That is very interesting! Thanks for sharing, Angela. Didn't cross my mind that a ketogenic diet might be a cure for obstructive sleep apnea. Common wisdom says that wight loss is often improving symptoms of OSA - but in a month there wouldn't be enough weight loss to account for all this improvement, while I am sure that it certainly would contribute.

I know, we were shocked that it has made such a difference. He will still slightly snore sometimes, but it isn't the gasping labored snoring as before. He would actually stop breathing at times also.

He has only lost about 10 pounds so far, so I don't think that has been that big of a factor.

I wanted to add: this morning he told me he hasn't felt this good in years!!!

Just a note here in case it might help others. I was out of butter yesterday so all I used was lard. To me it has made a big difference: more mental clarity, increase in energy levels and is more filling, compared to butter or even a mix of butter and lard. I also remember Nora Gedgaudas mentioning how eating butter actually made her gain weight (due to sneaky inflammation), and after replacing it with (good quality) duck fat, she lost weight again.

I knew I'm sensitive to butter from past experiences, but I thought that perhaps that wouldn't be the case anymore. But it is, and I'm going to continue experimenting with just lard.

I've recently been having butter, too, on a daily basis (normal butter and goat butter). I'd been reacting to it before and was quite happy that for the first time I didn't seem to react to it anymore. However, what I've noticed is a certain craving for it, which points to still being sensitive to it, even though less sensitive than before, since the previous overt symptoms were gone. I further noted less mental clarity, as well as some weight gain. So thanks for bringing up your observations about it. I did somehow suspect I was a bit too wishfully thinking in terms of butter, since it tastes so good and I so much wanted to tolerate it. Well, so taking a break from it sounds like a good idea.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Angela, that's another amazing testimony to the benefits of keto. Thanks for sharing.

I seem to have an increase of mental capacity (including concentration and retention/memory) when I eat lots of butter and eggs. I usually eat about 130 grams of butter a day in addition to all the fat from the meat I eat. I did eliminate butter for several months a couple of years ago and then reintroduced it and didn't notice any negative reactions, so I consider myself lucky (I do only eat grass-fed butter, though). By the way, I've been in ketosis since around beginning of March, 2011. I've never felt hungry ever since. Seems I can go a real long time without getting hungry while in ketosis - I just eat because I have to, not because I feel hungry.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

Little question. More than a week ago I am with "the flu" after increasing my fat intake. Although I already feel some better, now I'm constipated. I'm taking L-Glutamine, L-carnitine and lots of water, but the problem persists. Perhaps it would help the black tea or another natural laxative?.

I just take magnesium citrate to solve that one. Dose depends on individual. You want movement, but not liquification. I start with 5 200 mg caplets before bed. If nothing happens by noon the next day, then I do 6 that night. I've had to go as high as 9 caplets to get action.

Laura:

The uncertainty of the hygiene of eggs is why I recommend cooking them at least up to a certain temperature... gentle. I don't eat raw eggs. And almost never eat the whites at all.

Does this mean I should quit with the mayonnaise -( that I can't make, get right consistency anyway!) :)

If you mess up the mayo and it begins to curdle or un-emulsify on you, save the mess. Then take another egg yolk and put in your vinegar or lemon juice and whisk it. Then pour your un-emulsified mess in slowly as if it were your oil and whisk it like normal. Start out slowly drop by drop and it should start to emulsify again. Then continue pouring bigger portions of it and whisking. This is how you save a failed-to-emulsify mayonnaise attempt.

I think there's always a risk when eating raw egg yolks. You can maybe pasteurize it by putting it in boiling water for a minute. Salmonella poisoning isn't too severe, unless the diarrhea dehydrates you excessively. Having some colloidal silver on hand may make you feel better too. With that, I don't wash or pasteurize my eggs, and don't really worry about getting sick on the yolks. FWIW.

On questions like this, i think it's invaluable to have 'real life' answers, thank you 3D Student. It's like when you chat to a farmer (rare these days) they tend to think people are way over the top with hygiene fears, but then they probably have a stronger immune system!

From my reading, eggs do come with a natural coating. And i just found this to explain:
"Eggs are laid with a natural antibiotic coating that is washed off when you clean it. This coating serves to protect the egg from disease. Commercial washing removes it and so raises the permeability of the shell. "

_http://www.chickenhop.com/info/about_eggs.html

I only learned this like last year so just incase anybody wasn't aware.

That said, you have to take into account the life of said egg as to whether it could be contaminated in anyway. From the discussion, it seems you can eat chicken eggs raw, provided the supplier takes good care of them. Perhaps the white protects the yoke from the shell and is more likely to be contaminated? However for some reason this is a bit more ambivalent towards ducks..

The blog post below, i believe has taken her stats from Dr Mercola.

_http://kellythekitchenkop.com/2010/01/are-raw-eggs-safe-to-eat-real-food-wednesday.html
The reality is that there is a 1-in-20,000 to 1-in-30,000 chance that any given conventional egg will be contaminated with Salmonella. You have a 1-in-1,000 chance of dying of accidental drowning and a 1-in-6500 chance of dying from a slip and fall. And since few cases of Salmonella actually involve death, I think this is a pretty unimportant concern. Unfortunately, we don’t have statistics on pastured or organic eggs, but I’m betting it’s lower since healthy chickens and healthy conditions are less likely to harbor the Salmonella bacteria.

