Strong earthquake Mw 6.6 in border region between Panama and Colombia

Date 25 May 2023 | Time: 03:05:38 UTC | 8.86 N ; 77.25 W | Depth: 40 km | Mw 6.6

Tonight a strong offshore earthquake of magnitude 6.6 shook the border region between Colombia and Panama. The quake manifested at 03:05:38 UTC (22:05:38 local time) directly on the extended border line between the two countries. The epicenter was in the Gulf of Darien and was located by the EMSC 39 km north of Acandí, Colombia.

The earthquake focus was located at a depth of 40 km. There was no tsunami hazard due to the great depth of the focus. Despite the relatively great depth, the earthquake was clearly felt in the coastal region and was perceived as strong. It jolted people out of their sleep, some of whom were terrified. The quake had even been felt in parts of Panama City. So far, nothing has been reported about damages, which is also due to the fact that the area is only sparsely populated. The coastal region is known as Darien Gap and is covered by dense jungle.

Darien Gap represents an important land route for migrants on their way north from South America. In recent years, hundreds of thousands of migrants have passed through this area, according to local media.

The tectonic situation of the region is complex, as several crustal plates are involved in the tectonic processes of the region. First, there is the plate of South America, which is preceded by a microplate in the region of northern Colombia. This is the North Andes plate. West of it lies the small Panama plate as part of Central America. To the south, the Cocos Plate and the Nazca Plate abut the first two plates mentioned. In the north, the Caribbean plate collides with the continental plates and is subducted. Thereby a triple junction with the Panama and the North Andes Plate is formed. In the area of this triple junction the current earth tremor manifested itself.

As so often the indication that strong earthquakes can trigger volcanic eruptions. The Colombian volcano Nevado del Ruiz, for example, is located a good 500 km from the epicenter and thus still within the earthquake's sphere of influence. Nevado del Ruiz is active and erupting ash clouds that today rise to an altitude of 6500 meters. A major volcanic eruption has been feared for months.

PLANETARY GEOMETRY AND ENERGY MOVEMENT UPDATE MAY 25_2023

According to Analyst Jesus Ramos Ka-tet M6.6 earthquake in Panama changes the outlook for the Caribbean area. Energy will move from the Cocos Plate to the Caribbean Plate, so an earthquake warning is issued for Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic with an earthquake that can reach M7+ in the worst case. The next 48 hours will give us signals as to whether or not the earthquake may or may not occur in the Caribbean region or if this energy migrates towards South America, mainly Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, in which case an earthquake no larger than M6.0 would be expected.
chrome_screenshot_1685041078616.png
There may be some light activity in the rest of Central America and it is not expected to exceed M6+, however, the alert for an intraplate earthquake between Morelos and Puebla in Mexico remains, possibly a low M6.

In the case of Chile, a significant impact is still expected, mainly in the Concepción region, Santiago and Valparaiso, possibly an M7+ in the worst case scenario.

On the other hand, SSGEOS mentioned last May 18 about a planetary convergence and a lunar peak that would give rise to large seismic activity.
We see a clustering of critical planetary geometry on the 20th and 21st including a lunar geometry

Following the lunar peak on 17 May, there is still a slight possibility of larger seismic activity today. Increased seismic activity is likely to occur 20-21 May Typically above M5.6. A larger seismic event may occur around 22 May that could reach M6.5 and in the worst case higher than M6.5. Much depends on the condition of the earth's crust and the stress between faults.
The result was the M7.7 and M7.6 earthquakes in the Loyalty and Tonga Islands respectively and the consequent aftershocks and energy movements.
chrome_screenshot_1684689571847.png
What can we expect in the coming days? Some stronger seismic activity is possible in the next few days. A convergence of very critical planetary geometry from 31 May to 2 June can result in major to great seismic activity, potentially reaching high 7 to 8+ magnitude.

There are planetary conjunctions on May 31 to June 2. There are three planetary conjunctions in three days:

●Mars, Mercury and Saturn.
●Venus, Mercury and Neptune.
●Venus, Sun and Jupiter.

All three conjunctions are critical. We can expect important seismic activity that could reach M7 or M8.

The conjunction Venus, Mercury and Neptune alone can result in a high M7 earthquake.
This planetary geometry precedes a full moon on June 04. This situation is similar to what happened on February 4 and 5 before the great earthquakes in Turkey.

Earthquake rocks Melbourne shortly before midnight, waking residents
An earthquake struck Melbourne late on Sunday night, shaking the city and waking residents.

“A magnitude-3.8 earthquake has been recorded with an epicentre near Sunbury, Victoria,” the Victoria State Emergency Service said.

“The earthquake occurred at 11.41pm, with widespread reports (of people feeling it). No injuries or damage have been recorded at this time.”

Sunbury is located about 35 kilometres northwest of the Melbourne CBD.

Melbourne residents swiftly hopped on social media to check that what they’d felt really was an earthquake. Many said they’d been woken up by the event.

The Panama earthquake with an M6.6 occurred at the boundaries of three plates: the Caribbean Plate, the South American Plate and the Cocos Plate.
plate_tectonics_labels-850x502.png
Now, according Ka-tet's analysis, Earthquakes towards South America could be good news for the Caribbean plate. There are 3 possibilities that could happen in the next days

1- Movement towards the Atlantic Ocean with a worst case scenario of M7+ leaving earthquakes between Ecuador and Peru with a low M6 and Colombia M5+ but releasing the Caribbean region. (This scenario has probably already happened with the event in Colombia)
2- Movement towards the Caribbean region, mainly Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba with a worst case M6+ M7+ and towards Venezuela with a maximum magnitude of 5.
3- Movement towards South America. Between M5.5 and M6.8 for the Antofagasta coastal zone of Chile. Argentina could also register a very deep earthquake of M5+ and M6.8 worst case.
