Trump era: Fascist dawn, or road to liberation?

It is scary in the sense that civil courts would possibly be replaced by military court-martial process and military tribunals. If so I pray it is a temporary necessity.

Since 911 and the Bush administration declared the United States in a "State of Emergency", we have officially come under Military Tribunal. Recently, Trump extended that State of Emergency, along with beefing up security and man power at Gitmo and other high security Military prisons.

If you think of it, someone like HRC and former President's and heads of Government positions who have committed crimes of treason and gross negligence of Duty, by our Constitutional Law are to be brought before a Military Court for trial and possible sentencing. The Nuremberg Court after WW2 was a Tribunal Military Court. High treason is not a Civil matter but comes under the direction of Military protocol and Constitutional Law of the United States.

I have been aware of the "Presidential Directives" for many years now while I was working for the PA state government. I noticed that in tandem with FEMA Pennsylvania has a parallel PEMA. I read through many of the directives and realized there are no "civil rights" when it comes to declaring a state of emergency. They constantly emphasize COG (Continuity of Government) and even in state government they were using the term "governance" instead of government. Many of our staff were sent for training to comply with international "governance" standards.

If you want to find out more about Presidential Directives and Where to Find Them keep in mind not all of them are available to the public.

Trump has made many of them and some of his latest ones can be found at Presidential Actions.

One that seems very pernicious to me is Notice Regarding the Continuation of the National Emergency with Respect to Iran made on March 12, 2018.

Actions and policies of the Government of Iran, including its development of ballistic missiles, support for international terrorism, and human rights abuses continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.

For this reason, the national emergency declared on March 15, 1995, must continue in effect beyond March 15, 2018. Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency with respect to Iran declared in Executive Order 12957. The emergency declared by Executive Order 12957 constitutes an emergency separate from that declared on November 14, 1979, by Executive Order 12170, in connection with the hostage crisis. This renewal, therefore, is distinct from the emergency renewal of November 2017.

This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress.

I think c.a may have a reasonable posture to take:

Published one month and a half before the attack in Salisbury, Amy Knight’s book presents what was to become MI5’s thesis. The author herself maintains that she has not the slightest proof of what she is claiming.

At the request of President of the House of Commons Interior Committee Yvette Cooper, British Secretary for the Interior Amber Rudd announced that MI5 (Military Interior Secret Services ) is going to re-open 14 enquiries into deaths which, according to US sources, were ordered by the Kremlin.

the British government adopted the theories of Professor Amy Knight. On 22 January 2018, this US Sovietologist published a very strange book - Orders to Kill - the Putin régime and political murder. The author, who is « the » specialist on the ex-KGB, attempts to demonstrate that Vladimir Putin is a serial killer responsible for dozens of political assassinations, from the terrorist attacks in Moscow in 1999 to the attack on the Boston Marathon in 2013, by way of the execution of Alexandre Litvinenko in London in 2006 or that of Boris Nemtsov in Moscow in 2015. However, she admits herself that there is absolutely no proof of her accusations.

Just an impression but British Professor Amy Knight's published book "Orders to Kill - the Putin régime and political murder" sounds like a play-off - on the publication of British Ex-Spy Christopher Steele dossier, that claimed to report on Trump’s entanglements in Russia and the Golden Showers spiel of unverified allegations? While Steele's wild allegations were to tarnish Trump, Knight's accusations are meant to smear Putin. It seems, both publications were complied to be used as Political tools by their opponents?

The UK agency has released booklet amid the ongoing anti-Russian hysteria over the alleged poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal. According to it, the danger of being involved in espionage awaits travelers behind every corner, when they are visiting Russia or China.

MI5 Tips Against 'Honey Traps' For Businessmen Visiting Russia 25.03.2018
https://sputniknews.com/europe/201803251062888400-honeytraps-uk-businessmen-russia/

Visiting Russia (or China) is not an easy trip — spies have set up their webs around every lucrative entertainment corner and are waiting for their prey, according to the Smart Traveler booklet, issued for UK businessmen by the British MI5 agency, reports Daily Mail. Those possessing sensitive information are in the high risk zone, according to the paper.

