Turkey buzzes weakened Greece

In growing numbers Ankara’s fighter jets test Greek territorial claims.
By ELISABETH BRAW 7/23/15, 5:30 AM CET

Turkish fighter jets and military helicopters have dramatically increased their incursions into Greek airspace, according to a study based on data from the Greek military, forcing the cash-strapped Greek air force to respond.

On July 15, six Turkish fighters crossed into Greek airspace 20 times. Their visit followed aerial intrusions by Turkish military helicopters the week before. After a several years of declining numbers, Turkish air incursions into territory claimed by Greece are soaring, and so are the resulting aerial confrontations with the Hellenic Air Force.

“The main reason for the [conflict] is sovereignty concerns over the Aegean region,” said Mustafa Kutlay, an assistant professor at TOBB University of Economics and Technology in Ankara.

Turkey and Greece, he added, recognize each other’s claim to a six nautical mile-wide zone of the Aegean Sea, but Turkey worries that Greece might try to extend that to the full 12 miles permitted under international treaties. This would largely block Turkey from the Aegean. Furthermore, Greece claims 10 miles of air space around the islands, while Turkey recognizes only six miles and argues that its fighters are flying in international air space.

A question of sovereignty

“The Turks are trying to enforce sovereignty over disputed islands and bring Greece to the negotiating table,” said Thanos Dokos, director-general of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy. “What’s worrying are the low-altitude flights, often by helicopters, over these islands.”

Many of the incidents take place within the contentious four-mile radius near the Turkish coast, which Athens considers its territory and Ankara calls international airspace. Below the contested skies are equally disputed waters featuring a group of 16 islands, over which Greece claims sovereignty.

Recently, however, Turkey has become more vocal in rejecting those claims. The June and July incursions again took place above these tiny islets, including Farmakonisi (population 74), Kounelonisi, and Agathonisi. (By virtue of an agreement signed in 1952, Greece administers the disputed airspace for civilian aviation.)

GreekAirspace-011-714x472.png

Greece’s Ministry of Defense did not respond to a request for information and comment, but according to statistics collected by Christos Kollias, a Greek defense economist at the University of Thessaly, last year Turkish military helicopters and planes violated Greek-claimed airspace 2,244 times. For this May, Kollias recorded 361 Turkish incursions into Greek airspace.

At the beginning of this decade, Turkish planes entered Greek airspace several hundred times per year, including a record-low 636 times in 2013. That, in turn, was a decline from higher figures in the preceding years, but even the 1,678 incursions in 2009 do not approach the current activity. The result is constant hostile buzzing in the Mediterranean skies as the Hellenic Air Force responds to the intrusions.

“The political rapprochement between two countries [in the early 2000s] and the Greek economic crisis contributed to the decreasing number of dogfights,” noted Kutlay, who is also director of the EU Studies Center at USAK, a Turkish think-tank focusing on security and cooperation. “But the changing security environment in the region seems to have struck a sensitive nerve, and Turkey and Greece have become more sensitive vis-à-vis each other over the Aegean region.”

Dogfights cost money

In its current weakened state Greece hardly poses much of a threat to Turkey. The Turkish General Staff has not given an official reason for its increased air activity, and its spokesman referred inquiries to a local defense attaché, who did not respond.

Greece’s disastrous finances may, however, have encouraged Turkey to tease its long-time foe (and NATO ally) a bit more than usual, as every Hellenic Air Force scramble costs Greece precious euros.

GreekCoast

“In the case of air incursions, you have to react,” said Dokos. “It’s very hard to unilaterally pull back from a situation of military aggression. It’s a tragic situation, because the money we’re spending on dogfights with Turkey is money that we could have spent on other areas of defense.”

The confrontations are a serious matter for both for Athens and Ankara. The two countries almost went to war in 1987 and again in 1996. In 2006 a mock dogfight saw Turkish and Greek F-16s smash into each other, killing the Greek pilot.

Precious resources

The issue is about more than pride. Recent large gas discoveries by Cyprus and Israel have shown that there are lucrative potential deposits under the Mediterranean. Greece is also exploring the possibility of claiming a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone around the country. Because Greece controls almost all of the islands in the Aegean, such a move could turn the sea into a Greek lake.

