What's the weather where you are?

Fruit and grain crops are damaged across the entire NE USA from the two arctic lows that pushed across North America in the first weeks of April. Blueberries were hardest hit along with peaches, corn and winter wheat. Wyoming, Colorado and Kansas doubled their previous snow total records in the same time.

Snow, wintry mix to sweep across midwestern and northeastern US

Snow, Wintry Mix to Sweep Midwest, Northeast… NYC Turned Winter Wonderland in April
http://investmentwatchblog.com/snow-wintry-mix-to-sweep-midwest-northeast-nyc-turned-winter-wonderland-in-april/

Like recent blasts of arctic air, a new cold plunge will bring snow showers and even a swath of accumulating snow in parts of the Midwestern and Northeastern states into this weekend.

In some cases, the cold air will rival that of nights early in the week, including parts of the interior South. The cold will threaten blossoming fruit and ornamental trees.

The air will be cold enough to allow showers to occur as a mix of rain, ice and snow in some areas and mostly snow in others.

Snow Seen Turning New York City Into Winter Wonderland in April

•As much as 3 inches forecast to fall across Manhattan

•Chill descending on eastern U.S., possibly touching Masters

The next blast of cold air from the north could bring “unusual” April snow to Manhattan on Saturday and a chill to the greens in Augusta, Georgia, where the Masters golf tournament is in full swing.

New York could get as much as 3 inches (8 centimeters) of snow starting as mild air in the region is ushered out and replaced by much chillier weather, according to theNational Weather Service.

“Unusual is not an inappropriate word to use; you wouldn’t expect it,” said Tim Morrin, a weather service observational program leader in Upton, New York. “Right now, the first precipitation will be in the form of cold rain, Then as we move into the afternoon hours temperatures will start to drop. We are anticipating wet snow.”

An April snow in New York isn’t “unprecedented,” coming once every 10 to 15 years, Morrin said. However, the average high temperature in Central Park for April 9 is about 59 degrees.

Weekly wrap-up: April snow blankets northeastern US; Satellite capture of blood red Nile River goes viral (Video)

Most of the highest snowfall amounts found in New York and Pennsylvania ranged from 3-6 inches, while some areas in New England received as much as 6-8 inches, Vallee said.

[...] Several fascinating photographs from outer space were made available from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) this week.

Back in February, the ESA launched the new Sentinel-3A satellite and it recently began providing data from its orbit. One of the images beamed back to Earth showed a blood red Nile River slicing through northeastern Africa. The red areas are vegetation as seen in infrared by the satellite's radiometer, the ESA said.

On Monday, NASA released an image of a dust devil spinning in a valley on the surface of Mars. The space agency's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity captured the image from the north-facing slope of a part of the planet named "Knudsen Ridge."

Dust devils are not an uncommon occurrence on Mars. Just like on Earth, they are created by a rising rotating column of hot air, NASA stated. The vortex becomes visible when the column whirls fast enough and picks up tiny grains of dust from the planet's surface.

Pennsylvania was forecasted to have 2-4 inches of snow for my area this morning, yet the ground is only wet with heavy wind. Ohio got hammered with 8 inches of snow in some areas.

Nearly 8 inches of snow covers Toledo
http://www.toledoblade.com/local/2016/04/09/Storm-set-to-blanket-region.html

The 7.8 inches were recorded at Toledo Express Airport, the official weather reporting site, according to the weather service. The April snow accumulation is second only to 12 inches that fell in Toledo in 1957. The most snow in any month previously this winter was 5.9 inches in January.

The snow was blamed on a strengthening low-pressure system out of Canada that moved across the Great Lakes region.

The blanket of heavy, wet snow brought down power lines and made driving hazardous on area roads. Law enforcement agencies throughout the area reported numerous accidents, many involving vehicles sliding off the road or into each other. No serious injuries were reported.

Heavy April Snow Blankets the Great Lakes and Northeast; Over 6 Inches Already For Some in Michigan, Ohio (Video)
https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/april-snow-northeast-great-lakes-april-8-9-2016

Some parts of Ohio have already seen 7 inches of snow from an April storm that caused power outages and accidents.

Already, 6-10 inches of snow, mainly on grass and vehicle tops, has been reported across northern Ohio and northern Pennsylvania, including Cleveland and Toledo. Snowfall rates in Cleveland were briefly up to 2 inches per hour. The combination of wet, heavy snow and some winds have lead to some downed trees and power outages, as well.