The booklet warns such people against falling for the most common tourist "sins" such as gambling, substance use, excessive drinking and, as everyone still remembers the glorious Anna Chapman, for a hot Russian date. These honey traps could make British citizens vulnerable to blackmail and may result in vital information be stolen and reputational damage to both the UK and the company the person is representing.

The brochure also reminds readers about such commonly known practices as changing passwords, avoiding public Wi-Fi networks, avoiding sensitive conversation in public places (even if you believe others do not understand English) and publishing information about your location on social networks.

The paper was published amid ongoing anti-Russian hysteria, recently fueled by the alleged poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal for which London blames Moscow without having any shred of evidence. Last year the Danish Defense Intelligence Service warned its soldiers and their NATO colleagues, who were about to be deployed in Estonia, of the possible use of "female operatives," better known as "honey traps" by Russians. According to the document, Moscow might use such method in order to discredit their presence in the country.

US President Donald Trump’s incoming hawkish National Security Adviser John Bolton is reportedly planning a massive dismissal of staff at the National Security Council, aiming to remove dozens of White House officials.

Report: Bolton Plans to Fire Dozens of White House Officials Sun Mar 25, 2018
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970105000797

Bolton is preparing to “clean house” and remove nearly all of the political appointees brought in by his predecessor H.R. McMaster, sources aware of the changes told the Foreign Policy magazine.

McMaster had replaced Michael Flynn in February 2017 after he was forced to resign over contacts he had with the Russian government during Trump's presidential transition.

“Bolton can and will clean house,” one former White House official told Foreign Policy.

One other source said “He is going to remove almost all the political [appointees] McMaster brought in.”

Another former official stated that any National Security Council officials appointed under former President Barack Obama “should start packing their s**t.”

Trump announced McMaster's replacement on Thursday, making Bolton his third National Security Adviser since coming to office and continuing a shake-up that creates one of the most hawkish national security teams of any White House in recent history.

A history of bellicosity - Bolton’s views have widely been described as neoconservative and hawkish, and similar Trump.

Bolton, an outspoken advocate of military action who served in the administration of former US President George W. Bush, has called for action against Iran and North Korea.

While serving under former US Secretary of State Colin Powell, Bolton was also both a cheerleader and early architect of the Iraq war.

In a February op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Bolton made the "legal case for striking North Korea first" to stop what he deems an "imminent threat" from the nation's nuclear program.

Bolton is also strongly opposed to the Iran nuclear deal and has been obsessed for many years with going to war against the Islamic Republic.

“He is unabashed about this,” Mark Groombridge, a former top adviser to Bolton at the State Department and United Nations pointing to his views on preemptive warfare, said.

“He has no problems with the doctrine of preemption and feels the greatest threat that the United States faces is the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,” Groombridge added.

The Washington Post reported that at the White House, Bolton is likely to reinforce Trump’s “America First” view of the world.

Both Trump and Bolton share a long-standing animosity toward any treaties, international laws or alliances that limit America’s freedom to act on the world stage.

Defense Secretary James Mattis told colleagues he’s unsure if he can work with John Bolton, US President Donald Trump’s new pick for National Security Adviser, according to a report.

Report: Mattis Isn’t Sure He Can Work with Bolton Mon Mar 26, 2018
http://en.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13970106000670

Mattis reportedly told staffers he would find it difficult to work with Bolton prior to Trump’s announcement last Thursday that Bolton would replace H.R. McMaster, according to The New York Times.

Bolton is said to be an unpopular pick with both Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly.

The President tweeted last Thursday evening that Bolton, the hawkish former George W. Bush administration official, will take over for McMaster on April 9.

McMaster, an Army Lieutenant General, will retire from the military, a White House official stated.

Bolton served as US Ambassador to the United Nations under the Bush administration, and as undersecretary of State in the years leading up to the Iraq War, and had a focus on preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

Democrats have expressed concerns about Bolton and his past pro-war views.

