Earthquake in Chile: Are you all OK?

Thank goodness you checked in! We were pretty worried over here!
I'm really really touched. I also wrote to Ailen to tell I was OK and Manuel is going well also. I have nothing physically but emotionally, thinking of what people and their children whould have experienced in those moments is overwhelming at this moment.
I have been awakened by the soil movement because I sleep on the floor, and even if I experienced many other earthquakes in the past, this one had something sinister in it.
I would like to add something. The most difficult in catastrophs (and we will experience more in the near future) is communication. Thankfully internet came back rapidely but international calls are impossible for the moment. This is a point to consider for the future imho

So many earthquakes in rapid succession; this will surely wake somebody up. Unfortunately, I'm sure plenty of people will be convinced that this is a symptom of "2012." Casualties seem to be much lower than in Haiti, which is a good thing, though the resultant tsunamis have yet to hit land. It's good to hear that other forum members are alright, though. :)

Very good to hear you and your families there are all ok.

In looking at the earthquake map, there appears to be no less than 40 earthquakes/aftershocks there in the last 24hrs.

The one off Japan is shown as well.

Thanks for the article Laura. Lots of good advice that will likely come in handy for many. Pretty new to me.

This was the first thing I saw when I got up this morning and went looking for news. Glad that Manuel and mkrnhr are okay and not injured. Ailén, you mentioned that there are 3 other members there. Who are the other two members? Have they reported yet? Sure hope they are okay too. :scared:

It´s good to hear that the forum members in Chile are o.k., even if I don´t know them.

This evening I saw the news in the german TV channel ARD. In the report about the earthquake in Chile there was one sentence, which seemed a little bit "strange". The reporter made the comment, that we have to expect earthquakes with even a higher magnitude than this one, BECAUSE this one was so strong.
I tried to find this report on the internet but they show only the short version.

I've been looking for more information on this quake, and the few videos that showed footage of it as it happened have been yanked off. Makes me wonder why?

Also makes me wonder if this is a ripple effect of messing around with techtonic forces via Haiti....or worse.

I'm hoping all our members can report in and let us know what's up and if they need any help.

I think it was mkrnhr and another member who we know is okay, he reported on facebook. I don't know of the third or other members though.

It's good to see you guys are okay in Chile! I just checked the Members map and it said there are 3 members in Chile. 1 in La Serena, 2 in Santiago. Unless more have been added, 2 of the 3 have checked in.

Now I found the link to the News of the TV channel ARD which I mentioned before.

IronFloyd and one of our Spanish members, whom I can't find in the forum. He is safe though. He reported it on facebook.

I'm sure glad that you are OK. Let's hope that other members are safe from the tsunami.

Just reported by the Associated Press: Tsunami Spares U.S., Takes Aim at Japan

By MARK NIESSE and AUDREY McAVOY, Associated Press Writers – 4 mins ago

HONOLULU – With a rapt world watching the drama unfold on live television, a tsunami raced across a quarter of the globe on Saturday and set off fears of a repeat of the carnage that caught the world off guard in Asia in 2004.
The tsunami delivered nothing more than a glancing blow to the U.S. and South Pacific, but Japan was still bracing for a direct hit and waves up to 10 feet high. Scientists worried the giant wave could gain strength as it rounds the planet and consolidates.
The tsunami was spawned by a ferocious magnitude-8.8 earthquake in Chile that sent waves barreling north across the Pacific at the speed of a jetliner. But Pacific islands had ample time to prepare because the quake struck several thousand miles away.
By the time the tsunami hit Hawaii — a full 16 hours after the quake — officials had already spent the morning ringing emergency sirens, blaring warnings from airplanes and ordering residents to higher ground.
The islands were back to paradise by the afternoon, but residents endured a severe disruption and scare earlier in the day: Picturesque beaches were desolate, million-dollar homes were evacuated, shops in Waikiki were shut down, and residents lined up at supermarkets to stock up on food and at gas stations.
Others parked their cars along higher ground to watch the ocean turbulence, and one brave soul stayed behind and surfed before being urged by an emergency helicopter pilot to get out of the water.
There were no immediate reports of widespread damage, injuries or deaths in the U.S. or in the Pacific islands, but a tsunami that swamped a village on an island off Chile killed at least five people and left 11 missing.
Waves hit California, but barely registered amid stormy weather. A surfing contest outside San Diego went on as planned.
Despite Internet rumors of significant problems in coastal areas of California, no injuries or major property damage occurred.
It was still possible that the tsunami would gain strength again as it heads to Japan, and nearly 50 countries and island chains remained under tsunami warnings from Antarctica to Russia. That's what happened in 1960, when a deadly tsunami killed dozens of people in Hilo, Hawaii, then went on to claim some 200 lives in Japan.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON THE: "TRIANGLE OF LIFE"

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of
the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most
experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save
lives in an earthquake. ...

This is also on Snopes.com. I'd like to quote the text but for some reason the page won't let me highlight the text in order to copy/paste it. Basically, due to the building code differences, the American Red Cross claim that very few US buildings collapse or pancake, so Doug Copp's recommendations may not work as well inside US buildings. The Snopes article paints Copp as some sort of self-proclaimed expert guru under investigation by the US Department of Justice Fraud unit. But then again, Snopes cannot always be trusted.
