An old cut from Morrisey, Southpaw. Very gritty British take on the blues for me, it's been good listening to his stuff today. Lyrically he cuts across the music in a novel way, and he lets his words hang a little. Very original.
The Smiths were Britain's equivalent to REM in many ways. A conscious reaction to the phallocentric excesses of the 1970s rock scene and a very literate and arch approach to personal expression. This music still sounds fantastic 40 years on from its creation.
I recently came across this performance of André Rieu together with 15-year-old Emma Kok, performing Barbara Pravi's song Voilà live on Vrijthof square in Maastricht in 2023. It was the song that represented France in Eurovision 2021. This has been posted before, but I cannot help but repost again. She has a truly beautiful voice-many in the audience are moved to tears, as was I when I heard her sing. She comes from a musical family, her younger brother is on stage playing with the violinists; Andre mentions that Emma has suffered from a rare disease with gastroparesis & how she persists despite her health issues. I think I'm turning into a watering pot- I cry every time I hear this.