Bolton will be Trump's third National Security Adviser. His first, Michael Flynn, resigned last year and has since pleaded guilty in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

JW: How Can We Trust the Mueller Operation in Light of Andrew Weissmann?

Judicial Watch released two productions (335 pages and 44 pages) of Justice Department documents showing strong support by top DOJ officials for former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates’ refusal to enforce President Trump’s Middle East travel ban executive order. In one email, Andrew Weissmann, one of Robert Mueller’s top prosecutors and formerly the Obama-era Chief of the Justice Department’s Criminal Fraud Section, applauds Yates writing: “I am so proud. And in awe. Thank you so much. All my deepest respects.”

How much more evidence do we need that the Mueller operation has been irredeemably compromised by anti-Trump partisans?

We're coming out of Syria very soon, let others take care of it - Trump (Video)
Published time: 29 Mar, 2018 18:43
https://www.rt.com/usa/422728-trump-syria-leave-troops/
President Donald Trump has made a surprise announcement that US forces will be withdrawing from Syria, citing the defeat of Islamic State and the need to defend US borders and rebuild “crumbling” infrastructure.

“We're coming out of Syria very soon. Let the other people take care of it now,”
Trump said during a speech in Richfield, Ohio on Thursday, dedicated to his infrastructure initiative.

The US spent $7 trillion in the Middle East, Trump said, describing how the US would build schools only for insurgents to destroy them, while there was no funding to build schools in Ohio.

“We build a school, they blow it up. We rebuild the school, they haven’t blown it up yet, but they will,” he said.

The president also pointed out the “wall” and 32,000 US troops guarding the border between North and South Korea, while the US border with Mexico was not likewise protected.

“Is there something a little bit wrong with that?”
he asked the crowd.

Trump’s remarks about Syria are in line with what he said last month, at a press conference in Washington with Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull.

“We're there for one reason: to get ISIS and get rid of ISIS, and to go home,” the US president had said. “We’re not there for any other reason and we’ve largely accomplished our goal.”

However, this goes against the previous pronouncements of his subordinates at the State Department and the military.

In January, then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson outlined a plan that envisioned extended US presence in Syria to ensure a peaceful transfer of power to a “post-Assad leadership.”

In December last year, the Pentagon said US troops would remain in Syria for “as long as we need to, to support our partners and prevent the return of terrorist groups.”

Moscow: US Deploying Hardware to Al-Tanf, Boosting Military Presence in Syria

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has commented on the situation in Eastern Ghouta and the US military presence in Syria.

Moscow is concerned by Washington's plans to fortify its military presence in Syria at the US military base in al-Tanf, as heavy military equipment is arriving, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing.

"We are still concerned about reports that the United States and its allies are consolidating their illegal military presence in the territory of sovereign Syria. In particular, heavy military equipment is arriving to the zone established by the United States around the settlements of al-Tanf in the southeast of the country," Zakharova told a briefing.

The US military base is located in the border town of al-Tanf, where troops of the armed Syrian opposition are trained and equipped. The Al-Rukban refugee camp is located in the "security zone" next to the US military base al-Tanf; it was illegally deployed in April 2017 under the pretext of fighting terrorists.

At the end of November last year, the head of the Russian Center for the reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria, Lieutenant-General Sergei Kuralenko, reported that the US, having closed the 55-kilometer zone around the US base in the Syrian city of al-Tanf, had isolated more than 50,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance. Russia then proposed to the command of a group of US troops in al-Tanf to jointly ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the refugees. The coalition, led by the United States, agreed to help, but said that it had not received confirmation that Syrian authorities were ready to allow convoys to pass.

Operation in East Ghouta

Maria Zakharova said that the counterterrorism operation in the Syrian East Ghouta is coming to an end.

"The counterterrorism operation in East Ghouta is over, only the city of Douma remains under the control of militants," Zakharova said at a briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

A significant part of the civilian population was able to leave the city via humanitarian corridors organized with the assistance of the Russian military, she added.

