Moderate levels of seismic activity occurred in the past 24 hours. A strong magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in the Solomon Sea near the coast of Solomon Islands. The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Kirakira, a town with 1,100 inhabitants. USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 7.8. It had occurred 85 years ago.
