That Assad/China are getting along, indicates that they also might be closer to "meet" the US and partners in Syria to defend their economic interests.

A unit of the US Marine Corps has arrived at an airfield in the al-Hasakah province in Syria's north, a Kurdish source told Sputnik.

US Marine Corps Unit Arrives in Northern Syria
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703131051540039-us-navy-seals-syria/

According to the source, the unit was transported on helicopters from Iraqi Kurdistan to the Rumeilan airfield located near the Syrian city of Qamishli. They started arriving five days ago, the source said. In addition to several hundred US marines, an artillery battery is expected to arrived from the Iraqi base.

According to the source, part of the military forces, which cannot arrive in Syria using helicopters, will be transported by land through the Semalika passage located between Syria and Iraqi Kurdistan.

"The number of the US forces which are currently in Syria has been boosted under the Barack Obama administration. Earlier, their presence was limited to military experts and advisors, while now we witness the arrival of the Marine Corps forces," the source told Sputnik.

Last week, a representative of the US-led coalition, John Dorrian, confirmed that the US is going to deploy Marine Corps units and rangers in Syria. 400 troops are expected to arrive. Hitherto, the US military contingent in Syria has been comprised of about 500 people.

The United States deployed US marines to the Syrian city of Raqqa without the permission of the Damascus government, Central Command chief Gen. Joseph Votel said earlier. He said that US Marines have been deployed to Syria to make sure coalition troops on the ground receive necessary support in the fight to retake Raqqa from the Daesh.

The marines will be supporting US partner forces on the ground that lead the offensive to liberate Raqqa from Daesh codenamed Operation Euphrates Rage. The operation was launched by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on November 5, 2016. The SDF was formed in 2015 as the defense force of northern Syria's de facto autonomous Rojava federation and is supported by the US-led coalition. The group is among the forces fighting Daesh and brings together Kurdish, Arab, Assyrian and Turkmen fighters, among others.

The United States has recently deployed hundreds of troops to Syria in an apparent bid to assist the looming operation aimed at liberating Raqqa, but Washington will not be able to maintain a permanent military presence in the war-torn country, defense analyst Omar Maaribuni told RIA Novosti.

Washington 'Unable to Maintain Military Presence' in Syria for Long
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703131051529894-us-military-presence-syria/

"Speaking about prospects, I don't think that Turkey or the United States will be able to maintain their dominance [in northern Syria]. This is due to many factors. The main reason is the resistance which could emerge if American and Turkish forces refuse to withdraw from the region after the war is over," he said.

In Maaribuni's opinion, the other reason has to do with Washington's plans to create a Kurdish canton spanning from the city of Afrin to the Mediterranean. The analyst said that it is impossible to carry out such a project in Syria due to demography and ethnic distribution, which prevent the Kurds from creating a "stable and self-contained" autonomous region on the border with Turkey.

"I think that America's military presence near Manbij and other cities is temporary. The United States will have to withdraw sooner or later since there are no grounds for them to be there," the analyst said. "Washington is trying to claim some of the achievement [in the fight against terrorism] as its own at the moment and improve its standing following a series of setbacks that the US has suffered."

The Democratic Union Party (PYD), one of the leading Kurdish political forces in Syria, has indicated that it plans to establish a "democratic autonomous administration" in Manbij, which made headlines last week when Russia and the United States tried to prevent Turkish-led forces and the Syrian Kurds from clashing over the city.

Syrian Kurds Plan to Declare Autonomy in Manbij at the Risk of Angering Turkey

Ewwas Eli, a senior member of the PYD responsible for foreign relations of the party's branch in Kobani, told Sputnik Turkey that the administration has not been created so far, but it will be ready to operate in the near future.

Thirteen people will be in charge of the administration," he said. "I am not aware when the Autonomous Administration of Manbij is created. I met with the chair of the administration and its members yesterday during my visit to the city. Preliminary activities with regard to declaring autonomy are drawing to a close."

The autonomous administration will be reportedly made up of 71 Arabs, 43 Kurds, ten Turkmen, eight Circassians, an Armenian and a Chechen. The new body will be run by a delegation comprising thirteen people, who will have four deputies.

The aid was delivered by two humanitarian missions. One took almost two tonnes of bread and 4.5 tonnes of other food items, as well as essentials such as blankets and bedding, to those in need in the Aleppo province, according to the statement.

Another mission delivered food and children's school accessories to Qatana in the Damascus province.

A former executive of an Israel-based defense contractor has pleaded guilty for his role in schemes to defraud a multi-billion dollar US program to finance foreign military purchases, the US Department of Justice announced in a press release on Monday.

Israeli Defense Executive Pleads Guilty to Defrauding US Aid Program
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703131051544755-israeli-defense-exec-pleads-guilty/

Yuval Marshak entered his plea to one count of mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud and one count of major fraud against the United States in US District Court in the state of Connecticut, the release explained.

"This conviction is the result of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service's (DCIS) ongoing effort to identify and investigate fraudulent activity targeting the Department of Defense and its programs that support America's national security and foreign policy objectives," DCIS Northeast Field Office acting special agent in charge Leigh-Alistair Barzey stated in the release.

According to court documents, Marshak carried out three separate schemes between 2009 and 2013, in which he falsely certified that all items sent to Israel had been made in the United States, as required by law, the release noted.

Marshak also falsely claimed that no commissions had been paid, when a company in Connecticut that was controlled by a relative received undisclosed payments, according to the release.

Two US companies have already settled charges with the Justice Department in connection with the FMF contracts.

Earlier this year, the New Jersey-based defense contractor Octal Group agreed to pay $460,000 in fines and restitution for covering up an agreement with Marshak.

A second company, Hale Products, Inc. paid more than $60,000 and agreed to cooperate with the Justice Department investigation.

In addition to fines, Marshak faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years for wire and mail fraud charges, ten years for major fraud against the US government and 20 years for international money laundering.

Media source said that the Turkish Army troops are forcing Arab citizens in Northern Syria to join the Ankara-backed militants of the Euphrates Shield Operation, killing those who do not obey.

Turkish Army Forcing Syrian Civilians to Join Militants of Euphrates Shield Operation

Hawar news reported that the Turkish army killed four civilians in the villages of Kari Sabi town in Northern Syria after they refused to join the Euphrates Shield Operation forces.

Hawar news went on to say that the Turkish soldiers further left the body of the killed Syrian civilians at the border region between Rojava and Bakour in Syria's Kurdistan.

The news website added that the Turkish army intended to send the four killed civilians via border to Rojava but it faced tough opposition by the civilians.

Media sources disclosed on Saturday that rifts were widening between militants of the Ankara-led Euphrates Shield Operation and the Turkish Army, causing tens of militants to give up fight and leave the operation.

Hawar news quoted informed sources as saying that at least sixty Ankara-backed militants in al-Rai town in Northern Aleppo dropped ties with the Euphrates Shield Operation over low salary and Turkish Army's indifferences to the promises it made to assist the militants.

Hawar news added that the Turkish army had promised to pay $400 to each militant as his monthly salary, but paid only 400 Turkish Lira to them.

The news website went on to say that after differences emerged among the Euphrates Shield forces, 15 militants were kidnapped by the Turkish soldiers and transferred to an unknown location.

Another source told Hawar news that the Ankara-backed militants were deeply worried about escalation of clashes with the Turkish soldiers, especially after the Syrian Army urged the Turkish army men to leave Syria's territories.

Syrian government officials and several ranking Russian officers in a meeting with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Manbij discussed how to transfer to the Syrian army the management and control of Tishrin Dam on the Euphrates River.

Kurdish Militants Preparing to Transfer Tishrin Dam Control to Syrian Army
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13951224000835

The Arabic language Anab Baladi news website reported that Syrian Energy Minister Zahir Kharboutli and several Russian commanders held a meeting with the SDF commanders in Manbij to discuss details of this transfer, which is seen by both sides as a necessary step to bring the dam's turbine back into operation and relaunch hydropower generation.

Other news websites also confirmed presence of the Syrian energy minister in Manbij to discuss management of the Tishrin Dam, adding the SDF has agreed to hand over the dam to the Syrian government and the ministry will soon forward is technicians, engineers and administrative staff to the region.

The military council of Manbij announced in a statement earlier this month that the Kurdish forces would surrender the villages bordering the areas occupied by the Turkey-backed Euphrates Shield Operation militants to the Syrian army.

Then, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that his government called on the US to evacuate the Kurds from Manbij in Aleppo province immediately, rejecting the agreement between the Kurds and the Damascus government.

Cavusoglu referred to the Euphrates Shield Operation in Northern Syria by the Turkey-backed militants, and told reporters that the Turkish forces did not move towards Manbij but they would start operations in the region soon.

Noting that the Turkish military men were ready to attack the Kurds in Manbij, he said that Ankara did not want Washington to continue support for the Kurds and it had several times warned the US that the Turkish forces would attack the Kurds soon.

Cavusoglu also said that Ankara and Moscow agreed to prevent clashes between the Syrian government forces and the Turkey-backed opposition (the Free Syrian Army militants), claiming that both of them pursue the same goal of annihilating the ISIL.

Elsewhere, he stood up to an agreement between the SDF and Russia to surrender the villages controlled by the Kurds in Manbij to the Syrian government.