"Negotiations are underway on the possibility of a peaceful transfer of control over the city to Syrian government forces," Zakharova added.

"Continuing fabricated and groundless accusations against the Syrian government and Russia with regard to the indiscriminate use of force in the alleged killing of civilians, pure fiction and other lies that are allegedly imbued with concern for the fate of the civilian population, in fact create obstacles for reaching negotiated solutions and saving lives," Zakharova said.

The situation in Eastern Ghouta has been tense over the past months, resulting in the ongoing shelling by militants of Damascus and fire from the Syrian government forces. Syrian authorities said they opened fire in response to shelling from Eastern Ghouta, but Western countries are blaming the Syrian government and Russia for being responsible for the intensification of tensions in the area.

On February 24, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2401 that urges all parties to the conflict in Syria to immediately stop fighting and adhere to a humanitarian pause for at least 30 days across Syria.

Trump’s Latest “Deal”: Sell Syria to Saudi Arabia for $4 Billion

It’s no secret that Saudi Arabia has funneled weapons, fighters, and funds into Syria, now Trump is looking to sell off chunks of the embattled nation to the Saudi monarchy, making Saudi Arabia de facto arsonist and firefighter.

WASHINGTON DC – This week, as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) meets with top White House officials, reports have surfaced that Syria will be a key part of foreign policy discussions between the Trump administration and Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler.

According to the Washington Post, President Trump – in a bid to remove the estimated 4,000 U.S. soldiers illegally stationed in Syria – has offered to remove U.S. troops from Syria’s occupied northeast if Saudi Arabia agrees to pay $4 billion to “rebuild” and “stabilize” the areas the U.S. coalition and its proxies took from Daesh (ISIS) last year.

As the Post noted, the plan is meant to allow Trump to minimize an overt U.S. military presence in the region while accomplishing his postwar goal “to prevent Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian partners from claiming the areas, or the Islamic State from regrouping.”

The Trump administration’s stated goals for America’s presence in Syria betrays the fact that the mission originally professed by the U.S. was the defeat of Daesh. As the threat posed by Daesh has all but passed, administration officials “have convinced Trump that the U.S. military cannot remove its troops from northern Syria in part because of Iran,” suggesting that the U.S. presence in Syria is now relegated to containing Iran as well as the long-standing goal of removing Syria’s president from power. The strategy of Iran containment through occupying Syria has been clear for some time and has been stated openly by U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley and the now former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Last September, Haley remarked, “the [U.S.] efforts in Syria have been remarkable. And I can tell you, Iran is not going to be in charge, and Iran is not going to have any sort of leadership in that situation to where they could do more harm.” She also stated that the U.S. is not “going to be satisfied until we see a strong and stable Syria. And that is not with Assad in place.”

Then, in January, Tillerson told an audience at Stanford University that only “the departure of Assad through the UN-led Geneva process will create the conditions for a durable peace within Syria and security along the borders” and that “US disengagement from Syria would provide Iran with the opportunity to further strengthen its own position in Syria.”

Given past statements of top officials in his administration and his often-stated desire to share the burden of nation-building with U.S. allies, Trump is now offering Saudi Arabia control of the Syrian territories the U.S. has illegally occupied, but at a hefty price.

According to U.S. officials cited by the Post, when Trump first floated this deal to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, it was positively received, leading the president to believe that “he had a deal” with the monarch which would keep Syria’s oil-rich northeast in the hands of U.S. allies and out of the hands of the Syrian government his administration seeks to topple.

However, Saudi officials have reportedly sought to lower the price and have questioned the $4 billion price tag, but not the deal itself. MBS’ meetings in Washington this week will likely reveal if Trump’s latest “deal” is a success.

