Iodine and Potassium Iodide

This book finally arrived today (three weeks for delivery!)

Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It
by David Brownstein

Much more comprehensive than "The Iodine Crisis" And a must read.

I'm compiling a document on the topic that should be finished soon so if anyone wants it, send me a pm with email addy.

So, here's the scoop.

There are serious reasons to believe that about everybody is not just deficient in iodine, but loaded with bromides and perchlorates etc. The endocrine system, by itself, needs about 12 mg per day of iodine to function. That does NOT take into account the iodine having to detox bromides, fluorides, metals, etc. In order to be reasonably functional and detoxed, you almost HAVE to take 50 or so mg per day. That is for an average sized person. Since fat cells also take in iodine, if you are overweight, you have to increase the daily amount just for functionality!!! However, if you achieve saturation, and take the cofactors, your ATP and mtDNA will start working right and you will probably lose weight, excluding any permanent damage.

There are serious and important reasons for taking the co-factors and salt. Really serious. Some people without much damage or serious conditions do fine with just getting the iodine and salt and a good, natural diet, but those with conditions definitely will need the cofactors. Book explains in detail, so just take my word for it now.

Lugols is the best form of iodine. The count is total, KI and iodine added. So 50 mg is KI and iodine added together in the form it comes in Lugol's. About 8-10 drops of the 5% is a normal dose per day. If you have the 12% 5 drops is about right. And that is if you are a normal sized person. Increase this accordingly if you are heavier.

******************
For conditions like autoimmune things, chronic fatigue, disease states of all sorts, etc 75 to 100 mg per day that can be taken in two doses. That would be 15 to 20 drops of 5% lugols per day. 7 to 10 drops per dose. Half that many drops for 12%. Again, if you are overweight, increase accordingly. You can include KI pills at the beginning to help your skin/fat get saturated faster. The 130s for heavier people and the 30s or so for regular sized people.

The conditions are where the cofactors are SUPER important. They are:

200 mg of B2 (riboflavin) per day. Can be taken in two doses with your lugols.
1000 mg of B3 (niacinamide) taken in two doses with lugols.
200mcg selenium (not more!) ONCE a day. with morning dose
3 to 10 grams of vitamin C - divide into two doses taken an hour after lugols.
You can take your teaspoon of sea salt in two doses also. 1/2 tsp in a glass of water per dose.
500 mg of magnesium - glycinate is excellent - taken at night.
******************

That's it. It really is simple. Don't double your co-factors for weight like you would the lugols.

Do this heavy duty protocol for 6 weeks to 3 months and then try dropping down to normal dose. If you have a recurrence, increase again incrementally until you find the right dose. Some people normalize quickly and others take a long time.

For higher doses, lugols is cheaper. You can also make it.

10% potassium iodide crystals
5% elemental iodine
85% water

There are youtube videos that show how to make it.

So those are my notes from the book.

My experience with iodine so far:

I was on around 25 - 50mg per day for about 18 months, but stopped that around a year ago (not sure why). I started to feel progressively more tired, put on weight and just felt "under the weather". Sure, I had plenty of stuff going on in my life (split up, moving, feeling isolated, working a lot etc.), to which I attributed my symptoms. I started iodine again about 3 weeks ago, something between 50 and 100mg (not very scientific, I know). My energy levels bounced back to normal - and more! Only side-effects I noticed is occasionally a runny nose. I have not taken co-factors consistently, salt water being the exception.

So, I'm sold too!
:)

Great news to hear everyones positive results :D

I have only been taking lugols for three days. Started off on a lower dose (around 12.5mg) and have gradually increased it to now around 70 mg. No negative effects so far whatsoever, so I am assuming my dose has not been high enough.

Taking it in conjunction with Ascorbic acid (4-5g), selenomethionine(200mcg), glycine (2-3 teaspoons), potassium citrate (100mg), magnesium glycinate (600-900mg) and plenty of salt. Waiting for additional B vits to arrive in the post on friday.

The past few days (especially today) I have had heaps of energy straight after taking the iodine. I plan to continue upping the dose gradually, because from what I have read 50-100mg is only reccomended as a maintenance dose by some people, and to really sort the system out may require a few hundred mgs or even gs!

Thanks for the extra info from the book Laura. Do you have any ideas as to why Brownstein recommends non-flush (niacinamide) instead of standard niacin (nicitonic acid)?

