server Issues / Can't access SOTT

I feel a little worried about some physical reactions described here - Loreta I hope you did not have a panic attack, and found something constructive and relaxing to do with your time!

I have been seeing the Asus login screen since this morning too, although I have had a few of these other errors which were solved by refreshing the page or returning to the main page.

If it is a result of malicious action, it seems almost a positive thing in some respects - it simply encourages the community to network whilst unable to view current events, and perks up attention to what this may be potentially masking.

Interesting breaking news:

CNN Breaking News

Time Warner Cable, one of the nation's largest cable and broadband providers, suffered a nationwide Internet outage early today, sparking new complaints about the company's service. Time Warner Cable said the outage occurred at 4:30 a.m. ET "during our routine network maintenance."

"An issue with our Internet backbone created disruption with our Internet and On Demand services," the company said in a statement.

"As of 6 a.m. ET, services were largely restored as updates continue to bring all customers back online," the company added.

Probably unrelated, but interesting all the same...

There is nothing like losing SOTT for a while to remind us all how much we value it and all the work the editors and support team provides.

Good point shellycheval! This is a very good reminder for us!

Thanks Scottie for your effort!!

Thanks for your concern, Soluna. I feel now sad for what happened for SOTT but seeing the others "reactions" here, I feel part of something very huge and big, maybe a passion, a fantastic group. This is something that can fill our hearts. It is very beautiful, I think! :D

Good catch! It is very interesting.
I hope that SOTT be online as soon as possible. Thanks for all your dedication, Mr. Scott!.

Network Man at the hosting company needs info from the server that we obviously can't provide because the server is down (???), but fortunately the "standard" techie has offered to get it for us. So, we wait more...

In the meantime, we've got another server on the way. One way or another, SOTT will not be down forever.

I was thinking what Sott will be missing in the news during the outtage. I heard this on NPR radio today:

Ukraine has accused Russia of trying to open a new front in the war between the government and pro-Moscow separatists in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine says its troops are involved in heavy fighting with an armored force that it says entered Ukrainian territory. Kiev has also released video of what it says is a group of captured Russian soldiers. Russia says the soldiers might have crossed the border inadvertently.

from _http://www.npr.org/2014/08/26/343484313/kiev-claims-russia-has-sights-set-on-new-eastern-ukrainian-city

Stirring more trouble and war-mongering?

At least I watched a couple of documentaries on Donbass and Putin that I had on the back burner. Still, life is not the same.

Thanks for working so hard Mr. Scott.

Ditto.

:knitting:

Agreed, Gaby what documentaries did you see?

Good to hear Mr Scott- life is not the same with the Lighthouse (SoTT) down. Thank goodness for the forum :)

This was very interesting.

We believe we have resolved the issue with the system. You should now be able
to login without anymore issues.

m asked what the problem was...

FDC said:
IP theft of other client. We are dealing with them accordingly.

m then replied:

In all likelihood, this was a deliberate attack on us. That's my perspective as strong possibility because why else hijack someone's IP knowing full well what result would be? I mean anyone familiar with even rudimentary TCP/IP networking knows that 2 machines on the same network using the same IP either results in machines becoming unavailable or one machine hijacking the traffic of another machine. And this isn't the first time we've had attacks against the site in various forms.

FDC said:
The offender is being dealt with as per our TOS. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In short, our server was never hacked, but our IP was "stolen". It is of course possible to do, but obviously the "client" in question is smarter than the hosting company.

The really frustrating part was trying to get their support to simply listen to what we were saying. They wanted to wipe the server and start over when it was fairly clear to us from the beginning that this wasn't a case of our server being compromised - at least not in the way they were suggesting.

Well, we've got a solution for that problem, too!
