Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Lavrov has warned the West not to interfere in Syrian and Russian forces engaged in antiterror actions in the northwest province of Idlib: "I hope our Western partners will not give in to [rebel] provocations and will not obstruct an antiterror operation," he said.

This as Reuters reports that a planned "phased offensive" is imminent and as massive Syrian Army reinforcements and military convoys have been filmed this week heading toward the last major anti-Assad holdout.

Reuters reports based on Syrian pro-government allied sources:

The offensive would initially target southern and western parts of the insurgent territory, but not yet Idlib city, said the source, an official in the regional alliance backing Assad.
“The final touches for the first stage will be completed in the coming hours,” the official added, without saying when it would start.

Lavrov called Idlib a "festering abscess" that needed to be “liquidated” of terrorists and jihadists, according to reports.

"I hope our Western partners will not give in to [rebel] provocations and will not obstruct an antiterror operation," he said in comments made Wednesday.

Mention of "provocations" is a reference to Russian assertions this week that the al-Qaeda group that controls Idlib, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, is planning to stage a "chemical attack" incident in order to blame Syrian and Russian forces, in the hopes that the West will intervene militarily against Damascus.

Russia now says it has staged its largest naval build-up in the Mediterranean since its entry into the war at the invitation of Damascus in 2015.

More Syrian Armytroops were seen heading towards the frontline with Idlib province in north-western Syria, as they passed through Maar Shahour village in Hama Governorate, on Monday. Soldiers rode on top of lorries carrying tanks, artillery and armoured personnel carriers. An army officer said his troops were ready for the 'final battle' against militants in Idlib province.

Lavrov further mentioned Turkey in his Wednesday statements, saying Moscow was in contact with Turkey and the U.S. on the situation in Idlib, noting there is a "full political understanding" between Moscow and Ankara, though the Russian FM didn't provide details.

Meanwhile, NATO has confirmed the large Russian battleship and naval presence off Syria's coast, and has called on all external powers to exercise "restraint"; and a United Nations spokesman has warned that "up to 800,000 people could be displaced and that the number of people who are in need of humanitarian assistance."

In statements made on Tuesday the US State Department reiterated to reporters the United States "will respond to any verified chemical weapons use in Idlib or elsewhere in Syria ... in a swift and appropriate manner."

Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said further that senior U.S. officials have engaged with their Russian counterparts "to make this point very clear to Damascus" that chemical weapons "will not be tolerated" and could meet with massive military response. She also repeated that Assad would be held responsible.

Russian state sources on Wednesday cited the Russian Defense Ministry to say it has detailed intelligence confirming militants in Idlib are planning a chemical "provocation". Per RT News:

The Russian military has received information from several sources in Idlib Province that “a large supply of poisonous agents has been brought to the city of Saraqib on two trucks from the village of Afs,” Major-General Aleksey Tsygankov, head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the opposing sides in Syria, said in a statement.
The chemicals were delivered to an arms depot, used by the militant group Ahrar al-Sham, “accompanied by the eight members of the White Helmets organization,” Tsygankov said, adding that the cargo was met by two high-ranked Ahrar al-Sham commanders.
Russia says that as Idlib's al-Qaeda groups face imminent defeat, they plan to stage an event to gain the attention of the West, which has already promised it will hit back at Syrian government positions.

Analysts have predicted the Idlib campaign will be the bloodiest and longest grinding final battle of the war.

But what should by now be obvious to all is this: Assad, on the verge of total victory, has absolutely no incentive whatsoever to commit the one act that would ensure his own demise after emerging victorious after seven years of war.

United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura and his Special Advisor, Jan Egeland, speak to the press following the meeting of the Humanitarian Access Task Force.

OSE Syria - Media Stakeout: Humanitarian Access Task Force (Geneva, 4 September 2018)
----

The UN’s top humanitarian advisor for Syria appealed for “sanity now at the end, hopefully, of this, the worst war of our generation” and said it was no way to “liberate a people or to save a city by crushing it with the civilians inside.”

Jan Egeland, the Special Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria, told journalist in Geneva today (4 Sep) that intense humanitarian and political diplomacy on Idlib was ongoing. He added, “if it succeeds we will have hundreds of thousands of lives spared; if it fails in the next days and hours we could see a battle more cruel than any previous battle in this, the cruelest war of our generation.”

Egeland said he is looking to Russia, Turkey, Iran, and the western countries with influence on the parties to come with hope for civilians. He noted that there are more babies than terrorists in Idlib with over one million children in the area.

The Special advisor said hundreds of thousands of people fled to Idlib because it was considered safe as a recognized de-escalation zone by the Astana guarantors. He noted that it was possible to end fighting through talks in Idlib as was done in other places.

Egeland said the building of forces and the fortification inside Idlib signal that innocents would die at a much higher ratio than armed men in a war scenario, which would also endanger the humanitarian lifeline for some two million people.

Jan Egeland, Special Advisor to the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria:
“We are prepared now in our planning for war, but we pray there will be no war. We cannot have war in Idlib because it’s filled to the brim with the internally displaced, with civilians.”

The Special advisor appealed for “sanity” which would mean “not repeating eastern Aleppo, eastern Ghouta, and Ar-Raqa; it is no way to liberate a people or to save a city by crushing it with the civilians inside.” He said armed opposition groups destroyed bridges in the city which meant that civilians do not have freedom of movement.

Egeland said a humanitarian response plan has been launched for Idlib which calls for 310 million USD but the funds were not available adding that the current humanitarian operation was barely funded.

"On the same day [September 4], four planes from the Russian air unit deployed at the Hmeymim Airbase carried out strikes on Nusra Front* terrorist group targets in Idlib province with precision-guided munitions," Konashenkov said.

According to the spokesman, the strikes were carried out on the terrorists' storage facilities where they kept drones, located outside settlements, as well as "detected sites where assault drones were launched to carry out terrorist attacks on Russia's Hmeymim Airbase and settlements in the provinces of Aleppo and Hama."

"The Russian aircraft carried out all strikes solely on the identified terrorist targets, as confirmed through several channels, located far from settlements," Konashenkov said.

He added that two Su-34 jets had also destroyed a workshop where terrorists assembled drones and a warehouse of explosives for them.

Konashenkov noted that the multipurpose Su-35S fighter, equipped with high-precision ammunition, also destroyed a warehouse in which the man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) of terrorists were stored.

Wed Sep 05, 2018 - Syrian Intelligence Forces Operating Behind Terrorists' Frontline in Idlib
Farsnews

The Syrian army has sent its intelligence forces to the depth of key regions in Idlib which are under occupation by the terrorist groups, days before it starts its long-awaited military operation to capture the last major territory held by militants.

The Arabic-language al-Moraseloun news website reported on Wednesday that a large number of Syrian intelligence forces have been stationed in several cities and towns held by Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) and other terrorist groups in Idlib and other occupied areas in Aleppo.

It added that several images and footages have been released by these forces which show the terrorists' strongholds, checkpoints and security zones near Idlib, noting that the intel wired to the Damascus army by these operatives could deal a heavy blow to the terrorist front in the upcoming military operations in the province.

According to the report, the terrorists have installed CCTVs in several regions, including Saraqib, which separates the terrorist-held regions from the army positions, and Idlib city to discover these intelligence officers.

Meantime, the Syrian army's intelligence forces continue providing precise information about the terrorists' positions, arms caches, their commanders' moves and other logistic information, to facilitate military operations in Idlib.

The Syrian Army dispatched on Tuesday more soldiers and military equipment to Northwestern Syria on Tuesday for an imminent large-scale operation against terrorists in Idlib, Hama, Lattakia and Aleppo provinces.

The army sent twenty tanks and BMP vehicles, floating bridges and tens of personnel carriers to the battlefields in Northwestern Syria.

In the meantime, the army's artillery and missile units pounded the positions and movements of Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at in the village of al-Jabeiryeh and in the town of al-Latamina in Northern Hama, inflicting major losses on the terrorists.

Other artillery units opened heavy fire at the movements of al-Turkistani Islamic Party in the small towns of al-Ziyara, al-Mashit, al-Zi'yadiyeh and al-Qarqour in Western al-Ghaab Plain and in the town of Badama in Jisr al-Shughour region in Western Idlib, killing and wounding a number of terrorists.

The sources said that the bridges in Western Hama are the main linking routes to terrorist-held areas for the Syrian army.

