1964 Alaska earthquake
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Alaska_earthquake
The 1964 Alaskan earthquake, also known as the Great Alaskan earthquake and Good Friday earthquake, occurred at 5:36 P.M. AST on Good Friday, March 27.[2] Across south-central Alaska, ground fissures, collapsing structures, and tsunamis resulting from the earthquake caused about 139 deaths.[3]

Lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, the magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake was the most powerful recorded in North American history, and the second most powerful recorded in world history. Soil liquefaction, fissures, landslides, and other ground failures caused major structural damage in several communities and much damage to property. Anchorage sustained great destruction or damage to many inadequately earthquake engineered houses, buildings, and infrastructure (paved streets, sidewalks, water and sewer mains, electrical systems, and other man-made equipment), particularly in the several landslide zones along Knik Arm. Two hundred miles southwest, some areas near Kodiak were permanently raised by 30 feet (9.1 m). Southeast of Anchorage, areas around the head of Turnagain Arm near Girdwood and Portage dropped as much as 8 feet (2.4 m), requiring reconstruction and fill to raise the Seward Highway above the new high tide mark.

In Prince William Sound, Port Valdez suffered a massive underwater landslide, resulting in the deaths of 30 people between the collapse of the Valdez city harbor and docks, and inside the ship that was docked there at the time. Nearby, a 27-foot (8.2 m) tsunami destroyed the village of Chenega, killing 23 of the 68 people who lived there; survivors out-ran the wave, climbing to high ground. Post-quake tsunamis severely affected Whittier, Seward, Kodiak, and other Alaskan communities, as well as people and property in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California.[4] Tsunamis also caused damage in Hawaii and Japan. Evidence of motion directly related to the earthquake was reported from all over the earth.

I live about 200 miles south from Anchorage, and across water from the Earthquake site.
But still felt that, strong shackling jolt that caused me to awake, but strangely I didn't panic, just see what time was, and it was 1:32am.

I found out that, some homes were destroyed in explosion or fire from gas tank. A road damage near kenai too.

Most place in Alaska homes uses own gas tank, because homes are spread out to untamed wild areas, including mine.
Luckily, last summer, I converted gas to use electric only in this house and got rid of gas tank.

No reports of casualties, major damage after Spain earthquake

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-spain-quake-idUSKCN0V30CB

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or major damage across Spain's southern coast early on Monday after a major earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck about 162 km (100 miles) southeast of Malaga.

The quake hit at 11.22 p.m. ET on Sunday (0422 GMT), the Spanish National Geographic Institute said, and was followed by six lesser aftershocks. The U.S. Geological Survey had earlier reported the tremor had a magnitude of 6.6 and was registered at 33 km (20 miles) deep.

Emergency services in the southern region of Andalucia said in a statement on their Twitter feed they had received 250 calls from alarmed residents.

The tremors and aftershocks were felt throughout the region, including in the cities of Malaga, Cordoba, Seville and Granada.

In Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the Moroccan coast, emergency services said they had received more than 200 calls from people warning of damage to properties. Schools would remain shut on Monday so buildings could be inspected.

Media in Melilla said power was being restored to areas where it had been cut.

Alaska’s 7.1 earthquake largest of its kind ever recorded in Cook Inlet
http://www.adn.com/article/20160124/alaska-s-71-earthquake-largest-its-kind-ever-recorded-cook-inlet

The tectonic cause of the quake, recorded at a depth of 76 miles, was the Pacific Plate of the earth's crust sliding beneath the North American Plate.

The quake in 7.1 in Alaska and the 6.2 in Mediterranean today are quite strong for those regions, like you AngelBurst, i read the Alaska one is the strongest on record.

' at magnitude 7.1 it is the largest intermediate-depth earthquake recorded beneath Cook Inlet since the regional seismic network was established in late 1960s. '

and there was one in Malta about a week ago (added: 13th Jan) that was about M4.4 - which i mention because it seems unusual areas are experiencing strong quakes (also i couldn't find it on sott.net but i may just have not looked hard enough)
