What are you listening to?

I love the beat of this song and Frank Ocean's voice, but shudder at the actual lyrics. The first verse is ironic considering the whole 'Caesar is Chirst' premise- note especially the references to Jesus, Plato, lies on the lips of the priest, blood stain collosium doors. Second verse is glorifying substance abuse and sex 'Love is cursed by monogamy'. Hmmm-who writes this s#~*!!

To be expected, considering its Kanye West and Jay-Z. Its so sad to see hip-hop co-opted by the Military-Prison Complex and selling the 'Thug life/Drug Life' through their music. Not to mention how they reference women. :O

"[Frank Ocean]

Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king?
What's a king to a god?
What's a god to a non-believer?
Who don't believe in anything?

We make it out alive
All right, all right
No church in the wild

[Jay-Z]

Tears on the mauseoleum floor
Blood stains the coliseum doors
Lies on the lips of a priest
Thanksgiving disguised as a feast
Rollin' in the Rolls-Royce Corniche
Only the doctors got this, I'm hidin' from police
Cocaine seats
All white like I got the whole thing bleached
Drug dealer chic
I'm wonderin' if a dove's prayers reach
It's pious Pius, the god loves Pius
Socrates asks, "Whose bias do y'all seek?"
Or for Plato, the screech
I'm out chere ballin', I know you hear my sneaks
Jesus was a carpenter, Yeezy, he lay beats
Hova flow the Holy Ghost, get the hell up out your seats
Preach

Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king?
What's a king to a god?
What's a god to a non-believer?
Who don't believe in anything?

We make it out alive
All right, all right
No church in the wild

Let me buy you
Desire
I stand by you
Walk through the fire
Your life
Is my Scripture
And I need it
Through your encryption
Yeah, yeah

[Kanye West]

Coke on her black skin made a stripe like a zebra
I call that jungle fever
You will not control the threesome
Just roll the weed up until I get me some
We formed a new religion
No sins as long as there's permission'
And deception is the only felony
So never fuck nobody wit'out tellin' me
Sunglasses and Advil
Last night was mad real
Sun comin' up, 5 a.m.
I wonder if they got cabs still
Thinkin' 'bout the girl in all-leopard
Who was rubbin' the wood like Kiki Shepard
Two tattooes, one read "No Apologies"
The other said "Love is cursed by monogamy"
That's somethin' that the pastor don't preach
That's somethin' that a teacher can't teach
When we die, the money we can't keep
But we prolly spend it all 'cause the pain ain't cheap
Preach

Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king?
What's a king to a god?
What's a god to a non-believer?
Who don't believe in anything?

We make it out alive
All right, all right
No church in the wild
No church in the wild
No church in the wild
No church in the wild

Here is one of my favorites: 'I'm Shipping Up To Boston' by Dropkick Murphys

I've got it set as my ringtone as well.

Curently, I am listening to Mamoru Samuragouchi's Symphony No1 "Hiroshima".
He is getting attention in Japan these days, as he is so-called "21st century Japanese Beethoven".
He composed this music in spite of being deaf. Even if it is a classic symphony, it is getting very popular for large audiences in Japan.
The music is powerful and dynamic as well as those composed by my favorite Beethoven imo. :D

The third movement is one of my favorites:

Is lovely that piece, I know about him from an OST from a game called Onimusha, CD's name is the Sounds of Onimusha, I like this particular piece: _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEMklgPPduc (Rising Sun 1st Movement), it was a souvenir?, someone went to United States years ago and brought me that CD and one from Final Fantasy, the funny thing is that, I had not played such games, and I am not interested either, I just like to hear the music.

Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)

Darling, remember when you come to me
I'm the pretender, and I'm not what I'm supposed to be
But who could know if I'm a traitor?
Time's the revelator

They caught the Katy and left me a mule to ride
The fortune lady came along, she walked beside
But every word seemed to date her
Time's the revelator, the revelator

Up in the morning, up and on the line
Drive into Corning and all the spindles whine
And every day is getting straighter
Time's the revelator, the revelator

Leaving the valley fucking out of sight
I'll go back to Cali where I can sleep out every night
And watch the waves and move the faders
Time's the revelator, the revelator

Queen of fakes and imitators
Time's the revelator

A rare instance of contrast comprised of simple words versus how they are delivered with respect to meaning.

Read first, listen second, and then both. Compare feelings and impressions.

"Perfect Strangers"

Can you remember; remember my name
As I flow through your life
A thousand oceans I have flown
And cold spirits of ice
All my life
I am the echo of your past

I am returning the echo of a point in time
Distant faces shine
A thousand warriors I have known
And laughing as the spirits appear
All your life
Shadows of another day

And if you hear me talking on the wind
You've got to understand
We must remain
Perfect Strangers

I know I must remain inside this silent
well of sorrow

A strand of silver hanging through the sky
Touching more than you see
The voice of ages in your mind
Is aching with the dead of the night
Precious life (your tears are lost in falling rain)

And if you hear me talking on the wind
You've got to understand
We must remain
Perfect Strangers

The anomaly of listening to, and enjoying, a christian rock song can be explained by the fact that when I replace the static God concept with what I feel as "Higher-than-me Source", it takes on a whole 'nother level of inspiration!

One Christian rock band I listen to with similar reasoning is Needtobreathe.