His remarks came as the military council of Manbij announced in a statement that the Kurdish forces would surrender the villages bordering the areas occupied by the Turkey-backed Euphrates Shield Operation militants to the Syrian army.

The statement said that based on an agreement with the Russian side, the control of these villages would be given to the Syrian government's border guards.

It added that the measure would be taken to maintain the security of civilians residing in Manbij and the surrounding areas as well as regions bordering al-Bab in the Western side of Manbij, and take on the greed of Turkey to occupy the Syrian territories.

The reasons of the Syrian armed opposition’s refusal to attend the Astana talks on the Syrian reconciliation are not convincing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

"We are currently working with our colleagues from the defense ministry on the latest news, and we assume that the reasons that were mentioned in the media, at least, as those preventing the Syrian armed opposition from taking part in a new round of talks in Astana are not convincing," Lavrov told a press conference.

The minister said he and the Russian Defense Ministry spoke to Turkish officials and opposition leaders. "We have grounds to believe that there is some misunderstanding," Lavrov said.

The Arabic language al-Hadath news website reported that the ISIL has appointed Abu Ayat al-Joufi as the new governor of Raqqa after tensions intensified in the city and SDF made rapid advances across the province.

Al-Joufi was previously the governor of Aleppo and escaped al-Bab town to Raqqa a month ago.

ISIL leadership also appointed Abu al-Hareth Shami as the military Emir (leader) of Raqqa city.

A local source reported earlier today that tens of ISIL security forces were killed or wounded in clashes with the non-Syrian members of the terrorist group that took part in an unprecedented uprising against ISIL Chief Commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Raqqa city on Northeastern Syria.

A large group of Tunisian Mohajereen (immigrants) of ISIL took part in anti-Baghdadi protest in Raqqa, the source said, adding that the protest further turned into fierce clashes between the protestors and ISIL's security forces.

The source who requested anonymity added that one of the Tunisian protestors carried out a suicide operation and detonated himself among a large group of ISIL's security forces, killing at least 20 of them.

The source said that ISIL forces went on alert after the uprising and started to arrest tens of own members, while a number of anti-Baghdadi protestors escaped Raqqa city.

Russian security services prevented a terrorist act planned for March 8 to target those attending International Women's Day events in Moscow, local media said Wednesday.

Daesh-Inspired Terror Attack Planned to Hit Russian Capital on March 8 Foiled
https://sputniknews.com/russia/201703151051589304-russia-daesh-attack-march-8/

The terrorist attack was planned by a national of Tajikistan who arrived at a Moscow airport earlier in March, the Izvestia newspaper reported, citing security sources.

The 23-year old, named Izattilo M., arrived on a plane from Turkey and had taken part in the Syrian conflict, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

The terror plan went wrong when the man was taken in for airport security checks and panicked after realizing that he could be deported to Tajikistan, attempting to commit suicide with scissors as well as attempting to destroy his phone, according to the publication.

Further investigations had the terrorist confess to planning to blow himself up during March 8 celebrations in the Russian capital. Investigators are now trying to find the man's accomplices and uncover the sleeper cell that was set to supply Izattilo M. with explosives, while the man himself has been handed over to Tajikistan's security services.

According to Tajikistan's Prosecutor General, over 1,000 citizens of the country have traveled to Iraq and Syria to join the Daesh terrorist group, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States. The group's ethnic Tajik recruits are playing a major role in the current battle for Mosul against Iraqi forces. Gulmurod Khalimov, a former Tajik special operations colonel, is a key Daesh leader and is taking part in organizing Daesh defenses in the city.

Daesh-affiliated Tajik nationals had planned several terrorist attacks in Russian cities last year, with all attempts foiled by security services.

Mon. 13 March 2017 - The first truck loaded with weapons, described as the smaller one, had a full arsenal of missiles and munition made in UK and hidden under boxes of vegetables. It was coming from Daraa city in the south where the SAA is fighting a fierce battle against a new wave of terrorists attacks re-enforced from Jordan.

The second truck heading to Kiswa city south of the Syrian capital Damascus loaded with automatic machine guns, firearms, and live munitions. The arsenal was boxed and wrapped with aluminum foils to avoid detection by the SAA checkpoints.

This shipment of weapons was shipped the same time the NATO sponsored terrorists of FSA blew up civilian buses in the heart of Damascus killing scores of mostly Iraqi pilgrims on a religious visit to shrines in Bab Sgheir cemetery in the old famous Shaghour neighborhood.

It’s of no surprise the NATO’s full engagement arming terrorists fighting to destroy Syria and turn it into a failed state, similar to their previous ‘achieved goals’ in Libya and Iraq and elsewhere. The timing however might be surprising to the Russian leadership which keeps falling in the same trap time and again trying to struck deals with their ‘Western partners’ and the Erdogan regime in NATO member state Erdoganstan (formerly Turkey).

The U.S. military is sending an additional 2,500 ground combat troops to a staging base in Kuwait from which they could be called upon to back up coalition forces battling the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. is sending 2,500 troops to Kuwait, ready to step up the fight in Syria and Iraq
https://www.armytimes.com/articles/82nd-airborne-syria-iraq-kuwait-islamic-state

The deployment will include elements of the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team, which is based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. About 1,700 soldiers from the same unit are overseas now, spread between Iraq and Kuwait. They're focused on the U.S.-led effort to train and assist the Iraqi troops doing much of the fighting against ISIS there.

These new personnel, however, will be "postured there to do all things Mosul, Raqqa, all in between," Army Lt. Gen. Joseph Anderson, the Army's deputy chief of staff for operations, told House lawmakers Wednesday. He was referring to the Islamic State's two main strongholds: Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria, major urban centers where U.S.-back allies are fighting a well entrenched enemy.

"So the whole brigade will now be forward," Anderson said.

It's unclear when this new wave of paratroopers will deploy. Lt. Col. Joe Buccino, an 82nd Airborne Division spokesman, referred questions to the U.S. military command in Baghdad. Officials there did not directly address Military Times' questions seeking additional details. Rather, they issued the following statement on Friday acknowledging Anderson's remarks on Capitol Hill.

"There are a number of options under consideration as the coalition looks for ways to accelerate the defeat of ISIS," it says. "We continue to believe that the most effective way to achieve a lasting victory is to do it by, with and through our partner forces who have the greatest stake in the outcome. For operational security reasons, we will not discuss future deployments or contingency operational planning."

All told, the 82nd Airborne's 2nd Brigade Combat Team includes about 4,400 soldiers who compose infantry, artillery and cavalry units, plus their supply pipeline.

Today, there are about 6,000 American troops spread between Iraq and Syria, where this week Marine Corps artillery crews established a fire base from which U.S. forces intend to attack ISIS targets in and around Raqqa. Additionally, a team of Army Rangers was dispatched to the city of Mabij to prevent Turkish troops and Syrian Kurdish militias — both key U.S. allies in the counter-ISIS mission — from fighting one another. Meanwhile, Russian military elements, in support of troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al Assad, also are present on the city's outskirts.

The head of U.S. Central Command, Army Gen. Joseph Votel, told Senate lawmakers on Thursday that conventional U.S. forces would be required stabilize the region once ISIS fighters are flushed from Raqqa, the group's self-proclaimed capital. Officials anticipate that America's allies will need assistance preventing their return and establishing Syrian-led peacekeeping efforts.

The Army's announcement comes less than a month after reports surfaced indicating that, as part of the Pentagon's proposal, conventional military forces could be sent into Syria specifically, where a patchwork of American allies have closed in on Raqqa. Overall, the situation facing U.S. troops there is significantly more complex than in Iraq.

Asked on Thursday whether the soldiers soon bound for Kuwait have prepared to operate in such a challenging environment, a military official said they are trained to address "any contingency" in either theater.

The Pentagon earlier this month submitted plans to the White House for speeding efforts to defeat ISIS, one of President Trump's first orders upon assuming office. Those plans are said to include operations in a number of countries, not only Iraq and Syria.

Four US Senators introduced a resolution on Wednesday condemning Russia and Iran for continuing to deliver military aid to the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Senator John McCain announced in a press release on Wednesday.

US Senators Introduce Resolution Against Russia, Iran Actions in Syria - McCain
https://sputniknews.com/us/201703151051617513-mccain-syria-iran-russia/

The resolution was co-sponsored by Senators Tim Kaine, Marco Rubio and Chris Murphy.

"The resolution also denounces Russia and Iran for their political and military support of the Assad regime, and calls for protection of civilians and humanitarian workers," the release stated.

The resolution states Russia, Iran as well as Iranian-backed militias must stop operations in Syria as soon as possible and allow the flow of the humanitarian aid into the worn-torn areas, particularly in those controlled by opposition forces. (Comment - to feed the enemy food and ammo?)

The four senators also called on President Donald Trump to develop a bipartisan strategy to bring the conflict in Syria to an end.

The Arizona lawmaker has been Russia’s vocal critic throughout his career and has repeatedly called for more sanctions on Moscow related to Ukraine, Syria crises, as well as the alleged Russia's interference in the US election.

A Russian spy ship that was spotted off the east coast of the United States in February has returned, Fox News reported.