The sources said that Tahrir al-Sham stationed several firing squads in main squares across the town of Harem in Western Idlib to arrest and execute those who try to promote peace with the army.

Wed Sep 05, 2018 - Russian FM: US Demonstrates ‘Subtle Desire’ to Rescue Terrorists in Syria’s Idlib
Farsnews

Russian FM Sergey Lavrov said Washington has never delivered on its promise to separate the so-called ‘moderate’ Syrian opposition from the terrorists, and once again seems to be trying to get al-Nusra off the hook in Idlib.

“The de-escalation zone in Idlib remains the only one, where tens of thousands of extremists are concentrated, spearheaded by Jabhat al-Nusra,” Lavrov told Russia's Channel One, RT reported.

“Our partners, including American, kept reassuring us that they would ensure the separation of the so-called moderate opposition from the terrorists,” he added.

“We don’t want the repetition of the failures, including by the Obama administration, which had sworn and signed under its obligation to separate moderates from terrorists, but failed to do so. Now we are witnessing the same subtle desire, if I understand the situation correctly, to get al-Nusra off the hook,” the top diplomat stressed.

Moscow has repeatedly alerted the international community to the dangers of terrorist factions operating in and around Idlib, and that they are being supplied with weapons and munitions from abroad. For the past several weeks, the Russian Defense Ministry has been warning about the militants’ plans to stage a fake chemical attack in Idlib to frame the Syrian government.

The case of Syria’s Northwestern province remains an issue of “special concern” for Russia, Syria, and Turkey, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said earlier, commenting on a “warning” by US President Donald Trump. Leaders from Russia, Iran, and Turkey are scheduled to meet on Friday in Tehran to discuss the strategy for Idlib.

Lavrov has also said that the end goals of Russia Turkey and Iran in Syria may differ at some aspects, but the countries ultimately want the Syrian conflict to end, Sputnik reported.

The Russian foreign minister added that Moscow with its partners on the so-called Astana group of Syrian peace guarantors (Russia, Turkey and Iran) ultimately want put an end to the war in Syria and make sure that Syrian people could decide their fate without an outside interference.

White House denies Trump ordered to assassinate Assad

The White House has rejected the claims made by journalist Bob Woodward about U.S. President Donald Trump ordering his administration to plan the assassination of his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al-Assad.

Woodward alleged that Trump told his staff: “Let’s f****** kill him! Let’s go in. Let’s kill the f****** lot of them.”

“The contemptuous words about the President attributed to me in Woodward’s book were never uttered by me or in my presence,” the U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis said.

“While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility,” he added.

Furthermore, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley also dismissed these reports, saying that “I have not once ever heard the president talk about assassinating Assad.”

US Ambassador Nikki Haley denied on Tuesday that Mr Trump had ever planned to assassinate Mr Assad.

She told reporters at UN headquarters that she had been privy to conversations about the Syrian chemical weapons attacks, “and I have not once ever heard the president talk about assassinating Assad.”

Local sources in Raqqa reported on Thursday that the SDF has dispatched an unprecedented amount of military equipment to Raqqa city and the adjacent areas and declared curfew in the region.

Last month, the SDF gunmen opened fire at civilians in Raqqa that had demonstrated against the occupiers in Baq Rashid neighborhood.

The SDF kept fighters on alert in Baq Rashid and seized over ten civilian vehicles.

In the meantime, the Arabic-language al-Manar TV reported that three SDF militias were killed after a bomb planted by ISIL terrorists on the way of the SDF fighters went off in the village of Jadidah Baladiyah East of al-Karama in Eastern Raqqa.

A fresh wave of insecurity and tensions has covered Raqqa following the SDF measures against people and unknown attacks on them.

Driving the extremists out of Syria’s Idlib province should be the primary goal at the current stage of the Syrian peace process, Russian President Vladimir Putin said following a meeting with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts.

“Our common absolute priority lies in the total elimination of terrorists in Syria,” Putin said, adding that the Russian forces had recently helped to liberate the southwestern part of the war-torn country and that Idlib province has become the primary target now. “The presence [of militants] poses a direct threat to the … civilians in the whole region,” the president warned.

The Russian president went on to say that the three leaders discussed some “concrete steps” aimed at the gradual stabilization of the Idlib de-escalation zone that involve offers of peaceful reconciliation for those armed groups that are ready to engage in a dialogue. Putin expressed his hope that the militants “would have the wisdom” to lay down their arms and back down as he said that the three leaders called on all parties to the conflict to stop violence.

We assume that [the sides] will be able to reach an agreement and our call for ceasefire in Idlib would be heard,” Putin said, adding that Russia, Turkey and Iran have always sought to bring the conflicting parties together. At the same time, the Russian president also said that Moscow, Tehran and Ankara would continue to actively fight terrorist groups in Syria, which are not considered to be part of any ceasefire agreements.

The president hailed the fact that some armed opposition groups, which are active in Idlib, have joined the fight against terrorists as well. He said that such developments are “of utmost importance,” adding that the joint fight against extremists would contribute to building trust between the Syrian government and opposition, thus facilitating smoother reconciliation between them.

Meanwhile, the continued activities of extremists in Idlib have become a source of particular concern, Putin said, adding that the radical groups apparently enjoy some outside support.

“Militants from various groups manage to build drones there and they somehow obtain the spare parts and everything they need to create such UAVs,” the Russian leader said. He also once again said that Moscow has “irrefutable” evidence suggesting that the terrorist groups entrenched in the militant-controlled province are seeking to stage false flag attacks, using chemical weapons. Such actions serve the interests of some foreign actors, he added.

It is “unacceptable” that some actors “want to let the terrorists off the hook under the guise of protection of civilians” and “inflict damage upon the troops loyal to the Syrian government,” Putin said, commenting on the issue of potential false flag attacks involving the use of chemical weapons.

Apart from combating terrorists, the leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran also agreed to enhance their efforts aimed at promoting intra-Syrian dialogue and improving the humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged country. Moscow, Tehran and Ankara “assign an important role to the coordinated efforts aimed at improving the humanitarian situation in Syria as well as at rebuilding its economy and resolving acute social problems,” the president said as the three leaders called on the international community and the UN in particular to render more assistance to Syria by delivering humanitarian aid and taking part in the reconstruction efforts.

07.09.2018 - "Inevitable' Op: Why Russia, Iran, Turkey Need to Solve Differences Over Idlib
'Inevitable' Op: Why Russia, Iran, Turkey Need to Solve Differences Over Idlib

The leaders of Russia, Iran and Turkey held a trilateral meeting in Tehran on September 7. The upcoming operation aimed at liberating the province of Idlib, the last terrorist stronghold, became the summit's focus. Speaking to Sputnik, analysts shared their views on the prospects of the operation.

The Idlib issue has put the Astana participants to the test, Oytun Orhan, a specialist on the Middle East at the Center for Middle Eastern Strategic Studies (ORSAM), opined, speaking to Sputnik Turkey.

"Currently there is the necessity of interaction between Turkey and Russia which covers not only Syria, but also a number of other issues," Orhan underscored. "Therefore, it is not in their interests to jeopardize this interaction, especially in the context of the crisis in Turkish-American relations. Given this, we can expect that Turkey's concerns regarding the situation in Idlib will be taken into account."

According to the Turkish scholar, the Idlib operation is "inevitable." He suggested that on the southern and south-western fronts of the Idlib war theater, as well as in part of western Aleppo, substantial changes would take place allowing government forces to gradually restore control over the region. Under these circumstances, Ankara will most likely insist on the separation of radical groups from moderate ones in Idlib.

The struggle against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)* will likely come to the forefront of Ankara's activities in the region, he foresees, citing the fact that Turkish authorities have recently include HTS on the list of terrorist organizations.

Earlier, in 2017, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front,* merged with other terrorist groups to become Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

"That shows that Turkey will act against this organization together with other countries," he presumed.

Orhan noted that on the other hand, the fall of Idlib could deal a tremendous blow to the positions of the Syrian opposition, thus thwarting Turkey's political influence in the region.

Having captured Idlib, Damascus will not make any concessions with regard to a new constitution of Syria and the country's political system, the Turkish scholar opined, explaining that because of that, Turkey had insisted on a "limited operation in Idlib."

