I am sorry for your losses IrJo, Jaminum, and Bluestar.
My grandmother has alcohol induced dementia, and has reverted back into childhood (she believes she is around 8 or so). She does not recognize anyone who may come to visit her anymore, and often confuses people around her for members of her family that passed on previously. She also 'acts out' in the nursing home, and has tried to harm nurses, staff and roomates there, and has escaped several times from the home and boarded buses. She refuses to eat (she was anorexic much of her life in addition to drinking 2 to 3 bottles of wine each day, which I can now see contributed to her deteoriating mental health. I try to remember how she was before the dementia, as does my sister, and keep those memories close to heart. It seems to help the processing of grief OSIT.
One of my close friends' grandmothers has Alzheimer's, and I lived with her grandmother for a few months. She had also reverted back into childhood, but did seem happy most days. She can still recognize people around her from time to time, and would recognize who I was off and on.
I agree with Celtic that it may be the soul that affects the Alzheimer's, not that Alzheimer's affects the soul.
