ANKARA, Turkey -- A moderately strong earthquake hit southeast Turkey on Thursday, causing damage to some homes. There were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The 5.4-magnitude quake struck the town of Ozalp, in Van province, near Turkey’s border with Iran, at a depth of 6.9 kilometers (4.3 miles), Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said.

It was felt in neighboring provinces, HaberTurk news channel reported.

Gov. Mehmet Emin Bilmez said the quake knocked down parts of a house in a village near Ozalp and damaged some homes in the town.

“Apart from that, we have no loss of lives,” he said.

Turkey is crossed by two major fault lines, and earthquakes are frequent. Turkey’s worst quake in decades was in 1999, when a pair of strong earthquakes struck in the northwest, killing around 18,000 people.

Interesting comment about the lack of M7 earthquakes from forecaster Ditrianum on his most recent Youtube video - some notes i made from the 4 minute video are below, those of particular interest are in blue:

- Even with 'critical' planetary alignments earthquake activity is low, and if we look at the last 12 months of M7 quakes we should have had 12-15, 18 if earth is more active, but we only count 7, and most of them occurred last year, if we look at the last 6 months we've only had 2 which is really below average.
The last week saw a 7.4 earthquake north of New Zealand as mentioned by other.
3 of 110 equal or greater to 4.5 happened in the usual map area and 3431 out of 3904 earthquakes worldwide. Keep in mind that this is as mentioned before according to USGS, so all the small earthquakes in Iceland as listed by Haiku above, for example are not counted by USGS.
Percentage: 87.9%
Ditrianum as itellsya mentioned, said that there had only been 2 M7 earthquakes in the last 6 months, but that it was likely to change in June.
This last week there was a 7.4 quake in Mexico, which then makes it 2 M7 in two weeks. There were 5 earthquakes equal or greater to 4.5 in the usual map area and 3426 out of 3939 earthquakes of all sizes.

2 tremors shake Puerto Rico, latest in series of quakes
By DÁNICA COTO - 2020-07-03
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Two strong earthquakes shook Puerto Rico on Friday, but there were no reports of injuries in the latest of a series of tremors that have hit the U.S. territory since late December.

A tremor with magnitude-5.3 hit just southwest of the island in the afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey said, revising its power down from an initial measurement of 5.5. It came just a few hours after a magnitude-4.9 shake hit in the same region, causing small landslides and collapsing an abandoned home weakened by the earlier quakes.

Both shakes were felt across Puerto Rico, which has experienced a series of earthquakes this year that have damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes. People in several offices in the capital of San Juan and elsewhere evacuated out of caution.