"Turkey insists on conducting a limited operation in Idlib, since in this case it will be able to control the flow of refugees [from the region]," he said. "Additionally, in this case the opposition will maintain control over a certain territory, which is also in the interests of Turkey. And, perhaps most importantly, Turkey's reluctance to conduct a full-scale operation is linked to its fears that after the liberation of Idlib, Syrian government forces will head towards Afrin and the region where Operation Euphrates Shield took place."

He noted that in case the parties fail to reach compromise, the crisis would escalate, prompting a new wave of refugees flooding Turkey and Europe. At the same time, the US and its Western allies could step in under the pretext of the humanitarian crisis and initiate strikes on Syria, which would further exacerbate the situation.

For his part, Fuad Eliko, the chairman of the Syrian Kurdish National Council (ENKS) and member of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, emphasized the necessity for Moscow, Ankara and Tehran to act jointly in Syria.

"Russia advocates striking at al-Nusra Front in Idlib and transferring control over the moderate opposition to Turkey," the politican said. "Turkey wants to be given time to gradually clear Idlib's territory from al-Nusra terrorists, as it is afraid of the influx of refugees into its territory in the event of a full-scale operation. Iran insists on the immediate start of the operation in Idlib."

Still, he believes that the parties will finally reach a compromise. Besides, the politician presumed that Turkey could play a significant role in expelling al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups from the region.

Previously, US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signaled their concerns regarding the upcoming operation. During a phone talk between Pompeo and his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, he called the forthcoming Syrian Arab Army's advance on Idlib "unacceptable."

For its part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stressed that the terrorist stronghold in Idlib destabilizes the situation in Syria
and undermines attempts to find a political resolution of the ongoing crisis.

Syria’s terror-infested Idlib province is a thorn that needs removing, a military expert told RT, adding that the Syrian Army is capable of both freeing the area from terrorists and keeping civilians safe.

The Idlib de-escalation zone has “served its purpose and has to be cleared out as soon as possible”, as it’s become a “source of destabilization and threats” that impedes further peace process in Syria, Mikhail Khodarenok, a retired colonel, who worked at the main operational directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, told RT.

'Thorn that Needs To Be Removed'
The region is controlled by various warring militant groups, including such terrorist organizations as the former Al Nusra Front (now known as Tahrir al-Sham). It poses considerable danger both to local civilians and other Syrian territories, as well as to the Russian forces stationed at the Khmeimim Air Base. The terrorists seek to derail the separation of extremist forces from other armed groups “in every possible way.”

At the same time, they also launch attacks against other Syrian regions using the Idlib facilities. In early August, Russian forces downed almost a dozen drones near Khmeimim, launched from the militant-held areas in Idlib within just a few days.

Earlier, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov referred to the province that is mostly controlled by an Al-Qaeda affiliate, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, as a “nest of terrorism” that remains an issue of “special concern” for Russia, Syria, and Turkey. He added that a “large group of terrorists had entrenched there,” undermining any attempts of diplomatic and political settlement.

Russia has also repeatedly warned about militants preparing a false-flag chemical weapons attack in the province. Moscow even provided the proof of the planned provocation to the UN and Organization for the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

“Idlib is a thorn that needs to be removed as soon as possible, otherwise advancing the peace process in Syria simply won’t work,” Khodarenok said.

'Disproportional Use of Force is Ruled Out'
Idlib is a fairly large and densely populated province, with a significant number of civilians living there, Khodarenok warned, while the number of various militants there, including their family members, might amount to some 50,000-60,000. The provincial capital of Idlib alone hosts up to 3 million people. Still, the Syrian Army supported by the Russian Air Forces could avoid significant civilian casualties as it already has a vast experience of fighting in the cities, the expert added.

“Generally, all the fighting in Syria has taken place either in urban areas or close by; almost no one fought in the desert parts of the country, which take up most of Syria’s territory,” the retired colonel said, adding that the Syrian Army and the Russian forces “will surely take all the necessary steps to prevent civilian deaths, so we can rule out disproportional use of force during such an operation.”

One of the possible tactics that Damascus and Moscow might use in this operation is the one they first used during the liberation of another big Syrian city – Aleppo – and was then used in Deir-ez-Zor and other heavily populated areas held by militants. It involves creating humanitarian corridors for civilians to flee the active combat zone.

The Syrian Army is also likely to rely on highly trained and experienced assault groups that have gone through years of fighting and took part in many major battles of the Syrian conflict. As circumstances require, such groups may include motorized infantry, tanks, armored fighting vehicles and engineer troops such as de-mining specialists, Khodarenok said.

If necessary, ground troops can be supported by artillery and Air Forces, which are expected to use precision-guided munitions such as guided bombs and missiles, thus drastically reducing the possibility of collateral damage, the expert said.

'Militants have No Option but To Surrender or Be Defeated'
The battle for Idlib is the final push in the prolonged Syrian conflict, which might eventually bring it to an end. That means that the armed groups, which are currently entrenched in the province would have only two options: to “lay down their arms” or to “be destroyed in battle,” Khodarenok told RT.

Any other option like the creation of another ‘de-escalation zone’ on the Syrian territory is not possible any more, the military expert said. He, however, admitted that some of the militants might be eventually transported from Syria to Turkey or Saudi Arabia if the governments of these countries agreed to accept them and reach relevant agreements with Damascus.

“If Turkey and Saudi Arabia refuse to take part in determining the militants’ fate, they will have no other choice but to be crushed on the battlefield” or “lay down their arms and surrender to the Syrian Army,” the retired colonel said. Ultimately, the eventual defeat of the militants in the Idlib province “would be only a matter of time.”

US plan to prevent fall of last terrorist nest in Syria, no concern for civilians – Russian UN envoy

Washington and its allies pursue their geopolitical interests under the guise of humanitarian concerns as they apparently try to prevent the destruction of the last terrorist enclave in Syria, the Russian envoy to the UN said.

The US and its allies have done virtually nothing to contribute to the real peace process in Idlib, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia said, adding that the US particularly did not deliver on its promise to separate the “moderate opposition” groups from the terrorist organizations.

“Instead, [they] are hatching yet another aggressive plan, which includes false flag attacks involving the use of chemical weapons,” the envoy said.

The Western states apparently “go out of their way to prevent the fall of the last major terrorist stronghold in Syria,” Nebenzia said, adding that such actions serve some narrow geopolitical interests rather than the declared need to protect civilians.

The hysterical campaign that has unfolded around the upcoming liberation of Idlib closely resembles the one that the Western officials and the media waged at the time when the Syrian troops backed by the Russian Air Forces were liberating Aleppo. “Those apocalyptic forecasts turned out to be unfounded,” Nebenzia said, referring to the Western hysteria about the Aleppo campaign.

Meanwhile, Raqqa was leveled to the ground as a result of the bombings of the US-led coalition,” he said, referring to another Syrian city, which was recaptured from the terrorists by the forces backed by the US and its allies, with the Western MSM mentioning little of its plight.

Terrorists in Syria's Idlib Active in Aggressive Way, Stage Attacks - Envoy

The freezing of the situation in Syria's Idlib de-escalation zone is unacceptable, according to Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya.

"Al-Nusra*… [is] striving to keep that territory under their control. For this reason, the freezing of the situation is not acceptable," Nebenzya told the Security Council.

Our Western partners do not want to accept the fall of the last terrorist enclave in Syria, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya stated.

Some 50,000 terrorists operate in the Syrian province of Idlib, the Russian Ambassador to the UN noted.

"In the Idlib de-escalation zone there are 40 to 45 armed groups, the overall number of which includes up to 50,000 people," Nebenzya said.

Terrorist groups in the Syrian province of Idlib are preparing offensives in neighboring areas, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya stressed.

"Terrorists in Idlib are acting in an aggressive way: they are taking hostage millions of civilians, they are staging attacks against neighboring territories. The ceasefire regime is being violated dozens of times every day," Nebenzya said.

The Syrian government earlier pledged to drive the remaining terrorists out of Idlib and has begun taking steps toward full-scale military operations in the territory.

According to Moscow, the terrorist enclave in Idlib is destabilizing the situation in Syria and threatens the work toward a political settlement of the conflict.

Russian officials have repeatedly warned that terrorists have been planning a staged chemical weapons attack in Idlib in order to provoke Western countries to retaliate against the Syrian government.

Jihadist rebels launch deadly attack on large Christian city in northern Hama

On Friday, the jihadist rebels in northern Hama launched a deadly attack on a densely populated town controlled by Syrian government.