What About Raw Egg Whites?

Raw egg whites contain an enzyme called avidin that acts as an anti-nutrient to bind biotin in the yolk. Also known as vitamin B7, biotin is instrumental in cell growth and the metabolism of fatty acids and amino acids, as well as blood sugar maintenance. Just like with most vitamins, it’s a bad idea to reduce their availability to the body.

According to Dr. Mercola:

The salmonella risk is increased when hens are raised in unsanitary conditions, which is extremely rare for small organic farms where the chickens are raised in clean, spacious coops, have access to sunlight, and forage for their natural food. Conventional eggs, making up the vast majority of eggs in typical grocery stores, have an increased risk for salmonella, which is why I advise against eating conventional eggs raw. One study by the British government found that 23 percent of farms with caged hens tested positive for salmonella, compared to just over 4 percent in organic flocks and 6.5 percent in free-range flocks.

I hasted to add, though i believe there must be a real possibility of the above, I am of the thinking, this Salmonella issue has been used as a tool for pasteurisation and monopolisation of farming and food, as they did with the other 'outbreaks' in the UK, ie. foot and mouth, mad cow etc..

I think the main thing is to use extra caution if using conventional factory farm eggs. We typically buy organic or local farmer eggs and never had an issue. Although many years ago I used to make protein shakes with conventional raw eggs and didn't get sick, but the risk is still higher. I think if you are able organic, or even better, eggs from your local farmer, that greatly reduces the risk.

If you do get some kind of food poisoning though, another really good item to keep on hand is activated charcoal. It works very well for many kinds of poison. You can get it in caps or powder and is readily available.

In my case, I got constipated for quite a while after going keto. Recently, I found the thing that helped my digestion going smoothly is to reduce fibre intake drastically. Maybe you could try that along with Laura's suggestion.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

It took a LONG time for my guts to start to get regular, even after going keto, and I'm just 20 years old. Do keep the fiber low, and have some sort of laxative on hand for the worst case scenario. I survived by taking close to the limit of potassium and magnesium. In my case it was a preexisting condition that was made much worse by not having enough information during the adaption period (I should have supplemented potassium). I only recently discovered I didn't need this anymore because we couldn't pay for more supplements and I was forced to stop taking them.

Boron supplementation seems to help me too.

Thank you, Laura. I'll buy that supplement. I had on hand some magnesium sulfate, but it is easy have liquification with that.

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

I'm glad your talking guts, so i don't have to be the one to bring it up! But to report, i am having similar issues - more loose stool than not - which i initially attributed solely to bad timing of my magnesium citrate supplement (i am sensitive to it) but i'm beginning to think - having just started - it's the beginning of my body adjusting. I'm taking enzymes and flora and generally keeping note of the action and i have no worries. I ate paleo before but i think the fat bomb has kicked my body into action!

Re: Ketogenic Diet - Path To Transformation?

I actually had a lot of problems with loose stools right before I started getting regular.

Ok, i've read the other responses and thank you. It seems then that focusing on the carb load and the reduction of it is not as important, maybe eating enough protein, even more of what you need may serve as replacement for the carbs you are taking out of the diet?

I am not sure if I know what you mean, but the idea is to replace the carbs with the fat. If you eat more protein than the 15% you will feel funny (maybe you do already).

I have had those symptoms of the adaptation to a keto diet, the one I hate the most is going to pee a lot. The dizzines I have, mmm I don't know if it's because I'm not having enough fat, or because my adrenals (though I don't know if it's adrenal fatigue, as the whole syndrome), this happens from 1 or 2 pm to 4 or 3 pm, after that period my body recharges again. The magnesium supplement has helped me to sleep better than anything else, I take magnesium before meditating as it helps me to relax.

It seems you are going through the "keto flu" which is quite common. Emmerich gives excellent advice for this, esp. taking Magnesium, Potassium and making sure you have enough Sodium aka Salt. Bone broth helps a lot here. Also make sure you have your 80% fat intake and drink a lot.

I never had this peeing thing, but Gaby wrote about it somewhere here. Apparently it stops after a few days. This flu really s*cks, but see it from the perspective that your body makes the shift from burning glucose to burning fat!

Wishing you all the best, M.T.
Hey thanks for the help. It seems I'm getting a good idea about what it has to be and what is not. I need to save some money for the keto books. So the dizzines is the flu type of symptoms, ok. Because I thought either was my sleep patterns or that I didn't have a breakfast. So I tried a breakfast. I began to eat a little square of butter and like 4 to 6 eggs xD ! And most than nothing, I can focus so good at college, but I then feel dizzy. I thought I was allergic to eggs, because after I ate them I had knee pain, but I noticed this happens when I eat pork too, I also get phlegm in my throat when I eat pork.

The ketogenic diet is not hard for me, I never liked milk, nor bread, nor veggies nor fruits, and my mother never forced me into. But what is hard to resist is the pasta I had the habit to eat since kid, and rice.

So my plan should be simple:
-Drink at least 5 liters of water (specially on days I do cardio)
-Eat meat and fat pretty much.
-Eat my butter and my lard.
-Drink lemons.
-Take magnesium, vit D and fish oils. Or maybe a multi mineral.

I have to admit, some days my skin looks movie type, it looks so good. Though I'm young, when I didn't have filters for my diet, my skin looked sort of damaged.