Through Smoke
Before the truth will come to fill our eyes
The wool comes down in the form of fire
And when the answers and the truth have cut their ties
Will you still find me
Will you still see me through smoke, through smoke

I was born in a house in a town just like your own
I was raised to believe in the power of the unknown
'Cause when the answers and the truth take different sides
Will you still find me
Will you still see me through smoke
Through smoke (x3)

When their whispers have painted pictures that
Make you doubt what you once believed in
Paper stories that hide the glory
To keep us searching
Through smoke

Who do you believe when you can't get through (through smoke)
When everything you know seems so untrue (through smoke)
When I'm lost in a place that I thought I knew (through smoke)
Give me some way that I might find you (through smoke)

Who do you believe (through smoke)
Everything you know
When I'm lost in a place (through smoke)
Give me some way

Needtobreathe - Slumber

Days they force you
Back under those covers
Lazy mornings they multiply
But glory's waiting
Outside your window
So wake on up from your slumber
Baby, open up your eyes

Tongues are violent
Personal and focused
Tough to beat with
Your steady mind
But hearts are stronger after broken
So, wake on up from your slumber
Baby, open up your eyes

Chorus
All these victims
Stand in line for
The crumbs that fall from the table
Just enough to get by
All the while
Your invitation
Wake on up from your slumber
Baby, open up your eyes
Wake on up from your slumber
Baby, open up your eyes

Take from vandals
All you want now
Please, don't trade it in for life
Replace the feeble
With the fable
Wake on up from your slumber
Baby, open up your eyes
Wake on up from your slumber
Baby, open up your eyes

Chorus

Come on
Sing like we used to
Dance when you want to
Taste of the breakthrough
And open wide

Chorus

A few others I've been listening to recently are from Rodriguez

Jane S. Piddy
Now you sit there thinking feeling insecure
The mocking court gesture (jester) claims there is no proven cure
Go back to your chamber, your eyes upon the wall
'Cos you got no one to listen, you got no one to call

And you think I'm curious

Drifting, drowning in a purple sea of doubt
You wanna hear she loves you,
But the words don't fit the mouth
You're a loser, a rebel, a cause without

But don't think me callous

Dancing Rosemary, disappearing sister Ruth
It's just your yellow appetite
That has you choking on the truth
You gave in, you gave out, outlived your dreams of youth

And I can't get jealous

So go on, you'll continue with your nose so open wide
Knocking on that door that says Hurry come inside
But don't bother to buy insurance 'cos you've already died

And you can't be serious

I saw my reflection in my father's final tears
The wind was slowly melting, San Francisco disappears
Acid heads, unmade beds, and you Woodward world queers

I know you're lonely (x3)

I'll Slip Away
And I'll forget about the girl that said no
Then I'll tell who I want where to go
And I'll forget about your lies and deceit
And your attempts to be so discreet

Maybe today, yeah
I'll slip away

And you can keep your symbols of success
Then I'll pursue my own happiness
And you can keep your clocks and routines
Then I'll go mend all my shattered dreams

Maybe today, yeah
I'll slip away

Cause you've been down on me for too long
And for too long I just put you on
Now I'm tired of lying and I'm sick of trying
Cause I'm losing who I really am
And I'm not choosing to be like them

And if you get bored and you got loneliness
Or it's dislike for me you express
I won't care if you're right or you're wrong
I won't care cause you see I'll be gone

Maybe today, yeah
I'll slip away

Can't Get Away
Born in the troubled city
In Rock and Roll, USA
In the shadow of the tallest building
I vowed I would break away
Listened to the Sunday actors
But all they would ever say

Chorus
That you can't get away from it
No you can't get away
No you can't get away from it
No you can't get away

Schooled on the city sidewalks
Coldness at every turn
Knew I had to find the exits
I never, ever would return
Scoffed at the prophet's omens
That said I would live to learn

Chorus

Going unaided toward the west coast
Stopped in the sleepy town
Left my change and walked out
I didn't even turn around
What they were getting next to
Was that old familiar sound

Chorus

In a hotel room in Amsterdam
On a wild and windy August night
As a cloud passed over a cold moon
My heart was seized with terror and fright
Seeping up through the floorboards
Coming in through the walls
Coming in through the doorway
Ringing up and down the halls

Chorus

No you can't get away...

Have you guys noticed that sometimes, you tend to like a certain song because the resonance with the lyrics? and it happens even unconsciously. For example the other day i was listening to a mainstream group, and their best songs (supposedly others) were boring to me, but i fell in love with some of their songs and found after listening carefully that the lyrics relate to something going on with my life. Or something that has certain relevance in it.

This song gives me goosebumps!

The Kelly Family - David's Song (Who'll come with me)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvfFKOU1WQ0

Lyrics:

David:
Who'll come with me?
Don’t be afraid,
I know the way.
Who'll sing with me?
Don’t be afraid,
I’ll show the way,
Who’ll dance with me,
all through the world.
Don’t be afraid,
I’ll show the way…

All:
We’ll go with you,
We’ll search the way,
To find your star.
Who comes with us,
don’t be afraid,
we found our way.

David:
Who’ll fly with me,
To reach your star,
Don’t be afraid, I know the way…

Man:
Hello to all you young ones,
Our fondest hopes now rest in you,
Remember there’s nothing you can’t do,
So believe and be brave.

David:
Who’ll be my friend,
And walk with me,
And sing this song.
Who’ll laugh with me,
We’ll change the world,
And set it free

All:
We’ll walk with you,
We’ll be your friend,
We’ll sing your song,
We know the way……
