Split, Dalmatia

Sunny and warm (if not hot), and will stay that way to the end of week according to weather forecast. So plenty of time to visit Bache Beach :cool2: Only yesterday was overcast with little rain - which i enjoyed very much too...

Severe weather, including tornado activity, pummeled the Great Plains on Thursday. More storms over Memorial Day weekend are expected to exacerbate flooding potential from Texas to Iowa, following rainfall that measured more than a foot in some areas.

Storm activity on Wednesday resulted in 14 tornado sightings in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms stretched across Kansas and Missouri on Thursday, leading to a late afternoon evacuation of the Kansas City International Airport, following a tornado warning. The airport was back in operation later that evening, according to the Associated Press.

Lightning strikes children in Paris and Germany, over 40 injured

Three children and an adult were fighting for their lives on Saturday after they were among 11 people struck by lightning during a birthday party in a Paris park.

Another child and an adult were seriously injured, but their lives were not in danger. Five others — four children and an adult — were slightly injured.

In a second freak incident - occurring at around the same time - 35 people were injured by a lightning bolt during a football match in Germany. The lightning struck at the end of a children's match in the town of Hoppstaedten. [...]

The referee, who was hit directly, was rushed to hospital by helicopter. Two other adults also suffered serious injuries. Thirty children aged between nine and 11 were mildly injured and taken to hospital for tests, along with two more adults.

Emergency services rush to Parc Monceau in Paris after 11 people were struck by a freak bolt of lightning

The children in Paris were hit by lightning after seeking shelter under a tree from a sudden thunderstorm. The victims were rushed to hospital after horrified bystanders called the emergency services. The children, aged between seven and 14, were celebrating a birthday in the Parc Monceau, located in the wealthy 8th arrondissement.

Vincent Baladi, a local official, told iTELE television: "They have burns. The lightning struck suddenly. We hope they will pull through."

The situation could have been even worse had it not been for the presence of an off-duty fireman, who happened to be at the scene and was able to give first aid, including a child whose heart had stopped.

Eric Moulin, a fire brigade spokesman, said the fireman "helped the most seriously injured during the first few minutes, before the emergency services arrived." He added: "Without his actions, it would have been much worse."

The off-duty fireman, Pascal Gremillet, said: "I saw them on the ground beside a tree. There was a child in cardiac arrest so I gave first aid and heart massage." Mr Gremillet, a local resident, directed the emergency services to the exact spot.

Nearly 80 firemen were sent to the park, which is popular with families. Police blocked off a section of a nearby road while the victims were taken to two hospitals. Most are being treated at the Necker children's hospital. Psychologists were counselling parents at the hospital.

Grégoire Gauger, a deputy mayor of the 8th arrondissement, witnessed the tragedy. "It started raining buckets and everyone headed for shelter and then lightning struck. We all jumped. I was only 300 metres away. Unfortunately it was a group of children form the area who were hit during a birthday tea."

TV reporting of the event: the strike at the match in Germany was strange because "it wasn't particularly cloudy at the time", which seems to kinda correlate with the sudden occurrence in Paris.

CHANCE OF MINOR STORMS: NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of minor G1-class geomagnetic storms on May 27th when Earth enters a high-speed stream of solar wind. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras, especially in the southern hemisphere where darkening autumn skies favor visibility of faint lights. Aurora alerts: text, voice.

MEMORIAL DAY STORM? NOAA forecasters estimate a 55% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms on May 30th when Earth enters a stream of high-speed solar wind. Magnetic fields in the stream are thought to have a negative polarity ("negative Bz"). Such fields can open a crack in Earth's magnetosphere, allowing solar wind to pour in and fuel auroras.

While the cause of coronal holes remains a mystery, they “correlate to areas on the sun where magnetic fields soar up and away, without looping back down to the surface, as they do elsewhere.”

Question is: where is that current flow going??? That's a pretty huge coronal hole.

Currently the KP index is quiet enough but looking at the other data for geomagnetic activity, it looks busy. You can see it from it's steady level at the very beginning. :

Same here in the Netherlands, though it didn't get that hot (around 22° C). In province Zuid-Limburg (near Belgium) some basements and streets were flooded due to lots of rain.

Also, lightning hit a park in Paris today and 10 children and one adult were injured. And, in Germany (Hoppstätten), during a children’s football match, at least three people were injured badly after lightning strike. Crazy stormy weather!

Parts of western Germany have seen storms, heavy rain and hail over the past two days.

A substantial coronal hole had rotated so that it temporarily faced right towards Earth (May, 17-19, 2016). This coronal hole area is the dark area at the top center of the image. They usually appear dark when viewed in wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light. Coronal holes are magnetically open areas from which high-speed solar wind streams into space. This solar wind can cause aurora displays when it reaches Earth several days from now. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA.

Sur la Côte d'Azur dans le Sud Est de la France, le temps est bien gris, il pleut fortement, les orages sont là et la lumière du jour est très sombre mais la terre avait besoin d'eau...

On the French Riviera in the South East of France, the weather is gray, raining strongly, the storms are there and daylight is very dark but the land needed water. . .

For an idea of how the skies looked in Paris at the time, RT posted a Twitter video - there are clouds, but nothing that would suggest a lightning strike! The thunder is pretty loud too, considering. - You'll have to follow it to the page or to twitter to watch as it can't be embedded

Yesterday night, we had a thunderstorm RIGHT over our house - the air was electrified, there was a short blackout... I don't think I've ever been so close to a thunderstorm! Sheets of rain...

Apparently, a lot was going on last night and in the morning in Germany:
