The Artchemical Matter

Thank you JohnnyRadar! Hopefully my current CS2/CS4 illiteracy doesn't last longer than 30 days! Well I guess I really have two shots at it so surely 60 days is long enough for my little pea brain! ;D

edit: Unfortunately, my computer operates at 1.60 GHz and only has 496 MB RAM with 4.46 GB of free space (It's about 5 years old). I can probably free up enough disk space required for the 24.3 GB installation (Yes I've probably accumulated that amount "junk" over the years on this thing :O ). However, the RAM requirement is 2 GB so I'm guessing I will definitely have to purchase some more RAM in order for it to work properly? In addition, the software requires a processor of at least 2 GHz. Is a 2 GHz or faster processor an absolute necessity or more of a recommendation? I'm starting to think that maybe I should just get a new computer! :(

The more I read about the product the more I realize that it might be better if I were to purchase some manual on how to use it prior to downloading it. Do you have any suggestions on what book would be best for someone wanting to learn the basics?

well, there's a couple things you could do. for starters, your machine is definitely not up to the task of running Adobe CS4, but if you're going to go the route of getting a new computer just to use this software, then yes you'd want to read up on it a bit :) but don't bother dropping the money on a book (unless you really want to) ... all you need to start is planet photoshop (_http://www.planetphotoshop.com/) it's got tutorials (many of them), links to other resources, and a forum...

if you want to go the free route to get started in doing this kind of thing, i would recommend Gimp (Gnu Image Manipulation Program). it's open-source and has many of the same basic features as Photoshop, including layering, channels, painting tools, editable text layers, etc... it also imports existing .psd (Photoshop) files to the best of its ability, so you could still take a gander at the tutorial files from planet photoshop.

here's where to download:

Windows: _http://www.gimp.org/windows/
Mac: _http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/
Unix Systems: _http://www.gimp.org/unix/

for specific Gimp tutorials, their own site has a lot of good ones: _http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

hope that helps!

Thank you that really helps! Actually I've been thinking about getting a new computer for a little while now but just haven't gotten around to actually doing it. My mother is somewhat of an artist herself and I've been fortunate enough to have received at least a small snippet of her artistic genes. To be honest, it's been a while since I've drawn/painted anything. Thus, I think doing this will be a great way to connect to my creative side once again and learn something new in the process! Hopefully I'll eventually be able to muster up something that is worthy of The Artchemical Matter. Thanks once again.

Just added another image in our art blog! It is called "Bush's Presidential Collection"...
I hope you enjoy it. ;)

Thank you all!

I updated that last image of mine by removing the "quote" and the text spoken by Bush, as it seemed to me a little too "harsh".
Instead i added a more "subtle" and small visual clue, a particular kind of "black hat"... ;)

Thank you!

Hello everyone,

I just updated our art blog -after quite some time...- with my latest picture called "They Live: George Bush". Obviously i was inspired by the movie "They Live", as i really like this one... ;)
For my next pic, Obama is going to get the same "treat", as this one with Bush was more like a "proof of concept" picture for testing the 3D skull i created, which you see over-imposed on his original picture.
Anyway..., i hope you enjoy it!
Take care all of you.

:)
