Winter Storm Threatens East Coast? Batten Down the Hatches

quote from another magyar:

I just got a message from him, the tunnels gonna shut down at 2pm and he is getting home, now! :scared:

Hope he make it home in time!!!

I guess his boss realized that people weren't going to sit down to a leisurely chat over lunch or dinner tonight. I can imagine how you feel waiting for him to come home. I hope it's soon!

He just got home! After 3 cabs refuse to go on Brooklyn bridge, he finally find one and just through the door!! :D

What a relief! :flowers:

Thank you to worry about us!

Brooklyn: the wind getting stronger and if reaches 60 m/hr, they gonna close the bridges, they already closed the tunnels.

Just took the dog out for her "business" and it's rainy and a little breezy, but that's it, so the high winds that were supposed to hit us this morning have yet to materialize and, so far, the power is still on (about which I'm very happy).

We still have power also and are happy now:)

I haven't heard of any power outages yet in the city. At least not from anyone I know. But they didn't say anything on the news either (NY1 was on at work all morning)

Getting home from the city to Brooklyn was interesting. 2 cabs refused, they told me the Brooklyn bridge is already closed (I saw that it wasn't when we were crossing the Manhattan bridge, besides at work I kept track of what's being shut down, etc and they only said the tunnels are closed but for now the bridges are still accessible) and the wind kept knocking us over. It wasn't even the smallest of cabs, it was an SUV! When that started happening, I got a little jittery but we were fine. And in Brooklyn, tree branches were already lying in the middle of the street and the storm hasn't even really got here yet....but tonight it shall.

Thank you all for the concern, made it this time and I have decided next time if anything like this happens and the subway system will be shut down, I'll just tell them I'm not going in....It was crazy from the company owners to think that it'd be a good idea to open today.

I kept my ears open and was gonna hop into a cab regardless of what the owners said if I got some specific information on when the bridges were going to be closed.

Here in Southern Maryland, it's been raining moderately hard (in waves) for several hours. I've just come in from outside where I have been trenching to divert water from flooding my yard over the drain field and away from the barn. It is miserable out there. I was soaked to the bone and had to strip on the deck and pour the water out of my boots before I could come in. The wind is really picking up and some of the gusts have reached tree-toppling speed. So far the power is still on--which seems rather miraculous--it has clicked off and then come back on several times. So I am enjoying it while it lasts. I am prepped to comfortably last a couple of weeks without power if need be. I was unable to get dry ice for my freezer but I know a place about 40 miles away where they make it and will be first in line if necessary. If not then I will cook up the meat in the freezer when the time comes and share it with the neighbors and dogs. I only have to go out one more time and feed and lock up the horses for the night, then I can stay dry (good lord willin and the crick don't rise) for the rest of the evening--YEAH!

Only 10 days ago we were carving pumpkins in the sun--we must of had way too much fun to bring this monster storm down on our heads ;)

Be safe everyone and take care.

Indeed the timing of this huge storm is very interesting.
first of this hurricane Sandy happens on almost the same time scale and region as the other big hurricane Irene last year. secondly it happens again at Halloween. the "election" of the president is right arround the corner and the full moon is at this time too. and the "heart" of america New York is again the "target" or so it seems.
and on top of that there is this outrageous media hype of the "end of the world storm" thing and mass evacuations.

I wondering if the universe is telling us something?

We know it is, but our "leaders" are too full of hubris to acknowledge that fact much less take the hint.

Well it's hitting the 'Empire State' (New York) and today, the only report of a ship sunk by Sandy was a replica of the Bounty. Two crew members are missing. The original and famous Bounty was an armed merchant vessel of the British Empire that was on a mission to try and transplant breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies as a cheap source of food for slaves. Interestingly, the surname of one of the missing crew members is 'Christian'.

Adding to that it is also the movie ship from the film Mutiny on the Bounty.

Wow, sounds pretty bad. It'd have probably been like that for me also if I couldn't get a cab on the upper west..

I was thinking the same thing!
Good times...Good company, good food, good conversation. Than being transported back to gray reality, gray and superficial conversation, etc. for the most part at least.

Be safe and hopefully see you soon! :)

Nuke, did anybody actually come into the restaurant???

Well, actually, yes!
Me and the waiter were a little surprised but the rain wasn't that bad in the morning and people - mostly tourists - were still walking around and when the weather kept getting worse, I guess they were getting hungry and needed shelter, and since we were like the only place still open, they strolled in. And we were actually busy for a while. :)

Storm is expected to land near south jersey in another hour. From central jersey, I hear this continuous hauling wind sound for last 3 hours and some intermittent rain . It is moving faster than expected ( 30 mph), so damage is expected to less. It looks, 4 - 6 hrs after land fall, decides the conditions.
As of now, biggest hit is for NJ casino city- atlantic city, pretty much flooded. Despite Governor's request to evacuate( ( specifically asking 'Not to be STUPID' by staying) local leaders asked atlantic city residents to stay there. so No body knows how many stranded in atlantic city. Rescue teams found the conditions to be risky to attempt rescue in night. so tomorrow morning we will know the situation. As of now, people say it is very bad there.

The damage is expected to be soaked down land and tree falling from that and electricity outage. As of now, this is very bad in south jersey, entire coast and it looks fine in central and north jersey.

I get bulk of my food via mail which came last thursday , this prospect of power outage forced me to CAN the entire supply during this weekend. found it be grueling.

Here in Aberdeen, MD, the power is still on, the rain & wind has subsided but the wind is still wailing in waves. They said that we are in the red until Tuesday so we'll see what comes of this. The wind is definitely powerful, I live close to the woods and the trees right outside the house are close to breaking, there is adequate distance between the house and the tree line so direct damage is not likely, but....eyes open.

The value of a good supply of books should not be underestimated. ;)

Just checking in with a verizon card. We've been out of power for about 4 hours now. Crews are not expected to start repairs until safe conditions. I'm a higher elevation in CT, so it was pretty windy all afternoon. 40% of my town is without power so far. Still have to get through the night. Hope you are all staying safe!

Just saw this:

BREAKING: 4-story apartment building collapse at 8th Ave and 14th St.

''A building has collapsed at 8th Ave and 14th Street in Manhattan, according to FDNY and other sources.

It is a multiple-dwelling building and people may be trapped inside.

The front of the building has fallen off, according to this picture from Meg Robertson on twitter:

How old must these buildings be? Also it doesn't really seem collapsed more like the entire front of the building just fell off.

That seems kind of strange to me, though I guess the wind and rain could be enough to do it, especially if the building wasn't very well maintained. And the headline is ridiculous--the front came off, it didn't collapse.

Here in north central Massachusetts, the winds are 19 mph with a lot of gusting at 45 mph. This is according to the Weatherbug on my computer.

Every once in a while the lights are flickering. It's not hurricane force by any means, but it is quite windy. I went out to check something on my truck and the gusts were fairly strong to walk in. Nothing like 60 or 80 mph winds though.

It's also been raining quite a bit here. No drenching downpours, just some heavy rain mixed with regular rain. I'll be glad when it's over.

Not too terrible so far in the northernmost borough of NYC. Sporadic heavy rain, and pretty regular heavy wind gusts keep setting car alarms off. Some shingles blew off a nearby house. Lights have flickered a few times but power has stayed on. Counting my blessings.
