What's the weather where you are?

Mid North Coast NSW Australia

So far, it has been a very hot and humid summer- temps have been sitting on 30 degrees C, with very high humidity. And not much by of rain- it started to drizzle a bit last night and today. Supposed to be Autumn now, but it's still hot for this time of year.

Parts of Northland, Minnesota saw more than a foot of snow from storm
http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/news/3989399-parts-northland-saw-more-foot-snow-storm

The storm that brought the Northland flooding rain and heavy snow on Wednesday exited the region Thursday, but not before snow totals climbed to more than a foot in a few locations.

The greatest snow total reported to the National Weather Service through Thursday evening was 13 inches near Lutsen on the North Shore. A spotter on the Gunflint Trail about 20 miles north of Grand Marais reported 12.3 inches, and there were reports of a foot of snow at Cook, Tofte and Taconite Harbor.

The official snow total at the Duluth airport was 9.2 inches. That brings the season total to 66.6 inches — 7.4 inches below normal for this time of the season, but well ahead of the 44.3 inches that had fallen at this point last winter.

The liquid equivalent of this week's snow — along with the rain that fell before the precipitation changed to snow — added up to more than 2½ inches at the Duluth airport. Since Jan. 1, Duluth has received nearly 5 inches of liquid precipitation (rain and melted snow) — about twice as much as normal.

Local rivers and creeks continued to run high Thursday thanks to this week's rain and snowmelt.

The Weather Service reported Thursday that quiet weather is expected in the Northland this weekend — but a chance for accumulating snow will return to the region next week.

Been raining the whole day non-stop today in Hong Kong and South Eastern China. Literally "sheets of water". Never seen anything like this in March, and its very windy (70-80kph) winds with temperature between 15-17Celsius. This is apparently the first of 3-4 days of heavy rain predicted. This has also caused flight delays and chaos at Shenzen's international airport :

Spring season arrived with a rather cold temperature, Mexico City at 12º C we are going to reach 22º in few hours, but is rather cloudy and the air feels cold, due to another cold front, that is lowing the temperatures to pretty much to the whole country, more at the northen states.

Denver digs out from blizzard; roads ice over, schools closed, widespread power outages
http://kdvr.com/2016/03/24/denver-begins-to-dig-out-from-blizzard-roads-ice-over-schools-closed/

DENVER -- A blizzard that ranked in the top five for March has moved out of the Denver metro area, but it left behind a foot of snow, icy roads and cold temperatures.

Denver received 13.1 inches of snow at the official reporting station at Denver International Airport, making it the fifth-largest snowstorm in March in the city since record keeping began in the late 1800s.

But as temperatures dipped into the teens overnight Thursday, all that slushy snow turned to ice, causing headaches on the roadways in the Denver metro area.

Icy roads forced the closure of eastbound Interstate 70 between Federal Boulevard and Pecos Street because of multiple accidents and icy roads.

Several school districts closed for a second consecutive day, including those in Denver, Aurora, Cherry Creek and Adams County.

Power outages remained a concern throughout the state, with Xcel Energy reporting more than 26,000 customers without power as of 8:30 a.m., including 17,000 in the metro area.

Winter weather advisories are in effect with 7-14 inches of snow expected by noon Friday. More accumulation is expected Friday night through Saturday with the next storm system.

Another round of snow is on the way for the Front Range on Friday night into early Saturday. The storm does not appear to be as potent as the blizzard, but 2-6 inches of snow is expected from Denver to Boulder to Fort Collins. Northern Colorado will be on the low end of the totals.

It will be cold for Easter sunrise services on Sunday. Skies should be mostly clear but temperatures will be in the 20s ahead of sunrise at 6:50 a.m. But sunshine should prevail during the day with a few high clouds and high near 50.

Major winter storm underway from Central Rockies to High Plains, US
http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/2016/03/23/major-winter-storm-underway-from-central-rockies-to-high-plains-us/

A major winter storm is well underway from the Central Rockies to the High Plains on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Blizzard warnings are in effect from across northeastern Colorado to southeastern Wyoming, southwestern Nebraska, and northwestern Kansas. The storm is expected to intensify further as it moves towards the Great Lakes through Thursday, March 24.

