For me, when I was 13-15 I wanted piercings and probably tattoos because I found them "cool". I guess that was kind of trying to be part of a group because I didn't get along very well with the standard people at school. So there was this group of "misfits" who had tattoes and piercings and I could get along with them better, so I probably started to feel that piercings where "cool" because they had them and I wanted to be part of them too. It was like a signature that you are different and you a part of a gang so to say.
At this age, we normally (not the case for everyone) group in gangs and we feel pressure to be a part of it, so I guess that might be the motivation for some teenagers and young adults.
Luckily, I stopped feeling they were cool when I was 16-18 so I don't have a tattoo and I removed my two piercings long ago.