Russian Spy Ship Detected Again in Int'l Waters Off US East Coast - Reports
https://sputniknews.com/us/201703151051618411-russia-spy-ship-east-coast/

It was reported that Russia’s ship Viktor Leonov returned to international waters off the east coast of the United States after a short stop in Cuba last week to refuel and resupply.

The report explained the ship was spotted 23 miles southeast of a US Navy submarine base in Kings Bay in the US state of Georgia.

The base is home to US Navy’s Atlantic fleet of ballistic missile submarines, according to the report.

On February 14, US officials first detected the Russian ship in the international waters off the US east coast.

Earlier this week, media reported that a Russian military ship was spotted in international waters off the east coast of the United States. According to unnamed US military officials, the ship, the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov, was detected 130 km from the coast of Delaware.

Much Ado About Nothing: Why Russian Ship Off US Coast is No Cause for Concern
https://sputniknews.com/world/201702161050734420-us-russian-spy-ship/

Back-dated 16.02.2017 - "It’s not a huge concern, but we are keeping our eyes on it," an official told Fox News.

At the same time, a separate official noted that the Russian ship is capable of intercepting communications and signals and can also measure "US Navy sonar capabilities." The source said that the ship is also armed with surface-to-air missiles.

This was not the first time the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov has been spotted in the Atlantic and near the US. A year ago, the ship was involved in a joint exercise with the Venezuelan navy. It was also seen in Havana in January 2015.

Routine Activity - According to the Russian maritime doctrine, updated with regard to the American and Chinese strategies, the navy is the backbone of Russia’s maritime activities and those activities are among the top national priorities.

Russia places special emphasis on two directions, the Atlantic and the Arctic region. The Atlantic was highlighted in the document due to NATO’s increased military activities and the alliance’s expansion towards Russia’s border.

Russian naval intelligence ships are constantly present in many remote areas of the World Ocean. They do not carry offensive weapons and pose no threat to any country. They can explore migration of biological resources and the occurrence of mineral resources. At the same time, they can create 'acoustic images' of warships and submarines of the potential enemy," Russian journalist and commentator Alexander Khrolenko wrote in a piece for Sputnik.

Hydrology is another important exploration field. Naval spy ships are involved in updating a hydrologic map of the World Ocean in order to improve the distance and accuracy when detecting enemy ships.

It is believe that spy ships are capable of laying an optimal course for a submarine to avoid detection by NATO electromagnetic networks as well as designating secure patrol areas. However, the actual tasks and capabilities of intelligence ships are classified.

According to information from open sources, the SSV-175 Viktor Leonov is a medium intelligence ship, the seventh of project 864 (NATO reporting name Vishnya Class).

It was commissioned in 1988 with the Russian Northern Fleet. The ship has a displacement of 3,800 tons, a length of 91.5 meters, a beam of 14.5 meters and a draft of 5.6 meters. It can reach speeds of 16 knots and has an operation range of 7,000 miles. The ship has complements of 220 crew members.

The Pentagon is concerned that the Russian navy has been spying on the Kings Bay submarine base in Georgia, the Dover Navy base in Delaware as well as other strategic facilities on the eastern coast of the US.

According to Khrolenko, it is incorrect to assume that Moscow’s maritime activities in the region are hostile towards the US since neutral waters of the Atlantic are open to all types of ships, including military.

The Russian ship did not violate any international navigation laws and was moving at a low speed and located a considerable distance from the US coast, according to Igor Nikolaichuk, a senior security analyst at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies.

"This is a routine intelligence activity and no one is hiding this. The ship was not disguised as a civil vessel. This is routine collection of intelligence data. Almost all countries do this. The Russian ship violated no laws. Why did Fox News turn it into almost a sensation? The Russian topic is very popular in the US now and such news generates good ratings," Nikolaichuk told Radio Sputnik.

'Atmosphere of Suspicion' - The US and NATO also have a fleet of spy ships and some of which have repeatedly been spotted near Russia. For example, the USS Mount Whitney of the US Six Fleet was engaged in exploring the waters of the Black Sea.

The Pentagon is also ramping up aerial intelligence activities near Russia’s border. On February 13, a RC-135W spy plane and a P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine aircraft were on intelligence missions near Kaliningrad region and Crimea.

The RC-135W took off from the Mildenhall airbase in Britain and flew 55 km from Russia’s land border and nearly 80 km from the main base of the Baltic Fleet. Meanwhile, the second aircraft took off from the Sigonella naval air station in Sicily and flew over the Black Sea, southwest of Sevastopol.

"Apparently, in order to dismantle the atmosphere of suspicion and boost security, the West first of all needs to give up its anti-Russian posture and stop the NATO eastward expansion," Khrolenko wrote.

According to an analysis by The National Interest military publication, Washington highly overestimates Moscow as the US’ top security threat.

"The public and the government agencies that investigate national security threats […] have a heightened focus on Russia that is not entirely the result of sober analysis. […] While Russia poses a serious espionage threat to the United States, it is just one of many national security concerns. Putting too much effort into watching for a Russian hack might prevent government agencies from detecting other threats," the article read.

According to The National Interest, escalation with Russia "hamstrings the United States on a variety of fronts."

"Russia has a unique opportunity to prevent the United States from taking action in many parts of the world, and it persistently challenges American initiatives to force its way to the negotiating table," the article read.

Israeli Air Force planes were targeted from the ground after they attacked several targets on the territory of Syria, a spokesperson of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Sputnik on Friday.

Israeli Jets Attacked by Missiles From Syrian Territory – Military

Overnight on Thursday, local media reported that the sounds of explosions and sirens were heard in the Jordan Valley area.

"I can say that the sirens were the result of the incident," an Israel Defense Forces spokesperson told Sputnik, referring to the launch of missiles at Israeli planes that carried out attacks on targets in Syria.

The incident did not result in any damages or casualties on the Israeli side.

Last month, it was reported that Israeli military aircraft conducted an airstrike on the Syrian government forces stationed in the western countryside of Damascus near the Lebanese border.

Prior to that, Israel bombed a military airport near Damacus. A Syrian official told Sputnik that it was done "to encourage and support terrorists". Damascus vowed repercussions.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed an airstrike in the area of Idlib in Syria on Thursday amid reports of mass casualties when a mosque was hit during service.

The US military can confirm it conducted an airstrike near Idlib in Syria on Thursday, CENTCOM spokesperson Andy Stephens told Sputnik.

“We can confirm that we conducted a strike in the area of Idlib earlier today,” Stephens stated. “Due to the recent time of this airstrike, I don't have any additional details. Please understand that we take every precaution to prevent and mitigate civilian casualties, so we take every allegation seriously.”

In a separate statement issued later, CENTCOM said that the strike killed "several terrorists," pointing to the fact that Idlib has become "a significant safe haven for Al Qaeda" recently.

Earlier in the day, Haaretz reported citing Syrian activists that at least 35 people were killed in a rebel-held area as a result of an airstrike that hit a mosque. The London-based monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put a death toll at 42, stressing that most of those killed were civilians.

The US Central Command said it had not hit a mosque in Syria's Idlib following reports of mass civilian casualties caused by an airstrike.

The US forces airstrike carried out in Idlib, northern Syria, did not target or hit a mosque, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman said.

"We did not target any mosques. What we did target was destroyed. There is a mosque within 50 feet of that building that is still standing,"
Col. John J. Thomas said as cited by the New York Times late on Thursday, adding that the investigation would be conducted to establish whether civilians had been killed or injured by the strike.

The spokesman did not give any details as to the number of the terrorists killed in the strike.

The Syrian Army says its air defenses have shot down one Israeli warplane and hit a second after four planes breached Syrian airspace and attacked government troops near Palmyra Friday morning. The Israeli military has denied the claims. Syrian military officials and observers told Sputnik that the incident sends an important message to Israel.

https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703171051691543-israeli-plane-downed-over-syria-analysis/

On Friday morning, Syrian Army Command issued a statement that air defense forces had shot down an Israeli jet, and damaged a second, with two more planes in the Israeli squadron managing to fly away. The Army indicated that the Israeli Air Force had violated Syrian airspace, and targeted government troops near Palmyra in the center of the country.

Earlier, an Israeli military source told Sputnik that its warplanes were targeted by Syrian missiles during an attack on targets on Syrian territory, but said that no Israeli planes had been damaged or lost in the attack. An Israel Defense Forces spokesman later again denied the Syrian claim that an IDF aircraft had been lost.

According to Israeli media, the missiles fired by the Syrian air defense forces were S-200s, a long range, medium-to-high altitude Soviet and Russian design developed back in the 1960s, and which has seen numerous modernizations over the years.

On Friday, the Royal Jordanian Army confirmed that fragments of the missiles fired on Israeli jets had fallen on Jordanian territory. The IDF said that it had managed to shoot down one of the missiles.

As far as the back and forth battle of claims by Damascus and denials by Tel Aviv is concerned, experts say that it is difficult to ascertain exactly what occurred, since the Israeli military has made denial or downplaying of its losses almost standard practice.

Maj. Gen. Muhammad Abbas, a Syrian Army officer closely informed with the situation, provided Sputnik Arabic with new details about Friday morning's engagement. "This morning at 2:40 am local time, according to a report from a military source, the Israeli Air Force breached Syrian airspace in the area over Al-Barij and headed east toward Palmyra, aiming to destroy Israeli military facilities. I can declare with total certainty that the enemy's missiles failed to reach their targets," the officer said.

