Japan - 8.9 Earthquake - Fukushima Meltdown

Hmmm....

(Dow Jones) - Giant polyester covers will soon be placed around the damaged reactor buildings at Japan's Fukushima nuclear complex to help contain the release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere, the plant operator said Friday.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) will install the first cover at the No. 1 reactor, the focus of recent stabilization efforts, starting next month.

Workers will erect a steel framework and place a giant polyester tent-like cover around the reactor building. Similar covers will be placed around units No. 3 and 4. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.[...]

Is it that bad? :scared:
I mean, too late to bother with concrete, lead and such, so let's make a show and wrap this crap in polyester? Like a huge circus? By the end of the year? So they are simply unable to stop the leak and will never be, right? What am I missing?

That's correct.

I don't think that will happen, Japan and its population will recover from this disaster, and so the world.

I don't think it's only this radioactive issue from Japan or even form Chernobyl, but there is cumulative problem with over 2000 A-bombd and H-bombs explosion in last 50 years as nicely presented here: http://www.sott.net/articles/show/226999

Japan is just a last drop, we are all in big trouble, for decades.... :cool2:

I see....so now basically a rain poncho can protect us from radiation?

I'm reminded of when we were in elementary school and were instructed to hide under our desks if an atomic bomb went off. Tommy turtle would dance to "Duck and Cover" Who knew we were supposed to put on our rain slickers first? The advancement in personal protection in case of radiation exposure is just amazing. :wow:

You are misunderstanding. They will never be able to stop the leak - not really. They can 'cover it up' or encase it, but underneath all that, the emission continues. Regarding Japan 'recovering' - if you set your timescale to hundreds of years, then sure. The Chernobyl area has yet to recover and won't for a very long time. It also depends on what you mean by 'recover'. Considering mutations in the population, you're talking a multi-generational time scale. This isn't an oil spill, it's radiation.

By recover I meant adapting to new scenarios. But if they build a tent wouldn't that be enough to mitigate the leak to a minimun?? Sorry for misunderstanding, I've been confusing stuff and misinterpreting also, I don't know what's up with me.

From Rt News: Fukushima Effect: Japan nuclear zone expands. A freight train rolling down hill, at full throttle, and already having jumped the track's. If they continue to keep pushing back, the population will be out to sea.

To a large extent, the Chernobyl area has recovered remarkably well. Wildlife is doing very well there. However, as you say, it depends on what you mean by "recover".

You know Pagan, the place is still pretty hot, and a ghost town. It will never be the same again, in this life time.

Maybe those plant have the key to overcome radiation!! They should be studied!

But would you eat any of those plants or animals? I sure wouldn't!

LOL obviously NOO, but it's possible that those plant and animals have develop something that aloud them to live and born there. That genome or whatever it may be, could be extracted and recreated into a medicine to treat radiation exposure, we have to search for solutions anywhere.
