WORLDWIDE EARTHQUAKE REPORT JULY 17_2024

Low levels of seismic activity have occurred in the last 48 hours. The following are the highest magnitude earthquakes all of them occurred on July 16

● M 5.2 - Izu Islands, Japan region/ 06:36:43 (UTC)/ 10.0 km depth/ USGS
● M 5.0 - 55 km NNE of Isangel, Vanuatu/ 12:29:44 (UTC)/ 273.8 km depth/ USGS
● M 5.0 - 10 km NNE of Tataltepec de Valdés, Mexico/14:29:15 (UTC)/12.6 km depth/SSN
● M 5.4 - 109 km ESE of Bitung, Indonesia/ 23:39:28 (UTC)/10.0 km depth/ USGS

So we have 24 hours without a magnitude 5+ earthquake. Seismic silence for M5+ is usually a precursor to a larger event. In addition, on July 16 we had an X2 class solar flare which had an impact in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean and an Interplanetary Magnetic Field of 16nT at 05:26 UTC.

As expected a significant event occurred after seismic silence. A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit 107 km away from Calama, Antofagasta, Chile. The quake was felt by over 4.2 million people across 3 countries: Argentina (2 million), Bolivia (1.1 million), and Chile (1 million) according to USGS data, which also issued a Yellow (moderate) alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. For this strong earthquake, 5 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 5.0 quake that hit 25 minutes after the mainshock. The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 8.2. It occurred 74 years ago.

In the past 24 hours, there were 895 quakes of magnitudes up to 7.3:
  • 1 quake above magnitude 7
  • 5 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
  • 30 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
  • 93 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
  • 213 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
  • 553 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

The energy of the M7.3 earthquake will move into northern South America, Central America and the west coast of Mexico and the United States with a worst-case M6+ earthquake. Significant seismic activity is also expected in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, PNG Tonga, Fiji, Kermadec Islands). Let's wait for the SSGEOS report next week to know the planetary and lunar alignments that may influence seismic activity.

An interesting report related to the M7.4 earthquake in San Pedro Atacama Chile reports that an M8.8 event could occur in the region, due to a seismic swarm that has occurred since Monday. This is the area of Mina Collahuasi, located in the Tarapacá Region, which has registered more than seven earthquakes, all between 2.7 and 3.8. All the earthquakes have been intra-plate.

The last great earthquake was a century ago: scientists warn of "seismic swarm" in northern Chile

The zone has not released the corresponding seismic energy since the Vallenar earthquake in 1922. According to the National Seismological Center, the Collahuasi Mine, Pica, Antofagasta, Ollagüe and Sierra Gorda, all within the zone in question, have shown telluric activity in recent days.

Pablo Salucci, geographer of the Catholic University and academic and researcher at Duoc UC, points out that a good part of the observed earthquakes are of the intraplate type, that is, "they occur inside the South American plate as a consequence of the thrust of the Nazca plate at great depth".

"It is always important to observe these earthquakes, since we are in an area that has not 'broken' for more than a century, and a large earthquake of the interplate type is expected, which would also generate an important tsunami", adds Salucci.

Salucci states that this type of seismological situation is known as "seismic GAP". "It is a zone that has not been 'broken' for quite some time, precisely since the Atacama earthquake in 1922″.

"Particularly the danger is associated with the fact that the use of the coast in the area has increased significantly. While there is a condition of vulnerability, given that much time has passed since the last earthquake, today we have a lot of occupation, so there is a greater number of people exposed to an earthquake and/or tsunami, increasing the risk, adds the academic.

Although this seismic swarm does not necessarily imply that a large earthquake will occur, they are signs that seismologists, geologists and geographers take into account as a possible harbinger of the arrival of an eventual telluric event in a country like Chile.

Salucci points out that essentially due to the time that has passed, "a large magnitude event is projected, which has been evaluated to exceed a magnitude of 8.8".

The characteristics of this possible great earthquake generate concern, since it could be very close to the great Valdivia earthquake of 1960, which reached M9.5 considered the most powerful earthquake in history since records have been kept.

In the past 24 hours, there were 934 quakes of magnitudes up to 7.3:

●1 quake above magnitude 7
●1 quake between magnitude 6 and 7
●5 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
●37 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
●105 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
●235 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
●550 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

The energy of the M7.3 earthquake will move into northern South America, Central America and the west coast of Mexico and the United States with a worst-case M6+ earthquake.

As expected, the energy from the M7.4 (updated) earthquake in Chile found an outlet in Central America. A very strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit 9.2 km away from Jalapa, Jalapa, Guatemala. According to preliminary estimates from USGS, the quake might have been felt by over 24.5 million people across 5 countries: Guatemala (16.6 million), El Salvador (5.9 million), Honduras (1.9 million), Mexico (91,000) and Belize (21,000). So far, no human or material damages have been reported. USGS issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses related to the earthquake. No aftershocks have been recorded so far.

In the past 24 hours, there were 858 quakes of magnitudes up to 6.2:

●1 quake above magnitude 6
●2 quakes between magnitude 5 and 6
●31 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5
●113 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4
●246 quakes between magnitude 2 and 3
●465 quakes below magnitude 2 that people normally don't feel.

Summit and Upper Rift Zone Observations:  Over the past 24 hours, there were approximately 67 earthquakes detected beneath Kīlauea’s summit and approximately 172 earthquakes detected beneath the upper East Rift Zone, mostly at depths of 0–2 km (0.0–1.2 mi) beneath the ground surface. An increase in earthquake counts was observed beneath the summit and the upper East Rift Zone compared to the previous day (during which there were approximately 17 events detected beneath the summit, and approximately 61 events detected beneath the upper East Rift Zone). All earthquake counts are well below the counts recorded during the June 27–July 1 upper East Rift Zone swarm. In the upper East Rift Zone region, there were three seismic events larger than M3 with one earthquake being M3.5. All seismic events were smaller than M3 earthquakes in the summit region. Tiltmeters in Kīlauea summit region (instruments SDH, southwest of the summit, and UWE, northwest of the summit) show gradual inflationary ground deformation over the past day. GPS instruments around the summit region continue to show longer-term, gradual inflation since the end of the June 3, 2024, eruption. The most recent measurement of the summit’s SO2 emission rate was approximately 100 tonnes per day on July 17, 2024.
