The Top comments under the same video says it's fake

FAKE: The Door to Hell is a natural gas field in Derweze (also spelled Darvaza, meaning "gate"), Ahal Province, Turkmenistan.

Indeed, here is a thread about it: http://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php/topic,18388.0.html

It also looks like the person walking around the rim is barefoot, which would not be the case in Chelyabinsk, where the temperature is around minus 6 in the day and -15 at night. No snow around either, so I would agree that this is a hoax.

Found this source (in Russian) with about twenty videos and also quite some photographs of the damage done. Most interesting would be the over 1600 commentary contributions, I think, for those who can read Russian language at least.

Apparently it was the most watched channel in Russia that broadcasted the "Door to Hell" as the crater today:

_http://english.ruvr.ru/radio_broadcast/36172287/104948285.html

And some people posted photos and videos of the Derweze site and called it the Chelyabinsk impact crater. If you’re not familiar with Derweze, or “The Gate”, it’s a village with a nearby natural gas field, which was unsuccessfully drilled in the 1970s. Long story short, the operation ended up in an accident – the ground collapsed under the heavy mining equipment and storage tanks, exposing the vast caverns full of natural and quite poisonous methane gas. Apparently the on-site scientists decided that the best course of action would be to burn it. That’s right, just burn the gas off – it’s the safest way when other means of preventing its spread into the outlying region are not an option. With the expected period of burning being several days, the scientists’ calculations were proven to be wrong… by a few decades; yep, it’s still burning to this day. So now there’s this huge fiery crater in the middle of a desert called “Door to Hell” – look it up, it’s really amazing. And you know, a person not familiar with it can indeed believe it to be a meteor crater. So anyway, probably the culmination of the crazy morning was the afternoon news report aired on Russia’s Channel One, one of the most popular federal television channels here. Of course they talked about the meteor, reporting that it was sighted above Chelyabinsk and that hundreds of people were mildly injured – mostly by shards of glass. This is all true, of course. But then came the part which made the news report go viral. Then the anchor mentioned that the authorities have found the impact crater for the meteor… and guess what footage was used? Yeah, the Door to Hell. Basically Channel One showed the whole nation an internet spoof and said it was the real deal. Once they’ve realized their mistake, they’ve pulled the piece from the schedule and updated their website to remove the ridiculous mistake – but not before several internet users managed to share their recordings of this embarrassment. Welcome to the internet guys, the place where stories are blown out of proportion and nothing stays hidden.

Why do I have a feeling that it was not a mistake?

Channel One Russia is the biggest country-wide broadcaster with the largest audience in Russia and the CIS. Our production policy is all-round and responsive news broadcasting, creative and technological innovations in content programming, diversity and balance of content.
A wide range of news, documentary, and feature film productions, as well as entertainment programs attract a greater number of viewers each year.

It is not likely to be an Innocent mistake. Even if the media is apparently driven by shallow sensationalism, its effect is perception management. In order to manage the public inquiry about a subject, show them something more exciting/impressive, then when this second subject is shown to be fake or normal, then the level of interest for the first subject decreases too.

And I guess this specific region of Russia is not living its first MoFc events, far from there. Look at the Google map and the numerous of craters now full of water ... Looks like Carolina Bays:

Sorry MK Scarlett but your link doesn't work for me...

But clicking the photograph does...

Here is the link from that one: http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=761054CaptureGooglemapChelyabinsk.jpg

That was my thought too, when I looked at the area earlier today. The nuclear facilities about 70 odd kilometers away is also dotted with potholes all around. Makes you wonder. Here is a photo of the nuclear site, which could well have been the target if it had come 10 minutes later.

edit: 10 minutes later instead of 10 minutes earlier

This reminded me of the example Marc Bloch gave in 'The Historian's Craft' as when a journalist prepared an 'on the scene' report of an execution and published it the day after the execution was to take place. Only problem was, the execution didn't actually take place until 10 days later... Whether it was intentional or a 'mistake' out of ignorance, it just goes to show that journalists in general do the least amount of critical research.

Looks like one of those well-funded sites designed to take people in and help shape their ideas and opinions. In this case, however, they are right. I don't fault RT for mentioning the rumor, nevertheless.

Indeed, I also think it's a good thing they shared this rumor, even though I'm inclined to agree with Windmill Knight as it was probably not the case.
They wanted to start a rumor, they did, they're denying it now but who knows, maybe in a few days they'll 'officially' declare that it was them who shot it down to 'close the case'.

Just out of curiosity, if it had come in a few hours later, where might it have hit?

Based on the videos posted, I would say it was heading from a North Eastern direction towards South West.

Getting a closer look on Chelyabinsk on Google Earth, that area seems to have vast Carolina Bays-looking former impact sites.

Based on this, I would say I agree with Zadius Sky's first idea of it hitting Europe. Central or Eastern Europe.

Edit: As MK Scarlett pointed out. It's even more obvious on google earth - zoomed in - than on this image, there are only a few. the link doesn't work for me either though

:scared:

:jawdrop:

It's the first time I see such video.

The force of the explosion almost destroyed my earphones and ears. All I can say is that such force of nature is breathtaking. Nobody can "fight" this. And whether we like it or not it IS happening and it WILL get worst.

It is imperative that people become aware. I'm doing my best to inform my friends and family but you know, they just don't realize...

Mother of God...

That is NOT a meteorite crater. That's a burning pit somewhere like Afghanistan or Uzbekhistan, long known as "Hell's Doorway" or something like that.

Correcting myself: I was close. It's in Turkmenistan.
