The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.5 quake in Ethiopia 64 km (40 mi) ENE of Ādīgrat (Tigray) (pop: 65,000) Ādīgrat, Tigray, The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, December 26th, 2022, at 3:21 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Dallol is the nearest volcano located at 41km from epicenter.

Dallol hydrothermal field is located in a remote part of the northern Danakil Depression in NE Ethiopia. It is the lowest known sub-aerial volcanic area in the world.
Dallol is one of the world's most spectacular landscape: a vast area of uplifted thick salt deposits affected by intense fumarolic activity, probably caused by an active volcanic system beneath several kilometers of evaporation salt deposits.

The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, December 31st, 2022, at 4:12 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 2.5 miles below the surface. Salton Buttes is the nearest volcano located at 75 km from epicenter. The Salton Buttes volcanic field consist of 5 small rhyolitic lava domes built above sediments of the Colorado River delta within the Salton Sea geothermal field, located at the SE margin of the Salton Sea, California.
