I've been researching this issue a bit, I want to share.
So this guy, Egon Cholakian claims that there is a super plume under Siberia that could create a super volcano that would destroy everything or almost everything on the planet and that this already happened 200 or so million years ago.
Let's go back in history.
Wiki:
So this guy says it could happen 252 million years from now again. However, we know that the planet's lithosphere is not standing still, it's constantly drifting. Simply put, the Earth's crust floats on magma, and tectonic plates colliding with each other create cataclysms: part of the plate goes into the magma - the pressure created pushes the excess magma outward in some places creating volcanoes. Something like that.
So, even if this super plume of magma remained the same as it was for 252 million years (which I doubt), Siberia has moved far enough away from it during that time.
You can see how the earth has changed over that time on YouTube: Pangea animation.
This information was confirmed by the famous volcanologist Harald Sigurdsson in his interview for the Russian Channel.
I only watch sports and cartoons on TV (because of my kids). But my investigation led me here:
According to information about how the continents have changed and Harald Sigurdsson's statements - a super plume is now somewhere under Iceland feeding the volcanoes there.
As for the fact that the temperature in Siberia is rising faster than in the rest of the world, Russian scientists attribute this to the release of large amounts of methane due to the thawing of permafrost. Gases are released, the release of which changes the landscape and climate. Thus, for example, karst sinkholes are formed, according to one version.
The Russian scientific community did not find this case with the supervolcano near Siberia convincing, saying that most likely someone wants to get money for incomprehensible research. I will not quote, although this issue was raised back in 2023 and a number of scientists spoke out about it.
As for Egon Cholakyan himself, looking at the YouTube channel where he speaks, one gets the impression that it is more about politics than science.
The feeling is that all this is to draw attention to Russia as a danger. Additional negativity against the background of general Western Russophobia and the war in Ukraine.
Anyway - I'm not calling for you to relax and believe that there is no supervolcano. No, I myself, at the first danger will save my family and run as far away as I can. But, knowledge protects.