"According to the air defense forces, one aircraft was shot down, and a second damaged. The rest flew away. The plane that was shot down fell in occupied territory," Abbas added.

The officer indicated that the Israeli Air Force is now likely "in a state of shock over the operational efficiency, responsiveness and precision of the work of the Syrian Army in defending its airspace. Our air defense capabilities allow us to track an approaching enemy even in the skies over Jordan, and hit the target anywhere over Syria."

Col. Samir Suleiman, head of the Syrian Army's information service, clarified that the IDF's intended targets were Syrian Army positions in the mountains near Palmyra. He also confirmed that the Israeli warplanes were F-16s, which entered Syrian airspace from over Lebanese airspace near the city of Al-Nebek in the region of al-Barij.

Suleiman said that Syrian air defenses reacted to the incursion almost instantaneously, downing the Israeli plane near the Jordanian border. Wide swathes of southern Syria are currently occupied by opposition militants.

The officer indicated that the Syrian military had made significant progress in efforts to liberate territory in the vicinity of Palmyra from Daesh (ISIL/ISIS) on Thursday evening. As far as the Syrian military's further plans against Israeli attacks are concerned, Suleiman noted that a decision on this issue could only be taken by the country's military command.

Speaking to Sputnik Arabic about the implications of Friday morning's events, Syrian military observer Col. Mohammed Isa said that unfortunately,
the IDF attack effectively confirmed Israel's support for Daesh. Isa based his assertion on the fact that apart from the terrorists, there are no other anti-government forces operating in the area around Palmyra, the ancient city which was recently liberated from the extremists.

Isa lamented that while most of the world, including the Western powers, consider Daesh to be the main enemy to civilization, Israel is effectively 'providing air support' for the terrorists. The expert recalled that Israel has been known to support Syrian terrorists for a long time, including taking in wounded Nusra Front fighters to be treated in Israeli hospitals. "Today we saw another confirmation of this fact," the expert said.

For his part, Nikolai Surkov, Middle East expert and professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, told Radio Sputnik that the Syrian Army's use of missiles was an attempt to send an important 'polite signal' to the Israelis.

This is far from the first time that the Israelis have conducted air raids over Syrian territory," the analyst recalled. "They are hunting for Hezbollah, and trying, they say, to prevent the transfer of weapons."

"Through the course of the entire Syrian crisis, [Israeli has] made periodic attacks, both on the outskirts of Damascus, and on Syrian military installations on the coast of the Mediterranean," Surkov added. "Periodically, Syrian air defenses have been able to fight back." This includes a 2013 incident when Israeli cruise missiles were successfully shot down over Damascus.

As far as the causes of Friday morning's attacks are concerned, the analyst recalled that Hezbollah units (which Israel considers to be a terrorist group) have taken part in the operation to liberate Palmyra. "They could be located there, and perhaps the Israelis were hunting for one of their field commanders."

In any case, leaning toward the Israeli assertion that their aircraft weren't actually shot down, Surkov suggested that "the very fact that Syria opened fire against the Israeli warplanes, but did not shoot them down, having fired at the last moment, may be seen as a kind of warning – as if to say: do not do this anymore. This is a 'polite hint' from Damascus not to carry out strikes in these areas."

The US Media and Reuter's spin on the incident ....

Israel intercepts missile fired at its air force in Syria
https://www.yahoo.com/news/rocket-siren-sounds-jordan-valley-explosion-heard-012546303.html

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Israeli military said it shot down one of numerous anti-aircraft missiles launched on Friday at its air force which was operating in Syria, in a rare such incident that spilled over into neighboring countries.

The Syrian army said it had shot down an Israeli jet during the operation. Israel denied this, saying that all its aircraft had returned unscathed.

"At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or the IAF (Israeli Air Force) aircraft compromised," an Israeli military spokesman said.

Rocket sirens had sounded in the early morning in Israeli settlements in the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank and two Reuters witnesses heard an explosion a few minutes later.

The military said in its statement that one of the anti-aircraft missiles had been intercepted. The blast was heard as far away as Jerusalem, dozens of miles away. There were no reports of casualties or damage.

A Jordanian civil defense source said a projectile had landed in a village on the outskirts of the northern Jordanian city of Irbid, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Syrian and Israeli borders, causing light damage.

The source said army engineers were examining the object, believed to be fired from Syrian territory in the direction of Israel. Video posted on social media purported to show remnants of a rocket, possibly parts of the intercepting missile, though Reuters was unable to independently verify the footage.

"Overnight IAF (Israeli Air Force) aircraft targeted several targets in Syria. Several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria following the mission and IDF (Israel Defense Force) Aerial Defense Systems intercepted one of the missiles," the Israeli military said in its statement.

Israel has carried out dozens of strikes to prevent weapons smuggling to the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, which is fighting rebels alongside the Syrian army. However, the interception of a missile making its way over the Syrian border was an uncommon incident.

Syria's army high command said in a statement on Friday that Israeli jets had breached Syrian air space early in the morning and attacked a military target near Palmyra, in what it described as an act of aggression that aided Islamic State.

It said its air defenses shot down one of the Israeli jets over what it called "occupied ground" and damaged another. Israel denies this.

Israeli media said the Syrian army had fired surface-to-air missiles at the Israeli aircraft. The military would not provide further details on the targets it struck, nor on the amount or type of projectiles launched at its forces.

An Israeli military source said Israel's Arrow ballistic missile shield had identified an "incoming threat" and shot down one of the projectiles.

Last week Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss what he charged were Iran's attempts to establish a permanent military foothold in Syria.

Iran, Israel's arch-enemy, has been Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's staunchest backer and has provided militia fighters to help him. Israel is concerned Hezbollah, with which it fought a war in 2006, is trying to obtain sophisticated weapons it could use against Israel.

"The serious exchange of missile fire between Israel and Syria early Friday morning reflects the Assad regime’s attempts to change the unofficial rules of the game."

Israeli Media Blames Putin For Syria’s Decision to Defend Itself Against Israeli Airstrikes
http://russia-insider.com/en/unreal-israeli-media-blames-putin-syrias-lack-restraint/ri19246

So begins a column published in Israel's Haaretz.

The newspaper is of course referring to the Israeli jets that "breached Syrian air space early in the morning and attacked a military target near Palmyra", apparently in an attempt to "aid" Islamic State forces.

According to reports, it's suspected that the Syrian Army responded to this "breach" by firing off a few S-200 missiles.

This flagrant violation of Israel's right to bomb Syria unmolested "changed the rules of the game", writes Haaretz. What game, and what rules? We will leave those two questions for our readers to ponder.

But Haaretz saves the best pouting for last:

Presumably the Syrian anti-aircraft salvo was a signal to Israel that the regime’s policy of restraint in the face of the airstrikes will not remain as it was. President Bashar Assad’s recent successes – first and foremost the conquest of Aleppo – have seemingly increased the dictator’s confidence. Israel will have to decide whether the operational need – to thwart advanced weapons shipments to Hezbollah – also justifies the possible risk of the downing of an Israeli fighter jet and a broader conflict developing with Syria.

There is an interesting question as to whether the aircraft detection radar system was deployed by Israel’s new great friend, Russia, precisely one week after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned from Moscow after yet another successful visit to see President Vladimir Putin.

One can imagine that the intelligence community will also be interested to learn whether the Syrian decision to fire back was coordinated with Assad’s collaborators and partners: Russia, Iran and Hezbollah.

Projectile fragments were found in a village in Jordan’s Irbid governorate near the Syrian border on Friday. The fragments may belong to Syrian anti-aircraft missiles that the IDF says either missed their targets or were intercepted by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) during the latest air raid in Syria.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has threatened to destroy Syria's air defense systems if they target the Israeli jets once again.

Escalation Looming? Israel to Crush Syrian Air Defense if Jets Targeted Again
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703191051746758-israel-syria-strikes/

"The next time the Syrians use their air defense systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation. Israel's security is above everything else; there will be no compromise," Lieberman said on Israeli public radio on Sunday.

His remarks come after Israeli warplanes had attacked several targets in Syria overnight on Thursday.

On Friday, Israeli Intelligence and Atomic Energy Minister Yisrael Katz confirmed the attacks saying that it targeted a convoy which was supposedly carrying weapons to the Shiite Hezbollah movement.

"The Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes on a convoy in Syria, carrying a batch of weapons for Hezbollah," Katz said in a statement, distributed by his press service.

The Syrian Army command said in a statement it had downed one of the Israeli Air Force jets that violated its airspace, while the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied these claims to Sputnik.

The IDF, in turn, said on Friday that it used the advanced Arrow missile defense system to shoot down a Syrian anti-aircraft missile that was fired at an Israeli jet.

"We have no interest in interfering in the Syrian civil war, we are neither for nor against (President Bashar) Assad, and we have no interest in clashing with the Russians," Defense Minister Lieberman said on Sunday.

Our main problem is with the transfer of advanced weapons from Syria to Lebanon. That is why every time we identify an attempt to smuggle game-changing weapons, we will act to thwart it. There will be no compromise on this issue," he added.

