South Africa before tomorrow’s lockdown.
As the local version of lockdown comes with total ban on alcohol and cigarettes as well, you can imagine todays scramble. While I understand the alcohol, I cannot turn my mind around the cigarettes. Why banning cigarette sales during a lockdown? Right down from Total Nanny State Control Playbook. It is going to be tough and many people will show terrible withdrawal based behavior.
But like during the prohibition there will be ways and means. To paraphrase the C’s , ‘Wait and see.’

There are so many sentences amongst all the post which whom I'm agreeing very much, or which I second strongly. About ten days ago I decided to smile to every person I meet on the street and to be the best version of myself for others. To do not wait anymore, to do not postpone anything, to just do and be with faith and with openness toward future and toward others. To be excellent as luc mentioned in his very uplifting post. I'm very thankful that I found forum and sott almost a year ago now, I don't know where I would have been now without all efforts of yours. I'm hesitating to post anything as I do not believe that I have anything to contribute seriously, comparing to all the excellent analysis that have been done throughout the thread, but I saw people encouraging others to speaks their minds and gives observations, so this encouraged me to give what I can for now and try to network more.

Thank you for your perspective, karo. I think you have the right attitude and a little gesture like a smile can really help someone to feel okay.

So please do network more!

Here is what it says literally:
“Tomorrow, about 1.9 million elderly and chronically ill Muscovites MANDATORY to observe the home regime of self-isolation, which will last until April 14.”
MANDATORY to comply. Not a recommendation, but a direct ban on appearing on the street for almost TWO MILLION people.

Well, not exactly. The document (a) allows the elderly to visit shops, pharmacies and go for a walk in not crowded places, (b) does not contain any measures of punishment for violation, and (c) promises a reward of 4,000 rubles for those elderly people who do not violate these rules, otherwise only 2,000 rubles. This is an important context, imo.

Today the police was strong in my neighbourhood, checking people and cars. And also we saw a military truck pass in front of my apartment and 3 soldiers walking on the street. So things are going fast. I also read that people have to go to buy their food at the nearer shop. It is almost an obligation. The police are starting to check what you buy and what you buy have to be "essentials", not bear for example. I tell you this is becoming very creepy. The fine can be of 500 euros and they started to to it in a city but they will do it everywhere because I have the impression that they will put ration tickets as in the WWII. You bet?

This is really a hard to believe testimony I must say, I wonder why it is so creepy over your place? What is going on - are inhabitants over there of any different clay than the rest of the world? Maybe policies depends on what gov thinks about their citizens? And apply policies that fits to "general stereotype based profile"? Maybe there gov is afraid of people rebel against and this is why they applied heavy duty staff everywhere. Just thinking out loud considering why it all differentiate so much amongst the world. Anyway it all leads to one point as we know from last session.

Meanwhile, here in the UK, even though the government guidelines are allowing us to leave the house to exercise once per day, people in local Facebook groups are complaining about people walking and jogging and suggesting people call the police! I think this is mostly due to the "stay home to save lives" being promoted in the media right now. See the image below for some examples. If it wasn't so serious it might be funny... Thankfully, there were lots of people chiming in with messages of support and advocating going out for walks for mental and physical health. I simply quoted the government guidelines to highlight the idiocracy of the first woman's post, didn't pick a fight, just said what we LEGALLY can still do.

Thank you Jenn. A very valuable reminder that we need to constantly remind ourselves that we cannot control anything outside ourselves. No one is coming to save us and in fact some may come to cause us a lot of grief in the near future. As I have mentioned a few times having this Forum to keep us grounded is astonishing.

The measures here that are in effect since yesterday are not really affecting me much at all for now. Can still go to the countryside, Went on a 40 min drive yesterday to the countryside with my partner, saw one police car the whole trip. Not much on the roads mostly trucks, few cars, its like a Sunday morning. I bought kettlebells before Christmas to work out from home so don't need the gym, Can Still bring my elderly client out in his chair to the park people are social distancing in the park, comical to watch.

Walked outside my apartment block earlier sun shining blue sky felt a really cold breeze, felt cold in the car got to my destination 20 min drive. Stepped out the car felt nice and warm slight warm breeze, strange.

