And some people posted photos and videos of the Derweze site and called it the Chelyabinsk impact crater. If you’re not familiar with Derweze, or “The Gate”, it’s a village with a nearby natural gas field, which was unsuccessfully drilled in the 1970s. Long story short, the operation ended up in an accident – the ground collapsed under the heavy mining equipment and storage tanks, exposing the vast caverns full of natural and quite poisonous methane gas. Apparently the on-site scientists decided that the best course of action would be to burn it. That’s right, just burn the gas off – it’s the safest way when other means of preventing its spread into the outlying region are not an option. With the expected period of burning being several days, the scientists’ calculations were proven to be wrong… by a few decades; yep, it’s still burning to this day. So now there’s this huge fiery crater in the middle of a desert called “Door to Hell” – look it up, it’s really amazing. And you know, a person not familiar with it can indeed believe it to be a meteor crater. So anyway, probably the culmination of the crazy morning was the afternoon news report aired on Russia’s Channel One, one of the most popular federal television channels here. Of course they talked about the meteor, reporting that it was sighted above Chelyabinsk and that hundreds of people were mildly injured – mostly by shards of glass. This is all true, of course. But then came the part which made the news report go viral. Then the anchor mentioned that the authorities have found the impact crater for the meteor… and guess what footage was used? Yeah, the Door to Hell. Basically Channel One showed the whole nation an internet spoof and said it was the real deal. Once they’ve realized their mistake, they’ve pulled the piece from the schedule and updated their website to remove the ridiculous mistake – but not before several internet users managed to share their recordings of this embarrassment. Welcome to the internet guys, the place where stories are blown out of proportion and nothing stays hidden.
Channel One Russia is the biggest country-wide broadcaster with the largest audience in Russia and the CIS. Our production policy is all-round and responsive news broadcasting, creative and technological innovations in content programming, diversity and balance of content.
A wide range of news, documentary, and feature film productions, as well as entertainment programs attract a greater number of viewers each year.
It is not likely to be an Innocent mistake. Even if the media is apparently driven by shallow sensationalism, its effect is perception management. In order to manage the public inquiry about a subject, show them something more exciting/impressive, then when this second subject is shown to be fake or normal, then the level of interest for the first subject decreases too.Alana said:Why do I have a feeling that it was not a mistake?