"If the IDF does choose to act, there is a solid reason for it," he stated.

On Friday, just one day after the Israeli Ambassador to Russia Gary Koren presented his credentials to President Putin, he was summoned for clarifications over the strikes.

Also on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged Israeli air strikes in Syria, making a "rare statement on the matter," according to Israeli media. He defended Israel's right to protect itself from the transfer of advanced weapons to Hezbollah, which Israel classifies as a terrorist organization,

"Israel does not usually confirm or deny individual raids, but it may have been led to do so this time by the circumstances of the incident," Israeli international news TV channel i24 News reported on the issue.

Just as 21WIRE reported last week – the US mainstream media are still black-balling any substantial reporting about US boots on the ground in Syria. Instead, America’s media are obsessing over Trump’s tax returns, various Russian conspiracy theories, and Michael Flynn’s Moscow public speaking engagement in 2015.

BEYOND MISSION CREEP: U.S. Planning to Send 1,000 More Ground Troops into Syria
http://21stcenturywire.com/2017/03/17/beyond-mission-creep-u-s-planning-to-send-1000-more-ground-troops-into-syria/

With this latest Pentagon announcement of an additional 1,000 US troops to Syria, that would bring the total combat deployment to approximately 4,000 inside of Syria.

Considering the amount of media coverage and political debate over the 5,000 US military personnel send to Iraq over the last 3 years – one must ask why the silence in US media about the stealth build-up for a major battle in Raqqa, Syria.

Previously, 21WIRE reported how the United States has sent in combat troops to support YPG fighters (Kurdish People’s Protect Units in Syria) – much to the dismay of Turkey, and to the annoyance of both Russian and Syrian planners. Turkey has been pressing the US to change its strategy for fighting Islamic State in Syria by abandoning the YPG whom it deems as terrorists (in league with the Kurdish PKK in Turkey).

The other aspect of this is being ignored by western media and their legion of panel ‘experts’. There are a number of rival factions and militias being backed by the US besides the Syrian Democratic Forces (comprised of Kurdish YPG). the US-led Coalition have substantial investments in Sunni extremist (terrorist) fighting groups allied under the Al Nusra (al Qaeda in Syria) umbrella. Consider how back in late 2015, the US deployed 5o US Special Forces in Syria as ‘human shields’ – arguably to salvage its ‘rebels’ assets being ravaged by Russian airstrikes.

After the Coalition’s epic loss when Al Nusra-led brigades were driven out of terrorist stronghold in East Aleppo, one must ask if there an element of this in US positioning around Manbij and Raqqa?

With so many stakeholders, the margin for error is extremely thin. The situation is fraught with risks for all parties.

Note by author Patrick Henningsen This is taking place amid a political storm in Washington – as the entire Democratic Party, half the Republican Party and the whole of the US mainstream media are all trying to bring down the Trump Administration. If Raqqa is deemed a success, it will effectively give Trump a win. If it is deemed a disaster, then it will be used to fuel the anti-Trump resistance in the US. If the White House is too desperate for a win, then the prospect of a mistake or miscalculation becomes ever riskier. If a major world war is to be triggered – it could very well happen here.

Clearly, the US and others are planning a massive operation to lay siege to Raqqa, the ISIS stronghold in Syria. However, if the other similar allied operation in Mosul, Iraq is anything to go by, then expect massive civilian casualties in this battle too. The civilian carnage has been mostly censored from mainstream in the US and Europe, the ‘Coalition’ are afraid of the negative public relations backlash in the event that western public received too much negative news about the haphazard operation in Mosul. After early reports of massive civilian casualties in late 2016, it seems that the Pentagon have given the order to mainstream editorial desks to back off on negative reporting. How else can we explain how hundreds, and possibly thousands, of civilians killed in this month alone – has managed to escape any and all media scrutiny?

To underline this matter, yesterday, Human Rights Watch issued two new reports accusing Iraqi troops of using indiscriminate shelling into civilian areas in the fight to liberate Mosul from ISIS control.

Based these recent reports, it’s becoming more clear that US-led Coalition is sacrificing civilians in their objective to target ISIS fighters. To make matters worse, ISIS, like Al Nusra terrorists in Aleppo, have been using Mosul civilians as human shields. The only difference in this comparison is that western media were condemning the Syrian and Russian militaries for their anti-terror operations in Aleppo, while giving a free pass to clear US Coalition atrocities against civilians in Mosul.

Forget about any word from the US State Dept. either – as they run point on the cover-up:

All indications are that Raqqa could be even worse than Mosul. In addition to the civilian death toll for Raqqa, there is also the certainty of another Mosul repeat – a massive exodus of refugees out of the city, and heading somewhere – possibly towards Turkey.

The other conversation which has been deemed off limits by US and western media – is the fact that this US deployment inside of Syria is completely illegal under every international law, as well as in total violation of the US Constitution. US were not invited by the Syrian government – therefore, like its fellow NATO member Turkey, the US has effectively invaded Syria. US involvement in Syria is now way past mission creep.

In an interview with Sputnik, Middle East expert Abbas Juma heaped scorn on the US for its unsanctioned air strikes in Syria, which have already claimed the lives of scores of civilians and Syrian Army soldiers.

Less-Than-Friendly Fire: US Conducts Too Many 'Mistaken' Airstrikes in Syria
https://sputniknews.com/world/201703181051724303-syria-united-states-air-strikes-civilians/

On Friday, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted Syrian activists as saying that that at least 35 people had been killed in a rebel-held area in Syria's Idlib as a result of a US airstrike that hit a mosque.

UK-based Syrian dissident Rami Abdulrahman put the death toll at 42, stressing that most of those killed were civilians. A US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman, for his part, said that the US airstrike carried out in Idlib in northern Syria, did not target nor hit a mosque.

"We did not target any mosques. What we did target was destroyed. There is a mosque within 50 feet of that building that is still standing," Col. John J. Thomas said as cited by the New York Times late on Thursday, adding that the investigation would be conducted to establish whether civilians had been killed or injured by the strike.

Speaking to Sputnik, Abbas Juma said that similar "mistakes" are made by the US and its allies on a regular basis, a fact he believes should be cause for alarm.

"These mistaken air strikes take place very often. Of course, this is a war and this is a battlefield, where anything can happen. But the frequency of such 'mistakes' that lead to dozens of deaths among civilians and Syrian Army soldiers and their allies, is very annoying both to me and other people," he said.

"It seems to me that no one can guarantee that this will not happen again. I suspect that such 'mistakes' will occur regularly," according to Juma.

He also noted that the mainstream media as a rule prefers to shift the blame for similar air strikes to Russia and the Syrian Army, in an apparent bid to demonize the political image of Moscow and Damascus.

"[When such incidents occur] the Western media quickly attacks Russia and they don't care about the fact that half an hour after an incident, there will be thousands of confirmations that it was the US or the terrorists who did it. The main thing is that the 'demonic' background [the scapegoating of Russia and the Syrian Army] has been established. Regrettably, this is how mainstream media currently works," Juma said.

In February, Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) said in a monthly report that the US-led coalition airstrikes have resulted in the unintentional deaths of 199 civilians in Iraq and Syria since 2014.

The coalition is still assessing 10 reports of civilian casualties related to separate airstrikes in September, November and December 2016.

The US-led coalition of 68 nations is conducting airstrikes, ground-based attacks and rocket-propelled artillery fire against the Daesh in Syria and Iraq.

The strikes in Iraq are being conducted in support of the Iraqi government, but those in Syria are not authorized by the government of President Bashar Assad or the UN Security Council.

The Russian Defense Ministry has urged a comment from the US after photos of a purported US missile fragment found in the rubble of a bombed Syrian mosque emerged online. The Pentagon denies that their forces hit the mosque.

Russia urges US comment on reports of fatal Syria mosque strike

“A photo showing a fragment of an air-to-surface AGM-114 Hellfire missile has emerged. It leaves no chance for the US-led coalition to remain silent as usual and for diplomats to spout anti-Russian rhetoric,” Major-General Igor Konashenkov said Friday.

The airstrike on a mosque in Syria’s Aleppo province happened overnight into Friday, March 17. At least 40 civilians are feared killed.

“I think we should expect comments from the US partners anytime soon,” Konashenkov noted.

South Korean prosecutors allege that two American troops stationed in the country smuggled nine pounds worth of methamphetamine from California using the Army’s postal service.

Busted! US Soldiers Caught with $12M Worth of Crystal Meth in South Korea
https://sputniknews.com/asia/201703171051670019-busted-us-soldiers-millions-meth/

Fri. 17.03.2017 - Two South Korean nationals have also been detained, the law enforcement office said. The operation may also implicate four South Koreans with family members living in the US, Stars and Stripes reported.

One of the troops involved with the case has been indicted but not detained, while the other soldier has been imprisoned, South Korean attorneys said. Both are 19 years old and were part of the 2nd Infantry Division. They have denied the accusations that they violated the Narcotics Control Act.

Some reports suggest that the soldiers were acting on behalf of a separate third party whom officials have yet to track down. The second soldier, who was indicted but not arrested following a local court ruling, allegedly accepted money to help deliver the parcel but did not have knowledge of what was in the boxes of Reese’s Puffs and Honey Snacks.

