Cult Information Specialist/Thought Reform Consultant engages in consultation, education, research and non-coercive intervention regarding controversial, high demand groups, cults, psychotherapies, or relationships that use thought reform and mind control techniques.
As an artist he continues to produce and exhibit paintings, drawings and prints. Szimhart is a member of the Perkiomen Valley Art Center in Pennsylvania.
In 1998, Szimhart accepted a full-time position as a "Mental Health Professional" with a psychiatric emergency hospital that treats adults with mental illness and addictions on a short-term basis. He mostly staffs a new "crisis residential program" of MCES that treats patients in a non-hospital setting. He continues to consult on cult-related situations and to conduct interventions.

Joe Szimhart’s deep interest in the problem of harmful cult activity began in 1980 when he rejected the influence of a system of esoteric sects, some of which used thought reform techniques. He began helping persons with similar adjustment problems by the end of 1980. His professional career began in 1986 when he first worked with intervention specialists (deprogrammers and exit counselors) nationally. Szimhart was chairman of a Christian based cult and occult information group in Santa Fe, NM from 1985-92. His continuing education in the field comes from extensive research, experience, conferences and workshops.
Szimhart has appeared in court as a witness on behalf of cult victims four times and has defended himself successfully against civil and criminal charges connected to his work with victims.
He has personally helped many hundreds of people impacted by a wide spectrum of cult activity.
He has lectured widely at colleges, prep schools, high schools, Native American tribal centers, and conferences about the dangers of groups that use thought reform and mind control. Szimhart has also delivered papers for the Association of Sociology of Religion in 1996 & 1997. One of his papers is slated to appear in a forthcoming book edited by Professor B. Zablocki and sociologist T. Robbins.

Seeing someone's name used backwards isn't that unusual, since most listings are compiled by harvester bots...but it does make it interesting.

The MCES program that Szimhart works with has requested an "expansion" I guess going into people's homes and convincing families that their loved ones are "mentally ill" because they're free thinkers is a very lucrative business.
I wonder how many people have wound up being committed to MCES because Szimhart convinced (often elderly) parents that their child was a member of a "Cult" simply because they didn't choose mainstream spiritual beliefs?

MCES has responded to the Request for Proposal (RFP) for an expansion of Mobile Crisis Services, the development of a warm line (a peer run emergency phone line), and a new crisis residential program. It has been an experience developing this response where many staff members participated in the preparation. I want to mention Debbie Shanley, who offered to assist in this process by typing
and pulling it together. Our Board member, Faith Millen met with staff and helped us gain perspective
on how to respond to the RFP. She gave us feedback on the semi-final product so that we could
present our best proposal. My thanks to all involved.

What MCES and Szimhart are doing affects the Pagan and Heathen communities too, in a BIG way!
This is a State funded agency that's employed a rabid Catholic ego sack to decide what is, and is not, a cult.
Basically, if you don't perform rituals that involve mock cannibalism and S & M, swear absolute obedience to the Holy Father, and agree that your Priesthood should be allowed to bugger little boys with impunity .... you're in a cult. I'm also wondering if the erstwhile estranged wife of our forum member is involved with this MCES and Szimhart? There are a few things that suggest this might be the case and if we get evidence of that, we'll be including her name and place of employment in the lists above.
This just gets more bizarre by the minute...according to Szimhart, even folks who prefer to ride bicycles instead of owning cars are "cult" members.

That is downright ridiculous! Cripes, riding a bike is healthy and saves on gasoline and emissions. What a total jerk! I'm starting to think that he is worse than MIVILUDES. Well, they think organic farming is a cult so maybe not so much worse.
These groups really want people to be brainwashed into not thinking at all, but only to be mindless zombies that do as they are told.