According to a military source in northern Hama, the jihadist rebels fired several missiles towards the large Christian town of Mhardeh, which is located near the Idlib axis.

As a result of this attack, at least nine civilians were killed and another 20 more were seriously wounded.

Due to its proximity to the jihadist held towns in northern Hama, Mhardeh has been a prime target for groups like Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and thr Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The jihadist rebels launch this attack this evening in response to the large scale buildup of Syrian army troops in northwest Syria.

Breaking: Russian, Syrian forces unleash major assault across Hama, Idlib provinces

The Russian Air Force, alongside their Syrian counterparts, unleashed a massive assault across the northwestern region of Syria this morning.

Led by their Sukhoi jets, the Russian and Syrian air forces heavily targeted areas controlled by the jihadist rebels in the Hama and Idlib provinces; they would concentrate their efforts on the Turkestan Islamic Party’s bases and trenches.

Among the many areas targeted by the Russian Syrian air forces where the Jisr Al-Shughour and Al-Ghaab Plain of northwestern Syria.

According to a military source in western Syria, the Russian Syrian air forces launched more than 30 airstrikes over this rural region on Friday, hitting a number of jihadist targets near the Turkish border.

These airstrikes come as the Russian, Iranian, and Turkish governments meet in Tehran to discuss the Idlib situation this weekend.

As of now, the Syrian army still plans to launch their large-scale offensive in northwestern Syria; however, this could change if an agreement is made at the Tehran Summit.

Kind of a cynical title for the article I thought. The part I thought was lacking was the analysis for the U.S. reality check so to speak:

What the USA means: We’ve already acknowledged that Assad isn’t going anywhere and we are privately grateful to be working with Russia in order to support our mutual Israeli ally. However to create a bit of leverage for future negotiations and to get Bob Woodward’s book out of the headlines we might fire some missiles at non-targets in Syria and shout ‘mission accomplished’ afterwards”.

I think the eastern Euphrates area with the oil fields is possibly a big motivator for U.S. building so many bases in that region of Syria. We will see how "grateful" the U.S. really is soon enough I think. Also, the Golan Heights oil fields seem to be at least a one big attraction for Israel.

Just because Russian president Putin has been careful in trying to balance the players' interests in the region does not mean it is just a big Oscar show with known outcomes. It is not quite a "done deal" if you ask me.

I also found the article (most certainly the title) more than a little heavy on the drama, without question. At the same time, the C’s have said (to paraphrase) to watch the show, so I found this perspective noteworthy, though discernment must always be applied.;-)

I deleted a sarcastic meme I’d posted because it didn’t feel appropriate to the spirit of the Cass group. I was being a bit silly and thought better of it.

Hello, reading and being informed by my friends there, I write for a Lebanese institute. The finding of a war lost by the axis washinghton-tel aviv-saudi arabia in Syria, does not mean yet the end of the recreation, indeed if in Syria as well as in Iraq, daesh is dead as " State ", remains the problem of the American presence; the Zionist entity and the maintenance of the Saud are still relevant, in Iraq in the Basra region, there is an attempt to revolutionize the color to drive out the popular militias that are the counterpart of the Iraqi army; basically; it is Iraqi Hezbollah. there is a declared will to destroy the axis of the Resistance; that is to say: Iran-Iraq-Syria-Lebanon-Palestine, as I said to my colleagues present on the spot, which fully agree, as long as these 3 points mentioned above will not be settled the war can start again at any time, but this time the axis of the resistance has become a very well trained army and consists of advanced weapon.

You are correct in your opinion, Susy7 :-) - that war can start again at any time in Syria but there are some factors and conditions that need to be taken into consideration, that lessens the odds of another full scale war starting out in Syria - again.

One of the most comprehensive factors of determent - is Russia's involvement in the Syrian war, by the request and permission of President Assad and the Syrian Government. Russia, in turn, needed to get permission from it's own Government and Military advisors, before they preceded to honor Assad's request. All within International Law and UN Mandates - legally!

"the axis washinghton-tel aviv-saudi arabia in Syria" ... are foreign Invaders pursuing their own geopolitical interests and destabilizing a sovereign Country.

My referral to comprehensive factors - is that Russia did not walk into this Syrian War - blindly. In some ways, it might be said that Russia has changed the game rules, over the Pentagon's/NATO's conventional War Tactics. I'm not a War Historian but Putin's game seems to be "a well thought out - systematic Plan of counter measures and advancement tactics" that has been proven to be steps ahead of the terrorist and their well funded sponsors. Humanitarian Aid has been distributed to Syrians in the war zones, on a systematic schedule that has helped and saved thousands of lives. To my knowledge, this has never been attempted or practiced before during a full blown war? Where have you ever witnessed negotiations and agreements made with the invading parties (terrorist) to either lay down their arms peacefully or accept transfer to another location via buses - clearing pockets of terrorists in a general area and concentrating them in another designated area (to be monitored and stripped of their weapons)? On another level, there is heavy Diplomatic involvement and negotiations towards a peaceful resolve in Syria. This last step has never been practiced by Western standards. The Pentagon prefers the signing of "surrender documents" or Regime Coups to settle their proxy wars. Russia is rewriting History and turning the West on their heels. Other Countries, like Libya and Afghanistan, infested with terrorist, are now approaching and asking Russia to help intervene and send advisors.

In regards to Hezbollah, the Saudi's are contemplating starting a war in Lebanon - they are not satisfied with just bombing Yemen to the ground.

Thanks for Posting the video, Evster2012. :-) It was interesting to watch Erdogan "get hot" and squirm when Putin wouldn't budge to his demand on a "cease-fire". (Too funny!)

Sept. 9, 2018 - Erdogan Gets No Love From Putin on Idlib, Russia Determined to Smash Sultan's Terrorists
Erdogan Gets No Love From Putin on Idlib, Russia Determined to Smash Sultan's Terrorists

A critical summit between the presidents of Russia, Iran and Turkey to find common ground on Syria’s rebel-held province of Idlib descended into televised drama today, as Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan aired their differences before the cameras. On paper, the leaders reiterated pledges to seek a negotiated solution to Syria’s seven-year conflict, to preserve the country’s territorial unity, to eliminate al-Qaeda-linked terrorists and to assure the safe return of millions of displaced Syrians. But a regime attack on Idlib will likely move ahead despite Turkey’s appeals for more time to use carrot-and-stick diplomacy with the jihadis.

Even as the leaders assembled in Tehran, Syrian fighter jets pounded militant targets in the province, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group.

Turkey has 12 observation posts in Idlib in keeping with the provisions of the Astana process. The initiative was launched by Turkey, Iran and Russia last year to ease conditions for a cease-fire and eventual peace between the government and the rebels in designated “de-escalation zones.” In practice it has eased the regime’s bloody comeback in rebel-held territories such as Daraa and Ghouta, and now imminently in the last militant stronghold, Idlib, where the al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, dominates. Several thousand Turkish troops manning the observation points will likely find themselves in the crosshairs of the assault and tens of thousands of Syrians would likely flee toward Turkey.

Erdogan said with some 3.5 millions Syrian refugees on its hands, Turkey could not take in any more. “An attack on Idlib will result in disaster, massacre, tragedy,” he warned. The Turkish leader even recited a verse from celebrated Iranian poet Saadi: “If you have no sympathy for human pain, the name of human you cannot retain.”

But Turkey failed to convince fellow leaders to insert wording for a cease-fire in the summit’s final communiqué. Erdogan’s efforts to reverse this played out live with the leaders and their delegations assembled around a giant white table as the press cameras continued, inexplicably, to roll. A stony-faced Erdogan said the final statement ought to have made a reference to a “cease-fire” because it would bolster the Astana process, ease a solution and mark a victory for the summit.

Putin icily retorted, “The armed militants are not present at our table, are not taking part in our talks. The Turkish president is right, generally speaking. It would be nice [if they declared a cease-fire]. But we cannot speak on their behalf and [even less so on behalf of] Jabhat al-Nusra, IS terrorists, that they will stop their attacks, that they will stop using their drones.” Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani could be seen smiling beatifically as Erdogan responded, “We would be making a call on Jabhat al-Nusra, on HTS to lay down their arms.”