Today, a surface low pressure system with the central pressure of 990 hPa was located in southeastern Kansas, with a secondary center over northern Kansas. Cold air from Canada continues to spread southward while an upper-level trough from the Pacific interacts with the leading edge of the cold air mass over the Central Rockies. Doppler radars and surface observations at 14:00 UTC indicated light and moderate to locally heavy snow was rotating southward across the Central Rockies and the Central High Plains with the heaviest snow reported in the front range of Colorado.

According to Weather.com, up to 40.6 cm (16 inches) of snow was recorded in California as the system made its way across the West coast. Winter Storm Selene, as they named it, is dumping large amounts of snowfall at a very rapid rate.

In parts of Colorado, more than 50.8 cm (20 inches) of snow have already fallen, and more is on the way. Schools have been closed, and the heavy, wet snow is leading to widespread power outages. More than 90 000 people were without power. Some 700 flights into and out of Denver were canceled.

For once the weather forecast was accurate - on the NW coast of England, yesterday was a pretty lovely day, clear skies over most of the UK, max 13C and the evening felt relatively warm, maybe 5C; today started completely overcast, rain in the morning and now it is raining hard (just in time to water my newly planted herbs! - i did them about 30 minutes ago).

Winds gusting to 35mph this morning. There will be a particularly windy spell when squally rain moves through mid-afternoon, 45-50mph poss.
Seems that's what's hitting us right now; probably the front of: Storm Katie, to provide us with wind and rain over the next few days - the local town has a farmers market and beer festival going on; i'm glad to be indoors! Battling the wind WITH the rain would be miserable, even drunk.

the weather will serve as an additional hindrance for travelers from Saturday through Monday as a series of depressions brings rounds of rain and occasional strong winds.

"The heaviest rain will fall in southwestern Scotland, North West England and Wales," AccuWeather Meteorologist Tyler Roys said.

"The nature of how slow the rain will move could lead to localized rain amounts in excess of 50 mm (2 inches) and flash flooding."Rainfall totals, otherwise, in the U.K. will be generally be 25 mm (1 inch) or less. While the risk of flash flooding will be lower, any downpours could result in slower travel."

The gusty winds will mainly occur across Wales, England and southern Scotland with peak gusts of 50-60 mph (80-95 km/h)," Roys said.

"The strongest winds will be along the leading edge of the rain."For Easter Sunday, thundery showers will be around to dampen any holiday festivities," Roys said.

As travelers head back to Heathrow and Gatwick airports on Monday morning, elevated wind gusts and wind-whipped rain will cause low visibility, potentially leading to more delays.

"Sporadic power outages and downed trees will also be a concern for those traveling on roadways on Monday," Roys said.

Due to the wind and rain anticipated to cause even more travel disruptions into Monday, the Met Office named Storm Katie early on Friday afternoon. This early warning will hopefully provide travelers with enough time to make other alternative plans and to be prepared for the storm.

Storm Katie whupped the south of England, for once, rather than (much of) the north, surprising many weather enthusiasts. And there was talk that this is due to the meandering jet stream sending the lows further south than usual.

A few days ago, for one day only, it was clear all day and the sun shone brightly and was warm to the skin, the wind was quite fresh, but overall a lovely day ~ 13 - 15C?

Today the north west coast of England, Fylde: intermittent but regular rain, FULL cloud cover - my newly potted herbs don't know it's spring yet; i'm to the left of that red pin.

Latest position of the rain. Still firmly over us and here for a few more hours yet. Nice in the SE as per usual. [it's true, i've seen pictures of friends in London outside having a drink, wouldn't think of doing that here, today.]

Also, just to highlight what seems to be that meandering jet stream, (Piers Corbyn also said so) bringing snow to parts of the US, the UK cloud cover mentioned, and higher temps to parts of Europe, like Italy- 10-15C higher the usual, apparently - from MeteoEurope on FB:

Mid north coast NSW, Australia

Supposed to be autumn, and while it is cooler in the wee hours of the morning and at night, it's still unseasonably ridiculously hot. It was 31 degrees here and very humid.

Sunday day, nw coast of England, beautiful day, i went with a friend to walk her dog on the coast and it was ~13C or slightly higher, lovely sunshine with some intermittend cloud but not much - everybody was out with their dogs! :)

England - yesterday evening and through the night, southern England experienced it's first decent thunderstorm for a long time, maybe 6 months + or more, or at least not for a good while.