That soldier was reported to have received the boxes of cereal and given them to another soldier, who then supplied the drugs to a civilian. The prosecution has reason to believe there is intent to distribute in this case.

“It’s the largest amount of drugs found coming through the APO [Army Post Office],” the prosecutor’s office told Stripes. The massive meth seizure could have fed or started the habits of 130,000 people. The Supreme Prosecutor’s Office cooperated with the US military and US Drug Enforcement Agency on the case, according to a statement.

SAN DIEGO — Officers in a burgeoning Navy bribery scandal called themselves the Lion King's Harem, the Wolfpack, the Cool Kids and the Brotherhood. They scouted for others who might also accept sex, trips and other lavish perks from a Malaysian defense contractor known as "Fat Leonard" in exchange for classified information.

Orgies in Manila, lavish perks: Details emerge on US Navy bribery scandal
http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2017/03/15/1681369/orgies-manila-lavish-perks-details-emerge-us-navy-bribery-scandal

Wed. March 15, 2017 - Allegations outlined in an indictment unsealed in San Diego on Tuesday give more details in the 3-year-old scandal that had appeared to be fading before re-emerging even bigger and more sordid than before.

Nine current and former military officers were charged in the latest indictment, including a recently retired rear admiral who collected foreign intelligence for the Navy's Seventh Fleet.

Party with prostitutes in Manila - It gives an extensive list of bribes to the officers from 2006 to 2012 from Leonard Francis in exchange for classified shipping schedules and other information to help his company, Glenn Defense Marine Asia. In one example, a party with prostitutes at the Manila Hotel's MacArthur Suite during a 2007 port call to the Philippines included sex acts using historic MacArthur memorabilia.

One meal during a 2006 port visit to Hong Kong cost $20,435. A dinner during a port call to Singapore that year featured foie gras, oxtail soup, cognac that cost about $2,000 a bottle and cigars at $2,000 a box.

Prosecutors say Francis, who is nicknamed Fat Leonard for his wide girth, bilked the Navy out of nearly $35 million, largely by overcharging for his company's services supplying Navy ships in the Pacific with food, water, fuel and other necessities.

Navy officers provided classified information to Francis that helped him beat competitors and, in some instances, commanders steered ships to ports in the Pacific where his company could charge fake tariffs and fees, prosecutors said.

The latest indictment raises the number of current and former officials charged to 20 in one of the Navy's worst corruption scandals. Bruce Loveless, who recently retired, became the second admiral charged in the investigation.

Adm. John Richardson, the Navy's top officer, vowed Tuesday to repair damage caused by the scandal.

"This behavior is inconsistent with our standards and the expectations the nation has for us as military professionals," he said. "It damages the trust that the nation places in us, and is an embarrassment to the Navy."

Betrayal of US Navy 'in epic proportions' - Five other defendants were arrested Tuesday in Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado and Virginia. None had attorneys listed in court documents.

The indictment describes how defendants collaborated to expand their group. A 2007 email from Robert Gorsuch, a chief warrant officer, to Francis says they were developing "personality profiles" on potential recruits. A 2008 email to Francis from Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Shedd says he and another defendant assessed whether an officer was corruptible and concluded, "We still need to be cautious with his participation in events."

Five executives of Francis' company also have been charged. Francis has pleaded guilty to fraud and is awaiting sentencing.

"This is a fleecing and betrayal of the United States Navy in epic proportions, and it was allegedly carried out by the Navy's highest-ranking officers," said Alana W. Robinson, the acting U.S. attorney in San Diego.

To date, 13 defendants have pleaded guilty, including another admiral who was sentenced in June and is believed to be the first active-duty Naval flag officer charged in federal court. Other cases are pending.

Moscow summoned Israeli Ambassador to Russia Gary Koren to inquire about airstrikes on Syrian troops near Palmyra, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Monday.

Russia Summons Israeli Ambassador Over Airstrikes Near Palmyra - Deputy FM
https://sputniknews.com/russia/201703201051757803-russia-mfa-israel-syria/

The Syrian Army command said in a statement Friday it had downed one of four Israeli Air Force jets that violated its airspace and purportedly targeted Syrian units near Palmyra.

"Yes, we asked him about this," Bogdanov told journalists. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Sputnik that its aircraft was not shot down.

The reports that Russia has summoned the Israeli ambassador to Russia for the second time within a week are not true, spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry Emmanuel Nahshon said on Monday.

Israel Denies Reports of Second Summoning of Envoy to Russia
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703201051774495-israel-ambassador-russia-syria/

On March 17, Israeli ambassador to Russia Gary Koren was asked to speak with Russian officials about the Israeli airstrike near the Syrian city of Palmyra. Earlier on Monday, media reported that Koren was summoned for a second time.

Nahshon told The Jerusalem Post newspaper on Monday that the reports on the second summoning "were not true."

Last week, Israel reportedly carried out air raids in Syria. Following the incident, the Syrian Foreign Ministry sent two letters to the UN Security Council, urging the condemnation of Israel over the attack on Palmyra and violations of Syrian airspace.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel would continue its efforts in preventing attempts to arm Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based Shia Islamist militant group that supports the Syrian government.

Syrian President Bashar Assad, commenting on a statement by Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman about the intention to destroy Syria's air defense systems in the event of attacks on Israeli aircraft, told Russian journalists that the protection of Syria's borders is the right and duty of the Syrian authorities.

Assad on Israeli Threats: Defending Borders is 'Our Right, Duty'
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703201051787165-syria-assad-israel-air-defense/

He added that he thought Russia could play an important role in that regard while being guided by international law.

"Defending our borders is our right, and it's our duty, not only our right. If we don't do it as officials when we can do it, we should be blamed by the Syrian people, we should be held accountable. So, we don't have to ask ourselves that question, whether there were statements by Israeli officials or not. We don't base our policy and decisions on their statements," Assad told Russian journalists.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has warned that Israel will destroy Syrian air defense systems if it attempts to down Israeli aircraft again. The warning came after the Syrian S-200 air defense system shot down an Israeli warplane and hit another.

Israeli Threats to Destroy Syria’s Air Defense Aimed at 'Advancing Own Interest'
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703201051785149-israeli-threats-to-syria-advancing-own-interest/

The Syrian military officials said that the aircraft targeted a military site near Palmyra, whereas Israel says that they were aimed at an alleged weapons shipment to Hezbollah.

Radio Sputnik discussed the issue with professor Eyal Zisser, an expert on Syria from Tel Aviv University.

“For the last several years when the Israeli intelligence gets information about a shipment of weapons from Iran to Hezbollah through Syria, Israel sends aircraft to attack that specific weaponry. The idea was not to interfere in the Syrian war or attack Syrian army positions but to attack shipment of weapons to Hezbollah,” Zisser said.

He further spoke about which weapons Israel was trying to destroy saying that it was probably air missiles, as Hezbollah has so many of those already.

Regarding Liberman’s response to this incident threatening to destroy Syria’s defense systems, the professor said, “The response is mainly rhetoric although sometimes in the Middle East rhetoric does lead to action and that needs to be avoided.”

Zisser further said that, “Israelis are following their own interest. These weapons are supplied to Hezbollah through Syrian territories so that makes Syria an enemy and in the eyes of Israel why not use the opportunity while Assad is struggling and is so busy with his own problems. Israel is using this as opportunity to advance its own interest.”

Russia and Israel sort of had an agreement that any military equipment going from Iran to Hezbollah to fight against Daesh would not be used to attack Israel. Talking about this agreement, the professor said that any escalation of tension between Syria and Israel also threatens Russia’s military positions.

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Russian President Vladimir Putin only a week ago and they discussed those issues. Of course I think now there is an open channel aimed to avoid incidents like these … but Russia is working together with Iran to keep stability in Syria and that concerns Israel,” Zisser said.

He further said that the mission is to maintain friendly relations between the two countries and at the same time to express concern.

“It is very good that Russia is playing the role because Russia has open channels to all sides and it’s in Russia’s interest but it can help all sides to avoid escalation and deterioration and so on,” the professor said.

Zisser further spoke about Hezbollah and whether it actually poses any threat to Israel.

Damascus will file a lawsuit against local and international courts after having prepared dozens of documents proving that the crimes against the Syrian people and the country were committed by these individuals and states, Syrian Justice Minister Najm Hamad Ahmad said.

Damascus to File Lawsuit on Individuals, States for Crimes in Syria
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703211051818181-syria-lawsuit-crimes-against-civilians/

Ahmad noted that the Syrian Court regarded the terrorist crimes as criminal offenses, while Syrian President Bashar Assad had adopted a number of decrees on amnesty for militants who surrender and hand over their weapons, "which comprised thousands of people."

"There are dozens of documents proving that the crimes were committed in Syria. A lawsuit will be filed to the local, regional or international courts against the people, as well as Arab and other foreign states which committed terrorist attacks in Syria," Ahmad told Sputnik.

"All of them managed to return to normal life, restore at work or at the institution. Many of them joined the Syrian army. The number of those granted amnesty amounted to 4,476 people in 2016. We are currently working on reconciliation of the opposing sides at local level in order to achieve peace and stability all over Syria," Ahmad said.