Though the U.S. attempts to involve Saudi Arabia in the “reconstruction” of Northeastern Syria are now getting public attention, they are not new. Last October, MintPress reported that Brett McGurk, special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL – a project launched by the State Department in 2014 to ‘degrade and defeat ISIS’ – was negotiating with controversial Saudi minister Thamer al-Sabhan over Saudi funding for the reconstruction of Raqqa. Now, the plan for the city of Raqqa is now being touted as a solution for “reconstructing” the entire territory that the U.S. is occupying in Syria.

Furthermore, if the Saudis agree to the president’s latest deal, Raqqa, which was all but destroyed by the U.S.-backed effort to “liberate” it from Daesh, and the rest of U.S. occupied Syria will – perhaps ironically – be rebuilt by the very country that has long funded Daesh and is home to the extremist politically funded ideology of Wahhabism it was dedicated to spreading.

Indeed, as leaked emails show, the U.S. government has known for years that the Saudis, along with other Gulf monarchies, have consistently provided “clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL [Daesh] and other radical Sunni groups in the region” as these groups seek to establish an “Islamic state” modeled after Wahhabi ideology, much like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia itself – a theocracy known for its persecution of religious minorities and its penchant for public beheadings.

The Saudi monarchy’s practice of persecuting religious minorities could spell disaster for those groups in Northeastern Syria that have already suffered greatly after Daesh. Though many of these minorities are no longer in the region as most were forced into refugee status or killed, it bodes a particularly unpleasant future for the Kurds, who are religiously diverse and are relatively supportive of gender equality in great contrast to Saudi Arabia. The Kurds’ alliance with the U.S. military is unlikely to aid them if Northeastern Syria comes under Saudi control as this alliance has done little to help the Kurds elsewhere in Syria, particularly in Afrin.

However, the U.S.’ goal in the region is not to ensure stability, democracy or any of the other humanitarian buzzwords frequently used to justify its military adventurism. Instead, passing the baton to the Saudis in Syria would further the goal of partitioning Syria along sectarian lines and would serve as a fountainhead of Wahhabi extremism in the future, key to destabilizing the Assad-led government and allies of the Syrian state, namely Lebanon’s resistance group Hezbollah and Iran.

Wow! I had to do a double-take when I read this headline, c.a.! Didn't see that happening - any time soon? Looks like Trump "pulled a fast one" but what is he really up too? Playing switch-a-roo with the Saudi's? I bet there is also a Saudi (OPEC) deal going on here too - somewhere?

The "Mad Dog" meets ‘The Devil Incarnate’ (Enter ‘The Devil Incarnate’: Mattis Greets Bolton Outside Pentagon) (VIDEO) 29.03.2018
https://sputniknews.com/us/201803291063046659-Devil-Incarnate-Mattis-Greets-Bolton/

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis met with US President Donald Trump’s new national security adviser, former US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton, outside the Pentagon. Mattis introduced himself to Bolton with a joke about the ambassador’s reputation as the “devil incarnate.”

Mattis was nicknamed "Mad Dog" long ago, but he may want to change that to Cerberus — the Greek "hound of Hades" — since he is now keeping company with the so-called "devil incarnate" in Bolton.
When the two met today for the first time since Bolton's appointment to the White House, Mattis' greeting shocked reporters.

"Thank you for coming. It's good to finally meet you. I've heard that you're actually the devil incarnate and I wanted to meet you," the secretary told Bolton on the Pentagon threshold. The exchange was picked up by a CNN reporter's microphone.

Bolton has earned a reputation as a "war hawk" for advocating or supporting armed conflict across the globe, notably with North Korea, Iran and Iraq. Sputnik spoke with filmmaker and journalist Robbie Martin after Mattis' remarks to discuss Bolton's reputation. Martin has directed a three-part documentary on the neoconservative movement.

"He embodies the neocon[servative] spirit from before, when they rebranded and tried to merge with the neoliberal class in DC. I could go down the list," Martin told Sputnik. "He was trying to add Cuba to the ‘Axis of Evil' during the Bush administration. He was trying to get weapons inspectors into Cuba because he claimed they had a bioweapons program and we should consider attacking them or bombing some of their weapons facilities. He was actually caught on a hot microphone suggesting that Israel should preemptively strike Iran — a pre-emptive nuclear strike."