Now this is interesting since there was also a geomagnetic storm just before, noted here: Earthquakes around the world

We rarely have lightning that's much to talk about; the day before the more northerly areas, Scotland and so on, could see the northern lights - becoming surprisingly common - and then we have this thunder and lightning which had social media chatting - people were loving it tbh; it's relatively uncommon.

Today, my end has been cloudy but the sun when it's out is hot to the skin. ~12C+

Which again, isn't a common sight.

Anyway, the Met office, formerly the governments official forecaster (recently dropped after like 50 years?), is calling this: April Showers. AS the name suggests, we're used to showers... not thunder storms. At least, i don't think...

#AprilShowers today with thundery downpours Don't get caught out, check our rainfall radar http://bit.ly/RainTodayPage

Up where i am, north-west coast of England, it was mainly just super cloudy and intermittent but quite heavy rain - no flood potential.

There's talk of the system, the same one, brewing for a second round:

Cold wave…Canada experiencing arctic temperatures as the mercury drops to -10C with feel like temp at -17C (1F)
http://investmentwatchblog.com/cold-wave-canada-experiencing-arctic-temperatures-as-the-mercury-drops-to-10c-with-feel-like-temp-at-17c-1f/

The snow has stopped falling, but Toronto still has plenty of winter weather on the way, as icy temperatures and overnight wind chill make things downright arctic.

By 8 p.m., thermometers are expected to sit at -4 C, with wind chill making it feel more like -10 C. The mercury will continue to drop until 4 a.m., when the -10 C temperature feels like -17 C.

By morning rush hour Tuesday, we will have warmed up (relatively) to -8 C which will feel like -11 C.

Average temperatures for the beginning of April usually sit around 9 C, though meteorologists say this type of weather not unheard of in April.

The City of Toronto’s Winter Operations crew salted expressways and arterial and collector roads Sunday night into Monday, but Monday’s morning rush hour was still a rough one. By 7 a.m., the OPP’s highway division had reported over 100 collisions in the GTA.
It will be a much sunnier, more seasonal day on Tuesday, with subzero morning temperatures giving way to a high of 1C around 4 p.m.

Toronto is now under an extreme cold weather alert until further notice.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/winter-spring-storm-toronto-1.3519244

As of 7 a.m. it was –6 C in the city and the snow had mostly tapered off. You might see a few more periods of snow early this morning before the active weather is expected to end and leave Toronto under cloudy skies.

An extreme cold weather alert was issued for Toronto around 7:30 a.m. Monday. The alert comes from the city's Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown and it will stay in effect until further notice.

The Indians and Red Sox are scheduled to open their season at Progressive Field at 4pm ET Monday. The problem? It was snowing in Cleveland Monday morning.

LOOK: It's snowing in Cleveland a few hours before Opening Day (Video)
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25541613/look-its-snowing-in-cleveland-a-few-hours-before-opening-day

At one point the snow was so bad Red Sox players walking to the ballpark had to be picked up ... by a former teammate:

The good news is the weather is expected to clear up in time for first pitch. CBS Cleveland says it will indeed be a cold (temperatures in the 30s) and windy afternoon, but the snow is going to stop if it hasn't already. It looks like there will indeed be baseball, and that's a good thing, because a Corey Kluber vs. David Price pitching matchup is on tap.

The Yankees and Astros are not as fortunate. Their season-opener at Yankee Stadium has already been postponed due to nasty weather in New York.

Snow has intermittently fallen throughout Monday across the state of Massachusetts. School was canceled in numerous communities facing a thick blanket of powder on their roads.

When will it stop snowing in Massachusetts? (Video)
http://www.masslive.com/weather/index.ssf/2016/04/when_will_it_stop_snowing_in_m.html

Boston and Worcester are expected to see fresh flakes until around 8 p.m., followed by a chance of snow showers until 1 a.m.

The National Weather Service estimates most of the state - including Springfield, Worcester and Boston - will have accumulated between four to six inches from 2 a.m. through 10 p.m. on Monday. Communities south of Boston in parts of Norfolk, Plymouth and Bristol counties are expected to see a total of six to eight inches by the end of the day.

