Winter Storm Threatens East Coast? Batten Down the Hatches

I live about 10 miles from the coast; it's definitely getting windy here, and it's been pouring since yesterday, but still nothing out of the ordinary. One of the resort towns about 2 hrs away from here is apparently getting some significant damage, though. It's supposed to start getting bad around 4 here, so we'll see.
I was also a bit confused about why they'd think it would turn left, but again.. we'll see.

We were supposed to have high winds (40mph+) as of 8 am this morning until late tomorrow and, thus far, the wind has been intermediate at maybe 15-20mph - but only in very short spurts and not very often. The rain has been on and off and while the wind is a bit more active than it was early this morning, it's still not where they predicted it would be at this time of day (11 am). It's supposed to get significantly worse as the day moves forward, so we'll see what happens. If the wind does pick up, I do expect we'll lose power later today.

My son had to go work, from Brooklyn to Manhattan, even the bridges are closed down and no transportation, subway or buses, we called a cab and his employer pays for it.

:O Hope he stays safe.

Hmmm, he's a smart guy so he should be fine - would have been nice to be able to keep him at home though!

Exactly! we keep in touch via messages and we have friends in Manhattan in case at night the storm getting worse.

Right now in Brooklyn, there's some wind, and a little rain, but nothing much so far. The wind sounds much worse inside than out.

In my opinion, even though I am no fan of the mayor, I think he is are doing the right thing. Katrina must be on every politician's mind at tis time.

Some neighborhoods are more at risk than others. In one neighborhood in Brooklyn, evacuating everyone downhill makes a lot of sense because the hurricane is in the path of a major superfund site as well as other things.

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/10/sandy-could-be-a-toxic-shitstorm-in-gowanus.html

This situation in the canal has lasted forever, and if it does overflow all the overflow will run downhill through several neighborhoods. I cannot even begin to imagine all the problems that an environmental impact assessment would discover if one were to be commissioned, or where all the residents in those neighborhoods would go while, and if, everything were being cleaned up.

Evacuating the Wall Street area of Manhattan is also absolutely necessary if this hurricane is what they say it is: the buildings are very close together, and the winds increase dramatically in that area and become really fierce even during regular windy storms. I can not imagine what damage the hurricane winds they're predicting would cause.

another magyar:

I'm glad to hear that your son has a place to stay in Manhattan, and that you have some peace of mind.

I came across this article why looking for news on the storm. It is 8 different phone apps that track the storm, shelter locations, and other

Here are some photos of the flooding already happening. One pic shows people just standing beside water rising very fast

I think that flooding is going to be the worst thing. If peeps have basements, best move stuff upstairs. Once the storm surge starts, with the rain going on too, it can come in very, very fast. Been there, done that. Came up to the light switches on the walls. Wasn't even a hurricane just a lot of 50 MPH winds over a period of a couple of days blowing up the Gulf waters. Imagine it as a sort of tsunami.

I came home for lunch to look at the satellite and radar. The South Atlantic 8K Infrared clearly shows it turning west rather quickly. My wife has been showing me pictures of the flooding in Atlantic City, NJ. From the image Laura posted, it looks as if the E-W diameter is almost 1000 miles- that is incredible. Hope everyone out there is prepared as well as possible and stays safe. Here is the site I am using now for radar and satellite-

It is a good site with customizable displays and filters for every view.

Just a curiousity...if storms potentially represent battles in higher densities, does this possible "frankenstorm" amount to the civil war of higher D battles? Seems aptly timed. hope such a musing is not "noise". Have battened down the hatches here in upstate NY, we shall see how it unfolds. Now if i could just get ahold of this "soon to arrive" pressure cooker I could just hole up and make batches of bone broth with my newly acquired bounty of bones... of course i'd need power for that, which we may not have. my biggest fear: that the power goes and my bones don't keep! :scared: fingers crossed. good luck everyone. keep your heads up and keep your heads level. cheers.

Thanks for the concern, webglider!

I just got a message from him, the tunnels gonna shut down at 2pm and he is getting home, now! :scared:

Hope he make it home in time!!!

Geez...

The storm is definitely coming ashore somewhere just North of Atlantic City NJ, as it has made it's turn to the Northeast and continues in that direction. Up until a few hours ago the winds were not all that strong but have picked up considerably since then and are now roaring a bit when the gusts come through. So far there is not any major tree damage in my area - only some small branches broken off here and there. As long as I have power I will continue to update what is happening in my location.

This storm is just so huge that so many people will be affected! I hope everyone will be safe and come through this OK.

I think so too, the storm surge is going to be huge. I’ve been following #sandy on twitter on and off this afternoon, a lot of flooding images coming in now, Atlantic City, JFK and LaGuardia airports (both of which are right on the shoreline), and this is several hours before the next high tide or the main part of the storm coming ashore.

Ya'll remember a couple years ago when the entire US was blanketed with two cyclonic blizzard things? Well, take a look at this:

It's too big to put on the forum because it is high rez. But that thing IS a monster. Can't help but think that Mother Nature is making a statement about American politics.

I don’t know if we can even contemplate exactly what it means from our 3d perspective, only that it represents that something else may be happening. Remember from our limited point of view we only catch glimpses of the 'shadows on the wall' the are 'projected’ from 4d.

I sometimes think about it in terms portals or doorways between one density and the next. When a doorway opens it can sometime let in a draft, you can’t see a draft, but still, you understand that it represents something else happening. For a person with no knowledge of the properties of air, air currents and variations in air temperature, a draft might only be felt interpreted as something strange happening within their skin, not as a draft of air moving against it.

So thinking along those lines in answer to your question, I’d say it sure looks like there’s a lot of activity going on – somebody sure left the door to 4D open! :scared: Interesting the general location that the storm is hitting too, being so close to NY and Washington and also the timing being so close to the ‘election’.

Here's a video of Sandy from space:

SO huge.

I think that flooding is going to be the worst thing.
My thought too, but I'm crossing my fingers, because this will be #3 in just over a year for me, as far as water damage goes. I don't think I can handle another!
