Al Today - so sorry to hear about Chester's condition and the decision ahead for you and your family. Just remember that the love you have for Chester will always be with you and as such the love he has for you.

Ditto that. And lots of strength for you and your family regarding the decision you are going through. Due to the bond to Chester, he will always stay with you in some sense, and be it in memory.

Chester has slowed down with age this is for sure. Looking into his eyes daily, I have only seen the will to live. If a dog can smile, I think I have seen some smiles when he tries to be as a puppy. He has pain, but i dunno if he "cries". I wish I was a tough as him. Although I think his time to go home is close, but not today, not just yet.

Dear Al,
When I start to read your initial post, I had to idea to propose you that my cousin attempt to connect to Chester and "verify" if he really suffers in pain at this moment or not (much) and/or if it's still an acceptable pain. My cousin just came back from a one week training on animal communication and his particular gift was that he's strong at feeling any pain that an animal can experience. Also, the teacher lives in the area, he can almost for sure ask for an help from her ton confirm or not what he felt.

But now that I read the whole post I doubt if it's finally a good idea ... let me know if you think that this could help you in any way.

I agree with all that was said, so, I just can add that you have all my support in these difficults moments. As you already do, spend more time with him and I think he'll tell you when it's the good time to help him to pass away - you have apparently a quite good link with him, and one day you'll wake up and know that it's the day to, but in the meantime, enjoy his presence and enjoy life.

I'm really ... "happy" to see so much love in a simple post, it's heartwarming.

So sad for you and your family. We have only had cats for decades but we come up against a similar situation from time to time and it is truly agonising. I have wanted to cling onto beloved pets after I should really have let them go. Luckily I have very aware family members who see things from a slightly different angle and I have always heeded their advice. Kindest thoughts to you and your family and your beloved pet.

So sorry to hear this very sad news Al, it's such a difficult thing to do when we love our animals so much, Chester's in pain now, and needs your help to set him free, as hard as that is to do.

I wish you strength to assist him into his next journey.

I call Chester "The Dog Who Walks". As The Phantom _https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom " a legacy of the Phantom which would pass from father to son. Nicknames for the Phantom include "The Ghost Who Walks", "Guardian of the Eastern Dark" and "The Man Who Cannot Die"."

Chester still has many good moments. I have learned what to do and what to not do to provide a good environment and enjoy his company. He hasn't given me that "I give up" look, doesn't cry, whimper and not show any new discomfort. I feel connected with him...

Thank you munaychasumaq. I dunno if Chester is ready or not.When he looks into my eyes, he comes to me and we hug. That's the only time I now see him wag his tail. It's tough. Methinks soon... But he is still Chester. Just slower...

I think you'll know when it's time when he starts hiding away and wanting to be by himself, and especially when he stops eating. That's usually how you can tell when an animal is close to death.

Glad to hear he's hanging in there. Appreciate every moment together. :)

yea that was my thoughts, that he will "tell" you when time will come ... it is very sad indeed ... to watch him suffer, but than if he still gives you smile and look and showing need for hug, I think, even if that might look like struggle, he appreciate to endure all the difficulties for a bit more moments with you in this time and space ... I hope you find the best way to say goodbye to each other ... my thoughts and love are with both of you ....

I looked into Chester's eyes and knew it was time. He wanted to stay, fought to stay, I made the decision to end his suffering. When I took him in, the Vet said "that dog is old". We've lived here 15 years and Chester was 4-5 years old we we came here. The first injection was to comfort, relieve pain and sleep. He didn't sleep. But he did relax and seem relieved of pain . The next shot was the heart stopper. Yet he hung on, chest kept moving, albeit slower and slower. The Doc said something about what the heck does this dog have two(2) hearts? That ain't right, and he went to reload the heart stopper syringe. I told Chester to meet me at the rainbow bridge, I need his help to cross. And he passed before the doc came back. The doc talked about Chester's OBE, floating, thinking should I stay or should I go. Pretty profound I thought. I like this guy, he sees stuff.

My condolences to you AL and may you hold on to the fact that you and Chester were true companions in this life and your love was real and strong. Gone from this life but never forgotten may his soul be in peace and no more suffering. Take care and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
