cobb, a community about 9 miles north of Middletown, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake might have been felt by over 24 million people across 5 countries: Guatemala (17.5 million), El Salvador (4.9 million), Mexico (820,000), Honduras (760,000), and Belize (13). Approx. 20,100,000 people were in areas with Light shaking (intensity IV), while approx. 3,500,000 people might have been affected by the highest-expected shaking intensity of V, or Moderate on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JANUARY 26_2024

Moderate levels of seismic activity have occurred in the last 24 hours. A strong M6.1 earthquake hit Guatemala at 23:52 local time. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 108 km, so it is estimated that 227,000 people felt moderate shaking and 22,008,000 felt mild shaking.

The USGS issued a Green alert (low) for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage. Guatemala’s emergency services agency CONRED reported that parts of a church’s facade in San Pablo Jocopilas fell, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
