Steve Vai: For the Love of God

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okLDkcexiVg&feature=related

I loved this song when I was younger, and I rediscovered it last summer. My daughter is learning violin, and she was bored with a song that her teacher had had her practicing for two months, so we got the book with the annotated music for this album and I had a good time transcribing it for violin. She wasn't able to do the solo (from about 3:25-4:35) at full speed, so we had her do it at half-speed, and she enjoyed doing something 'alternative'. Her teacher was a good sport and even helped download a basic background track for her to practice with.

I am not a big fan of the show "Fringe" after having caught one episode, nor of most TV in general. But I just happened to come across the theme song done on piano, and it is Beautiful. Haunting; Hard to describe. You can listen to it here:

Tracy Chapman - fast car

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere

Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
But me myself I got nothing to prove

You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
And finally see what it means to be living

You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school and that's what I did

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way

I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
And I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone

You got a fast car
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs

You got a fast car
And I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving

You got a fast car
But is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

Such a beautiful song

My generation was influenced by this, pertinent today imo.

Brilliant musical representation of the insanity of war.

Hard to take, right? Supposed to be.

Every now and then I have to have a 'fix' of my favorite orchestral strings, no matter the song. The last two days, Train's song "Drops of Jupiter" has been on my mind, so I gave it a listen and did a bit of research to find out the story behind it. I discovered it was one of those 'success from adversity' stories.

For anyone interested, the lead singer of Train is Pat Monahan. It seems Pat's mother died of cancer in December of 1998 while Train was on tour. Not really having a lot of time to grieve during the tour and being under intense pressure from Columbia Records President Donnie Lenner to produce a hit song, when the tour was over, Pat headed home to Pennsylvania.

One night, not long after falling asleep, Pat awoke from a bizarre dream with the phrase "back in the atmosphere" on his mind. He wrote the lyrics for the song that night and he and the band made a demo for Lenner to listen to.

Upon hearing the demo, Lenner looked at Pat and gave a whoop! and exclaimed "That's your grammy!" Everyone became excited about getting it produced and 'out there'.

Turns out, the song became a Top 5 and won Train a Grammy for 'Best Rock Song.'

Talking about his inspiration for the title and lyrics, Pat spoke about his thoughts of his mother's passing and said (paraphrasing): "Well, what if no one ever really leaves, y'know?" "What if they're still here, but different? The idea being: she's back...here...in the atmosphere..."

Born out of death, yet an affirmation of life. Beauty/creativity from adversity...and a chance to heal for Pat and the band.

Drops Of Jupiter lyrics
Songwriters: Hotchkiss, Robert S; Monahan, Pat; Stafford, James W; Underwood, Scott Michael; Colin, Charlie;

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's a time to change, hey
Since the return of her stay on the moon
She listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey

But tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way
To see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star?
One without a permanent scar
And then you missed me
While you were looking for yourself out there?

Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing her way through the constellation, hey
She checks out Mozart while she does Tae-Bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as
Plain ol' Jane told a story about a man
Who was too afraid to fly so he never did land

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?
Did you finally get the chance
To dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?

And tell me, did Venus blow your mind?
Was it everything you wanted to find?
And did you miss me
While you were looking for yourself out there

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you
Even when I know you're wrong?

Can you imagine no first dance, freeze-dried romance
Five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had, and me?

But tell me, did the wind sweep you off your feet?
Did you finally get the chance
To dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way?

Tell me, did you sail across the sun?
Did you make it to the Milky Way
To see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated?

And tell me, did you fall for a shooting star?
One without a permanent scar
And then you missed me
While you were looking for yourself?

And did you finally get the chance
To dance along the light of day?

And are you you're lonely looking for yourself out there?

