Fionn Regan - Put a Penny in the Slot

_http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM7wyui6mzs

I apologise,
seem to have arrived,
On what items in my bag from your house.
There's cutlery,
a tablecloth, some Hennessy,
And a book on Presidents deceased.
I'll have them fed-exed to you,
It was a strange thing to do,
I hope we can still be friends.
Ah, it was not me,
but someone else, you see,
Twisting the steering reins.

Put a penny in the slot and make an
artificial li-ii-iight shine,
Leave go-ooo. Mark old and line.

I don't give advise,
But be wise and think twice,
Before getting involved in a game.
Where the minority
Face the majority,
Who are faceless and born without names.
Was it knock synch when
we came across three men,
They had church candles wrapped in newspaper.
I bought two from them,
And I'll lit one for you,
I hope the message made it's way down the wire.

Put a penny in the slot and make an
artificial li-ii-iight shine,
Leave go-ooo. Mark old and line.

The soul of a dog,
he's alive and not gone
To the farm like the others said.
A Rhodesian richback,
Off the beaten track,
In a furniture shop down on the quays.
For the lonliness you foster,
I suggest Paul Oster,
A book called Timbuktu.

Put a penny in the slot and watch the
Drunken sailor boy dance.
She will not let you be
Her lov-ver.
She goes out looking for
The taxi.
Her phone is ringing straight to
Message-minder.
Send out a battalion to
Find her.

Put a penny in the slot and count the
Swans through a te-elescope.
I can't help from cryin'
I wish you were mine.

When I was seventeen,
I followed my dream,
Up into a high-rise block.
The adventures of Augie March,
By Saul Bel-low,
Was all I had for company.
At night time I'd lie
In Beckingham pike,
With tears like flashbulbs.
And recall my treasure-
Searching days,
In the rock pools as a kid.

To the remains of
The cherub plains,
Or around the bonfire in Nailors’ cove.
Good company and grief
Sit like a dark leaf,
Sits beside a singing nett-le.

Put a penny in the slot and make an
artificial li-ii-iight shi-iine,
Leave go-ooo. My golden arm

[The lyrics are obviously 'christianity'-inspired. They're included in the interests of translation]

This was, and is, our funeral song. By the end of the Removal, with funerals every day, it was the song that everybody knew by heart. It became our national anthem.

So while most nations have anthems telling you how wonderful they are or how courageous, or how beautiful their land is, our anthem is our funeral song, to remind us of all of those who we lost, and with whom we will be re-united someday.

nvwatohiyada, healing and peace to you all.

Dire Straits: Brothers in Arms

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5JkHBC5lDs

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day youll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And youll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many differents suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But its written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Heard this one again after so many years while listening to Randy Bachman's show on CBC.

I loved it as a kid, and it's hitting me now as such an uplifting, buoyant piece.

Unfettered Joy and Living. (Maybe it's sappy and I'm just getting old. ;) )

They're really good live! Matt Bellamy has such a good voice (his French page on Wikipedia says his voice covers 3 octaves).

yeah, I was lucky enough to be in the audience at this one:
Hoodoo
Starlight
Feeling Good
Knights of Cydonia
Supermassive Black Hole

Thanks, I enjoyed that  (Starlight =>)
I've been listening to the Absolution album. These guys have a sense for melodies, that's for sure!

Starlight is really beautiful, I just love that song. :)

The lyrics of this song are impresive:

Dragonland - Beethoven's Nightmare:

Twilight, Candlelit walls
A Strong Crescendo
Highlight the lonely calls
From my piano

Melody, come to me
Sing your silent voice
Remedy my envy
Bring me one last choice

Why, why can't you bring me to find
To clear your sound
No wayfarer is blind

See my hands
Conducting a Nightmare
The symphony of a tragedy
So great it devours me
These notes are just fantasy
Peretual Dream
Won't let go of me
I struggle to live
Without the notion of a sound
That could open my mind

Moonlight, make me conceive
A slow sonata
Midnight, the dead will grieve
To this dark cantata

The detestable dance to my score
They hear my cries
Your guidance I implore

See my hands
Constructing a nightmare
The symphony of a universe
So vast it devours me
These nights are just fantasy
Celestial Beam,
Help me to see
I struggle to live
Without the notion of a sound
That could open my mind

[Solo: Mörck, Magnusson]

Into a Unending Sorrow
A festival of horror
An orchestra of the undead

So bright my destiny was
Golden future
Inside shadows amass
Nocturnal rapture

Melody, come to me
Sing your silent voice
Remedy my envy
Bring me one last choice

Why can't you bring me to find
To hear your sound
No wayfarer is blind

See my hands
Conducting a nightmare
The beauty of a melody
Is all that inspires me
To write my last symphony
Perpetual Dream
Never lets go of me
I struggle to live
without the notion of a sound
That could have opened my mind.

I really can't bear Mozart. All those notes!

However, I've found I've really been drawn to a piece of his from his Coronation Mass: the Benedictus. It's so beautiful!!

Words and music are here: Mozart - Coronation mass - Benedictus

The words are just the standard ones from the end of the Sanctus in the Latin Mass:

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.
Hosanna in excelsis.
(Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.)

Of course, the words are a bit off, osit. Any reference to Dominus ("the Lord") is pretty suspect, I'd have thought. "Dominus" just equals "Dominator" or "Conqueror" - a point James DeMeo points out in his book on the origins of patriarchy, "Saharasia".

Maybe if you replaced "Domini" with "Veritatis" it would be a whole lot better - then you could read it: "Blessed is that which comes in the name of Truth". But it wouldn't scan right. On the other hand, you could replace "Domini" with "animae", which means "breath" or "life" (or perhaps both at the same time). Now that would scan, and would mean "Blessed is that which comes in the name of breath/life".

Clearly I'm rambling now.

Another lovely thing I often come back to are some words of Joe Strummer, lead singer out of The Clash. This is off the album "The Future Is Unwritten". His words are impassioned and ultra-sincere. You can hear them here:

Without People, You're Nothing - Joe Strummer

Joe Strummer said:
I'd like to say people can change anything they want to; and that means everything in the world. People are running about following their little tracks. I am one of them. But we've all gotta stop... just stop following our own little mouse trail. People can do anything; this is something that I'm beginning to learn. People are out there doing bad things to each other; it's because they've been dehumanized. It's time to take that humanity back into the centre of the ring and follow that for a time. Greed... it ain't going anywhere! They should have that on a big billboard across Times Square. Think on that. Without people you're nothing.

New Smashing Pumpkins song, Song for a Son. (SP was my favorite band in my adolescence, but they still hold a place in my heart) ;)

One of their albums, Machina, was alchemically themed. This next one, which is being released one song at a time for free on the Net, follows the human life-cycle using the imagery of the tarot...

Note: The new drummer is 19!

Brilliantly done, and it brought a big smile to my face! When I realised how well done it was - the energy, the dedication (I mean, they've set words to Mozart's Symphony No. 40!), the nerve of the thing, PLUS also it's perfect horridness - well, my smile just got broader. :D

Fantastic - but I'm not gonna listen to it again. My nerves will only take so much.

Take a rest :)

Pearl Jam has a new song Just Breath - I have to say, it rocks...in a mellow rocking sort of way.

Seeing Eddie Vedder in the video makes me feel that I may be starting to age...