A representative of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance largely made up Kurdish and Arab militias, has confirmed that the Pentagon is planning to deploy an additional 1,000 US ground troops to Syria to assist the SDF in the upcoming operation aimed at liberating Raqqa, the de facto capital of Daesh's caliphate.

Kurds Say Pentagon Plans to 'Send 1,000 Troops to Syria in the Coming Weeks'
https://sputniknews.com/military/201703211051812461-sdf-us-troops-syria/

"Every two days the US deploys a large amount of weapons, primarily heavy armaments, to the region. They have sent tanks, armored vehicles, missiles, sniper rifles, mortar launchers and other types of weaponry," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Sputnik Turkey. "In addition, the United States has told us that a decision was made to send an additional 1,000 US troops to take part in the Raqqa operation."

According to unconfirmed reports, this deployment is likely to take place in the coming weeks.

US service personnel are expected to serve in a training, advisory and assistance capacity during the anti-Daesh campaign on one of the last militant strongholds across the Middle East. They will not take part in combat, at least initially.

"American soldiers will teach us to use heavy armaments. They will serve as military advisors during the operation and coordinate airstrikes of the US-led coalition planes," the source said.

According to the information provided by the SDF, their forces are currently located 4 kilometers (nearly 2.5 miles) to the north, 18 kilometers (11.2 miles) to the east and 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) to the south of Raqqa.

On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on the organized withdrawal of more than 400 terrorists and members of their families from the northwestern suburb of Syrian Homs. The al-Wyer district remains, in fact, the last stronghold of the armed opposition in this administrative center of the country's largest province.

Terrorists Leave Strategically Important Syrian City as Army Regains Control
https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201703211051809482-syria-terrorists-leave-strategic-city/

“Withdrawal was preceded by almost a month of tense negotiations because the terrorists put forward their conditions while the Reconciliation Center and Syrian side put forward others,” said Lieutenant General Aleksey Kim, head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in Syria.

He added that it was necessary to come to a common denominator so that both sides were satisfied with the fulfillment of these requirements. The negotiation process was very difficult.

According to the center, the terrorists who have not yet left al-Wayer are also preparing to lay down their arms. Many of them will go to militia or replenish the ranks of the Syrian police in the framework of amnesty announced by the Syrian president.

The military experts have said that total control by Damascus over this city is a major strategic success for Bashar al-Assad and diplomatic for the Russian negotiators.

Importance of Homs - Only a glance on the map is enough to understand the geographical importance of Homs, the third largest city in Syria with a pre-war population of 900,000 people.

It occupies a strategically important intersection at the crossing of major highways. These traffic routes connect Damascus (in the south), the Hama province, Idlib and Aleppo (in the north), the Tartus and Latakia provinces (in the west), and Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor (in the east).

Homs has great value not only as an important transportation hub. This city is a large industrial center. It houses an oil refinery and several oil storage facilities. From Homs to Damascus and from Aleppo to Latakia there are pipelines.

In addition, before the war the city was one of the largest agricultural centers of Syria. Corn, cotton, wheat, vegetables and fruits were grown here. Right now most of the infrastructure is destroyed but its restoration is the key to economic, food and fuel-energy security of the whole country.

At the same time the road which divides the bus station and Abbasid square is still controlled by the government forces.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian government troops repelled several attacks by al-Nusra Front in Jobar municipality. Meanwhile, militants shelled the Barzeh neighborhood northeast of Damascus, a witness told Sputnik.

To date, the Syrian military has regained control of all the facilities in the vicinity of an industrial area north of Jobar, eliminating al-Nusra Front militants.

The announcement that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will visit Russia next month instead of going to his first meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sends a disturbing message to US allies, Congressman Mike Quigley said in a press release on Tuesday.

Tillerson's Decision to Skip NATO Meeting, Visit Russia 'Disturbing'
https://sputniknews.com/politics/201703211051818887-tillerson-russia-nato-meeting/

Quigley noted that Tillerson affirmed the importance of NATO during his US Senate confirmation hearing, and he calls on the Secretary of State to rethink his decision.

"Given Vladimir Putin’s open disdain for NATO, and President Trump’s vocal skepticism about this vital alliance, Secretary Tillerson’s decision to miss this meeting with our global partners sends a very disturbing message to the American people and our friends around the world."

On Monday, the State Department announced Tillerson would not attend the NATO meeting in Brussels on April 5-6.

Congerssman Mike Quigley from the US state of Illinois serves on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee.

The Trump administration does not view relations with the North Atlantic Alliance or Europe as a priority as evidenced by the fact that US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will not attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers scheduled for April 5-6, political analyst Vladimir Batyuk told RIA Novosti.

Tillerson's Revised Schedule Shows NATO is 'Clearly Not a Priority' for Trump
https://sputniknews.com/politics/201703211051808651-nato-not-priority-trump/

Batyuk, who heads the Political and Military Research Center at the Moscow-based Institute of USA and Canada Studies, mentioned that this development is "a clear indication" of what the United States currently views as a priority. He also mentioned other signs indicating that this is a correct assessment.

NATO is clearly not a priority. German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Washington is a testament to that," he said. "Under these circumstances, the Middle East and the Far East, but surely not Europe, are significant to the United States."

The US State Department has confirmed that Tillerson will skip the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, telling Sputnik that US Undersecretary Tom Shannon will be present there instead. A US State Department spokesperson also said that Tillerson plans to visit Russia in April. No specific date has been provided. The Russian Foreign Ministry has also declined to comment on the upcoming visit, but unconfirmed reports say that America's top diplomat could come to Moscow on April 12.

Batyuk said that a range of topics will be on the agenda of Tillerson's visit, with discussions not limited to the Syrian crisis or sanctions.

"Not only the Middle East, but also the situation in the Asia Pacific, for instance North Korea, US air defense systems in South Korea, something which has sparked concern not only in Beijing, but also Russia" could be on the agenda, the analyst said. "There are also issues linked to disarmament. In particular, [Russian and American officials] could discuss preserving the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty."

The INF Treaty, a key Cold War era agreement, was signed by the Soviet Union and the United States in 1987. Washington and Moscow have occasionally accused each other of violating the bilateral agreement, which bans nuclear and conventional missiles that have a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.

"So far it is not known about the visit. If and when we have something to add to this issue, we will immediately let you know," Ryabkov said.

A State Department spokesperson told Sputnik early Tuesday that Tillerson planned to travel to Russia in April, following media reports naming April 12 as the date of his visit.

The Syrian army's air defense units shot down a spy drone belonging to the Israeli regime at midnight Monday after violating Syria's airspace in the Southern parts of the Southwestern province of Quneitra.

Tue Mar 21, 2017 - According to a statement released by the Syrian military, the Skylark reconnaissance drone was shot down over Samadaniyah Sharqiah, near the border town of al-Quneitra.

The Israeli army also confirmed that one of their reconnaissance drones has been shot down by the Syrian army in the late hours of Monday.

General Command of the Syrian Armed Forces said in a statement on Friday that the Syrian air defense shot down an Israeli warplane and hit another one after four aircraft breached the war-torn country's airspace.

"4 Israeli enemy aircraft penetrated our airspace at 2:40, this morning in the al-Bareij area across the Lebanese territory and targeted the military positions on the direction of Palmyra city East of Homs province," the armed forces' statement said, adding, "Our air defense system engaged and shot down an air plane in the occupied territories and hit another and forced the rest to flee."

"This desperate attempt and blatant aggression of the Zionist enemy, was a move to support terrorist group and raising their morale, and the disruption of the Syrian Arab Army victories in the face of terrorist organizations," the statement added.

"General Command of the Armed Forces affirms its determination to counter any attempt of the Zionist aggression on any part of the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic," the statement underscored.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military told Sputnik that its combat planes were targeted by missiles after they had attacked targets in Syria.

However, the incident allegedly did not result in any damages or casualties on the Israeli side, according to the source.

At least one civilian lost his life after an Israeli unmanned combat aerial vehicle carried out an attack in Syria’s Southern province of Quneitra, reports said.

The drone targeted a vehicle as it was travelling along a road linking Khan Arnabah town to the capital city of Damascus, leaving the occupant dead, presstv reported. Local sources identified the victim as Yasser al-Sayyed.

Syria’s al-Masdar news agency later published a photo of Sayyed’s black sport utility vehicle damaged in the Israeli drone strike.

The development came two days after the Syrian army announced in a statement that four Israeli fighter jets had violated the Arab country’s airspace, adding its air defense had shot down one of the military aircraft and hit another.

Syrian President Bashar Assad reacted to Israeli threats about consequences of any further attack on Israeli aircraft by Syria and said protection of Syria's borders is the right and duty of Syrian authorities.

Assad: Syria Not Affected by Israeli Threats, Continues to Defend Borders
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13960101000095

"Defending our borders is our right, and it's our duty, not only our right. If we don't do it as officials when we can do it, we should be blamed by the Syrian people, we should be held accountable. So, we don't have to ask ourselves that question, whether there were statements by Israeli officials or not. We don't base our policy and decisions on their statements," Assad told Russian journalists, Sputnik reported.

The Syrian president made the remarks commenting on a statement by Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman about the intention to destroy Syria's air defense systems in the event of attacks on Israeli aircraft,

He added that he thought Russia could play an important role in that regard while being guided by international law.