Soon after taking office this January, Greece’s nationalist Defense Minister Panos Kammenos traveled to one of the disputed islets, while Turkish Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz claimed in Parliament that the islands in fact belong to Turkey. And this May, Kammenos proposed building a NATO base on one of the islands so that the alliance could “gain a full overview of Turkey’s behavior in the region.”

Turkey is in the midst of an extremely ambitious air force modernization program that has already seen it upgrade its existing fleet of over 100 F-16 fighter jets. In January, the government approved the purchase of four new F-35 Lockheed Martin fighter jets as well as five Boeing Chinook helicopters; it plans to buy a total of 100 F-35s.

This spring the government also approved a multi-billion dollar program for the development of fighter planes and a regional jet for civilian and military use. The country plans to build several hundred planes by 2023.

Meanwhile, Greece’s military has seen spending shrivel in recent years, and the government had to fend off demands from Greece’s creditors for more steep cuts during recent bailout negotiations.

“Turkey’s geostrategic position in a volatile region has influenced tactics and doctrine,” explained Gareth Jennings, aviation desk editor at IHS Jane’s, the defense consultancy. “There’s particular emphasis on the air-to-air role, deriving largely from differences with Greece over unresolved sovereignty claims in the Aegean.”

Yet in recent years the ancient enemies have tried to improve business relations. Last month, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu even offered to help Greece with its financial crisis.

But despite their friendlier civilian relations, neither Athens nor Ankara can stomach backing down over the Aegean.

Neither NATO nor the US ever said anything about Turkey's violations over Greece, which take place everyday, are deliberate and provocative. And of course, no one ever said anything about Israel's land/air and everywhere violations over the entire Middle East, either. It just makes my day when Russia gives them all a taste of their own medicine!

Pilots who eject from new $350billion F-35 stealth fighter jet 'will break their necks' in chilling echo of Top Gun scene
_http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3260675/Pilots-eject-new-350billion-stealth-fighter-break-necks.html#ixzz3niRaRddH

It has emerged that the seats on the F-35s proved to be flawed during tests

Tests found the ejection snapped the necks of light-weight test dummies

The US military has now banned pilots under 136lbs from flying the plane

It's the latest in a series of setbacks, which has delayed production

Published: 5 October 2015 (video)

One Californian Democrat told Defense News: 'We're seeing these flight restrictions because the F-35's ejector seats weren't tested to the level they would be on a normal aircraft, and the Pentagon rushed to field them prematurely.

'This is yet another example of the kind of procurement malpractice we should be avoiding.'

Meanwhile, the chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee Rep Jackie Speier said the issue will be discussed at an oversight hearing later this month.

He said: 'We're having an F-35 hearing scheduled for Oct. 21. I'm certain it will show up then.

'I am going to have an oversight hearing on this.'

At least one F-35 pilot is affected by the weight restriction. It does no affect the only female F-35 pilot Lt Col Christina Mau, who is the deputy commander for the 33rd operations group

Testers found that the seat rotates forward too much and, combined with the force of an ejection, it proved too much for the lighter dummies and snapped their necks.

The chilling findings are reminiscent to Goose's death in the film Top Gun.

Col Todd Canterbury, who is chief of the F-35 Integration Office Operations Division, said: 'Safety is our No1 concern and we want to make sure that we give the warfighter the safest ejection seat capable out there.

'As we discover things, we can weigh the risk of what's acceptable and what's not, and right now, until we fully understand the implication of the seat, safety is our No1 priority.'

This is the latest in a number of troubles for the new fighter jet which will be used by the Marine Corps in the US.

A design flaw left it incapable of carrying highly advanced bombs.

The F-35B's internal weapons bay was too small for a Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) load.

Though it's mandated that an F-35B jet, designed by Lockheed Martin, hold eight SDB IIs in the bay, only four reportedly fitted.

In July, a mock air battle was held over the Pacific Ocean between the cutting-edge F-35 - meant to be the most sophisticated jet ever - and an F-16, which was designed in the 1970s.