Because earlier on in the thread Gaby posted a protocol by Guy Abraham, David Brownstein and Jorge Flechas which specifically states NOT to use niacinamide.
- 50mg Iodoral minimum (may start with 12.5mg).
- Some recommend lugol's solution. Iodoral is the lugol's formula in tablet form especially designed to avoid gastric irritation.
- Vitamin C 3 grams per day (more may be necessary to detox bromide).
- 300-600mg magnesium.
- 200mcg selenium or selenomethionine.
- 500mg niacin (B3) twice a day (NOT niacinamide). Start lower to avoid flush. 100mg vitamin B2 three times a day. ATP cofactors may be used as an alternative.
- 1/2 teaspoon unprocessed sea salt added to diet
- 1/4 teaspoon unprocessed salt in 8 oz. water twice a day as needed.
- A comprehensive vitamin and nutrition program.
- (February 2008) Dr. Guy Abraham cautions that "excess calcium supplementation (2000-3000mg/day) has been the most common cause of poor response to iodine supplementation". Vitamin Research news Vol. 22. Number 2.
- Protocol Update 2009: Data gathered from the Breast Cancer Choices Iodine Investigation Project participants reports that the ATP Cofactors helps iodine absorption and normalize TSH levels.
He says niacinimide in the book. I can't handle 100 mg of niacin so I'm sticking with the no flush stuff. Can't imagine 1K mg of niacin!

Yeah I was very surprised at the 1000mg niacin recommendation. I feel like I have sunburn after a regular dose of niacin if it's regular nicotinic acid.

Thanks for the notes, I look forward to reading the book.

I've cleaned up the dosing thing a bit to simplify it.

LUGOL’S Dosing using 12% (if using 5%, double)
Normal weight person, no sickness: 5 drops per day.
Normal weight person, sick: 7 to 10 drops divided into 2 doses
If infection or virus attack, 7 to 10 drops 2X per day
Overweight person, not sick, 7 to 10 drops per day
Overweight person, sick 15 to 20 drops per day in divided dose
Overweight person, infection or virus attack, 7 to 10 drops 3X per day

COFACTORS:
200 mg of B2 (riboflavin) per day. Can be taken in two doses with your lugols.
1000 mg of B3 (niacinamide) taken in two doses with lugols.
200mcg selenium (not more!) ONCE a day. with morning dose
3 to 10 grams of vitamin C - divide into two doses taken an hour after lugols.
Sea salt ¼ to 1/2 tsp in a glass of water 2 X per day.
500 mg of magnesium - glycinate is excellent - taken at night.

Eat a low carb, no gluten or dairy diet; plenty of good fats; and take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement.

I think pets should also benefit from iodine supplementation especially if not fed processed food which usually has added iodine.
I need to look into this more, and perhaps devise protocol.

The general recommendation is:
"Dogs should receive 0.7 mg of iodine daily for every pound of dog food they eat (on a dry matter basis)."

Well, the local health food store has a 14% potassium iodide with iodine for $10. I bought a large bottle and immediately had two drops. That was so positive that I had three more, an hour later with sea salt water.

I talked to my ex in Alberta, told her about it and told her to get on it. She phoned the local health food store to inquire about it. They told her that iodine products have been flying off the shelves for the past couple of weeks. It seems like you/we have a fairly large circle of influence.
This is very good news.

The protocol which I quoted was from a conference in 2007 and I assumed that was the latest as it was quoted in a 2015 book.

Dr. Brownstein's book, at least the 4th edition, is from 2009. So it seems niacinamide should be the updated version.

What is best tolerated sounds more reasonable.

Actually, the 5th edition is out (2014) and much more cheaper than the amazon versions:

I have the 5th edition.

I was reading up on niacin and niacinimide last night and it does sound like it must be the niacinimide that is intended. After all, like I said, it already comes in 500mg capsules so taking 1 gram of it is only a matter of 2 capsules while taking that much niacin is difficult at best. However, I think I'll add one 50mg capsule of niacin which isn't enough to make me flush and itch.

One thing I notice, the treatment protocols are pretty much the same as he recounts case after case, but not everyone, apparently, needs the cofactors. If the lugols alone, with a general multi-vite and multi-mineral does the trick for someone, that's probably all they need. You really have to read the different cases, the problems that come up and how he solved them (like the cofactor thing for people with damaged energy systems) to get a real feel for the flexibility of things.

Also notice that the protocol in general is very safe and doesn't stress the body very much. Those people who have things like detox/herx reactions only need to remember the salt water and maybe add the cofactors.

A few words here that came out of our discussion this morning.

As noted, the co-factors seem to be necessary only for those individuals with severe energy problems so not everyone needs to take them. A good B vitamin is probably okay.

We decided that the best way to remember to take the salt, which is necessary for EVERYONE, is just to take it first thing in the morning upon arising. Make it a habit to have a glass of salted water when you get up and that part is done. Then, if you are not suffering from a serious condition, you only need to take your right dose of lugols and that's it.

Data took five drops this morning and said he thought that was one drop too much for him, so he'll be dropping back to 4 drops. Every person will need to figure out the right dose for their own body/condition. The good thing is, a little extra won't hurt you and you can play with the dosing until you find what works exactly right for you.

Perlou, if you start taking the glycine which is supposed to reverse damage done by a high carb diet and tone and condition the cardiovascular system, you will also need to take NAC with it, prolly a 500 mg with each dose.
