On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, a move that has been severely criticized by many other countries. At the same time, the president expressed readiness to renegotiate the deal under terms that would be "fair to the United States."
The Paris Agreement on climate change was adopted in December 2015 at the 21st UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) and was signed by 194 countries and ratified by 143. The deal aims to limit average global temperatures to less than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with parties to the deal agreeing to cut their emissions in accordance with the proposed plan.

President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Accords on climate change put the real interests of the United States and the American people first, former adviser to Senate Republican leaders Jim Jatras told Sputnik.
Trump’s pulling out of the Paris climate agreement was perhaps the most eloquent way he could have shown the world he’s serious about America First," Jatras stated.
Trump’s many critics like German Chancellor Angela Merkel viewed reducing carbon emissions and trying to prevent climate change not as a rational choice of policies but as a quasi-religious crusade or act of faith, Jatras observed.
"Let’s keep in mind that for [Trump’s] detractors abroad like Angela Merkel… to the carbon cultists in America, man-made climate change is not just a political opinion or even a scientific conclusion. It’s a deep, sincerely held item of faith," he said.
Trump’s pulling out of the Paris commitments pursued by his predecessor Barack Obama would shock and offend European leaders in the 28-naiton European Union and in NATO and would strengthen the forces leading to the dissolution of both institutions, Jatras predicted.
"To the extent it convinces the Europeans that they don’t share the same ‘values’ as America and it hastens the demise of NATO — good. I’m sure the Poles will be thrilled to sign up for Merkel’s German-led European army," he said.
Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Accords set a precedent that could be followed by other major nations too, Jatras remarked.
Trump‘s action also served notice on other nations that he was serious about being prepared to face international anger and criticism for insisting that previous agreements and deals damaging to US interests be scrapped or renegotiated, Jatras pointed out.
"Trump’s action also signals possible willingness to start playing hardball on renegotiating bad trade agreements. Ottawa, Mexico City and Seoul should take note," he said.
Within the United States, anger at Trump’s move might even serve to distract his political enemies from their baseless accusations about his alleged collusion with Russia during the 2016 presidential election campaign, Jatras suggested.

Obama never used the word "treaty" in describing the 195-nation Paris agreement, because the US Constitution requires all treaties to be confirmed by a two-thirds vote in the Senate.
"The left's anger about the Paris climate agreement should be directed at President Obama," Corker wrote in the statement via Twitter. "Unlike France and Germany, President Obama purposely chose not to have the Paris agreement ratified by the Senate."
If the Paris climate deal was so crucial to the future of the world, then Obama should have been willing to ratify it as a treaty, Corker noted.

Billionaire philanthropist and businessman Michael Bloomberg is defying President Trump’s decision to exit the Paris climate change agreement, saying he is rallying a bipartisan coalition of states, cities and business leaders to meet the climate pact’s targets even as the president rescinds the nation’s commitment to it.
“Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement,” Bloomberg said on Thursday. “Just the opposite — we are forging ahead. Mayors, governors, and business leaders from both political parties are signing on to to a statement of support that we will submit to the U.N. — and together, we will reach the emission reduction goals the United States made in Paris in 2015.”
Bloomberg’s philanthropic groups, in partnership with others, is also making a $15 million contribution to fund the U.N.’s climate secretariat, which will lose money under Trump. “Americans will honor and fulfill the Paris Agreement by leading from the bottom up — and there isn’t anything Washington can do to stop us,” Bloomberg said.
Not surprisingly, Bloomberg’s ‘coalition’ is comprised of the snowflake states of California, New York and Washington…which should result in people moving out of those states even faster than they already are.
Bloomberg made the announcement as California, New York and Washington are forming a pact to enact policies to help meet the emission reduction targets called for under the Paris Agreement.
The Democratic governors’ new agreement would seek to meet the same goal of reducing emissions 26 to 28 percent from 2005 levels as the U.S. committed to under the Paris deal. Details on individual state contributions are still to be worked out.
Finally, because Bloomberg seems to live in an alternative universe where Americans consider global climate trends among their key voting priorities, we would remind him that those same Americans just elected a President who vowed repeatedly in 2016 to withdraw from the Paris climate deal and once had this to say about global warming:
“The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.”
So, while this may be a priority for you Mr. Bloomberg, a man who undoubtedly flies all over the world on a fleet of private jets, it’s probably safe to say that the majority of Americans, especially those living outside the safe spaces of New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, either don’t agree with you on climate change or simply don’t care.

Government actions to counter “carbon pollution” have raised the cost of fuel, electricity and food by an average of $1000 per year for an average American family of four. If that family of four would only open their Internet browsers and see that the Antarctic Sea is at an all time high and sea levels are rising at an “alarming” rate of around 6 inches per century, they would feel outraged that they’re being taken advantage of, at least one would hope.