Martin says that the biggest difference between Bolton and other prominent neoconservatives is that Bolton has never swayed from his hawkish rhetoric, whereas others "decided to sort of rebrand and massage their rhetoric for the Obama era. Instead, John Bolton stuck to sort of the old neocon script. There was kind of a split among the neocons where some of the more conservative, more virulently Islamophobic neocons, split off into their own camp from some of the more neoliberal neocons."

"One of the most defining things [about Bolton] is that he was probably one of the main neocons who carried over the idea that we need Iranian regime change, to the point where he actually had a super PAC, called the ‘Bolton PAC,' which put most of its money to [Senator] Tom Cotton (R)," Martin said. "They tried to get elected several senators that were extremely anti-Iran to be able to fold that into their platform."

Bolton was also one of four founders of the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), a highly influential foreign policy think tank during the Bush administration.

Besides fellow PNAC founder Bill Kristol, Bolton "seems to be one of the only neocons that has been able to raise a bunch of money and involve himself in politics to this degree," Martin told Sputnik. Bolton became a frequent contributor to Fox News during the Obama administration and continued to work in DC.

Since his recent appointment in the White House, however, Martin says that he and some of the other neocons who followed a similar path have started to adapt their rhetoric, similar to the other wing of the neoconservative movement.

"They were kind of pooh-poohing the idea of Russiagate, pooh-poohing the idea that Russia was an important focus — until Bolton's appointment. Until they expelled these diplomats. Now it seems like even Frank Gaffney, John Bolton, some of these outlier neocons are now flipping their script on Russia, whereas before they were just sort of not saying much about Russia," Martin said.

I'm not buying it, 'not a sausage'! It's a cryptic message! :)

Trump: US to Leave Syria 'Very Soon' to Let Others Take Care of It

https://sputniknews.com/us/201803291063044198-trump-us-syria-very-soon/

United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the US would be withdrawing forces from Syria "very soon" and "let the other people take care of it" instead.

"We'll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon.

Let the other people take care of it," Trump said during a speech in Ohio. MEANS: Deployment of French Troops to Syria's Manbij Coordinated With US - Reports https://sputniknews.com/middleeast/201803301063055471-france-macron-syria-kurds/

There are around 2,000 US troops in Syria, the Pentagon has said. LIES

"We're knocking the hell out of ISIS (Daesh). We'll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon. Let the other people take care of it now. Very soon, very soon, we're coming out. We're going to have 100 percent of the caliphate, as they call it--sometimes referred to as land. We're taking it all back--quickly, quickly," Trump said to a cheering crowd.

It's not clear what taking the land back means. The Syrian and Russian governments have consistently called the US military presence in Syria "illegal."

When asked whether she is aware of a policy determination to pull the United States out of Syria on Thursday, US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, "I am not."

It's also not clear whether Trump's on-stage policy announcement equates to an actual change in policy. On Thursday afternoon, Defense Department spokeswoman Dana White told reporters that "important work remains to guarantee the lasting defeat of these violent extremists."

"Our commitment to win must outlast the so-called physical caliphate, and the warped ideas that guide the cruelty of ISIS," White noted.

Trump was talking on the topic of infrastructure. "We build a school. They blow it up. We build a school, they blow it up. You know what we have for it? Nothing… I used to say, keep the oil! If we kept the oil, we would have been okay. If we kept the oil, we wouldn't have ISIS! They kept the oil, we didn't keep the oil. Stupid! Stupid!"

The operation was carried out after Syrian intelligence received information on the transfer of a large batch of weapons, ammunition and equipment for armed groups in the region.

And maybe, Trump "is listening now".

BEIJING: China’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday it was coordinating with the United States on a possible visit to China by US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, which would be the first such trip under US President Donald Trump’s administration.