Rain changed to wet snow in eastern Pennsylvania, as well, Saturday morning, bringing the first measurable April snow since 2003 to Lancaster. By Saturday afternoon, precipitation had changed to snow as far east as Philadelphia, Georgetown, Delaware and the Atlantic City, New Jersey area.

A wave of low pressure will pinwheel southeast through the cold, southward jet-stream plunge in the Great Lakes into the East as secondary low pressure forms off the East Coast and pushes offshore Saturday evening. This will drop additionanl snow across parts of the Mid-Atlantic region.

Winter weather advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

As of Saturday afternoon, the highest snow totals, locally over one foot, occurred in the snowbelts of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and far northwest Wisconsin.

Here are the latest peak and notable snowfall totals by state:
•Indiana: 3 inches near Byron and in South Bend
•Maryland: 9.5 inches in Oakland
•Michigan: 12 inches near Little Lake; 7.5 inches in Marquette; 5.6 inches at the NWS office near Grand Rapids
•Minnesota: 3.8 inches southwest of Snow Bank Lake (25 mi. east of Ely)
•New Jersey: 3 inches at Swedesboro
•New York: 6 inches near Frewsburg
•Ohio: 10.2 inches near Pierpont; 7.8 inches in Toledo; 6 inches on the west side of Cleveland
•Pennsylvania: 9 inches in N. Warren; 2 inches in State College
•West Virginia: 6 inches near Rupert; 2 inches in Huntington
•Wisconsin: 16 inches near Bayfield; 1.6 inches at Milwaukee's Mitchell Int'l Airport

Heavy rain and high winds in Hong Kong today - and more rain expected for the week.

Reports from South China Morning post :

Flooding expected from heavy rain hitting Hong Kong

Heavy rain and thunder could bring possible floods to low-lying areas of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatoy has warned.
The amber rainstorm signal was raised at 9.30am on Sunday morning. This means swathes of the city could see more than 30mm of rain per hour for the duration of the storm.
A thunderstorm warning came into effect shortly after; the Observatory predicts the storm will continue until noon.
The Observatory warned of possible flooding in some low-lying and poorly drained areas.
“People who are likely to be affected should take necessary precautions to reduce their exposure to risk posed by the heavy rain and flooding,” an Observatory statement said.
“Heavy rain may bring about flash floods. People should stay away from watercourses. People who are likely to be affected by flooding should take necessary precautions to avoid losses.”
A trough of low pressure has brought thundery showers to the coast of Guangdong.

Just to add, the storm this morning in Hong Kong had a lot of lightning, and this caused a very brief voltage dip in the grid - that caused lifts in many buildings to suddenly stop and people were trapped. I guess a point to note in the times ahead when living in densely populated cities, as discharge events start to increase in frequency...

Hiker struck by lightning and more than 150 reports of people trapped in elevators in Hong Kong downpour
http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/1934959/hiker-narrow-escape-lightning-and-least-149

CLP Power is looking into whether a low voltage dip that caused more than a hundred lift stoppages across the city yesterday was caused by storm damage at its Black Point Power Station in Tuen Mun.
Emergency services received at least 149 cases of people being trapped in elevators between 9.30am and 11.30am yesterday, mostly in Kowloon and the New Territories, as heavy thunderstorms dumped more 30mm of rain across parts of the city. At least one passenger had to be hospitalised for injuries.
The Observatory raised the amber rainstorm signal at 9.30am before cancelling it two hours later. A thunderstorm warning was issued at 8.15am and extended to 3.30pm. The city was hit by least 319 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes yesterday.

Uhh 18 degrees! Hoping for some Boorah to cool down sea water... Anyway meteorologists said that April is gonna be hot! So one friend of mine concluded that we haven't been swimming almost 4 months (imagine that) - since November  I was always dreaming of spending August somewhere in mountains - for escape sake... I am fed up with heat, tourists ez al just as soon as middle of June.

NW coast of England: really windy yesterday evening ~ 25mph at least. The morning was totally overcast, cold wind and ~10 max, the sun was warm but didn't have much change to peep through.