Avenue of Hope by I Am Kloot (from the soundtrack/credits to the film Sunshine)

_http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JZaB92qUnY&feature=related

Along the avenue of hope
The footsteps falter, the fingers grope
and days, stretch out, beneath the sun
No-one's born, and no-one dies, no-one lives, so no-one cries
and we wait to see just what we will become

Don't let me falter, don't let me ride
Don't let the earth in me subside
Let me see just who I will become

You're like the clouds in my home town
You just grow fat and hang around
and you're days stretch out beneath the sun

and you don't live, you don't die, you don't love so you don't cry
and we wait, to see just what we will become

Don't let me borrow, don't let me bring
Don't let me wallow, don't make me sing
Let me see just who I will becomee

Don't let me falter, don't let me hide
Don't let someone else decide
Just who or what I will become

Don't let them borrow, don't let them bring
Don't let them wallow, don't make them sing
Let them stretch out beneath the sun

A remake of "Clocks" (by Coldplay) by the Twelve Girls Band. They are a band of (now) thirteen girls from China who use traditional instruments to play various kinds of both traditional and modern music. I liked the original version of Clocks, but there is something about this version which I find especially touching:

A beautiful Song..

"Time" by Alan Parsons Project

Time, flowing like a river
Time, beckoning me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river
To the sea
Goodbye my love, Maybe for forever
Goodbye my love, The tide waits for me
Who knows when we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea, to the sea
Till it's gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore
Goodbye my friends, Maybe forever
Goodbye my friends, The stars wait for me
Who knows where we shall meet again
If ever
But time
Keeps flowing like a river (on and on)
To the sea, to the sea
Till it's gone forever
Gone forever
Gone forevermore

band - Cog, song name - No other way, an awesome three piece band from Sydney

Bridges are burning but faces are looking away
People are yearning for someone to show them the way
Tables keep turning and time is the price that we'll pay
Fast cars and freedom, as long as you learn to obey
Fear is the virus they use to divide us
Hoping we'll all just pretend that there's no other way

No other way
No other way
No, there's no other way

Ordered by a god above
To murder in the name of love
And they'll always claim that truth is on their side
Holding keys to a paradise
All their noise is a lullaby
For years they have ruled over you and I

All hits and I'm feeling fine
Uncontrolled and undivided
No vendetta
All's clear in a silent mind
Ain't no words that can describe it
So much better

Lay down your guns people, and start again
And stop digging this hole
Into which we're all sliding
Screaming down a dead-end track
We took a wrong turn and we're headed back to love
Once this ship has departed
Everyone can feel at home

All invited
Why not set aside then try to understand your mind(a state of mind)

Throw in your cards people and fold again
And get back on a roll
Once this ship has departed
Everyone can feel at home

And we're all here looking and they move the targets
That same old moon in orbit
And feeling like we're cornered all the time

Cornered
cornered all the time
[ Cog Lyrics are found on www.songlyrics.com ]
Cornered

Standing at the borderline
laughing at the borderline
crying on the border line
staring at the borderline again

All invited
Humans undivided
Why not set aside then try to understand your mind

Take it slowly
While facts are showing
Until we're there
Until we all arrive

All day and
All night
Be love and
Burn bright (the way)

Bridges are burning but faces are looking away
People are yearning for someone to show them the way

Tables keep turning and time is the price that we'll pay
Fast cars and freedom, as long as you learn to obey
Take it slowly
While facts are showing
Until we're there
Until we all arrive

Fear is the virus they use to divide us
Hoping we'll all just pretend that there's no other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way
No other way

i'm listening to Ocean Drive. and its link http://www.imusicz.net/mp3/136405/

say it's true
pink and blue
i can share your situation
keeping hold our
emotions yeah
will only make us cry
and you go
but i know
it ain't so serious anyway
when the clouds arrive
we'll live on ocean drive

chorus

don't know why
so blue
the sun's gonna shine on everything you do
the sky so blue
the sun's gonna shine on everything you do

he left you
black and blue
without a word of explanation
and he took your love for granted and
he left you high and dry
but you know
someday
well you'll wonder what you see in him anyway
when that day arrives
we'll live on ocean drive

say it's true
pink and blue
i can share your situation
keeping hold our
emotions yeah
will only make us cry
and you go
but i know
it ain't so serious anyway
when the clouds arrive
we'll live on ocean drive

chorus

so blue
the sun's gonna shine on everything you do
the sky so blue
the sun's gonna shine on everything you do