Helicopter is flying above the parks hovering there for a while then moves on. I've heard young people are being picked up by police if hanging around in groups, people are asking for their heads for being in groups. Panick buying seems to have stopped, things are calm out side for now. Knowing whats happening seems to be the same process in most countries, little steps to the final lockdown curfews etc .

Im working today, will drive to the countryside tomorrow on my day off and will continue to do so until I can't, that I feel is coming very soon. The only impact it will have is no more trips to the country side, can still go to work. Will just read on my days of if the roads are heavily policed. Feeling very calm about the whole thing. Sorry to hear about others losing jobs etc.
Also Relying on supermarkets as your only source for food is not ideal. If possible for in the future, Best to have other contacts from local markets or online. Also check out the canning thread that was posted earlier. Here it is again in case anyone missed it
Speaking of useful idiots (Celebrities) others have mentioned.

I would guess that the cigarettes ban might be due to the common medical thinking that smoking equals a pre-existing condition. Nevertheless, it is in fact a strong control method, that totally ignores the responsibility of oneself for oneself. This potentially opens the door for a lot more such restrictions, like e.g. eating meat. This is very serious and dangerous.

Perhaps we should also keep in mind that Moscowtimes is not a reliable site and likes to promote half-truths about Russia. It likes to add to the Russophobia and anti-Russian propaganda, knowing that most people don't check it out further. That is not to say that there is nothing to it, but just that it might need a little verification from other sources.

It was reported on both Swedish newspapers 'Aftonbladet' and 'Expressen' online yesterday, about what the leader had said, googled and decided to post the item from some English website instead - Moscowtimes. Didn't know they are unreliable. So thanks for pointing that out.

But for what it's worth, the original reporting seems to be from 'Caucasian Knot':

Quoted from article:
At a government meeting, Ramzan Kadyrov criticized one of the persons who committed Umrah, the so-called "small hajj" to Mecca. On the air of the "Grozny" TV Channel, the leader of Chechnya called on residents of the republic to take the threat of the coronavirus infection more seriously.

According to the leader of the region, death is a worthy punishment for infecting other people.

So I suppose then that he allegedly said it on "Grozny TV Channel", or in a government meeting, the article doesn't seem to make that clear.

There seems to be no other sources.

Yes, thank you karo, and everyone for continuing to network. It's good to have perspectives from around the world about how different governments are responding to the "crisis". They can give hints about how things will proceed in the future.

I'm wondering which country will break ranks first with the lunacy, and say "enough is enough"? Trump is trying to do it it seems, but he's being hemmed in by all the yapping media and the opposition he faces in the House. Sad.

Meant to say in my last post. Our cooker decided to blow up yesterday heating element through out lots of sparks, it's only 3 years old the one previous was 14 years old never had any problems with it. Was 45 min on the phone trying to get someone out, getting passed around different departments through the beko official number. Gave up on them and rang a couple of independent appliance fixers. Not an expensive fix element only costs around 30e I'd say. Got two quotes 150e told him were to go with his price and not to be robbing people. Other quote was 90e. Getting fixed tomorrow morning.👍

I think that Putin, like Trump, is having to follow the "guidelines" to some extent because of the fear domination created by the Consortium and its tools: WHO/MSM.

Meanwhile, all is not perfect in China yet:

And the USA is sick in more ways than one:

Yup, if it was up to Trump everything would get back to normal by early April. But you just know they (whoever they are in this case) are not going to allow that. But I have the feeling that the US will be one of the places that ends this in a little under two months as per the C's, thanks to Trump. But we'll see, I'm not particularly good at predicting the future!

Makes me think an opening volley in the battle of good vs evil -
Trump’s Easter goal in war on virus a nod to faith, business
March 25, 2020

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s “beautiful” idea to reopen the U.S. economy by Easter Sunday and pack church pews that day was dreamed up during a conference call among business leaders desperate to get the country back up and running.

But his target date for easing coronavirus restrictions is another outstretched hand to a group he has long courted: evangelical Christians.

Cooped up at the White House and watching the stock market tumble, Trump had already been eager to ease federal guidelines aimed at halting the spread of a virus that had infected more than 55,000 Americans when about a dozen business leaders convened a conference call on Sunday.