Not my neck of the woods, far south, but worth noting all the same - from yesterday, England - there was a tidal bore* which was spotted creeping up the River Ribble though, not totally uncommon once in a while:

Punxsutawney Phil Found Dead
http://patriotrising.com/2016/04/11/punxsutawney-phil-found-dead/

BREAKING NEWS: Punxsutawney PA (AP) – “Punxsutawney Phil” was found dead this morning at his home on Gobblers Knob. A full investigation is currently underway but all early indications point to a single self inflicted gunshot wound to the head, though police officials have not ruled out foul play.

Phil has been under increasing scrutiny ever since his February 2, 2016 prediction of an early spring. The weather has showed no signs of an early spring, in fact most of the northern US is currently in the midst of snow flurries.

“Punxsutawney Phil” is considered by many as the world’s most famous prognosticating rodent. However his much anticipated weather predictions have missed their mark in most recent years, causing Phil to fall into a deep depression.

Phil also stared in a 1993 featured film “Groundhog Day” where he played himself and two years later made a guest appearance on the “Oprah Winfrey Show”.

Phil is survived by his wife Phyllis and 352 children.

CURSE YOU GLOBAL WARMING!

As per yesterday, we're still getting the Arctic winds - people are beginning to comment on social media, at least up north, a: 'Where's Spring?' The northern cold and the southern warm may go to explain the storm clouds down south - thunder and lightning, again.

But the reason for the post: more interesting 'April showers(?)' weather in UK:

The last few days, it's been like one day of clear blues skies and sunshine, followed by a day of set-in rain, and back and forth.

Seasonally speaking, the clock change this year has felt particularly weird - like there was no slow transition between Winter and Spring, just went from one to the other: long dark nights to light mornings and nights.

Back home (nearer to the Pennines) they had a quite a bit of snow last Saturday.

In Montreal this morning, the average is 10 degrees celsius on this day, yet it is minus 2 degrees celsius at 7:37 am, and we are only expected to reach 5 degrees today. As well there is still snow everywhere. The wind has been fierce at times.

Today, Fylde coast, NW England, we had sunshine but the breeze is still chilly and frost is predicted later in the week (!)

It may go some way to explaining why down south the following happened - a cold front (north) hitting a warm front (down south) - may also relate to the Solar wind stuff mentioned here Earthqaukes around the world, as well as the meandering jet stream:

Canterbury Morrisons supermarket evacuated after lightning strikes twice

Morrisons in Canterbury has been evacuated after lightning twice struck the roof.

Emergency services including at least two ambulances and firefighters were called
to the store in Ten Perch Road at 3.45pm after reports the building was struck twice by lightning.

The shop was evacuated amid fears the lightning strikes had started a fire.

Several people have been taken to hospital where they are being treated for shock.

A supermarket worker, who couldn't give his name, said: "We felt what seemed like a big earth tremor and then light fittings came crashing down in certain areas of the store."

Mac Dowler, who had just got off a bus at Park and Ride in Wincheap when the lightning struck, said: "That was the loudest crack I ever heard. Nothing makes me jump, but that did."

The news comes as Canterbury is battered by freak storms, including hail stones.

More as we get it.

And just as interesting,i think:

Sunshine in Maidstone... hail storms in Canterbury - Kent's weird weather
13 April 2016
by KentOnline reporter

Did you enjoy a drink in a pub garden this lunchtime, or where you sheltering in the office hoping the hail didn't dent your car?

Depending on where you are in Kent today, you may be experiencing some very diferent weather conditions.

In Maidstone and Medway, the sun tempted many out to the beer gardens this lunchtime, with the towns experiencing balmy temperatures (for the season at least) of up to 16c.

Canterbury...

But Canterbury was not so lucky.

People took to twitter to comment on the crazy weather, with a hail storm hitting the city at about 3pm.

Short sharp bursts of thunder, lighting and heavy rain have also been clearing the city's streets, temporarily at least, interspersed with brief periods of bright sunshine.

The Met Office forecast confirms a mixed bag for the county today: "Broken cloud with scattered showers, perhaps heavy and thundery during the afternoon.

"Some pleasant sunny spells between showers."

And Maidstone

And it looks like the weird weather may continue for the rest of the week.
The forecast says: "Rain, occasionally heavy on Friday, with variable winds.

"Rain slowly clearing Saturday morning, with some sunny intervals later. Becoming colder. Dry, sunnier on Sunday, but cool with overnight frosts."
