The Los Angeles area was jolted by a shallow earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey reported. Twitter has been swept by an avalanche of reactions from those in the area during the quake.

A 3.2 magnitude rumble reportedly occurred Friday morning at 1:25 a.m. Pacific time (9:45 a.m. GMT) at a depth of 7.5 miles (12 kilometers).

Its epicenter was near the West Athens community in South Los Angeles.

Over the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby, according to Los Angeles Times.

​Shallow tremors are not unusual in the area, and for many they are a reminder of a deadly quake that hit Los Angeles in January 1994.

​A 3.6 magnitude earthquake was also reported on Thursday near Anza, California, some 140 miles from Los Angeles.

Powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake close to Iraq-Iran border leaves 'at least six dead'

At least six people have been killed in Iran, according to state media, after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Iraq, near to the Iraq-Iran border.

Faramarz Akbari, Ghasr-e Shirin's governor, said that six people had died and scores more injured, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

The US Geological Survey said the epicentre was about 20 miles (32km) southwest of the city of Halabjah and measured 7.2. Over the border in Iran, the country's seismological centre said a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit Azgaleh.

Iranian state television that the earthquake had been felt in a number of cities in the country and had damaged eight villages, including knocking out electricity in a number of those villages.

The semi-official Iranian ILNA news agency reported that at least 14 provinces had been impacted earthquake.

Iranian social media was abuzz with posts of people evacuating their homes, especially from the cities of Ghasr-e Shirin - near the Iraqi border - and Kermanshah.

Esmail Najar, head of Iran's National Disaster Management Organization, said “some injured people might be buried under the rubble in Ghasr-e Shirin”.

Iran is prone to near daily quakes as it sits on many major fault lines. In 2003, a 6.6 magnitude flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. Many houses in rural parts of the province are made of mud bricks, which have been known to crumble easily in quake-prone Iran.

“The quake was felt in several Iranian provinces bordering Iraq ... Eight villages were damaged ... Electricity has been cut in some villages and rescue teams have been dispatched to those areas,” state TV reported.

Water and electricity lines were severed in some villages and cities in the Western Kermanshah province and communities stayed out on the streets because of the threat from aftershocks, a local Red Crescent official told state TV. “So far no casualties have been reported,” the official said.

The USGS issued an “orange” alert for “shaking-related fatalities and economic losses.” Iranian provinces in the northwestern, western and central areas of the country were impacted.

Magnitude 5.8 Quake Hits East Coast of Japan - Reports

According to the US Geological Service, a magnitude 5.8 quake hit off the east coast of Japan on Monday. The epicenter was recorded some 218 miles (351) km east of the Japan's Sendai, Honshu coast at the depth of nearly 5.9 miles (9.5).

Meantime, the Japanese Meteorological Agency have reported the quake's magnitude was 5.7 and it struck at a depth of about 10 km. The agency added that the quake was not severe enough to cause or affect any destruction on the land.

One of the biggest quakes of the year, a mag 7.3 has struck - 32km SSW of Halabjah, on the Iraq, Iran border impacting some of Iran's key nuclear sites and millions of people living in the area.

Three research reactors and two nuclear sites are in the USGS shake area, see map above.
It is not known if any damage has been reported at this time, the sites include, Arak - Heavy water reactor and production plant.

The existence of a heavy-water facility near the town of Arak first emerged with the publication of satellite images by the US-based Institute for Science and International Security in December 2002. Spent fuel from a heavy-water reactor contains plutonium suitable for a nuclear bomb.

The quake comes during much tension in Iran with the U.S. over their nuclear deal and a possible war developing between Iran and the Saudis.

Today's quake is the 8th major quake of November and is the 94th major quake of a very quiet 2017 as this year promises to be the lowest total of major quakes this century.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that has struck Iraq's northeast near the Iranian border continues to rise in Iran.

Iranian officials say the temblor has left at least 141 people dead in the country's western provinces. Hundreds of other Iranians have sustained injuries. Meanwhile, rescue teams have stepped up efforts to find those trapped under rubble. Iraqi officials also said the earthquake had killed six people inside the country and wounded 150 others.

The U-S Geological Survey said the quake was centered 32 kilometers southwest of Halabja in Sulaymaniyah province. It said the quake was a magnitude seven-point-three on the Richter scale. It has also been felt in Azerbaijan, Turkey and Kuwait.

The death toll in an earthquake that struck western Iran near the border with Iraq has increased to 328, the region’s medical service said Monday.

On Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) issued a statement about a 7.2-magnitude quake that hit Iran-Iraq border region at a depth of 12 miles, 132 miles northeast of Iraqi capital city of Baghdad, causing serious damage to the region.

Earlier in the day, head of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pir Hossein Kolivand said that the number of those injured in an earthquake in western Iran has increased to 2,500.

The Red Crescent reported that about 70,000 Iranians were left without homes, the organization is opening tent camps on the site of the earthquake. The authorities of the country are taking all necessary measures to provide assistance to the victims.

A three-day mourning period was declared in the Iranian province of Kermanshah. It is assumed that the number of victims will grow.

A number of regions in province are not accessible by road, — the earthquake has caused landslides that have damaged roads.

In addition to Iran, Iraq suffered from the earthquake — the most damage was recorded in the city of Darbandikhan.

The Russian Embassy in Tehran said it did not receive any information about Russian nationals injured as a result of the earthquake, adding that the Russian diplomatic missions in the disaster area had not been damaged.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed condolences to his Iranian and Iraqi counterparts, Hassan Rouhani and Fuad Masum, respectively.

An earthquake measuring 7.3 occurred on the border between Iran and Iraq on Sunday. Underground shocks were recorded 204 kilometers to the north-east of Baghdad and 104 kilometers to the west of the Iranian city of Kermanshah.

The number of those injured in an earthquake in western Iran has increased to 2,500, Head of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Pir Hossein Kolivand said on Monday.

According to him, 210 people were killed.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that a magnitude 6.8 quake occurred on Sunday night off the coastal area of Costa Rica's Parrita canton.

According to USGS, a strong quake has struck southwest off the coast of Costa Rica hours after the disastrous tremor hit the border area between Iran and Iraq.

The USGS has recorded the epicenter nearly 44 miles (71 km) southwest of San Jose at an approximate depth of 6.2 miles (10 km).

Local authorities have not issued any report on the possible impact of the quake.

Earlier on in the day, another seismic epicenter was registered some 218 miles (251km) east off the Japan's coastal area.

ISTANBUL: An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 hit southwest Turkey at 2022 GMT on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was 31 km (20 miles) southeast of Mugla province, a popular tourist region on the Aegean Sea, at a depth of 10 km, the USGS said.

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Iran on Friday, weeks after a devastating quake claims more than 500 lives, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The shallow-quake was registered at 02:32 UTC. Its epicenter lied 65 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Kerman, populated by over 500,000, and some 489 kilometers (303 miles) east of Shiraz, which has a population of 1.2 million.

The agencies also registered a 5.0-magnitude aftershock in the same area minutes later.