“There was a concern — not unanimity, but consensus — that you had to have a reopening of the economy at some point soon,” said Stephen Moore, a conservative economist and informal Trump adviser. On the call, Moore said, he argued in favor of setting a specific date as a goal by which point the economy could gradually begin to be reopened.

“One of the things we were saying was that this would instill some confidence in people, that there would be some kind of light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

While many wanted to see that date set even sooner than Easter, “it’s something that’s coming up that would be obviously a mark on someone’s calendar,” Moore said. “I had made this point that we should call this economic resurrection day.”

Though it’s unclear exactly when the idea made its way to Trump or whether others in his orbit had pegged the date as well — one official said they had heard the idea mentioned multiple times around the Oval Office — by late Sunday, Trump was publicly siding with such thinking, tweeting: “WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF.” On Monday, he said he was considering easing his administration’s recommendations that Americans largely stay home within weeks, not months. And on Tuesday, he formally endorsed the idea of an Easter goalpost during a Fox News Channel virtual town hall.

“Easter’s a very special day for me. Wouldn’t it be great to have all of the churches full?” Trump later told Fox. “You’ll have packed churches all over our country. I think it would be a beautiful time.”

The idea drew alarm from many public health experts, who noted that even New York — thought to be several weeks ahead of the rest of the nation — has yet to reach its peak in infections. Unless Americans continue to isolate themselves for weeks, those experts warn, a virus that has already killed more than 1,000 people in the U.S. will continue to spread like wildfire across the nation, overwhelming hospitals already starved of needed supplies. The number infected has risen to more than 69,000.

But for conservative evangelicals who remain among Trump’s most ardent supporters, the president’s choice of the holiest date on their faith’s calendar was meaningful even as a purely aspirational goal to reboot American life.

The timeline “injected hope into an indefinite ordeal,” said Johnnie Moore, an evangelical adviser to the administration. “And it was very clear in hearing him speak that not only is there an end to this … but when we do win it, we’re going to have a celebration, and that celebration will partly include gratitude to God.”

Ralph Reed, a veteran GOP activist and Trump ally who chairs the Faith & Freedom Coalition, cautioned that restrictions shouldn’t be eased “if it’s a bad idea from a public health standpoint,” but also welcomed the Easter target.

“I will be encouraging the White House, again within the parameters of what makes sense from a public health standpoint, to do everything we can to make that date,” Reed said, “because I think it would be symbolic, it would be significant, it would be inspirational.”

To that end, the White House has been discussing the mechanics of a rollback aimed at getting Americans back to work if they don’t live in current virus hot spots. Among the ideas under discussion: advising that those who are most at risk for severe complications — including seniors — continue to isolate themselves, while younger people go back to work.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.
But for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death. The vast majority of people recover.

Even if Trump were to ease federal guidelines, states across the country, from California to New York, have already put in place a patchwork of rules to try to halt the virus’ spread. The administration has so far said it has no plans to try to overrule local restrictions.
[...]
But even among white evangelicals who are a key component of the president’s political base, there were reservations. National Association of Evangelicals President Walter Kim said that many who share his faith “wish to do what is in the best interest of society as a whole,” citing decisions to cancel physical worship services and various programs.

Kim added that any “celebrations we pursue on Easter would need to be in that spirit of life.”

For Suarez, Trump’s choice of an Easter target remains an important gesture regardless of whether he goes through with it. Suarez, executive vice president at the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, described the president’s elevation of that date as a fresh signal of the “respect within the administration for the word of God and for Christian faith.”

Among those signals, Suarez noted, was Pence’s call during a Saturday briefing by the coronavirus task force he leads for Americans to keep donating to their local ministries when most houses of worship have moved their services online.

Little camper butane burners are nice to have and very inexpensive. I got my first one for just a few bucks at a garage sale. I now have a few extra, bought before a major hurricane. Canned butane isn't very expensive, readily available by the case.

Well, Brazil's Bolsonaro seems to try it. But will he succeed? I think they won't allow him. It's too strong a force to resist openly, it seems to me.

Add, curious this time RT did not included the video Bolsonaro wants economy, jobs prioritized in Brazil’s fight against coronavirus

Bolsonaro, President of Brazil might had been exposed, his pronouncement went against odds today.--it has English subtittles
