Earthquakes around the world

Five successive earthquakes, all measuring above 5 on the Richter scale, struck Iran’s western provinces of Kermanshah and Ilam on Thursday, nearly two months after a massive temblor killed over 600 people in Kermanshah and displaced thousands of others.

Since Thursday morning, nine quakes have shaken Iran’s western regions near the common border with Iraq, including four measuring lower than 4 on the Richter scale.

The consecutive temblors hit near the cities of Soumar and Gilan-e-Gharb in the province of Kermanshah and the city of Zarneh in Ilam province.

On November 12, a 7.3-magnitude quake hit Kermanshah, killing more than 620 people and injuring around 10,000 others, mainly in the city of Sarpol-e Zahab and the nearby villages.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major fault lines that cover at least 90% of the country.

The deadliest quake in Iran’s modern history happened in June 1990, devastating many areas in the northern province of Gilan and killing around 37,000 people.

In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake in the province of Kerman flattened the historic city of Bam, killing more than 26,000 people.

The quake hit offshore at 4:18 a.m. local time (0918 GMT) at a depth of around 36 km (22.4 miles), the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. Its epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean 40 km from the town of Acari.

Arequipa Governor Yamila Osorio said on Twitter that one 55-year old man died in the town of Yauca after being crushed by rock. Jorge Chavez, chief of Peru’s Civil Defense Institute (INDECI), told local radio station RPP that a second death was reported in the town of Bella Union.

INDECI said on Twitter that 65 people were injured. “There are several homes affected and it is possible that the count of victims and injured will rise,” Chavez said.

Several municipalities were without electricity, and many roads and adobe houses had collapsed, Osorio said. Many residents of Lomas, a coastal town, were evacuated after feeling an aftershock, she said.

MADINAH, Saudi Arabia: The Holy City of Madinah experienced a 2.5 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, engineer Hani Zahran of the Saudi Geological Society told Arab News. City officials confirmed that there were no reports of damage from the earthquake.

The center of the earthquake was 14km north-west of Madinah at a depth of 7 kilometers below the surface.

Col. Khaled Al-Johani, spokesman of the Civil Defense in the city, said they had received a call around 3pm with residents in the townships west of Madinah having felt a tremor.

Tariq Aba Al-Khail, a spokesman for the General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection, said that the tremor was "weak and not dangerous", noting that small tremors occur often in the Kingdom.

Brig. Gen. Abdulrahman Al-Harbi, director of civil fed defense department ordered specialists from civil defense and the Saudi Geological Survey to issue the necessary reports.

Comment: 2.5 is low on the scale but for the Muslim's in Saudi Arabia, they take earthquakes seriously. In their the holy Quran is this passage:

Hadith 3:105 (Sahih al-Bukhari )
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, "There will be no town which Ad-Dajjal will not enter except Mecca and Medina, and there will be no entrance (road) (of both Mecca and Medina) but the angels will be standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Medina will shake with its inhabitants thrice (i.e. three earth-quakes will take place) and Allah will expel all the nonbelievers and the hypocrites from it."

I don't know how significant that is, but the above earthquake is one of several big ones in that last couple of weeks, that were all at the same depth of 10 Kilometers (pretty close to the surface) and about the same area (middle america) just below the USA:

- 9. January: Strong earthquake hits Honduras 10 Kilometers below the surface with a magnitude of 7.8
- 14. January: Strong earthquake hits Peru 10 Kilometers below the surface with a magnitude of 7.3

Something significant going on in the tectonic plates around and under america?

"The Whole Town Is Evacuating" - Tsunami Headed For Alaska After 8.2 Magnitude Earthquake

powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake detected in the Gulf of Alaska has triggered tsunami warnings in Alaska and tsunami watches across several Western states through British Columbia all the way down to San Diego...

Earthquake watches are also in effect for Hawaii

“Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The earthquake struck about 175 miles southeast of Kodiak, Alaska, shortly after midnight in Alaska local time, according to preliminary figures from the United States Geological Survey. The quake had a depth of about 6 miles, according to USGS. That depth, meteorologists pointed out, is relatively shallow, raising the risk of dangerous tsunamis in Alaska.

Map

In Kodiak, first responders drove through the streets warning residents to "evacuate immediately"...

Tsunami waves move surprisingly quickly, one meteorologist said, point to the following graphic.

The U.S. Geologic Survey gave a preliminary magnitude of 7.9, while the National Weather Service put the final magnitude at 8.2.

Warning

In its warnings, USGS stated: "If you are in a tsunami warning area: Evacuate inland or to higher ground above and beyond designated tsunami hazard zones or move to an upper floor of a multi-story building depending on your situation.

"If you are in a tsunami watch area: Prepare to take action and stay alert for further information."

"If you’re on the beach and the tide suddenly goes out, head inland immediately."

Nathaniel Moore was on a boat docked in Kodiak when he felt the ground "shake really good for a minute." He said the fishing vessel's crew got off the boat after the earthquake to head for higher ground amid the tsunami warning.

"The whole town is evacuating," he told CNN early Tuesday.

Heather Rand, who was in Anchorage, Alaska, told CNN that the earthquake "was a slow roller, so it was felt for at least a minute before the real rolling started. Nothing fell off the walls and I didn't have to wake my kiddo."

She said it felt like the longest earthquake she had ever experienced.

"It was a very long, slow build up. Creepy, more than anything. Definitely the longest, and I was born here," Rand said. She reported no damage besides cracks in the drywall.

Waves should be reaching the Alaska shoreline in an hour or so, meteorologists said

The tsunami warnings were later on luckily cancelled again.

A tsunami warning for the coastal areas of B.C. has been cancelled following a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in Alaska.

The warning was issued early Tuesday, shortly after 1:30 a.m., and Emergency B.C. was warning anyone in affected areas to evacuate. However, at 4:30 a.m., an urgent message from Emergency Management B.C. stated that all warnings for coastal B.C. had been cancelled.

“No zones of coastal British Columbia are at risk. Repeat, no zones of coastal British Columbia are at risk,” said EMBC.

No damages or casualties were registered following the earthquake, which lasted about 30 seconds. No tsunami warning has been issued for Japan so far, according to media reports.

The quake occurred a day after massive 8.0 quake hit near Alaska causing tsunami warning for Canada and Alaska as well as tsunami watch for the parts of the US west coast and Hawaii.

Los Angeles hit by 4.0 magnitude earthquake, felt across S. California
https://www.rt.com/news/416945-quake-los-angeles-california/

The initial quake was followed soon after by a 2.2 aftershock.

The earthquake comes just days after the western seaboard of the US was placed on high alert following a magnitude 7.9 earthquake offshore Alaska. Tsunami advisories were also posted in Hawaii but there were no reports of significant waves causing any damage, injury or loss of life in either region of the US.

Scientists have warned that the Earth may experience a far higher number of major earthquakes than normal owing to a slight change in the Earth’s rotation.
