What's the weather where you are?

I'm on a family visit in northern Germany - in the southern part, it was really hot, but in the north, we went right into storms, tornados and chaos. Trains don't work - took us 12 hours to here via all kinds of detours.

Good reminder to always be prepared when travelling these days - enough water, food, money etc. You never know when a 5-hour-journey will turn into days...

Last year, there have been tornadoes in Germany, which is extremely rare. This year, the trend continues...

Trains cancelled across north Germany as fierce storms kill one

A tornado twisting through Hamburg on Thursday was just the most dramatic example of the storms that are breaking through the recent heatwave, leading to travel chaos in northern Germany.

Gale-force winds, torrential rains and hail damaged rail tracks and power lines, forcing trains to be halted between Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Kiel and Hanover, the national railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) said.

A 50-year-old man was killed after his parked car was hit by a tree near the city of Uelzen, also injuring his wife. A falling tree also seriously injured a female cyclist nearby.

Regional train provider Metronom also announced that its services in the northwest of the country were facing serious disruptions after storms had blown trees onto the tracks in several places. Affected services are on the lines between Uelzen, Cuxhaven and Bremen.

Meanwhile flights out of Berlin's two airports were restricted on Thursday afternoon, after the capital was hit by the rough weather.

Road traffic has also been hit by the fierce storms. Transport authorities in Lower Saxony warned on Thursday that drivers on the Autobahn between Hamburg and Hanover should drive with care due to trees lying on the asphalt. Delays are to be expected.

At around 11.30am on Thursday, a tornado was spotted around 10 kilometres from Hamburg Airport, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

But DWD tornado specialist Andreas Friedrich said the twister was relatively weak and only lasted for a few minutes. It also only came into contact with the ground for a short period of time.

In the south of the city, storms damaged house roofs and killed sheep that were hit by toppled trees.

Music fans had to seek shelter in their cars at the venue of a weekend musical festival near Bremen that, ironically, is named "Hurricane"

Weather service Kachelmannwetter displayed a map of the storm hitting land on Thursday morning.

The DWD warned that further tornadoes are to be reckoned with across the north and east of the country throughout the day.

“The very explosive ingredients” necessary for twisters to develop - a rarity in Germany - all currently exist, Friedrich warned.

The tornado expert said that people who spot a tornado should not view it from their window.

“The best thing to do is to go into the cellar and not to stand near the door or a window,” he emphasized.

The DWD also warned that hurricane-force winds will blast across the north of the country, accompanied by heavy rain.

Northern Italy, we are still in the grip of a heat wave for the second week in a row with temperature reaching 34-37 C°, it's pretty suffocating outside during the day and even during the night, it seems the heat wave will go away next week

Here we go again... ! ;)

By Janene Pieters on June 22, 2017 - 16:40

At 11:20 a.m. thermometers in Arcen, Limburg read 32.2 degrees Celsius, thereby making today the hottest June 22nd ever measured in the Netherlands. This is the 9th heat record broken in the country so far this year and the third one this month, according to Weeronline.

February 15th, March 30th and 31st, May 27th and 29th, and June 15th and 21st also broke heat records.

Today is exceptionally hot in the Netherlands, especially in the southeast with maximums ranging between 33 and 35 degrees. Some places may even hit 36 degrees Celsius.

You lucky ! Northeast of France, absolutely no rain from tooooo long, the soil is dry, dry and dry. Hopefully the temperature goes a little down, especially in the night. All in it all, it was insupportable but let's stay positive, all this old people dying will relieve the economy :/

Temperatures above 40C in the last few days in Macedonia. According to the forecasts today and tomorrow the temperature will climb up to 42-43C, and then from Sunday, it will drop for a few degrees.
Strong south wind is blowing since yesterday and there was not raining in the last 2 weeks.
It's very hard to sleep at night because it's too hot.

South Central France: been blowing pretty constantly for three days or so no, intermittent rain (not a lot), clouds and very cool. Down to 13/14 C this morning. This is more like Fall weather than summer! And all this after the one week hot spell!!

On the Côte d'Azur in France, cloudy weather with temperatures of 16 ° in the morning, the freshness makes good ...
In the afternoon, 27 °, the air conditioning is no longer necessary but the fan turns slowly ...
No rain for a long time, it would be necessary ... We did not have a storm either ...

Very similar here in the UK the last few days, it felt as if we’d gotten to the longest day of the year and that now fall was going to come in very quickly, that that was it for 'summer'. Slightly sunnier and brighter again today, we’ll see.

Mirrors the same conditions here @ (SSW France), as well. A little more rain, (over the last few weeks). From a light drizzles, to hard downpours.

Winds will picked up with the onset of incoming thunder cell systems, Making for working out doors unperdicpatabel C'est la vie

Where has summer gone? (UK)

I've been informed that I am not really in south central France, but rather south west France. Seems pretty central to me since it is about equidistant to the Med, Atlantic, and Pyrenees. However, not to the Eastern border... oh well.

Anyway, 5/6 days of clouds, wind, intermittant rains, low temps down to 12 C... definitely not summer weather by any stretch of the imagination! More like Fall!