Syrian President Bashar Assad also told Russian reporters that the White Helmets non-governmental organization members are supporters of al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

Assad noted that the same members of the organization, who were considered to serve for humanitarian purposes, were engaged in killings.

"White Helmets are al-Qaeda, they're al-Qaeda members and that's proven on the net," Assad said.

"The same members are killing or executing or celebrating over dead bodies, at the same time they are humanitarian heroes, and now they have an Oscar as you know," Assad said.

White Helmets' activities in Syria have repeatedly been questioned. However, mainstream media and even Hollywood praised the organization, which suspiciously worked only in areas controlled by Fatah al-Sham Front, also known as al-Nusra Front terrorist group, which used to be affiliated with al-Qaeda.

One of the most controversial decisions at this year's Oscar ceremony was the fact that The White Helmets, a movie produced by digital giant Netflix, won Best Documentary Short. For the company, it was their first-ever Oscar at the prestigious ceremony.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly raised the issue of White Helmets' controversial activity in Syria.

However, a number of videos emerged in the Internet revealing that the rescue operations were staged with the "victims" wearing make-up and given instructions what to say. The rescue workers were allegedly seen on some videos with arms and in military uniform.

Sgt. Maj. Timonthy J. Rudd, 44, was participating in Key Resolve, but his death was not related to the joint military exercises underway on the divided peninsula, officials said.

Rudd, a native of Post, Texas, “died from a non-combat related incident” Sunday in the southeastern port city of Pohang, a statement said. It gave no further details, pending an ongoing investigation.

Rudd served as the sergeant major for the Headquarters Regiment, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

He had been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, an Army Commendation Medal, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and a Combat Action Ribbon.

“Sgt. Maj. Rudd gave 27 years of dedicated service to the Marine Corps, and it was an honor to work with him. His death is a great loss to Headquarters Regiment and the Corps,” said Col. Christopher A. Feyedelem, commander of Headquarters Regiment, 3rd MLG.

A US diplomat was expelled from New Zealand after Washington refused to waive diplomatic immunity so police investigating a serious crime could question him, officials said.

New Zealand Expels US Diplomat after Police Probe Stymied
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13951230000385

Details of the alleged crime have not been revealed but local media reported the diplomat left the South Pacific nation last week suffering a broken nose and black eye, Star Online reported.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said he was "disappointed" at the US refusal to waive immunity and in response asked for the person's withdrawal from New Zealand.

"Officials in Wellington and our ambassador in Washington DC have clearly conveyed to the United States the expectation that foreign diplomats obey the law in New Zealand and are seen to face justice in New Zealand," he said in a statement released to AFP Monday.

Police said they were called to an incident in Lower Hutt, on Wellington's outskirts, in the early hours of March 12, which "involved an individual from the US embassy in Wellington".

By the time they arrived the person had left the scene and no arrests were made.

Attempts to further investigate hit a diplomatic brick wall.

McCully said foreign affairs officials relayed a police request to waive immunity but their US counterparts refused.

Local media named the diplomat as Colin White and said he left Wellington with his wife and children.

TVNZ, which broke the story, reported that White was a technical attaché who had been working closely with New Zealand's intelligence service, the GCSB.

A spokeswoman for the US embassy said they were "communicating with New Zealand authorities" on the issue.

"As a matter of policy, we do not comment on the specifics of matters under investigation," she said in a statement.

"We take seriously any suggestion that our staff have fallen short of the high standards of conduct expected of US government personnel."

McCully said the US had stated it always fully investigated all allegations involving its diplomatic staff.

Diplomatic immunity, formalised in the 1961 Vienna Convention, means foreign envoys are protected from local law enforcement in the country to which they are posted.

The most recent known case of it being invoked in New Zealand was in 2014, when Malaysian military attaché Mohammed Rizalman bin Ismail was accused of indecent assault.

It was eventually revoked and Rizalman was sentenced to nine months' home detention after being found guilty in a Wellington court.

They de-masked the pen-name of a feminist author who had written scathingly on US foreign policy, white supremacy, ‘Al Qaeda’, and the horrors of conflict. This author, Emma Quangel, was revealed to be a journalist working with refugees in the Syrian region, but one who had chosen a protective pseudonym from which to write most politically. Despite no evidence of hate-speech let alone actual wrong doing, she was smeared as a treasonous militant that loathed Syrian refugees, and those that attacked also demanded she be fired. However, following a prolonged hate campaign targeting Quangel, it was discovered US-aligned media personality, Molly Crabapple along with a network of associates from Vice and Buzzfeed, were not just the beneficiaries of an identity fraud hack, but also heavily implicated in its very construction. (Those implicated include Danny Gold, Idrees Ahmad, Oz Katerji, Hayes Brown, Ben Smith, Charles Davis, Natasha Lennard, and Miriam Elder — in no particularly order or severity.)

At the same time Quangel’s antagonists and harassers also began aiming for the United Nations which is a timing that could not be more fortuitous for Western militants engaged in Syrian conflict. Running parallel had been the much covered “Syrian Starvation Siege of Madaya” which was essentially a narrative launched by Vice on January 4th. This and it’s author, Avi Asher-Schapiro, have since been discredited. This was crass war propaganda to the point where images were exposed as fakes forcing Vice to issue retraction, but worrying Vice executives haven’t disciplined Schapiro for such knowing “incompetence”. Following this story was a remarkable collision of coincidence:

  • January 8th: Quangel is exposed and smeared as a war crime denying United Nations employee allied with the Assad government who should be sacked for endangering refugees.
  • January 10th: Buzzfeed push the smears to an international audience.
  • January 11th: The Syria Campaign (which is a private British company networked with American public relations firm Purpose LLC, and British-Syrian oil company Petrofrac) launch a media attack that would have taken weeks to construct. In this they explicitly smear the United Nations for denying war crimes and being corrupted by the Assad Government.
That there was a plot involving Crabapple, Katerji, Ahmad and Buzzfeed Brown is beyond doubt, but one has to suspend disbelief to avoid seeing a coordination in a wider media war demanding a Syrian coup and destruction. The McCarthyism should be enough to destroy any left-leaning pretensions Crabapple may have contrived since Occupy Wall Street, but it’s now clear this self-described “radical war journalist” is something beyond, posing a real threat to activists, sources and subjects who have politics opposed to US foreign policy. Murkier still, the network has known the full identity of Quangel for over a year, yet triggered the character assassination at precisely the time when The Syrian Campaign needed an aid worker on which to vehicle their accusations against the United Nations. When journalists flirting stories from war-zones start fabricating reality, they cease to be journalists. When they start attacking personnel to further war narratives they implicate themselves as unconscious or conscious intelligence assets.

I highly recommend the entire article. It documents quite well the sordid media co-ordination and confluence of mainstream liberal pro-war activism, white supremacy, and the regular garden variety intolerance of dissent to destroy and threaten and silence a journalist with some politically incorrect opinions. That's a lot of diverse ideology united in pathology. :curse: :curse: :curse:

I'm sharing an article from February 7th that I read today. It gives an infuriating account of a politically motivated character assassination in coordination with the "Starvation Siege of Madaya" Psy-op.

Thanks for sharing and Posting this article, Whitecoast. It contains a variety of information, namely, the actors involved in the propaganda scheme (Vise,
Buzzfeed, Molly Crabapple & Avi Asher-Schapiro) complimented by another propaganda hit-piece (Syrian Starvation Siege of Madaya).

The article also documents how a victim (Emma Quangel), a war journalist working with refugees in the Syrian region was targeted, smeared and her protective pseudonym exposed, placing her in danger and possible assassination.

The "dates" and timing of this smear campaign are important - to help identify where it might fit in - in the larger picture. Notice, the article (Syrian Starvation Siege of Madaya) was published on Jan. 4, 2017 and the dates Jan. 8th, 10th & 11th associated with the attacks on Quangel and the United Nations.

Now notice - what activity was in focus at the U.N. during the time frame of Jan. 4 through the 11th. On Jan. 1st., a new UN Secretary-General was Appointed. Antonio Guterres was replacing former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Emma Quangel (Taryn Fivek) was/is the current Public Information Officer at International Organization for Migration and a current press officer (journalist) at the UN.

Checking past information on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon suggests he sided with NATO-U.S. Policy and dictates, instead of operating under neutrality in Foreign Policies. The new appointee, Antonio Guterres served as the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees, for a period of ten years and has a track record of adhering to International Law and it's Mandates, without taking sides in various political developments.

Speculation, on my part, Antonio Guterres might not be one who is easily manipulated or "bought off" to dance to the tune of the U.S. and NATO dictates?
Emma Quangel was smeared and compromised, to help cast a shadow over the new UN Secretary-General, so he would (eventually) buckle under U.S. and NATO's authority?

On Thursday the UN Security Council unanimously nominated former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres to be the next UN Secretary General. The recommendation will now be put before the 193-member UN General Assembly for approval.

Guterres served as the UN's High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to the end of 2015. He is set to succeed incumbent UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon when the South Korean steps down on December 31 this year. Portugal's former UN ambassador Francisco Seixas da Costa told Sputnik that the unanimous recommendation of the Portuguese is an important demonstration of unity by the Security Council.
