Earthquakes around the world

WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 19_2025

Between July 18 and 19, moderate levels of seismic activity were recorded. As expected, the energy from the M6.2 earthquake in Panama moved toward the Cocos Plate in Central America and southern Mexico, but also toward the northern East Pacific Rise, where the largest earthquakes (M5.6 and M5.4) have occurred.

So far, there has been no response in the west coast region of Canada or the US to the M7.3 earthquake in Alaska.

A strong magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit 48 km (30 mi) away from Shahrud, Semnan Province, Iran. No aftershocks have been recorded so far. Earthquakes of ≥M5.0 are common in this region of Iran. The last major earthquake in this region was M7.0 and occurred 25 years ago.

Most earthquakes ≥M5.0 between July 18 and 19 occurred in the western Pacific Ocean & Indian Ocean. Among these, the M5.4 earthquake in Myanmar is worth noting. This quake was likely an aftershock of the 7.7 quake that occurred in Sagaing Region, Myanmar on March 28, 2025.

It is possible that the energy from the M7.3 earthquake in Alaska could move to the west coast of America. It would not be unusual to see a ≥M6.0 response towards Vancouver Island, the Oregon region, California, and Baja California. Nor can we rule out the possibility that the energy will move toward the Kamchatsk Peninsula, Japan, or Taiwan.

Moderate earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale shakes central Switzerland – tremors felt as far away as Germany

Date: July 21, 2025 | Time: 10:52:17 UTC | Coordinates: 46.538 ; 7.860 | Depth: 4 km | Magnitude 4.2

This morning, the Bern region in Switzerland was shaken by a moderate earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was only 4 kilometers deep, which is why the tremor was felt more strongly than one would expect based on its magnitude.

Earthquake Switzerland. © EMSC

The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 10:52:17 UTC, was located 17 km east of Frutigen by the EMSC. Bern is located 55 kilometers northwest of the epicenter. The EMSC received numerous reports of the earthquake from a radius of almost 200 kilometers, including some from Germany. Witnesses near the epicenter reported that objects began to shake and, in some cases, fell over. A deep rumbling was heard before the tremor. There are no reports of damage, but cracks and rockfalls may have occurred in the mountains.

From a tectonic point of view, the region south of Bern is dominated by a tectonically complex transition zone between the Molasse Basin, the Helvetic Zone, and the Alpine units, with the epicenter already located in the high Alps.

One of the most significant faults in the region is the Rhone-Simplon line, which partly follows the Rhone Valley. This is a dextral transverse fault. The current earthquake occurred a few kilometers away from this significant fault zone and may have been caused by tensions in this fault system.

The driving force behind the Alpine orogeny is the collision of the African Plate with the Eurasian Plate, which pushes up the mountains. In principle, the same forces that are responsible for earthquakes in the Mediterranean region are also responsible for the earthquakes in Switzerland.

SSGEOS has taken a break from its activity, so we do not know what planetary geometries were involved, however, from July 14 to date there have been three ≥M7.0 earthquakes there have also been several ≥M6.0 earthquakes most of these earthquakes have occurred in the western part of the Ring of Fire.

Screenshot_20250726-184408_Calendar.jpg

According to USGS this earthquake had a magnitude 6.9 and 4 aftershocks (above mag. 2) have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 5.4 quake.

The energy from this earthquake will undoubtedly move across the tectonic plates toward New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. At best, it will move toward the Indian Ocean or the south-central ridge of the Pacific Ocean. We could expect an ≥M6.5 earthquake.

The Japan Weather Agency said it expected a tsunami of 1 meter (3.28 feet) to reach large coastal areas starting around 0100 GMT.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued a warning of "hazardous tsunami waves" within the next three hours along some coasts of Russia and Japan.