Analysts agree that the summit did not go well for Erdogan: Kerim Has, a Moscow-based analyst on Russian and Eurasian affairs, told Al-Monitor that the gathering revealed that a joint offensive carried out by Russia-backed regime forces and Iran-backed pro-regime militias “is very near.” The level of mutual trust between Turkey and Russia is “very low,” relations remain “fragile” and Idlib will “present new challenges” to them. Finally, it showed that Turkey needs to be ready for a fresh wave of refugees and that the threat of terrorism is no longer confined to Syria and will be felt “on its own soil, up close and present.” More broadly, Has observed,
“Disagreement over Idlib makes it unlikely that Russia and Turkey can agree on an extended presence of Turkish forces in Afrin, Jarablus and Azaz.”

Afrin is the mainly Kurdish enclave Turkish troops invaded with Russia’s blessings and rebel boots in March. A report from the Guardian’s Martin Chulov quoted a Kurdish leader as saying that a small number of the US-backed Kurdish Arab militia known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) — ostensibly Kurds — had made their way to join Syrian forces in the impending fight for Idlib. The quid pro quo would be regime support to drive Turkey and its rebel proxies out of Afrin. But without Russian buy-in, that would be a highly risky move. Turkey would likely retaliate against the regime and the Kurds, leading to a further and unpredictable conflagration.

Like Turkey, the United States is formally opposed to a regime assault on Idlib and Kurdish participation in it. But as Sam Heller, a senior analyst on non-state armed actors at the International Crisis Group, noted, “Despite US official rhetoric, the United States still only seems to have drawn a line at the use of chemical weapons, which — it's clear — would prompt US military action.” However, Heller added in emailed comments to Al-Monitor, “with the exception of a few stray statements, it seems not to be promising any military intervention to halt an offensive.” This suggests Turkey is increasingly isolated as it weighs its next move in Syria.

A Western official speaking on condition of anonymity said, “I don’t think the summit was ever supposed to be anything other than a stalling tactic that would distract Turkey and make it look bad.” The official added, “Putin has mastered that tactic for Syria."

I read an article on Fort Russ (or maybe it was Antiwar, I’ve read so many in the last day) from a former military spec ops officer that suggested “As goes Donbass, so goes Syria” which makes a strong case that we’ll likely see something happen in Donbass first-possibly by or on the 14th-that will cause such a response that effectively Russia will be faced with a war or two fronts.

September 10, 2018 - Can’t We Just Leave Syria Alone?
Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity

Published on Sep 10, 2018 (20.00 min.)

Good question. With Assad back in control of Idlib, hundreds of thousands of people have voluntarily returned to the city and are apparently enjoying peace and relative liberty. Clearly, Assad is not trying to gas them all and the U.S. and its coalition does not need to “liberate” them. As Dr. Paul asks, can’t we just leave them alone?

The U.S. fought him every step of the way. Each time the Syrian military approached another occupied city or province, Washington and its obedient allies issued the usual warnings that Assad was not liberating territory but was actually seeking to kill more of his own people. Remember Aleppo, where the U.S. claimed Assad was planning mass slaughter once he regained control? As usual, the neocons and the media were completely wrong. Even the UN has admitted that with Aleppo back in the hands of the Syrian government hundreds of thousands of Syrians have actually moved back. We are supposed to believe they willingly returned so that Assad could kill them?

The truth is Aleppo is being rebuilt. Christians celebrated Easter there this spring for the first time in years. There has been no slaughter once al Qaeda and ISIS’s hold was broken. Believe me, if there was a slaughter we would have heard about it in the media.

So now, with the Syrian military and its allies prepared to liberate the final Syrian province of Idlib, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo again warns the Syrian government against re-taking its own territory. He tweeted on Aug. 31: “The three million Syrians, who have already been forced out of their homes and are now in Idlib, will suffer from this aggression. Not good. The world is watching.”

Trump’s National Security Advisor, John Bolton, has also warned the Syrian government that the U.S. will attack if it uses gas in Idlib. Of course, that warning serves as an open invitation to rebels currently holding Idlib to set off another false flag and enjoy U.S. air support.

Bolton and Pompeo are painting Idlib as a peaceful province resisting the violence of an Assad who they claim just enjoys killing his own people. But who controls Idlib province?

Trump’s own special envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, Brett McGurk, said in Washington just last year that, “Idlib province is the largest al Qaeda safe-haven since 9/11, tied directly to Ayman al Zawahiri. This is a huge problem.”

Could someone please remind Pompeo and Bolton that al Qaeda are the bad guys? After six years of a foreign-backed regime-change operation in Syria, where hundreds of thousands have been killed and the country nearly fell into the hands of ISIS and al Qaeda, the Syrian government is on the verge of victory.

Assad is hardly a saint, but does anyone really think al Qaeda and ISIS are preferable? After all, how many Syrians fled the country when Assad was in charge versus when the US-backed “rebels” started taking over?

Americans should be outraged that Pompeo and Bolton are defending al Qaeda in Idlib. It’s time for the neocons to admit they lost. It is time to give Syria back to the Syrians. It is time to pull the U.S. troops from Syria. It is time to just leave Syria alone!

MEMORANDUM FOR: The President

FROM: Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity

Mr. President:

We are concerned that you may not have been adequately briefed on the upsurge of hostilities in northwestern Syria, where Syrian armed forces with Russian support have launched a full-out campaign to take back the al-Nusra/al-Qaeda/ISIS-infested province of Idlib. The Syrians will almost certainly succeed, as they did in late 2016 in Aleppo. As in Aleppo, it will mean unspeakable carnage, unless someone finally tells the insurgents theirs is a lost cause.

That someone is you. The Israelis, Saudis, and others who want unrest to endure are egging on the insurgents, assuring them that you, Mr. President, will use US forces to protect the insurgents in Idlib, and perhaps also rain hell down on Damascus. We believe that your senior advisers are encouraging the insurgents to think in those terms, and that your most senior aides are taking credit for your recent policy shift from troop withdrawal from Syria to indefinite war.

Big Difference This Time

Russian missile-armed naval and air units are now deployed in unprecedented numbers to engage those tempted to interfere with Syrian and Russian forces trying to clean out the terrorists from Idlib. We assume you have been briefed on that — at least to some extent. More important, we know that your advisers tend to be dangerously dismissive of Russian capabilities and intentions.

We do not want you to be surprised when the Russians start firing their missiles. The prospect of direct Russian-US hostilities in Syria is at an all-time high. We are not sure you realize that.

The situation is even more volatile because Kremlin leaders are not sure who is calling the shots in Washington. This is not the first time that President Putin has encountered such uncertainty (see brief Appendix below). This is, however, the first time that Russian forces have deployed in such numbers into the area, ready to do battle. The stakes are very high.

We hope that John Bolton has given you an accurate description of his acerbic talks with his Russian counterpart in Geneva a few weeks ago. In our view, it is a safe bet that the Kremlin is uncertain whether Bolton faithfully speaks in your stead, or speaks INSTEAD of you.

The best way to assure Mr. Putin that you are in control of US policy toward Syria would be for you to seek an early opportunity to speak out publicly, spelling out your intentions. If you wish wider war, Bolton has put you on the right path.

If you wish to cool things down, you may wish to consider what might be called a pre-emptive ceasefire. By that we mean a public commitment by the Presidents of the US and Russia to strengthen procedures to preclude an open clash between US and Russian armed forces. We believe that, in present circumstances, this kind of extraordinary step is now required to head off wider war.

Appendix:

Sept 12, 2016: The limited ceasefire goes into effect; provisions include separating the “moderate” rebels from the others. Secretary John Kerry had earlier claimed that he had “refined” ways to accomplish the separation, but it did not happen; provisions also included safe access for relief for Aleppo.

Sept 17, 2016: US Air Force bombs fixed Syrian Army positions killing between 64 and 84 Syrian army troops; about 100 others wounded — evidence enough to convince the Russians that the Pentagon was intent on scuttling meaningful cooperation with Russia.

Sept 26, 2016: We can assume that what Lavrov has told his boss in private is close to his uncharacteristically blunt words on Russian NTV on Sept. 26. (In public remarks bordering on the insubordinate, senior Pentagon officials a few days earlier had showed unusually open skepticism regarding key aspects of the Kerry-Lavrov agreement – like sharing intelligence with the Russians (a key provision of the deal approved by both Obama and Putin).