But according to the test pilot, the F-35 wasl too slow to hit an enemy plane or dodge gunfire.

The dogfight, which was staged in January near Edwards Air Force Base, California, was designed to test the F-35’s ability in close-range combat at 10,000 to 30,000 feet.

Both the F-35 pilot and the F-16 pilot were attempting to ‘shoot down’ the other.

But, according to the F-35 pilot’s report, which has only recently been made public, the jet performed so appallingly that he deemed it completely inappropriate for fighting other aircraft within visual range.

F-35 Fatal Ejection Fear Riles Congress
http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense-news/2015/10/04/f-35-fatal-ejection-fear-riles-congress/73219260/

A standard ejection is a two-stage event, according to Lockheed's F-35 website. First, an explosive charge or rocket motor integrated with the seat breaches the windscreen canopy. Second, the seat and pilot are launched upward via a rail system through the opening at a jarring rate of 12-14 Gs.

In August, testers discovered that when a lighter pilot is ejecting, the Martin-Baker seat rotates forward a bit too much, according to the source. That forward motion combined with the force of the ejection proved too much for the lighter dummies, snapping their necks.

Apparently Russia has also let Israel know that they don't belong in Syrian airspace, if this article is accurate:

Air duel between SU-30 Russian Sukhoi SM and Israeli F-15 over the Syrian coast airspace, possible destruction of four Israeli aircrafts

The Russians demanded to Israel an explanation for the presence of its fighter planes over Syrian airspace. This event indicates that the protection of Syrian airspace is now under the wings of the Russian Air Force, in coordination with the Syrian Armed Forces, the legitimate President Bashar al-Assad, under the sovereignty of the Syrian government in Damascus.
sukhoi-su-30-750x500.jpg

Six Russian multirole fighter Sukhoi SU-30 SM type have put to flight-type Israeli fighters McDonnell Douglas F-15 off the Syrian coast.

Israeli aircrafts are flying for months in Syrian airspace and especially Syria’s Naval Air Station Latakia bridgehead of Russian forces in Syria.

Israeli aircraft generally follow a fairly complex flight plan and approach Latakia from the sea.

In the night of 1 to 2 October 2015, six Russian Sukhoi SU-30 took off from SM Syrian airbase Hmimim towards Cyprus before intercepting four Israeli F-15 fighters in attack position.

Surprised by a situation as unexpected and probably not prepared for a dogfight with one of the best Russian multirole fighter, Israeli pilots have quickly turned back to the South, flying at high speed over Lebanon.

The Lebanese army has officially announced to Z 23:13 (local time) that four “enemy aircraft” (Israeli) had crossed the Lebanese airspace.

This “incident” between Russian and Israeli warplanes struck stupor command of the Israeli Air Force, which held that a possible air battle between the Israeli F-15 and the Russian Su-30 would have led to the destruction of four Israeli aircrafts.

Israel has strongly protested to Moscow this incident but the Russians demanded an explanation for the presence of Israeli fighter planes over Syrian airspace.

This incident indicates that the protection of Syrian airspace is now under the protection of the Russian Air Force. Causing gnashing of teeth in Washington.

The incident was ignored by the major news agencies but political and media relay of Israel in the United States, Europe and the Arab world will strengthen efforts to demonize Russian support to the Syrian government.
Apologies if this has already been posted.

mabar,

The one possibly good development could be an increased discontent of the countries participating in NATO.

From Wikipdedia:
The meetings of the North Atlantic Council are chaired by the Secretary General of NATO and, when decisions have to be made, action is agreed upon on the basis of unanimity and common accord. There is no voting or decision by majority. Each nation represented at the Council table or on any of its subordinate committees retains complete sovereignty and responsibility for its own decisions.

It remains to be seen what level of discontent with the U.S. hegemony will finally be needed before the NATO alliance fails.

Washington won't cooperate with Russia in a real war on terrorism for obvious reasons. Waging it undermines its objective, using ISIS and other takfiri terrorist to achieve its strategic aims.

US imperialism turns nations to rubble, set parts of the world ablaze, murders millions, creates enemies, spawns elements like ISIS, then used for imperial advantage.

When is enough enough? America is a global scourge, a serial killer, a neocon-infested monster, waging war on humanity, its mortal enemy - the real evil empire, vital to challenge and stop before it kills us all.

I hope we/I live to see that, or maybe not (to still be "alive" to see it), things would/perhaps be too worst ... although, I tend to be pessimistic, mmm ... one thing is the discontent of the people and another the discontent of the goverment and not necessarily are in comunion to what represents a discontent of the country in question ...

To me, it remais to be seen also that NATO (or no NATO) countries "retain complete sovereignty and responsibility for its own decisions".

Thanks for the link. I will read right now. I live in a isle just in front of North Africa. Yesterday a man told me that during the Irak War, around 2003, all the airplanes that went to attack Iraq were taking fuel just here, at some 20 minutes of where I live. There is a military base. And evidently the CIA is in this isle, a very important point in their geo-politics. That's why they will never give the independence to the Canarians. Yep. And that's why this isle is controlled surely by the CIA.

I am afraid yes, I will see NATO here.

I am wondering what the ISIS deserters/escapees will do and where they may end up going?

Those differences in budget and military performance give us an idea about the level of ponerization and inefficiency that plagues the US industrial-military complex

It was the same in Nazi Germany. They planned to build tanks the sizes of battleships. Which of course are to slow to take part in any offensive and most of all are easy targets for dive-bombers. But I am sure wishful thinking told them otherwise.

Nowadays we have the F-35 destined to form the backbone of US air power and some of its ‘’allies’’ (vassals). Theoretical this plane is build with the aim of being the best in everything. From which capable aircraft engineers already told the upper-brass is not possible. Different designs are needed to execute certain tasks. Nonetheless it had to be built.

Just recently a 40-year-old design F-16 defeated it in mock battle. Costs 1 trillion dollars. This fighter is over-budget, over-delayed and far from ready. Means they can't get it right. Means all that hypothetical tech is not working.

Russia’s modern air fleet on the other hand exists of the most agile, capable fighters. All are for example equipped with 3D vectoring thrust. Meaning their engines are ‘flexible’ which enables them to manipulate the directions of the thrust coming from its engines. None other have those. So indeed, What Russia missed in development during the lost decade is compensated with the total ponerization and inefficiency of the US industrial-military complex.

Psychopaths do not create, they can only destroy. If I remember correctly the C’s once said to not underestimate the tech abilities of Russia and France compared to the US?

- Putin timing is excellent. Took a awful lot of time for the world to cached up and see ISIS (Freedom fighters before) for what they are. Nobody objects to Russian intervention now. For the first time even the voice of the MSM consist of the minority. Trying desperately to portray this as Russian aggression truly exposed themselves.

Next up 9/11 ? ‘911 Truth’ cannot happen when the empire still stands and its vassals remain loyal. Tho, Vassals have no reason to remain loyal. This 'alliance' is kept together by intimidation and blackmail. You always lose under the US when Russia's diplomacy acts on mutual interests. It's not even a chose. Russia's has shown the world there is an alternative to US dominance. US actions will only become more extreme and its Vassals will have to pay for it. Good chance the US themselves will create the right climate of betrayal. Any hopeful new relationship with the US can only happen under new leadership. Only ‘9/11 truth’ can have this impact. Only '9/11 truth' can truly expose the hidden government and by that remove it. How about Putin forming a hidden alliance with US Vassals to expose 9/11. I hope he is keeping the right channels open. It's in everyone's benefit. Maybe even the only way to get rid of US toxic infleunce on Europe and the rest of the world.

The only wild card in this scenario is Israel. There is too much risk for them to be also exposed. Even if a deal is struck. They will not allow it to happen. ‘Samson Option’ should tell you that. - In order to let 9/11 truth work. Many conditions should play the same tune and play it perfectly. I suspect we are not even aware of all of those.

Anyhow, current events made me hopeful. Felt like a kid on Christmas when I heard Putin speak at the UN. Clearly he means business.