The snow has stopped falling, but Toronto still has plenty of winter weather on the way, as icy temperatures and overnight wind chill make things downright arctic.

Today the sun has been shining and could be warm but the wind has been gusting at 15 -20mph - forecast for 35mph this evening - and it's bringing quite the chill, taking temps down to 8C, and ~6C this evening; days ago it was ~13C.

However the strength of the wind wasn't allowing cloud to remain in one place for long, which was a blessing, doesn't appear to be the case now though.

As per the image below, it appears that today Arctic air is dipping quite southerly reaching much of the UK , according to BBC Weather. It strikes me of more meandering jet stream stuff.

So we're in the first week of April and April 'shower's involved: rain; a thunderstorm; now we've Arctic air blowing down on us.

A cousin of mine who lives in Canada, who doesn't follow these things, commented on FB that the weather there is all over the place; mild then freezing. Not sure where she is though..

@bbcweather

The cooler air spreading across the UK today was sat over the Canadian Arctic last weekend! CF

Record cold temperatures for early April have swept into some Northeast and Great Lakes cities to begin this week. Subzero readings were even observed near the Canadian border in northern Michigan, northern New York and northern Maine Tuesday morning.

More record cold is possible on Wednesday morning in the Northeast. Then the cold will become more expansive late this week due to yet another southward dip in the jet stream which will allow more arctic air to push south from Canada.

Record Cold Temps Sweep Northeast; Another Arctic Blast on Way… (Maps)
http://patriotrising.com/2016/04/05/global-warming-record-cold-temps-sweep-northeast-another-arctic-blast-way/

On Tuesday morning a number of locations in the Northeast and Great Lakes set new daily record lows for April 5. This includes Marquette, Michigan (7 degrees below zero), Concord, New Hampshire (4 degrees), Glens Falls, New York (7 degrees), Syracuse, New York (9 degrees), Binghamton, New York (12 degrees) and Watertown, New York (12 degrees – tie), Albany, New York (14 degrees) and Rochester, New York (14 degrees). Syracuse crushed its previous daily record low for April 5 of 15 degrees set in 1982 and also tied its second coldest April day on record. In Concord, the low of 4 degrees is a record low for the entire month of April.

In addition to those record lows, several locations on Monday saw record cold high temperatures. Among those cities are Concord, New Hampshire (26 degrees), Hartford, Connecticut (27 degrees), Portland, Maine (25 degrees), Providence, Rhode Island (31 degrees), and Worcester, Massachusetts (22 degrees).

More record lows are possible Wednesday morning in the Northeast, including (current record is in parenthesis):

•Potential record lows Wednesday: Boston (20 degrees); Concord, New Hampshire (14 degrees); Bangor, Maine (15 degrees); Providence, Rhode Island (20 degrees); Worcester, Massachusetts (15 degrees); Atlantic City, New Jersey (25 degrees).

Much of Northeast will once again see wind chills in the single digits and teens Wednesday morning. In addition, freeze warnings extend from parts of the mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley to North Carolina. Frost advisories have also been issued for parts of South Carolina and far east-central Georgia.

Late Week Arctic Cold - Another significant blast of cold air will impact much of the Midwest and East late this week, as another southward dip in the jet stream is expected sweep across those regions.

Below-average temperatures will return to the Midwest on Thursday, with even colder conditions expected across the Midwest on Friday. The chilly conditions will also expand into much of the Northeast and southward into portions of the South on Friday.

Chilly temperatures will stretch from the Northeast into the Great Lakes and parts of the Southeast on Saturday. The Northeast will only see highs climb into the 30s and 40s, with 50s in the Mid-Atlantic.

Low temperatures will also be colder than average and a few daily record lows cannot be ruled out this weekend in the Midwest and Northeast.

A few cities that could set new record lows include (current record is in parenthesis):

•Potential record lows Sunday: New York (28 degrees); Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (26 degrees); Buffalo, New York (19 degrees); Erie, Pennsylvania (22 degrees); Detroit (20 degrees); Cincinnati (23 degrees); Indianapolis (23 degrees); Traverse City, Michigan (13 degrees).

Temperatures may drop into the 30s in many areas in the Tennessee Valley and Southeast. A frost or a freeze is even possible this weekend in parts of the mid-South.