Here’s what Lavrov said on Sept 26:
My good friend John Kerry … is under fierce criticism from the US military machine. Despite the fact that, as always, [they] made assurances that the US Commander in Chief, President Barack Obama, supported him in his contacts with Russia (he confirmed that during his meeting with President Vladimir Putin), apparently the military does not really listen to the Commander in Chief.
Lavrov went beyond mere rhetoric. He also specifically criticized JCS Chairman Joseph Dunford for telling Congress that he opposed sharing intelligence with Russia, “after the agreements concluded on direct orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Barack Obama stipulated that they would share intelligence. … It is difficult to work with such partners. …”

Oct 27, 2016: Putin speaks at the Valdai International Discussion Club
At Valdai Russian President Putin spoke of the “feverish” state of international relations and lamented: “My personal agreements with the President of the United States have not produced results.” He complained about “people in Washington ready to do everything possible to prevent these agreements from being implemented in practice” and, referring to Syria, decried the lack of a “common front against terrorism after such lengthy negotiations, enormous effort, and difficult compromises.”

Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) is made up of former intelligence officers, diplomats, military officers and congressional staffers. The organization, founded in 2002, was among the first critics of Washington’s justifications for launching a war against Iraq. VIPS advocates a US foreign and national security policy based on genuine national interests rather than contrived threats promoted for largely political reasons.

September 10, 2018 - Turkey Warns Attack on Syria's Idlib would cause Humanitarian Disaster
Turkey warns attack on Syria's Idlib would cause humanitarian disaster

A Syrian government offensive in the country's northern region of Idlib would cause humanitarian and security risks for Turkey, Europe and beyond, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday in an article in the Wall Street Journal.

A Syrian government offensive in the country’s northern region of Idlib would cause humanitarian and security risks for Turkey, Europe and beyond, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday in an article in the Wall Street Journal.

Last week, Russian and Syrian warplanes resumed their bombing campaign in Idlib, the last rebel enclave in Syria, after weeks of quiet, in an apparent prelude to a full-scale offensive.

Erdogan failed to secure a pledge for a ceasefire from Russia and Iran, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main backers, at a trilateral summit in Tehran.

In the newspaper article, Erdogan called on the international community to take action, and warned that “the entire world stands to pay the price” otherwise.

“All members of the international community must understand their responsibilities as the assault on Idlib looms. The consequences of inaction are immense,” Erdogan said.

“A regime assault would also create serious humanitarian and security risks for Turkey, the rest of Europe and beyond.”

Idlib is the insurgents’ only remaining major stronghold and a government offensive could be the war’s last decisive battle.

Tehran and Moscow have helped Assad turn the course of the war against an array of opponents ranging from Western-backed rebels to Islamist militants. Turkey is a leading opposition supporter which has troops in the country and has erected 12 observation posts around Idlib.

At the summit in Tehran, Erdogan, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Hassan Rouhani agreed in a statement that there could be no military solution to the conflict and it could only end through a negotiated political process.

Erdogan had also called for a truce, but Putin said this would be pointless as it would not involve the Islamist militant groups that Russia deems terrorists, and Rouhani said Syria must regain control over all its territory.

On Tuesday, Erdogan said Russia and Iran were also responsible for stopping a humanitarian disaster in Idlib, and said the international community had to “throw its weight behind a political solution.”

Earlier, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar was reported as saying air and ground attacks on Idlib must stop immediately and a ceasefire must be established in the area.

September 10, 2018 - Trump Adviser Warns of Tougher Response if Syria uses Chemical Weapons Again
Trump adviser warns of tougher response if Syria uses chemical...

President Donald Trump's national security adviser said on Monday the United States, Britain and France had agreed that another use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government would result in a "much stronger response" compared to previous air strikes.

“We’ve tried to convey the message in recent days that if there’s a third use of chemical weapons, the response will be much stronger,” national security adviser John Bolton said while fielding questions after a policy speech.

“I can say we’ve been in consultation with the British and the French, who joined us in the second strike, and they also agree that another use of chemical weapons will result in a much stronger response,” Bolton said.

U.S. officials have said in recent days they have evidence that Syrian government forces are preparing chemical weapons ahead of a planned assault on a rebel-held enclave in Idlib in the northwestern part of the country.

Marine General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters late last week he was involved in a routine dialogue with the White House about military options should Syria ignore U.S. warnings against using chemical arms.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has massed his army and allied forces on the front lines in the northwest, and Russian planes have joined his bombardment of rebels there, in a prelude to a widely expected assault despite objections from Turkey.

Bolton, after a speech condemning the International Criminal Court, said the judicial body’s failure to act in response to earlier chemical weapons attacks was evidence that it was ineffectual in deterring war crimes.

He also dismissed claims that U.S. actions against Syria encouraged al Qaeda rebels to use chemical weapons and blame the attacks on the Damascus government.

The government of Russia and others have said that we are giving the authorization for al Qaeda to use chemical weapons and try and pin it on the government of Syria,” Bolton said on the eve of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. “That has to be, in the history of propaganda in the 20th and 21st centuries, one of the most outrageous claims that I can think of.”

Armenia is sending 100 soldiers to Syria as part of humanitarian mission

The Armenian Army is sending approximately 100 soldiers to Syria as part of a humanitarian mission, Armenian Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan stated on Wednesday, as quoted by Panarmenian.

“These are the humanitarian experts of the Armenian Armed Forces, including doctors, sappers, as well as personnel who will ensure their safety,” Tonoyan said.

Armenia has played an integral role in alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Syria, as their constant aid shipments have helped a large number of Syrians.

Both Syria and Armenia maintain close diplomatic and economic relations, with the latter refusing to cutoff ties to Damascus, despite pressure from the U.S. and other western states.

Russian Air Force shifts attention from Idlib to east Syria

The Russian Air Force has shifted their attention from the Idlib Governorate to the eastern region of Syria this week, as they can continue peace negotiations with Turkey and Iran.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Russian Air Force launched several airstrikes over the eastern region of Syria, today, targeting a number of hideouts belonging to the so-called Islamic State (ISIS).

Among the areas targeted by the Russian Air Force on Wednesday were the Al-Safa region and Badiya Al-Sham region of Deir Ezzor; these aforementioned areas currently have a large presence of Islamic State terrorists.

Prior to their heavy attack on e astern Syria this morning, the Russian Air Force had primarily concentrated their airstrikes on the Idlib and Hama governorates.

However, due to Turkey’s pleas, the Russian military has agreed to temporarily halt their attacks on the Idlib Governorate in favor of peace talks.

Turkey Amasses Forces in Idlib Ahead of Damascus Offensive

Turkey has sent convoys of troops to the province, despite its defense minister having said a military operation would drag the enclave toward disaster.

Turkey has sent convoys of troops to reinforce its presence in Syria's province of Idlib, the only remaining terrorist stronghold in the country, according to a report by Haaretz. The reinforcements come despite Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar's recent warnings against a military solution.

Akar said during a meeting with foreign ambassadors Wednesday that a military operation would drag the region toward a humanitarian catastrophe, Anadolu News agency reported.

"We are working with Russia, Iran and other allies to bring peace and stability and to stop a humanitarian tragedy," Akar said, according to Anadolu.

Haaretz cited activists of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, who reported earlier this week that a convoy of Turkish forces entered the province from the Kfar Lusin crossing in northern Idlib and then moved to some of the 12 Turkish observation points scattered throughout the province border.

Another monitoring group, the Central Station for Turkish Intervention, shot a video of armored vehicles and tanks driving by an Idlib road.

Both groups claimed the convoy was headed to two different observation points. Ankara has not yet commented on the reports.

The Turkish military has deployed 12 observation points that ring Idlib as a part of a de-escalation agreement reached with Russia and Iran last year, which aimed to freeze the lines of conflict, effectively making Ankara the protector of the province, Haaretz reports.

In recent weeks, the Syrian government has amassed forces to the south of Idlib and recently launched a massive bombing campaign against terrorist positions. However, the bombing has died down in the last 24 hours, which some view as a sign of an upcoming ground operation.

On September 11, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan published an article in the Wall Street Journal, in which he wrote that "the world would bear responsibility" for not acting to stop the Idlib offensive and the humanitarian catastrophe that is supposed to inevitably follow the military operation.

All members of the international community must understand their responsibilities as the assault on Idlib looms. The consequences of inaction are immense," Erdogan said. The United States, in a somewhat similar fashion, issued a warning to Russia Wednesday that Moscow would "bear responsibility" for the "humanitarian crisis" that would occur if Syrian forces attacked the terrorist enclave.

