What's the weather where you are?

This morning in SW North Carolina it's 14 degrees Fahrenheit and snow is on the ground. It's been a much colder than average winter here, as the locals who lived here their whole life have noted. By tomorrow highs will be in the 50s for the next week, so we are getting pretty wild swings in temperature.

7 Deg here this morn in Mid-south Tenn - Brrr ... and 8 Deg yesterday morn. Long range forecast calls for another blast at the end of the month.

In the Netherlands, a severe winter storm with gales up to 140 kph (87 mph) in some places (gale force 11) has claimed three lives today, injured numerous others and caused serious damage (over 10 million euros and counting). Rooftops were blown away, trucks toppled, buses stranded, trees came down. Public transportation (railways, trams, buses) and air traffic came to a halt (Schiphol temporarily closed completely; many flights delayed or cancelled).

The temperature here in south Texas has finally reached the 40’s after two days of below freezing temps with sleet and a vicious wind. Houston has already seen two instances of snow and ice this winter – highly unusual indeed for this part of the country. Fortunately, it’s going to be 70 degrees this Saturday – go figure.

UPDATE on the aftermath of the storm from yesterday in the Netherlands: one more person killed which brings the tally to four casualties; rail network had to deal with 344 separate storm-related incidents on Thursday, including 97 trees on tracks and 20 damaged overhead cables; many commuters were stranded or heavily delayed; the farming sector reported 1200 damage claims worth over 20 million euros, 25% of which came from greenhouses; private homes and cars took damages for up to 90 million euros so far; nationwide, thousands of trees were brought down by the storm and the forestry commission has advised people to be careful while walking in the woods this weekend because of the risk of falling branches. It was the third largest storm this century, only the ones in January 2007 and October 2013 caused more damages.

One week ago we had a severe storm here: people were injured, roofs blown off buildings, bus stop pavilions turned upside down, New Year's trees fallen (in Russia we celebrate the New Year until January 14th, because the night from January 13 to January 14 is celebrated as 'the Old New Year' according to the Julian calendar):

Yesterday Orthodox Christians celebrated the Epiphany, and usually it is accompanied by the so-called Epiphany Frosts. So last night it went from -15C to -30C, which is not particularly anomalous, but still quite cold. According to the local forecasts, we will have temperatures of around -30-35C until next weekend and sometimes up to -43C. Today's photo:

Thanks, Palinurus! Up North it wasn't so bad. I do hope that people pay will pay more attention to these storms. I watched many videos in which people were pretty reckless and it could have ended very badly. Clearly, some people are not paying attention at all.

Sadly, it seems that way to me as well. I think during such times, it's probably best to stay indoors, or at least make sure you're not walking near big trees. When I was outside that day, I saw many trees (big ones) and big branches on the pavement, which could've been deadly if you happened to be underneath one when it breaks! I reckon that such storms will occur more frequently and that they'll be stronger, too. Thanks for the update, Palinurus.

The weather in the south-west of Holland is currently calm now, with a bit of rain and temps around 0-13 degrees Celsius.

Thank you all for your compliments and additions. :cool2:

On a personal note, as fate would have it the only questionable tree in the community garden at the back of my apartment was just felled and cut to pieces on the very day before this storm busted loose....

How's that for a coincidence ?! ;D

Merci à tous de nous tenir au courant des intempéries dans vos région...

Thank you all for keeping us informed about the bad weather in your area...

I saw the video footage of the storm in the Netherlands, that was some pretty fierce wind. Thanks for the updates, I'm glad you guys are all safe.

While there is a cold snap in the northern hemisphere, it's stinking hot in Sydney, Australia. Tomorrow is forecast to be 38 degrees Celsius (it will be more like 40C where I am staying as it's more inland than coastal).

In Montenegro we've been having quite a rain which resulted in floods in some areas. Good news is that tomorrow we expect clear skies.

Finally, we have some snow in Macedonia. It started as a rain but during the last night, it became a frozen rain and snow. In the morning there were just a few centimeters of snow, but everything was frozen from that rain during the night. I have difficulties to unfrozen my car in the morning while going to work. Today and the current week it will be sunny with temperatures above the average. Minimal temperature goes as -3C and max up to 12C

In the Netherlands, today has been the warmest January 24th since record keeping began (1901).

Today is officially the warmest January 24th in the Netherlands since temperature measurements started being recorded in 1901. The record dating from 1960 was broken in De Bilt at 6:50 a.m. with the thermometer reading 12.2 degrees Celsius, Weerplaza reports.

The day record was also broken at four other measuring points in the Netherlands early this morning, including at Schiphol. And temperatures will still climb somewhat during the course of the day, reaching a maximum of between 13 and 14 degrees. The Netherlands usually gets such high temperatures in mid-April.
