The last time the Sierra Nevada saw such a significant late summer snowpack was over a decade ago, in 2011, when late spring storms combined with intense snowfall throughout the season contributed to a similar late-summer snow accumulation. Since then, there have been only two other years, 2017 and 2019, when any snowpack was documented in July.

While these measurements were taken ten days ago, on July 21st, it's highly likely that the snowpack has decreased significantly since then. Nonetheless, a snowpack that remains 1,000% of normal this late into July is still impressive.

The prolonged presence of so much snow at higher elevations continues to have both positive and negative impacts. High-alpine hiking and other summer activities are affected, while skiing conditions remain fantastic. In fact, Mammoth Mountain remains open for skiing and riding through August 6, boasting a 36″ base at The Summit and a 12″ base at the Main Lodge.

If you take only the province of BC (and each province would be similar), by count, the Ministry of Forests have close to 250 weather stations representing every quadrant of the province, all laid out to very strict standard (with some airports it is simply a joke - nor a good representation). The Ministry of Transportation adds another 200 weather stations. The US would likely dwarf these numbers.

Not saying this data is not all used as a factor in the climate picture (it would be inconvenient to do so), yet it is likely selective or just used for forest indices, transportation corridors and corporate resources.

If one looks at the 450 stations above, these are included in "6713 stations available" in BC alone.

Well, it was 10 C (50 F) this morning in SW France, moving toward the middle of AUGUST, the hottest month of the year. Yesterday's high was only 26 C (79 F) and today it is supposed to be a little less than that.

Yes, we have had a dozen or so scattered days when it got quite warm, but the overall trend has been cool and cloudy/rainy all summer long thus far. I highly recommend that people get a remote weather station and keep a weather journal as I have for the past few years. It's quite revealing to see what I actually record compared to the hype and scare tactics.

If the tendency of the past few months holds, when winter comes, it might be a real shock to most people. I wouldn't be surprised if this winter is the onset of the Ice Age.