In August, Turkey's foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, also claimed that a military operation in Idlib would be a "disaster, not just for the Idlib region, but a disaster in terms of Syria's future," during a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

YPG wrecks havoc on Turkish-backed rebels in Afrin

The Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units continued their operations against the Turkish-backed rebels in the Afrin region this week.

According to the official media wing of the YPG, their troops killed two Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters inside the city-center of Afrin this past weekend.

“On September 9th, YPG carried a successful operation, targeting a military vehicle of the Sham Legion (Faylaq al-Sham) in the Sterk village, located near the city center of Afrin,” the YPG statement said. As a result, the vehicle itself was completely destroyed, while both of the FSA rebels nside of the car were killed. In addition, two AK-47 were seized,” it added.

Despite the ongoing curfew in Afrin, the YPG has managed to bypass the Turkish-backed rebels and carry out more attacks inside this region located in northwestern Aleppo.

12.09.2018 - Russian Special Envoy for Syria: Terrorists' Surrender Could Resolve Idlib Issue
Russian Special Envoy for Syria: Terrorists' Surrender Could Resolve Idlib Issue

While the Syrian authorities have managed to regain control over most of the country's territories following several years of fighting against terrorists and opposition groups, the Idlib de-escalation zone remains a stronghold of the insurgency.

"The situation [in Idlib] is quite tense, dangerous. We would like to once again ask the international community be very careful and balanced in its assessment in case of this possible provocation, which could serve as a basis for the Western coalition to carry out new missiles strikes on Syria," Russian special presidential envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said in Geneva on Tuesday.

"As you know, there were reports today that representatives of media outlets from several countries had come to Idlib area, and that the filming of fake videos showing alleged use of chemical weapons in Idlib area is ongoing, they [videos] will later be used as the proof of the Syrian government's crimes against civilians," the diplomat stressed.

Possible false flag provocations with the use of chemical weapons in Syria's province of Idlib will bring much harm not only to civilians but also to the political settlement process in the war torn country, Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria said.

"Unfortunately, it is beneficial for someone, but, as we believe, not only the civilian population will suffer. This will bring much harm to the political settlement process. We believe that the joint efforts of the international community should prevent such a scenario," Lavrentyev told reporters in Geneva.

Russian special presidential envoy for Syria also said Tuesday some Western states' claims about a humanitarian disaster in Syria's Idlib are premature.

"There is a lot of noise in Western media outlets about the catastrophic situation in Idlib. Some representatives of Western countries already say that this will be the biggest humanitarian disaster, and already predicting what has not happened yet. This is absolutely unacceptable," Lavrentyev told reporters.

Meanwhile, Alexander Lavrentyev believes that terrorists' surrender would be the best option for solving the situation in the Idlib province, which has for years been controlled by militants and terrorist groups. "It is impossible just to imagine that the Syrian government is living in peace with the terrorists. This is absolutely unacceptable for the international community, not only for Russia, Damascus, or Iran or Turkey… If they surrender, that would be the best decision," Lavrentyev told reporters in Geneva.

"When our presidents were meeting in Tehran, there was an appeal from them, and they called upon the terrorist groups to put down their weapons and to surrender, in order to prevent casualties also among civilians," Lavrentyev recalled. The delay of an anti-terrorist operation in Syria's Idlib will depend on the process of separation of moderate opposition from radicals in the province, Russian special presidential envoy for Syria stressed.

Everything will depend on to what extent the international community members could assist in the separation of moderate opposition from radicals in Idlib," Lavrentyev told a briefing in Geneva when asked to confirm whether the three guarantor states had agreed to postpone the anti-terrorist operation in Idlib at the recent summit in Tehran.

The Russian envoy added that the Nusra Front terrorist organization and other militant groups related to it were covering as civilians.

"One should act very carefully here, I think that troops of the three countries will be able to agree on a scheme and mechanism of the operation against terrorist organizations in the province," Lavrentyev stressed. "The most important thing is to prevent civilian casualties and suffering from the fighting," he noted.

Farsnews

Russian Foreign Ministry's Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that tensions are on the rise in Syria's Idlib province due to a high concentration of militants. The statement comes amid reports that the militants in Syria's Idlib province were preparing for the long-term defence of Idlib and an offensive on Aleppo.

"Tension in Syria and around it is increasing. The most difficult situation on the ground is in the province of Idlib, where tensions have escalated due to a high concentration of terrorists," Zakharova told a briefing, Sputnik reported.

The spokeswoman further noted that militants in Syria's Idlib province were preparing for a long-term defense and an offensive on Aleppo and Hama, stating that militants took decisive actions aimed to "centralize the management, prepare for long-term defense, eliminate leaders of opposition groups prone to peacemaking, and also elaborate options for offensives on the cities of Aleppo and Hama".

In addition, Zakharova said that preparations for a staged chemical attack in Syria's Idlib continued despite the fact that the plans of militants and White Helmets were uncovered.

"Despite the uncovering of plans by militants and representatives of White Helmets to stage the use of chemical weapons by government troops, preparation of the above-mentioned staged action continues inside the Idlib zone," Zakharova added.

According to the spokeswoman, Moscow was concerned about the attempts of the United States to prepare the international public opinion for a new aggression against Syria.

"Regarding the international political point of view, the most serious concern is using of a very serious range of opportunities by Washington: from statements by officials to comments by biased media, the goal seems to be the preparation of public opinion for a new aggression against Syria," Zakharova stressed.

Breaking: Syrian Army unleashes big assault across Hama-Idlib axis

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) unleashed a big assault across the Idlib-Hama axis this afternoon, following a rather quiet morning in northwest Syria.

Led by the Tiger Forces, the Syrian Arab Army began the attack by heavily targeting the Islamist rebels near the Masasneh Checkpoint.

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Army managed to eliminate an entire group of Jaysh Al-Izza fighters, including two snipers.

Following this attack, the Syrian Arab Army began targeting Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham’s trenches around the western axis of Tal Wast.

The Syrian Arab Army was able to destroy at least three trenches belonging to Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham before they shifted their attention to the Idlib Governorate.

Using surface-to-surface missiles, the Syrian Arab Army heavily shelled the town of Tamanah, hitting a number of jihadist installations in the process.

The Syrian Arab Army is now focusing most of their attack on the towns of Tamanah and Sukeek, which are both located in the southern part of the Idlib Governorate.

Heavy clashes were reported between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and civilians in Eastern Deir Ezzur.

Local sources in Eastern Deir Ezzur said on Thursday that the SDF forces fired at the residents of the town of al-Sajar, and wounded several people, adding that a number of them were also detained by the US-backed militants.

They noted that the incident happened after residents of the town attacked one of the SDF commanders, namely Damhat.

It was the second time in a week that residents of al-Sajar engaged in clashes with the SDF and were targeted by the SDF's fire.

In a relevant development on Tuesday, civilians in Southeastern Deir Ezzur raided the positions of the US-backed SDF, destroying their checkpoints. The SDF opened fire at the people in the village of al-Sajar in Southeastern Deir Ezzur, injuring seven villagers.

The villagers, later, set fire at the SDF-run al-Sijan oilfield near al-Sajar, destroying the terrorists' checkpoints.

In the meantime, a field source pointed to intensified tensions in the SDF-held regions in Deir Ezzur, adding that two SDF militias were killed in a bomb blast near al-Tanak oilfield in Southeastern Deir Ezzur.

Wed Sep 12, 2018 - US Setting up More Military Bases in Hasaka in Northeastern Syria
Farsnews

The US Forces have started setting up two more military bases in Qamishli region in Hasaka province amid tensions between civilians and the Kurds, an Arab media outlet reported on Wednesday.

The Arabic-language al-Manar news website reported that the US-led coalition has resumed building two more military bases in the village of Jam'aya East of the town of Qamishli as well as areas West of the town.

It further said that the US military has set up a base at the Eastern entrance of the town Qamishli and also established a permanent base in the small town of Himo at the Western entrance of the town.

The website reminded that a sum of 13 Syrian soldiers were killed in an ambush operation by the Kurdish militias in Qamishli recently.

On Tuesday, the Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper quoted former media advisor of the Kurdish-led People's Protection Units (YPG) in Afrin Rizan Haddou as saying that the US troops were behind the Kurdish security forces' ambush on the Syrian army forces in Qamishli which killed 13.

He added that the incident was a plotted ambush operation, saying that the presence of the US forces in Qamishli and Hasaka does not benefit the Kurds.

Haddou described the US deployment in Syria as illegal, and said when the Americans were not stationed in the region, the Syrian army forces and Kurdish fighters were present in Afrin and Northern and Eastern Aleppo with no clashes.

There was an article published on a Lebanese news site yesterday, Sept 13, 2018, stating that Russia was able to recover 22 tons of gold and 3 billion US dollars from a convoy of takfiri fighters headed to Turkey from Idlib, with support of the Turkish Army. www.addiyar.com/article/1602656-الطيران-الحربي-الروسي-يمنع-نقل-22-طن-ذهب-ذهب-وثلاث-مليارات-دولار-طائرات-سوخوي-35

I was unable to find a decent translation that made sense, but it basically says that Russia, working with the Belgium Agency that tracks terrorists movements, were able to intercept the convoy and recover the gold, stolen over the past 7 years from Syrian citizens and jewelry shops. Russian Sukhoi 35 fighter jets bombed a perimeter around the convoy, then sent teams of helicopters to gain control of the cache. The Turkish Army did not intervene. Russia then secured and transported the loot to their airbase, where they will keep it until transporting it to the Central Bank in Damascus, giving a much needed financial boost for reconstruction of Syrian infrastructure.

I've been unable to find this story published anywhere else, but if true, Viva la Putin for returning this to the Syrians! Somebody(s), somewhere is really ticked off.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday amid rising international concern over a looming Syrian government offensive aimed at liberating the Idlib province from terrorists.

“President Erdogan will meet with Mr Putin on Monday,” Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told a televised press conference. The meeting will take place in the Russian resort city of Sochi, a senior Turkish official told AFP news agency

Cavusoglu also said Turkey was ready to cooperate with anyone in the fight against terror groups in Syria, but criticized the Syrian government offensive aimed at liberating Idlib.

“We are ready to cooperate with everyone in the fight against terror groups but the killing of civilians, women and children under the guise of fighting against terror is not correct,” he said. “We cannot bring peace that way.”

Russian Air Force unleashes massive attack in eastern Syria

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:45 P.M.) – The Russian Air Force unleashed a massive assault in eastern Syria, tonight, a military source told Al-Masdar News.

According to the source, at least five Russian warplanes hammered the Islamic State’s (ISIS) positions in the Badiya Al-Sham region of Deir Ezzor and Al-Safa Hills of Al-Sweida.

The Russian airstrikes were launched in coordination with the Syrian Arab Army’s renewed offensives in both the Badiya Al-Sham and Al-Safa Hills.

Earlier today, a military source told Al-Masdar that the Russian Air Force had shifted their attention from the Idlib Governorate to eastern Syria.

This move comes as the Russian and Turkish governments attempt to achieve a peaceful settlement on the fate of the Idlib Governorate.

Lavrov disputes claims of imminent offensive in Idlib

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that reports of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) ramping up for an offensive in Idlib with the support of Russian troops is an “unscrupulous representation of facts.” He made the statement during a plenary meeting alongside top German and Russian officials in Berlin on Friday.

“What is being passed for an offensive by the Syrian Arab Army with the support of Russian troops is an unscrupulous representation of the facts,” Lavrov said.

According to the Russian Foreign Minister, the Syrian and Russian troops “only react to the forays coming from the Idlib area.”

He went on to say that “the fact that they are just people who have settled in Idlib, like in a fortress, and want a truce – it’s not true. From there they actively carry out military operations, using the support they somehow receive from abroad.”

During his visit to Berlin, Lavrov is expected to meet with his German counterpart Heiko Maas.

Russia’s top diplomat will also take part in the closing ceremony of the Russo-German cross-cultural year.

Syrian Army has no offensive planned for Idlib city

The Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) upcoming offensive in the Idlib Governorate will be limited to only certain parts of the province, a military source in Damascus told Al-Masdar News this weekend.

According to the source, the Syrian Army has offensives planned in northern Latakia, northern Hama, southeast Idlib, and southwest Idlib.

The source said that the offensives in Idlib will be limited to the Al-Ghaab Plain (SW Idlib), Jisr Al-Shughour (SW Idlib), and Abu Dhuhour area (SE Idlib).

He would add that the Syrian Army may push towards the outskirts of Saraqib and Ma’arat Nu’man, but this is still being discussed among the commanders of the Syrian Army and Russian military.

There has been much speculation recently that the Syrian Army would attempt to capture the entire Idlib Governorate; however, the military source said the army has not made these plans.

It appears that the main objective of these offensives is to seal the entire Idlib Governorare border with the Hama and Latakia governorates.

For Russia, retaking Jisr Al-Shughour is their primary objective, as it is the main launching point for the jihadist missiles and drones on the Hmeymim Airbase in southwest Latakia.

Russia vows to wipe out terrorist-run drone assembly workshops in Idlib

Russia has information where the terrorists assemble drones in Idlib and it will be eliminating these underground workshops, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting of the German-Russian forum on Friday.

“We have intelligence information where drones are assembled in Idlib from components smuggled there,” he said. “As soon as we get such information, we will be eliminating such underground workshops that make lethal weapons.”

“What some describe as the beginning of a Russia-supported offensive by the Syrian army is malicious distortion of facts. Both the Syrian forces and we merely react to hit-and-run raids from Idlib,” Lavrov said. “It is very hard to detect drones with ordinary air defense weapons. Many of them are made of wood and cannot be seen on radar screens.”

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on September 5 that two Russian frontline bombers Sukhoi-34 wiped out a Jabhat al-Nusra (outlawed in Russia) workshop in Idlib, where militants assembled attack drones and kept in store ammunition for them.

In the early hours of September 4, air defense systems of the Hmeimim air base shot down two drones the militants hand launched. Both drones were eliminated far away from the base. Over the past month 47 drones have been shot down or neutralized in the area of the Russian base.

14.09.2018 - Congresswoman Accuses Trump, Pence of Shielding Al-Qaeda in Idlib
Congresswoman Accuses Trump, Pence of Shielding Al-Qaeda in Idlib

Speaking on the House floor on September 13, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard accused the Trump administration of protecting al-Qaeda terrorists in Idlib. According to the congresswoman, this amounts to the betrayal of the American people and victims of al-Qaeda's 9/11 attacks in the US.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) called out President Donald Trump and Vice President Pence for allegedly protecting al-Qaeda* in Idlib, Syria, while speaking in the House on September 13.

"Two days ago, President Trump and Vice President Pence delivered solemn speeches about the attacks on 9/11, talking about how much they care about the victims of al-Qaeda's attack on our country. But, they are now standing up to protect the 20,000 to 40,000 al-Qaeda and other jihadist forces in Syria, and threatening Russia, Syria, and Iran, with military force if they dare attack these terrorists," the congresswoman stressed.

Gabbard qualified the Trump administration's handling of the Idlib problem as nothing short of "betrayal of the American people" and most notably, "the victims of al-Qaeda's attack on 9/11 and their families."

"For the president, who is commander in chief, to act as the protective big brother of al-Qaeda and other jihadists must be condemned by every member of Congress," she emphasized.

While Damascus is preparing to launch an advance on Idlib, the last terrorist stronghold in Syria, which accommodates, according to some estimates, up to 70,000 jihadi militants, Washington continues to issue threats against Syrian government forces and their allies trying to pressure them into abandoning the operation.

In late August, National Security Adviser John Bolton expressed suspicions that the Assad government could resort to the use of chemical arms in Idlib and threatened Damascus with a "strong" response.

The Syrian government has repeatedly pointed to the fact that it destroyed its chemical weapon stockpiles as well as chemical weapon production facilities between September 2013 and August 2014 under the supervision of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which was verified by the OPCW in January 2016.

Commenting on the upcoming offensive on the terrorist-held province, President Trump tweeted on September 3 that "President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib province."

"The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don't let that happen!" he claimed.

On September 12, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley groundlessly blamed Russian, Iran and Syria of what she called a plan to "use" chemical arms in Syria.

"What we told, you know, the Syrians, the Russians and the Iranians was, well, twice we have warned you not to use chemical weapons; twice you have used it, and twice President Trump has acted. Don't test us again," Haley said in an interview with Fox News, referring to chemical incidents in Khan Sheikhoun and Douma and subsequent missile strikes against Syrian government forces by the US and its allies.

However, no evidence has been presented so far to confirm the involvement of Damascus and its allies in the incidents so far. Likewise, there has been no proof presented backing the claim that the Syrian government is going use poisonous substances in the region.
