Ukraine rebel leader claims French 'experts' joining separatists

DONETSK, Ukraine: The president of the self-declared pro-Russian People's Republic of Donetsk claimed on Sunday French military "experts" were joining separatist forces battling government troops in eastern Ukraine.

"Tomorrow, we will receive officers from France. They are specialists ready to fight with us," Alexandre Zakhartchenko said at a Sunday press conference.

However, he gave no details on the French servicemen, nor did he specify their numbers.

There are also "Serbs and Swiss" among the pro-Moscow militants who are fighting for "European and socialist ideals", Zakhartchenko claimed.

He also said the separatists had launched an offensive against Ukrainian forces in the south of Donetsk -- the largest rebel-held city in Ukraine that has seen intense fighting in recent weeks.

Zakhartchenko said hundreds of soldiers loyal to Kiev had been killed or injured in battles around the city. None of his claims could be independently verified.)

The conflict seems to draw people in from many countries. The number of alleged French officers may be as little as two. That is all that is required for the plural to be valid. If someone in France was upset that Bank Paribas had to pay a huge fine for violating a US command, one should hardly be surprised. If the latest news is confirmed, the it amounts to a major defeat of the junta in the offering and also a potential for substantial "trophies".

The army of the self-proclaimed Donetsk’s People's Republic (DPR) on Monday reported that 107 Ukrainian National Guard servicemen were killed and 75 wounded over the past 24 hours.

Militias said on Sunday, August 24, that they had decided to change their tactic to full-scale operations by fully capable formations and units, providing them with necessary fire support.

During the overnight fighting, the DPR army completely blocked a large grouping of Ukrainian military forces in six settlements - 5,000 servicemen from the Azov, Aidar and Dnieper battalions equipped with different types of hardware.

By Monday morning, the DPR army had trapped at least 7,000 Ukrainian servicemen armed with about 120 tanks, over 380 armored vehicles and about 1,000 Grad and Uragan multiple launch rocket systems.

The call-up age will soon increase to 70 years of age if this continues.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has announced plans for a second humanitarian convoy to be sent to eastern Ukraine, urging foreign actors and agencies to participate in continuing efforts at relieving the crisis.

Failure to do so would constitute a violation of international law, he warned.

“Anyone in need of aid shall receive it,” the FM said, stressing that it is important to learn from the mistakes of the first attempt and to look forward to closer cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities this time around.

He stressed that as the indiscriminate shelling of areas such as Lugansk continues, the humanitarian need for water and food grows. This has been acknowledged by humanitarian agencies and itnernational actors at large.

The distribution of aid is currently underway, and is headed by the ICRC.

The FM also added that the shelling of schools, hospitals, kindergartens and other vulnerable institutions and structures can no longer be excused by claims of “wrongful shooting” or be written off as “accidental.”

Minister Lavrov emphasized that Russia is willing and ready to participate in full in any type of negotiations on ending hostilities in the east, and expressed hope that Tuesday’s meeting in Minsk will include a focus on the crisis in Ukraine.

“We certainly expect that tomorrow’s meeting in Minsk will feature a discussion on the humanitarian crisis,” Lavrov said. “We express hope that all participants will urge for the removal of any obstacles to smooth aid delivery to those who are most in need of it,” he added. (Etc.)

Russia wants to send a second humanitarian aid convoy to eastern Ukraine, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday, introducing a likely new topic of discord on the eve of crucial talks between the two countries' leaders.

Ukraine and its Western allies denounced the arrival of a first huge convoy that crossed the border last week without Kiev's permission. But Lavrov said more aid was needed to ease the plight of civilians caught up in four months of fighting between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military.

"The humanitarian situation is not improving but deteriorating," Lavrov told a news conference. "We want to reach an agreement on all conditions for delivering a second convoy by the same route... in the coming days."

He was speaking a day before talks in the Belarussian capital Minsk, where Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko will come face to face for the first time since early June.

The first convoy of more than 200 Russian trucks crossed into Ukraine last Friday, prompting the Ukrainian state security chief to denounce it as "a direct invasion." The trucks withdrew again at the weekend and Lavrov said the aid was now being distributed. (Etc)

But besides the legalistic argument, these "human rights" organizations nitpick about parading murderers of unarmed civilians for the most part and are very quiet about the atrocities, war crimes and crimes against humanity of the fascist Kiev junta and the Right Sector and "National Guard" Nazis. Thanks, LdC. Have you been able to find any numbers? For example, this article (_http://www.aljazeera.com/news/europe/2014/07/civilian-deaths-mount-eastern-ukraine-201472991336801151.html) says the Militia estimates 7400 dead Ukrainian military. I'd like to collect some sources dealing with this issue: the fact that the Militia is doing a lot better than the press reports, and the Ukrainian army is doing a lot worse.

Gleb Bazov of Slavyangrad just tweeted his estimates for the numbers dead: "Difficult to say. I would estimate the number of civilians dead at about 7,000. Militia - 2,500 - 3,000. Ukraine - 16,000." In the latest C's sessions, they gave the number of dead on both sides during the "ATO" as 8662.