China says it is “coordinating” with US over possible Mattis visit Thursday 29 March 2018
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1276101/world

Since Trump took office, Mattis has made several tours of Asia, including trips to Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia. His trip to South Korea in October included a stop at the heavily fortified border with North Korea amid tension over its nuclear weapon and missile programs.

But Mattis did not accompany Trump on his state visit to Beijing in November. “As for the visit of Defense Secretary Mattis to China, defense departments in both countries are currently coordinating on this,” Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said when asked about the issue during a monthly news briefing.

“At the same time, other exchange programs between the two countries’ militaries are also being pushed forward in a smooth manner in accordance with plans,” Ren said. He did not elaborate.

The US Embassy in Beijing said it did not have any information to release.

Japanese media cited the US Pentagon in January as saying Mattis could visit China in the spring.

Ren’s comments comes after Beijing last week angrily objected to a so-called freedom of navigation patrol by a US warship close to one of its artificial islands in the Spratly archipelago in the South China Sea.
Tensions have simmered between the two countries’ militaries over the disputed waters.

Nonetheless, China has said that it has again been invited to attend a major US-hosted naval drill this year, the Rim of the Pacific exercise.

Ren said China would send a working group to the United States early next month to discuss its participation.

The drills, known as RIMPAC, are billed as the world’s largest international maritime exercise, and are held every two years in Hawaii in June and July. China has attended previously.

Pentagon officials have long complained that China has not been candid enough about its rapid military build-up, whereas Chinese officials have accused Washington of viewing their country in suspicious, “Cold War” terms.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by "Friends of Andrew McCabe" on Thursday has raised nearly $500,000 to cover the former FBI deputy director's impending legal expenses.

GoFundMe Page Collects Nearly $500,000 for Ex-FBI Deputy Director's Legal Fees 31.03.2018
https://sputniknews.com/us/201803311063086847-andrew-mccabe-gofundme-campaign/

With donations from more than 11,000 people, the fund blew past its goal of $250,000 Friday after contributions totaled $475,406. The GoFundMe page previously had a goal of $150,000 before organizers decided to raise the bar. It's unclear if it will be increased once again.

"Andrew McCabe's FBI career was long, distinguished and unblemished. He embraced the most daunting, difficult and important challenges that the FBI and the country could assign to him over the past 21 years," the fund's biography of McCabe reads. "His reward for that has been a termination that was completely unjustified, amidst repeated ad hominem attacks by the President of the United States."

"Unfortunately, the need for a legal defense fund is a growing reality. Media reports indicate that at a minimum, there are a number of congressional inquiries that he will be required to respond to, as well as the broader Office of the Inspector General (OIG) investigation that is ongoing, and any potential lawsuits he might consider," it continued.

"Mr. McCabe and his team are working to gain clarity around the lasting impact his firing — 26 hours before his planned retirement — will have on the pension and healthcare benefits he earned over his two decades of service to the FBI."

Campaign organizers later noted that funds would only be used to cover McCabe's legal costs and that any remaining amount would be donated to a charity of the family's choice.

Speaking to the New York Daily News, a spokesperson for McCabe confirmed to the publication that the page was authentic. The representative, however, refused to offer a comment on whether McCabe would be filing any lawsuit regarding his dismissal, which happened two days before he was set to retire.

McCabe was fired March 16 by US Attorney General Jeff Sessions at the recommendation of the FBI after it was revealed that he'd lied about allowing top officials to share sensitive information with reporters.

"The FBI expects every employee to adhere to the highest standards of honesty, integrity and accountability. As the OPR [Office of Professional Responsibility] proposal stated, ‘all FBI employees know that lacking candor under oath results in dismissal and that our integrity is our brand,'" Sessions said in a statement provided by the US Justice Department. "Pursuant to Department Order 1202, and based on the report of the Inspector General, the findings of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and the recommendation of the Department's senior career official, I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately."

Following his involuntary departure from the department, the 50-year-old wrote in a Washington Post op-ed that he'd only learned about his termination after a friend told him it was all over the news.
